Die karnavaleske as sosiale kommentaar : 'n ondersoek na geselekteerde werke van Steven Cohen / A. Snyman.Snyman, Amé January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents an investigation into two so-called live art works – Ugly girl at the rugby (1998) and Chandelier (2001-2002) – by the contemporary South African artist Steven Cohen (1962-). These works are explored with reference to the manner in which Cohen (as self-declared queer Jewish freak) uses performance art as a form of activism in order to expose practices of marginalisation and suppression (oppression) of non-normative or so-called deviant subject positions in terms of gender, race and ethnicity. The analysis of artworks is guided by the discourse of the carnavalesque and performative conceptualisations of gender with particular emphasis on Cohen’s use of drag as contemporary form of masquerade in order to propose an alternative subject position. The argument is as follows: that Cohen, by setting up an extreme alternative to normative identity constructs, manages to destabilise existing hierarchies that are structured according to binaries as these exist in spaces (such as a rugby stadium and a squatter camp) in the South African context. This destabilising of binary hierarchies gives rise to the argument that the symbolically encoded nature of spaces known for associations of suppression, exclusion and marginalisation are wrought open so that alternative meanings can come into being by activating these spaces as multifaceted and chronotopic constructs. The conclusion is that Cohen contributes profoundly towards the destabilisation of identities and in this way also helps to propose invigorating and fresh views of gender, race and ethnicity in a contemporary South African situation. / Thesis (MA (History of Art))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Becoming Leaders : An Investigation Into Women's Leadership In Male-Defined And Male-Dominated ProfessionsClare, Jillian January 2004 (has links)
This thesis examines how women perform as leaders within male-dominated professions, including law, business, politics, the military, and the academy. In studying women's performances in terms of the corporeal and spectacular, the investigation seeks to understand how particular women enact leadership through their materiality within specific times and places. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's (1988) theorising of the processes of 'becoming', woman-as-leader is studied as an entity that passes from one incomplete and multiple assemblage to another, rather than as a singular 'developing' identity. The research is located within and between the paradoxes that complicate the performances of leadership for women. One key paradox serving as a rationale for this investigation is that, while 'equity' has become a truism of contemporary leadership, it is clear from formal reports (for example, the 2002 Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) report), that many women continue to be marginalised and under-represented as leaders and senior managers. Moreover, those few women who have achieved success often acknowledge themselves as both legitimately and differently - and sometimes awkwardly, located as leaders in the everyday enactments of their work. The investigation of leadership within and between such paradoxes is problematic for a neo-liberal order of thinking, and even for socially critical theory, because of the assumptions that modernist literature makes about women's struggle for political legitimacy (ie, a narrative of progress, emancipation, and/or linear cumulative historical development). It is for this reason that the conceptual tools used in this study are drawn from post-feminist and post-structuralist theory. Such theorising refuses literal categories in favour of 'ironic categories' (Rorty, 1989) where two apparently oppositional ideas are understood to be both necessary and true. To explore women 'becoming' leaders (Deleuze & Guattari, 1988), 'woman-as-leader' is interrogated using Jean François Lyotard's (1984) notion of 'performativity,' Mary Russo's (1994) theorising of the embodied spectacle of 'the female grotesque', and Richard Rorty (1989) and Donna Haraway's (1991) insistence on partiality, doubt, and the importance of 'undoing' the fixity of modernist categories - in this instance, for women. One ironic category of importance to the study is Haraway's theorising of a 'cyborgian identity', a technological assemblage that is part-human/part-machine. This allows acknowledgement that women leaders inhabit realms beyond the boundaries imposed by the same/difference, human/machine, present/past, and real/virtue binaries. Using these tools, the performances of a number of women leaders is examined in an empirical study that focuses on a few individual women located in male-defined and male dominated settings. The empirical work has two key components. First, it provides a reading of three moments in time where a female individual dys-appears (Leder, 1990) in the public gaze, erupting as a unique spectacle in spaces that are both enabling and constraining. It foregrounds the unique complexities of three public performances in which women made a spectacle of themselves, while the analysis refuses to either celebrate the individuals involved, or to bemoan the conditions under which they did so. The analysis demonstrates the value of re-thinking leadership in terms of its complexity for the female as embodied public 'performer'. It then moves on to focus specifically on the (embodied, spectacular) tactics being deployed by women leaders in contemporary professional work. This analysis is located in the professions of law, business, politics, the military, and the academy. The data-as-evidence emerging from the analysis show women leaders to be both and neither enacting and troubling 'proper' (ie, traditional and/or known) leadership conventions. The analysis provides a reading of how, through certain tactical shifts, women work to 'de-territorialise' both the 'forms of content' and 'forms of expression' (Deleuze & Guattari, 1988) constituting leadership performances. It makes visible the tactical assemblages these women deploy, and the ways in which such tactics separate, combine, and compound the same/difference, equality/inequality, either/or binaries. The specific tactical manoeuvres for achieving legitimacy in the public gaze cluster around four identifiable ironic categories: (i) legitimate cross-dressing (ii) assertive defence (iii) proper blasphemy, and (iv) humanly-machinic. When taken together, the two components of the empirical study compel a re-theorising of 'woman-as-leader' as both insider and outsider, an entity engaging in the on-going work of diss-assembling and re-assembling a leaderly self. Woman is shown 'to be not one, not multiple, but multiplicities', simultaneously (Deleuze & Guattari, 1988). This re-theorising provides a more nuanced account of women leaders working to maintain legitimacy, credibility, and propriety as leaders than mainstream theorising of leadership and management currently allows.

January 2009 (has links)
Abstract: Structural elements of the Portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes' narratives are pieces of a puzzle manipulated by an author who tends to turn relative the ruins of historical context and reassert the wrecks of the narrative form. In this process, historical, political and religious speeches mix to the voices of narrators and characters, raising an enticing polyphonic game in which we intend to interact. With the South of Nowhere (1979), Fado Alexandrino (1983) and Exhortation to the Crocodiles (1999), we will go through meanders of irony, parody and grotesque to expose fragments of signed spaces through past events, throughout and after the Carnation Revolution and the wars engaged, also within characters - a space of writing that fools the authoritarianism speech, discrediting it and ending the automatic speech. / Orientador: Sônia Helena de Oliveira Raymundo Piteri / Coorientador: Ana Paula dos Duarte Arnaut / Banca: Lilian Jacoto / Banca: Márcia Valéria Zamboni Gobbi / Banca: Maria Heloísa Martins Dias / Doutor

O grotesco na cena da dança contemporânea: corpo e comunicação / The grotesque in contemporary dance scene: body and communicationMarcelus Gonçalves Ferreira 18 June 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is dedicated to reflecting on the body and the grotesque in the contemporary art and communication. The aim of this study was to investigate the grotesque in contemporary dance scene in order to understand the relationship between the way of apprehension of the grotesque nowadays and how it is presented scenically. This way, we sought to investigate representations of contemporary culture that may be associated with manifestations of the grotesque phenomenon; how the media and mass consumption take part in the dissemination of this aesthetic; and how, in the dance, the scenic body approaches/reflects these representations present in everyday life. The grotesque phenomenon, object of this research, was investigated in two dance companies: Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças (RJ) and Grupo Cena11 de Dança (SC), where we observed the artistic treatment and equipment used for the construction effect on body-grotesque during the performances and the point of view of the artists using the grotesque aesthetic in their works. The theoretical grounds of this study invested in understanding the grotesque phenomenon in historical fields, aesthetic/artistic and social and its contextualization in contemporaneity. This started from the understanding that the body is primary media, "space" of communication and language, and the scenic dance is an urban phenomenon that mirrors the representational transformations from the beginning of the 21st century. The theoretical approaches of Mikhail Bakhtin on the grotesque realism; Wolfgang Kayser, on the romantic grotesque and the studies of Muniz Sodré and Raquel Paiva, on the grotesque in contemporary communication grounded the discussions. It was important to reflect on the changing of social paradigms that have been molding themselves nowadays, especially with the influence of technological development and media on corporeality and subjectivity processes. The fluid and polyphonic qualities associated with contemporaneity, guided the understanding of these new aesthetic paradigms of the body - assigned as contemporary mobile corporealities - and served to denominate/understand as "liquid grotesque" the multiple and volatile presence of the grotesque phenomena today.

Previous issue date: 2009-08-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The dissertation outlines poetic research developed from a proposition for the representation of the grotesque body, in forms of mutilation, deformation, exaggeration and death, developing relationships between these corporal images, theories of the grotesque and the work of contemporary visual artists, specifically Jenny Saville, Andres Serrano and Lucian Freud. Through an intense process of refinement in technique and in the way of looking, through the production of images with repugnant themes, the research sought to stimulate sensations associated with the life experience of the observer, without negating the collective potential of the image. The theoretical foundation of the grotesque body was elaborated from the work of two of the principal thinkers in this area, Mijail Bajtin and Wolfgang Kayser. According to Bajtin, this was considered part of a carnivalesque cosmovision, in which the body is symbolically considered collective. According to Kayser, this can be understood as an exacerbation of the form and as the strangeness of something familiar. Reflections on the physical body and on the values of our society also formed part of the theoretical basis for this thesis, by way of articles on contemporary art / A dissertação apresentada trata da pesquisa poética desenvolvida a partir de uma proposição de representação do corpo grotesco, nas formas de mutilação, deformação, exagero e morte, buscando relações destas imagens corporais com as teorias do grotesco e com trabalhos de artistas plásticos contemporâneos, mais especificamente Jenny Saville, Andrés Serrano e Lucian Freud.

This thesis aims to point out the social and psychological constructions of Antonio Carlos Viana‘s characters in Cine Privê collection of short stories (2009), based on the madness and eroticism. Connected to this issue, we are concerned to investigate how the grotesque body is described by the narrator‘s ironic memory, which builds silent characters set in situations of social exclusion, contextualized in decaying spaces. As theoretical and methodological elements, we start from reflections that endorse the relations of power, madness, the grotesque, eroticism and sexuality according to the perspective of Michel Foucault, Gaston Bachelard, Wolfgang Kayser and George Bataille. This research is divided in three chapters: the first one is about the theoretical part which addresses the issues of authorship, discourse and power; the second chapter, talks about the perspective from a narrator-child, presents the analysis of selected short stories through the view of madness and of the grotesque such as: "Santana Quemo-Quemo", "Quando meu pai voltou", "Minha avó Inocência" and "Nós, a maré e o morto ". Finally, the third one discusses in detail the issue of grotesque, sexuality and eroticism in the following short stories: "Cine Privê, "Angeline", "Esperanza", "Dia de parir cabrito", "Eliazar Eliazar" and "Moonlight Serenade". Thus, we intend to discuss in what ways the sexual saturation of Antonio Carlos Viana‘s characters occurs facing a disciplinative and excluding social context, as discourse is via of exclusion, as body and space are taken by repulsive aspects.

As canções da Ópera do malandro a partir dos estudos da paródia, do grotesco e da alegoria / The Ópera do malandro songs from the study of parody, grotesque and allegoryPaulo Cesar Torres da Silva 07 October 2016 (has links)
This study aims to analyze ten songs from the musical spectacle Ópera do malandro, Chico Buarque, from the investigation of the parody, the grotesque and allegorical forms. The analysis will be done through the study of the homonym double album phonograms, launched in 1979, with the songs from Rio (1978) and São Paulo (1979) stagings of the play; and from the book, released in September 1978, with the dramaturgy and music from the Rio performance. From parody forms, the first chapter analyzes the songs Tango do covil, O casamento dos pequenos burgueses, Teresinha and Ai, se eles me pegam agora, studing the vast intertextuality network of the play. The second chapter, from a research of the form grotesque, analyzes the songs Geni e o Zepelim and Se eu fosse o teu patrão, supported by passages of dramaturgy and excerpts of other songs. Finally, the third chapter analyzes the passage of grotesque caricature to the allegorical form, through the study of the songs O malandro, O malandro n. 2, Homenagem ao malandro and Ópera do epílogo ditoso. The study of the forms of the ten selected songsin this work, added to the study of the dramaturgy, aims to draw the lines of force of the Ópera do malandro, his critical potential and possibles fragilities. From a farce gran finale, the opera narrative shows allegorically the brazilian political and economic history in the twentieth century.

L'ironie dans l'oeuvre de Jean Giono d'après-guerre / Irony in Jean Giono’s Post-war WorksKahia, Béchir 08 January 2015 (has links)
The irony achieves to the most complex by the simplest, to the reason by the irrational, to the power by the sweetness, to the seriously by the mockery. It is the hatching of the art of the ironic subversion. In the Rhetoric tradition, no mention was made of a shape of a literary use of irony which would allow within a novelistic, dramatic or poetic work, the intrusion of the figure of the author. In the post-war period, we see a new Giono who renews the building of his work on a kind of dizziness: the irony, the allusions, the implicit and the narrative emptiness, in the style and in the conception of the world as well. The works which appeared as is born this era of suspicions which divided the work and changed the esthetics of the writer, are the most marked by the irony. Giono assigns the irony to a home of fictional production which could not benefit philosophical, esthetical, and technical immunity. Irony is also the effect of the typographic processes. In this universe, any authenticity risks to be perverted in a novel. But the irony of Giono is primarily a tragic vision of the world, a form of belonging to this world and a way of participation in its mockeries and its delights. It is also an interpretation of the human condition. The novelist is thus the one who swims in shady waters of the contradiction. He examines the world by revealing the ambiguities.
