Affective everyday in narratives of Muslim women migrating to the UK, 1906-2012

Adam, Sibyl Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
This thesis uses affect theory and studies of emotion to analyse literary representations of the everyday in fictional and non-fictional writing about Muslim migrant women in the UK from 1906 to 2012. Postcolonial literary studies tend to value exceptional events over mundane life, which causes possible issues of exoticism and a danger of homogenising distinct experiences. This thesis offers a theorisation of migration that foregrounds everyday experience through an engagement with theories of objects, bodies and space, as well as emotional experiences that are specific to migrant subjectivity. It analyses two groups of texts: early twentieth century travel writing by Atiya Fyzee, Shahbano Begum Maimoona Sultan and Zeyneb Hanoum, and contemporary literary texts by Yeshim Ternar, Farhana Sheikh, Monica Ali, Leila Aboulela, Elif Shafak and Fadia Faqir. The thesis is structured thematically into three sections, each section containing two chapters, one about travel writing and another about contemporary texts. In the first section, in order to examine how the texts negotiate foreignness in daily life, I consider hospitality theory, which describes how social power relations are based on roles of host and guest. In the second section, I argue that melancholia is an emotional experience endemic to migrancy. The texts demonstrate how this emotion is manifest communally as well as individually, which also shows the political potential of emotion. In the third section, I investigate how emotional processes of migration are described spatially in the texts. The findings of this research show that emotional knowledge is a major concern for migrant writers as a way of engaging with and critiquing the social and political climates of each text. This is produced through narrations about feeling in general and specific emotions, such as irritation or anxiety. Emotional experience is illustrated in conjunction with identities that are both fluid and intersectional, where gender and class converge with ethnicity and religion. The texts also show specifically affective styles of writing that concentrate on focalising women's intimate experiences through, for example, diary entries, bildungsroman or psychological realism. While the differing contexts reflect the particularities of each experience, there are sufficient similarities of narrative content and style to suggest that affective experience is a major concern for this body of literature. Overall, this thesis demonstrates the productive uses of affect theory as a critical stance for analysing postcolonial literature.

Online marketing communication tools used by guest houses in the Pretoria East Region

Marx, Nadia 03 April 2014 (has links)
Online marketing communication provides some of the cutting edge tools that can be used by guest houses to communicate their product and service offerings. The purpose of this study was to determine which online marketing communication tools can be used, and are in fact currently used by guest houses in Pretoria East. The results obtained from this study can assist guest house owner/managers in Pretoria East with decision-making on the communication of off-line and online marketing communication tools to be included in their marketing strategy. Primary data was collected by means of a survey with guest house owners/managers in Pretoria East. Specific corpographic details of guest houses in Pretoria East were identified. Furthermore, the most frequently used off-line and online marketing communication tools were identified, as well as the number of guest houses that have websites and the content of these websites. The findings suggest that guest houses in Pretoria East have to invest more time and money in implementing certain online marketing communication tools, such as social networking and use of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). By implementing online marketing communication tools like these, guest houses in Pretoria East could enhance customers‟ awareness of a guest house. This study verified the importance of electronic tools such as the Internet and Web as an integral part of an organisation‟s marketing strategy, specifically for small businesses in the service sector, such as guest houses. / Business Management / M. Porphyrin-based [3]- and [4]rotaxanes : towards an adaptable molecular receptor / [3]- et [4]rotaxanes à base de porphyrines : vers un récepteur moléculaire adaptable

Roche, Cécile 20 April 2012 (has links)
Rotaxanes and porphyrins are two particularly active fields of research in chemistry. However, molecules that combine the interesting properties of these types of structures are not so common. In this thesis we describe new porphyrin-based multi-rotaxanes, whose syntheses constitute interesting challenges.Porphyrins linked to two or four coordinating macrocycles were synthesised. The "gathering-andthreading" effect of copper(I) was used to thread molecular rods through the rings; the subsequent introduction of stoppers led to the formation of rotaxanes. In the case of the porphyrinic bis-macrocycle a [4]rotaxane was obtained. Host/guest complexation studies with rigid nitrogen ligands showed that the rotaxane behaves as a distensible molecular receptor that can adopt an "inflated" or "deflated" conformation and adjust its shape to the size of the guest. In the case of the porphyrinic tetra-macrocycle the formation of a [3]rotaxane of novel architecture was observed. The synthesis of a new, more rigid bis-macrocycle is in progress. This compound will be used for the construction of a [4]rotaxane that could act as a molecular press able to change the conformation of a guest substrate by compression.

Orchestration de l'auto-assemblage et des mouvements moléculaires de pseudo-rotaxanes helicoïdaux / Orchestration of the self-assembly and molecular motion of helical pseudorotaxanes

Wang, Xiang 28 June 2016 (has links)
The directional motion orchestration of supramolecular architectures is crucial for the construction of artificial molecular machines. Aromatic amide oligomers (i.e. foldamers) can adopt stable helical conformations able to wind around dumbbell-like guests to form (pseudo)-rotaxanes. A fine control of the association-dissociation kinetics allows the oligomers to slide along the rods without dissociation. In this thesis, based on the segregation of the kinetics of association-dissociation and sliding, helical oligomer motions were orchestrated to form complex self-assemblies and to perform directional motion. NMR and crystallographic studies showed that multistation rod guests can template the formation of well-defined multi-helical supramolecular polymers with high fidelity. Each station possessing a defined length and chirality can induce the complexation of oligomers presenting matching length and chirality. Directional sliding of a double helical oligomer along linear multistation rod guests was investigated. Placing a bulky spacer on the rod prohibits the sliding process, forcing the oligomer to dissociate and reassociate onto the thermodynamically favored station. An asymmetrical oligomer was prepared showing highly selective binding toward asymmetrical rod guests. The threading of this oligomer onto linear asymmetrical guests was investigated. Kinetic data indicated that the threading orientation of this asymmetrical oligomer was polarized by its passage along guest molecules.

Étude multi-échelle des changements structuraux et leur influence sur les propriétés optiques de complexes photoactifs encapsulés dans des matrices méesoporeuses / Multiscale study of the influence of the structural changes on the optical properties of photoactive complexes confined in mesoporous matrices

Hsieh, Kuan-Ying 28 October 2013 (has links)
The knowledge of the structural organization of the guest within the host is crucial for the understanding of its properties. Total scattering methods, based on Debye function analysis (DFA) and Pair Distribution Function (PDF), have become powerful tools for structural characterization of nanostructured hybrid materials. The aim of this work is to use the X-ray total scattering method to obtain structural information on photoactive molecules embedded into amorphous silica hosts with different pore sizes, to correlate their structure with the optical properties, and to explore the limitations of the chosen method. Two different photoactive complexes have been investigated. In the first example, the combined PDF and NMR study on Na2[Fe(CN)5NO].2H2O (SNP) embedded into silica matrices allows to extract the nature of the inserted species: quasi-free isolated molecules can be distinguished from nanoparticles and in the former case a model for the arrangement of cation-anion can be proposed from the PDF analysis. In the second example, a luminescent Nd3+ complex, the PDF and DFA analysis reveal that the structural organization of the embedded Nd3+ complexes is different from that of the crystalline material. Furthermore, the Nd3+ cations change the coordination from 8 to 9 during the wet-impregnation doping and adopt very similar structural arrangement as in aqueous solution, which is in agreement with the observed change in the luminescence properties

Multifunctional and Stimuli-Responsive Polymersomes for Biomedical Applications

Iyisan, Banu 16 January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The demand for multifunctional nanocontainers possessing both recognition ability and responsive nature is increasing greatly because of their high potential in various biomedical applications. The engineering of such smart nanovesicles is useful to enhance the efficiency of many therapeutic and diagnostic tools that have the applicability in targeted drug delivery systems as well as designing sensing devices or conducting selective reactions as nanoreactors in the scope of nanobiotechnology. For this purpose, this study demonstrates the formation of multifunctional and stimuli-responsive polymersomes comprising various abilities including pH and light sensitivity as well as many reactive groups with sufficient accessibility to be used as smart and recognitive nanocontainers. The fabrication included several steps starting from the synthesis of azide and adamantane terminated block copolymers, which were then self-assembled to prepare the polymersomes with the corresponding functional groups for the subsequent post-conjugations at the vesicle periphery. The accessible and sufficiently reactive groups were quantitatively proven when UV and IR cleavable NVOC protected amino groups as well as β-cyclodextrin molecules were conjugated to the pre-formed polymersomes through click chemistry and strong host-guest complexations. The gained light responsivity with the aid of successful NVOC attachment enabled further selective photochemical reactions triggered either by UV or NIR light leading to liberated amine groups on the polymersome surface. Therein, these released amino groups were further conjugated with a model fluorescent compound as mimicking the attachment of biorecognition elements to see the direct picture of the applicability. To realize this concept in a more localized and selective way as well as to avoid the possible side effects of UV light, the NIR-light induced photochemical reactions and further dye coupling were performed when polymersomes were immobilized onto solid substrates. This fixation was achieved by adapting the host-guest chemistry into this part and conjugating the adamantane decorated polymersomes onto β-cyclodextrin coated substrates. Several investigations including adhesion behavior, pH sensitivity and mechanical properties of the established multifunctional polymersomes under liquid phase have been performed. It has been found that the polymersome shape is highly dependent on the attractive forces of the substrate and needs to be optimized to avoid the flattening of the vesicles. For these optimization steps, different conditions were investigated including the decrease of cyclodextrin amount and additional surface passivation with PEG molecules on the solid substrates. Besides, the calculated Young’s and bending modulus of the polymersome membrane from AFM measurements showed a robust but still flexible “breathable” membrane which is an important criterion for the applicability of these smart and stable vesicles. In addition, the hosting ability as well as diffusion limits and sufficient membrane permeability of the polymersomes were observed by encapsulating gold nanoparticles as a smart cargo and doxorubicin molecules as an anticancer drug. In conclusion, the established multifunctional polymersomes are highly versatile and thus present new opportunities in the design of targeted and selective recognition systems which is highly interesting for various applications including development of microsystem devices, design of chemo/biosensors, and also for conducting enhanced, combined therapy in the field of drug delivery.

Assemblage de films polymères par réaction click électrocontrôlée / Polymer film construction by electrochemically triggered click chemistry

Rydzek, Gaulthier 19 September 2012 (has links)
Polyelectrolyte multilayer films, built by alternated adsorption of polycations and polyanions, face two main challenges: their construction process is tedious and their mechanical stability is poor. We developped a layer-by-layer strategy to improve the film stability by covalent reticulation of the polymers chains by click chemistry. Polymers bearing alkyne and azide functions were reticulated by triggering electrochemically the production of Cu+ catalyst ions. A one pot morphogen driven self-construction strategy was also developped to improve the buildup process of the films. In this case, all the constituants are simultaneously present in solution while the film grows up only at the electrode. Films based on covalent, host-guest and supramolecular interactions were obtained and the possibility of combining different interactions was also demonstrated. Nanoparticles were also included in layer-by-layer and self-constructed films in order to improve the electrode specific area.

Pospíšilová, Iveta January 2018 (has links)
The topic of this master´s thesis is a new building design of recreation centre in Lavičky and processing of project documentation for this building realization. This thesis is furthermore completed with two specializations. It deals specifically with a specialisation in the field of technical facilities of buildings – heating and air conditioning. The recreation centre is a complex of two units that will provide restaurant and accommodation services with leisure activities facilities. In one of the units there is designed an accommodation facility with smaller wellness area, in the other unit there is designed a restaurant. The estate where the units are located occurs in the north part of the village Lavičky. This locality is built up by family houses and apartment blocks. The architectural solution of the designed units follows on from the concept of simple country object where the object has the shape of rectangle ground plan and is roofed by typical saddle roof. The building of the restaurant and also the guest house is in the shape of rectangle and is roofed by double sheathed saddle roof with metal folded roofing in dark grey colour. As well it utilises modern elements of architecture as big window openings or dormers. The filling of the openings will be accomplished by wooden windows in natural shade. The façade of the units is designed in that way to match both unis together. It is solved by white façade paint in combination with cement splinter panels imitating wood or cement splinter panels in grey colour and is completed by outdoor wooden pergola or wooden storm porch. The wall base part is formed by mosaic façade in grey colour. The layout solution of the units follows on from operation requirements of the particular services and they are separated in space for customers and for operation space. In the unit of the guest house there are designed 9 suites with 22 beds. In the ground floor there is designed one suite for persons with reduced mobility and o
