MAC-E-Filter characterization for PTOLEMY : a relic neutrino direct detection experiment

Strid, Carl-Fabian January 2019 (has links)
The cosmic neutrino background (CNB) can be composed of both active and hypothetical sterileneutrinos. At approximately one second after big bang, neutrinos decoupled from radiationand matter at a temperature of approximately one MeV. Neutrinos played an important role inthe origin and evolution of our universe and have been indirectly verified by cosmological dataon the BBN (Big Bang nucleosynthesis) of the Big Bang.It was Steven Weinberg in 1962 that first theorized on the direct detection of relic neutrinos. The signal of the relic neutrino capture on a tritium target can be observed by studying theendpoint of the electrons kinetic energy that are above the endpoint energy of the beta decayspectrum. The PTOLEMY project aims to archive direct detection of the relic neutrinobackground with a large tritium target of 100 gram, MAC-E-Filter, RF-tracking, Time of flighttracking and a cryogenic calorimetry. In this thesis the MAC-E-Filter have been simulated in two filter configurations. In the firstconfiguration, the electron were simulated five times in the filter. Two in the opposite sideof the detector, one in the middle, and two at the detector. In the second configuration theelectrons was simulated in the entrance solenoid at a fixed position of y = -0.19634954 m fromthe center of the filter and in random positions. Both multiple electrons and single electronswere simulated in the second configuration. In the single electron configuration the electron had a starting position of y = -0.19634954 mfrom the center of the filter, and an initial kinetic energy of 18.6 KeV. The first filter configurationsuccessfully accomplished to simulate the electron track, as the electron was reflectedback and forth between the entry and detector solenoid. The electric and magnetic field profilediered at the entry and detector solenoid. The second filter configuration successfully showedthat the electron will reach the end solenoid, when the filter length was 0.5 m. When the filterlength was increased to 0.7 m, then the electron was reflected in the middle of the filter. Thesimulation showed that the electron energy dropped below 1 eV from 18.6 KeV as the electronpropagated through the filter. The magnetic and electric fields decreased exponentially in thedirection of the detector solenoid. The Simulation of multiple electrons showed mixed resultsand would need more modifications in order to come to a final conclusion.

VHE and multi-wavelength data analysis of HESS J1741−302

Angüner, Ekrem Oǧuzhan 17 May 2016 (has links)
HESS J1741−302 is an unidentified very-high-energy (VHE) γ-ray source located in the Galactic Plane at about 1.7° away from the Galactic Center. It is one of the faintest TeV objects detected so far, with a flux Φ(>1 TeV) = (1.65 ± 0.28stat ± 0.33sys) × 10^−13 cm^−2 s^−1 corresponding to ~ 1% of the Crab Nebula flux at the same energies. The data analysis of an updated high-quality dataset of ~145 hours of VHE H.E.S.S. data taken between 2004 and 2013 has revealed the morphology of HESS J1741−302. The γ-ray spectrum of HESS J1741−302 extends beyond 10 TeV without showing any clear evidence of a cut-off. The source spectrum is well described by a power-law model with a spectral index of Γ = 2.28 ± 0.16stat ± 0.20sys and a normalization at 1 TeV of Φ0 = (2.12 ± 0.42stat ± 0.42sys) × 10^−13 cm^−2 s^−1 TeV^−1. Different scenarios will be considered in this thesis, including the interaction of cosmic-ray protons with molecular clouds found along the line of sight, inverse Compton scattering of infra-red photons provided by a nearby OH/IR star and the presence of a nearby pulsar wind nebula possibly related to PSR B1737−30, in order to explain the observed VHE gamma-ray emission.

It fits to illuminate that the Portuguese novelist undertook a trip to the East, specifically to Egypt and Palestine, in the middle of 1869, motivated by the inauguration of the Channel of Suez. The annotations done by E?a concerning the places that he knew, in odds papers, they were published firstly by its son Jos? Maria d? E?a de Queiroz, fifty seven years then, entitling them as Egypto. Trip notes (1926). In 1966, the novelist's daughter, Maria E?a de Queiroz de Castro, picked up more notes of this material, composing the book Free Leaves, of which they make part the reports on Palestine and on Syria. In these works they are the author's personal impressions in relation to the that he saw in those distant places paragens. The Relic is already work ficcional published in 1887. In this novel, the narrator-character's trip, Teodorico Raposo, is shown by the Medium East. When doing an comparative analysis among these written, it is noticed that the novelist took advantage of its oriental course to redraft fiction, journalistic and epistle texts. Starting from the reading of the " Reports of Trip " and d?A relic, this dissertation seeks to investigate mapear the eatern imaginary in the works queirosianas, aiming the novelist's insert in the context of the easstern European century XVIII, as well as the influences that the writer received from the main works of French artists that also traveled to the East, to example of Flaubert, Renan and Gautier. He makes himself a literary analysis still comparing the texts of the "Reports of trip" writings for E?a young with the novel The relic, written in the writer's full maturity. They guide this study the theories of the parody, of the intratextualidade and of the irony as structures of the satirical and revision speech, that, it is believed, according to this novel of E?a de Queir?s.

Coannihilation neutralino-stop dans le MSSM : violation de saveur, corrections radiatives et leur impact sur la densité relique de matière noire / Neutralino-stop coannihilation in the MSSM : flavor violation, radiative corrections and their impact on the dark matter relic density

Le Boulc'h, Quentin 23 September 2013 (has links)
The Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the most famous model of Physics beyond the Standard Model, provides a good dark matter candidate: the neutralino. One of the mechanisms which can reduce the predicted relic density of neutralino to the experimental range of WMAP and Planck is the coannihilation between the neutralino and the stop. In this thesis, we study two different aspects related to the prediction of the relic density in the neutralino-stop coannihilation region and the calculation of the corresponding annihilation and coannihilation cross sections. We first make short reviews of WIMP dark matter and the Standard Model of particle Physics, introduce the MSSM and discuss the phenomenology of neutralino relic density. We then study the phenomenology of Non Minimal Flavor Violation in the squark sector in the context of neutralino relic density. We consider flavor violating terms in the sectors of right handed third generation up and down squarks and show that they can have an important impact on the thermally averaged (co)annihilation cross section of the neutralino, and therefore on its relic density. Finally, we focus on the issue of improving the precision with which the relic density is calculated, by computing (co)annihilation cross sections at Next-to-Leading Order. Following earlier work in the calculation of one-loop SUSY-QCD corrections to the annihilation of neutralinos, which have shown that the impact of such corrections was larger than the experimental uncertainty, we have calculated similar corrections for the neutralino-stop coannihilation into electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons.

The main evidence pointing to its existence provides us with important features, such as being neutral, stable (with lifetime over the age of the Universe), cold or warm, weakly interacting with Particle Physics Standard Model (SM) particles and sufficiently abundant. The SM does not provide a candidate who meets these characteristics and hence it is necessary to extend it. One of the most sophisticated extensions of the SM is the Supersymmetry, that in addition to solving the problem of DM, explains other unsolved puzzles that are present in SM, among them, the hierarchy and the unification of the gauge couplings. This model implies the inclusion of a new symmetry that puts bosons and fermions in equal footing. The minimal supersymmetric version of the SM is the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), whose viable candidate is the neutralino, which is a fermion composed of superpartners of neutral Higgs and gauge bosons. In this work, we performed the neutralino analysis as DM candidate in CMSSM or mSUGRA scenario, which contains 5 free parameters, M0, M1/2, tan , sign(μ) and A0, for two different analyzes. In the first one we varied the M0 and M1/2 parameters for three different values of tan while in the second and third one we varied all parameters except the sign(μ). In this study, we use some computational tools, including, SARAH, SPheno, SSP and Micromegas, in order to obtain DM Relic Abundance and DM scattering cross section in this scenario. We compared our results with the most recent experimental data, namely, we have used Planck satellite data for the relic abundance, LUX and XENON1T (prospect) for the spin-independent scattering cross section and XENON100 for the spin dependent one. We finally analyzed the implications concerning the viability of the MSSM under the light of the DM problem.

Women Mourners, Mourning "NoBody"

Pecora, Jennifer 05 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Historian David Bell recently suggested that scholars reconsider the impact of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) upon modern culture, naming them the first "total war" in modern history. My thesis explores the significance of the wars specifically in the British mourning culture of the period by studying the war literature of four women writers: Anna Letitia Barbauld, Amelia Opie, Jane Austen, and Felicia Hemans. This paper further asks how these authors contributed to the development of a national consciousness studied by Georg Lukács, Benedict Anderson, and others. I argue that women had a representative experience of non-combatants' struggle to mourn war deaths occurring in relatively foreign lands and circumstances. Women writers recorded and contributed to this representative experience that aided the development of a national consciousness in its strong sense of shared anxieties and grief for soldiers. Excluded physically and experientially, women would have had an especially difficult time attempting to mourn combatant deaths while struggling to imagine the places and manners in which those deaths occurred, especially when no physical bodies came home to "testify" of their loved ones' experiences. Women writers' literary portraits of imagined women mourning those whose bodies never came home provide interesting insights into the strategies employed during the grieving process and ultimately demonstrate their contribution to a collective British consciousness based on mourning. The questions I explore in the first section of this thesis circle around the idea of women as writers and mourners: What were writers saying about war, death, and mourning? What common themes begin to appear in the women's Romantic war literature? And, perhaps most importantly, how did such mourning literature affect the growing sense of nationality coming out of this period? In the second section, I consider more precisely how these literary contributions affected mourning culture when no bodies were present for burial and advanced the development of a national consciousness that recognized the wars' "nobodies." How did women's experiences of being left behind and marginalized in the war efforts prepare them to conceptualize destructive mass deaths abroad, and, conceptualizing them, to mourn them?

Still Life Happens

Crabtree, Mary Ann 12 April 2024 (has links) (PDF)
After dedicating over two years to pursuing an MFA degree focused on ceramics and sculpture, I find myself transported back to a familiar setting from my past: a tableau reminiscent of what remained in the dining space after four young children finished a meal and exited the room. Revisiting the scene recalls happy times despite the disorder. What helped maintain my sanity during the relentless repetition of the every-day-long task was the realization that every day, innocents are learning to become aware of the world around them. For my thesis exhibition, I created a tableau as a loud reminder of those messier times in my home. My exhibition features an oversized wooden toddler's chair and table, surrounded by scattered meal-time remnants exaggerated in scale predominantly crafted from ceramic. The food items are strewn about in seemingly random arrangements, creating a chaotic still life. Perhaps the disproportionate size of the furniture and the disorderliness subconsciously acknowledge the monumental challenge of caring for children, a task that once felt never-ending but has since become a distant memory. Viewers may find solace in the mundane subject matter and in the ease of recognizing the familiar elements on display.
