This master’s thesis revolves around the means of participation established around the newly formed Social Democratic Party in Sweden at the end of the 19th century. In 1889 the party was organized in close proximity to the editorial office of the party newspaper, Social-demokraten, and dependent on the support of its subscribers to uphold and increase circulation. Simultaneously, the consolidation of the Second socialist international provided a new framework for the national organisations as it was decided that May 1 of 1890 would be the date of synchronized mass- demonstrations for the legislation of the 8-hour working day. The thesis examines the means of participation and the associated construction of participatory political subjects in relation to the newspaper, the demonstration and the question of work time regulation. The analysis shows that the Swedish campaigns promoted an increased sense of self-awareness and obligation towards the larger organizational structures as well as society as a whole. Participation was put forth as a means of confessing to a genuine and unadulterated identity. This identity and its assigned biological features, as they were portrayed in relation to the question of work time regulation, created the physical characteristics of the participant as a focal point of the political project. The question was used to create knowledge about the participant as an objective outset in the quest for legitimacy. This process can also be seen as the creation of a situated public as an origin of power.

Previous issue date: 2017-06-30 / Não recebi financiamento / This study discusses the trajectories of young students who seek higher education, particularly degrees in Education, obtained from two different institutions in Rio Claro-SP, Brazil: a public, state-funded university (São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” - UNESP) and a private institution (Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Educação de Rio Claro - ASSER). The aim of this study relies on investigating which are the reasons that take students to aim at higher education degrees, on knowing their education trajectories, and the aspects involving their choice for the Education field and for the possibility of becoming schoolteachers. From the empirical point-of-view, the study methodology involved an assessment tool with closed-ended questions – a survey – which aimed to deal with a large sampling of subjects. These questions were analyzed in order to provide basis for a qualitative look into the theme and the subjects. Such analysis enabled obtaining data from another assessment tool, with open-ended questions – now applied as interviews – which helped to comprehend the uniquenesses of these people’s universe. One hundred and two (102) students took the closed- and open-ended surveys, including both the university and the college students. Among them, 15 were selected for and accepted to be interviewed. The surveyed students comprised freshmen and senior undergraduate Education students from both the aforementioned institutions, selected in order to provide insight on how the seek for an Education degree starts and evolves, thus contextualizing this notion concerning the education scope. From data, the investigated students were recognized as belonging to what can be identified as urban working class groups. These students usually did not pick Education as their first choices, but have found themselves touched by its social appeal during the course. Further, in spite of not perceiving the teaching carrier as properly valued by society, they ethically committed themselves to become real agents of social (and their own personal) change as schoolteachers in Brazil. This study revealed that, for these young people, achieving a graduate degree means significant social mobility within the limited range of possibilities which are made available for them, as a consequence of the social inequality reality established in Brazil. Such working class groups’ students seek in their choices a better future, and see the teaching carrier as a chance to make a difference in other people’s lives, and as a way to find both personal and professional fulfillment.

Tradições e rupturas no cinema político de Michael Moore / Traditions and ruptures in Michael Moore\'s political cinemaCristiane Toledo Maria 02 October 2015 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the film production of the American filmmaker Michael Moore, proposing as a central question the relationship established between art and politics in a historical moment which, on one side, points to the crisis of capitalism and, on the other side, to the political fragmentation of the working class. Starting from the formal analysis of two of his films, we have established a relationship with the historical moments which gave conditions of production to them, in order to understand the method developed by the filmmaker to deal with the crisis of representation and communication experienced by political art in the last decades. The two films chosen for this analysis are Roger & Me (1989) and Capitalism: a love story (2009). Both films have different diagnoses of the distinct moments of the capitalist crisis, along with the realization of the fact there is a dismantling of the working class, result of a series of economic, political and cultural chances, especially during the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century. This research makes a comparison between the two films, tracing the aesthetic and political continuities and changes in the work of Michael Moore which happened throughout two decades, as well as its relation to the conditions of representation of class struggle in American culture. This work reflects on the rise of the Michael Moore phenomenon as part of a process of construction and deconstruction of a tradition of the American working class.

This dissertation’s main goal is to analyze the mobilizations brought about by Rio de Janeiro’s favelados in the frame of the União dos Trabalhadores Favelados, founded in 1954. Dismissing some inaccurate categories, such as that of “poors”, it characterizes the majority of favelados as members of the working class and, as such, subjects to structural determinations derived from the capitalist mode of production. From that point on, the analysis is aimed to the comprehension of the grassroots organization that was constitutive of UTF, as a pre-condition to the development of an alternative to the “negotiated control” system imposed by the state and the ruling classes. At last, it frames the incarnations assumed by that system in the 1945-1964 period, as responses to constant victories obtained by the favelados in their struggles.

Black and white women: a socio-historical study of domestic workers and their employers in the Eastern CapeCock, Jacklyn January 1981 (has links)
Domestic service constitutes one of the largest sources of employment for black women in South Africa. Yet it is a largely unstudied occupation. There has been no previous investigation of domestic workers in the Eastern Cape, and to date only two comprehensive studies of domestic workers in other areas of South Africa. This neglect is significant, for such inquiry involves questioning the accepted pattern of inequalities on which the entire social order is based.

Task specialization and organizational attachment: an empirical study of industrial blue-collar workers in Vancouver, British ColumbiaJamal, Muhammad January 1972 (has links)
The research reported in this thesis is an attempt to test empirically the proposition that specialization in jobs negatively affects the organizational attachment of industrial blue-collar workers. Task specialization refers to the condition where the components of work process are divided into various minute tasks and only a limited number of tasks are assigned to an individual job. In the present study task specialization was operationalized in terms of production-line mechanization in workers' departments. Organizational attachment refers to a specific kind of relationship between a worker and his organization in which the worker (1) accepts and supports the goals and policies of the employing organization, (2) shows a willingness to exert effort for the success of his employing organization, and (3) shows a strong desire to remain a member of his employing organization. The above three dimensions of organizational attachment were measured by asking various questions of workers.
The field work for this research was done among industrial workers in Vancouver, British Columbia. A total of fifteen companies were contacted over a period of four months. Of the nine companies which agreed to participate in the research, six were purposely selected in such a way as to have an equal number of workers at each level of production-line mechanization. Data were collected by the method of a structured questionnaire, as well as by direct observation. A total of 550 production workers in six companies were given the 'Organizational Attachment Questionnaire', and 68 percent (377) of these workers returned a completed questionnaire. An average of six to eight hours was spent in each company in observing the technological processes entailed in workers' jobs.
To measure the extent of association between production-line mechanization and organizational attachment, Somers' D, which is a strong monotonic asymmetric measure of association for ordinal variables, was computed. The zero order analysis suggested a negative association between production-line mechanization and overall organizational attachment. The first order analysis suggested that there was a negative association between production-line mechanization and overall organizational attachment only for workers who were in the middle age group (30-44), who were male, who had been in the company for less than five years, and who held less than three jobs in their employing organizations. It was also found that task repetition and task simplification were, respectively, negatively related with workers' willingness to exert effort for the success of the employing organization
and workers' desire to remain in the employing organization for an indefinite period of time. / Arts, Faculty of / Sociology, Department of / Graduate
