Vägen mellan original- och målspråk : En studie av översättarnas brottning med de språkliga nyanserna i tre svenska romaner

Wiig Berglund, Linn January 2017 (has links)
This study is based on the English translation of three well-known and beloved classics, The Emigrants, The people of Hemsö and The best of Pippi Longstocking. It examines what happens to language in the transition between the original language and the target language. The selected novels all consist of significant characteristics, which in the study are mentioned as linguistic nuances, and the goal with the study was to evaluate if the translators have managed to preserve and transmit the nuances into the English version. To determine if the translations can be described as good several theoretical concepts derived from Antonie Berman and Lawrence Venuti have been used. These concepts portray the many risks that translation can result in, i.e the fluency being disrupted by the replacement of the terms used in the original text etc. The study, which were implemented by a hermeneutic method, proved that the path between the original and target languages resulted in several significant changes in the linguistic nuances which in one way or another affected the reader's experiences. Some changes that have been detected happens when the translator tried to adopt the language to the audience of the foreign language meaning they had to distance himself from the linguistic nuances that allude to the Swedish culture and authoring style. Furthermore, the study has also proven that certain sequences in the original text differs significantly in relation to the translation because of the translator's deliberate choice  to  make  changes  regarding  for  example in  the expression  and the story. This study has also had a didactic approach based on the policy documents of the Swedish in upper secondary school. Based on the policy documents, which among other things should give students the opportunity to experience different perspectives and variations of the language, the study has analyzed how the selected novels and the translations of the same can be used in teaching to highlight new perspectives of the language. The study has been able to distinguish several changes that have occurred in the transition between the original and the translation, which could be of importance during discussions on how original texts are expressed within a new language and a new context.

PERFORMANCE RESULTS USING DATA QUALITY ENCAPSULATION (DQE) AND BEST SOURCE SELECTION (BSS) IN AERONAUTICAL TELEMETRY ENVIRONMENTS

Geoghegan, Mark, Schumacher, Robert 10 1900 (has links)
Flight test telemetry environments can be particularly challenging due to RF shadowing, interference, multipath propagation, antenna pattern variations, and large operating ranges. In cases where the link quality is unacceptable, applying multiple receiving assets to a single test article can significantly improve the overall link reliability. The process of combining multiple received streams into a single consolidated stream is called Best Source Selection (BSS). Recent developments in BSS technology include a description of the maximum likelihood detection approach for combining multiple bit sources, and an efficient protocol for providing the real-time data quality metrics necessary for optimal BSS performance. This approach is being standardized and will be included in Appendix 2G of IRIG-106-17. This paper describes the application of this technology and presents performance results obtained during flight testing.

Att leda för välmående och utveckling : -      En kvalitativ studie om hur välmående och utveckling främjas och uppfattas av ledare och medarbetare / Leadership through well-being and development : -A qualitative study on how well-being and development is encouraged and perceived by leaders and employees

Börjesson, Oskar, Åkerman, Martin January 2018 (has links)

Analysis of information classification best practices

Mikkelinen, Nicklas January 2015 (has links)
Information security, information management systems and more specifically information classification are important parts of an organisations information security. More and more information is being processed each day, and needs to be secured. Without proper information classification guidelines in place and lacking research within the subject, organisations could be vulnerable to attacks from third parties. This project displays a list of best practices found within information classification guidelines published online by different organisations. Out of 100 reviewed documents, 30 included information classification guidelines, and when analysed with a thematic analysis provides best practices within information classification.

How to select the right machine learning approach?

Sánchez Bermúdez, Yoel January 2013 (has links)
In the last years, the use of machine learning methods has increased remarkably and therefore the research in this field is becoming more and more important. Despite this fact, a high uncertainity when using machine learning models is still present. We have a wide variety of machine learning approaches such as decision trees or support vector machines and many applications where machine learning has been proved useful like medical diagnosis or computer vision, but all this possibilities make finding the best machine learning approach for a given application a time consuming and not welldefined process since there is not a rule that tells us what method to use for a given type of data.We attempt to build a system that, using machine learning, is capable to learn the best machine learning approach for a given application. For that, we are working on the hypothesis that similar types of data will have also the same machine learning approachas best learner. Classification algorithms will be the main focus of this research and different statistical measures will be used in order to find these similarities among the data.

Guidelines for responsible short-term global health activities: developing common principles

Lasker, Judith N., Aldrink, Myron, Balasubramaniam, Ramaswami, Caldron, Paul, Compton, Bruce, Evert, Jessica, Loh, Lawrence C., Prasad, Shailendra, Siegel, Shira 07 February 2018 (has links)
Background: Growing concerns about the value and effectiveness of short-term volunteer trips intending to improve health in underserved Global South communities has driven the development of guidelines by multiple organizations and individuals. These are intended to mitigate potential harms and maximize benefits associated with such efforts. Method: This paper analyzes 27 guidelines derived from a scoping review of the literature available in early 2017, describing their authorship, intended audiences, the aspects of short term medical missions (STMMs) they address, and their attention to guideline implementation. It further considers how these guidelines relate to the desires of host communities, as seen in studies of host country staff who work with volunteers. Results: Existing guidelines are almost entirely written by and addressed to educators and practitioners in the Global North. There is broad consensus on key principles for responsible, effective, and ethical programs-need for host partners, proper preparation and supervision of visitors, needs assessment and evaluation, sustainability, and adherence to pertinent legal and ethical standards. Host country staff studies suggest agreement with the main elements of this guideline consensus, but they add the importance of mutual learning and respect for hosts. Conclusions: Guidelines must be informed by research and policy directives from host countries that is now mostly absent. Also, a comprehensive strategy to support adherence to best practice guidelines is needed, given limited regulation and enforcement capacity in host country contexts and strong incentives for involved stakeholders to undertake or host STMMs that do not respect key principles.

Erfarenhetsåterföring för mark- och anläggningsarbeten inom Skanska BoKlok / Experience feedback within earthworks and construction work in Skanska BoKlok

Lundberg, Sofie, Gunnarsson, Samuel January 2015 (has links)
Well‐functioning knowledge transfer leads to more efficient and profitable processes within organizations due to the establishment of “best practicises” serving as guidelines for present and forthcoming projects. Within the industrial construction concept BoKlok, an assembly line process where the same construction is constantly repeated, Skanska and Ikea share this particular need. The tool presently used by the Skanska organization for knowledge transfer is Normallägen, describing “best practice” work processes in video and text. This concept is now set to expand to the BoKlok ground planning which currently lacks proper knowledge transfer. This thesis aims to identify/investigate the knowledge transfer process within the BoKlok concept. Is there any “best practices” to be used as future references so called Normallägen? The thesis is built upon a case study and a theoretical study of literature in conjunction with information from the Skanska and BoKlok intranet. The case study consists of interviews with organization members with a variety of positions at Skanska. Our results show that the current transfer of knowledge within BoKlok projects’ mostly is passed on by word of mouth between the management at different projects where knowledge is limited in person. According to the Skanska regulations every finalized project should have a final meeting regarding the follow up of knowledge transfer but this isn’t always the case. Construction planning is shown to be inadequate and most often the construction is started without the final construction plans. These plans also vary in substance and quality resulting in higher expenses in the end. Several suggestions/solutions have been given as a foundation for more “best practices” (Normallägen). There is however a need for a seamlessly integrated way of collecting all these ideas, experiences and “best practices” since few are reaching the “best practice” group within Skanska (Normallägesgruppen).

Právní postavení dítěte se zřetelem k participačnímu právu (srovnávací studie) / Legal position of a child with regard to the right of participation (comparative study)

Müllerová, Michelle January 2017 (has links)
Legal position of a child with regard to the right of participation This thesis is constructed as a comparison of the legal position of a child in the Czech Republic and England. The aim is to discuss the rights of a child in general with special regard to his or her right of participation and to evaluate how the rights are respected in both states. This thesis mainly underlines the common aspects as well as the main differences in the legislation while suggesting some possible changes. After the introduction, there are four main chapters subsequently divided into subsections. The first chapter explains the terms "child" and "the best interests of a child". The concept of "the best interests of a child" is firstly discussed in accordance with the General Comments published by the Committee on the Rights of the Child followed by the explanation on how the legislation of the compared states understands this term. The second chapter discusses how the rights of a child developed in the last decades whereas the starting point from which we generally speak about children rights is the beginning of the 20th century. The most important international agreements are mentioned, for example the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1924, Declaration of the Rights of the Child of 1959, International...

Non-algebraic convergence proofs for continuous-time fictitious play

Berger, Ulrich January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this technical note we use insights from the theory of projective geometry to provide novel and non-algebraic proofs of convergence of continuous-time fictitious play for a class of games. As a corollary we obtain a kind of equilibrium selection result, whereby continuous-time fictitious play converges to a particular equilibrium contained in a continuum of equivalent equilibria for symmetric 4x4 zero-sum games.
