The following work focuses on analyzing the construction process of the moral of the Brothers Grimm tales regarding the relation between pagan symbolism and Christian values. In sum, four Brothers Grimm’s tales were analyzed “Snow White” (“Schbeewittchen”), “The Water of Life” (“Das Wasser des Lebens”) e “Rumpelstiltskin” (“Rumpelstilzchen”) (originally published on Kinderund Hausmärchen, from 1812) e “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” (“Die Kinderzu Hameln”) (from DeustscheSagen, published in 1816). The literary analysis considered several important things such as space, time, characters, narrative structure, themes and conflicts. A deep research was necessary to understand the historical evolution of each tale. The literary analysis was done from the Portuguese translation of Kinder- und Hausmärchen, Contosmaravilhososinfantis e domésticos 1812-1815 (2012), translated by Christine Röhring, published by Cosac Naify. The Pied Piper of Hamelin was analyzed from the version translated by American scholar D. L. Ashliman from 2013, which is available in his personal academic web page. The theory base comes from several important scholars, such as Nelly Novaes Coelho (1998), Jack Zipes (2002), Maria Tatar (2004), Karin Volobuef (2011), D. L. Ashliman (2013), among others.

Efeitos psicológicos em irmãos saudáveis de crianças portadoras de cardiopatias congênitas / Psychological effects in healthy siblings of children with congenital heart defects

Andrea de Amorim Dórea 18 June 2010 (has links)
This study aimed to understand the psychological effects of congenital heart of siblings in healthy children. The literature review revealed that little attention has been paid to this issue, although it is known that the healthy siblings suffer from feeling excluded and isolated from family relationships and the treatment of children with chronic diseases. We evaluated five children, aged between three and eleven, whose siblings, at the time of data collection, were hospitalized for treatment of congenital heart disease. The research was conducted through qualitative analysis with psychoanalysis reference of semistructured interview with parents and observation play therapy hour with children. We found common themes in the experience of healthy siblings as change in family routine, with increased responsibilities and interest in and knowledge about the disease and treatment of their siblings. The healthy siblings predominantly expressed feelings of empathy and solidarity with the pain and discomfort of the child with heart disease, presenting behaviors of care for their siblings and family and, covertly, jealousy and rivalry. The play therapy hour had a interventional character for these children. Currently, the literature points to the need for interventions with this population. From the results of this research is expected to have contributed in knowledge about this healthy siblings and to create proposals for interventions in order to prevent or minimize possible adverse effects of living with a sibling with heart disease

Através de um mapeamento geral das obras, analisa-se a organização das estruturas sintáticas, a dimensão patêmica do discurso, a aspectualização actancial conferida aos sujeitos e as figuras que revestem as narrativas e evidenciam a temática da decadência / Shaped by memories and forgetfulness, the paths of memory traced in Dois irmãos, by Milton Hatoum, and Leite derramado, by Chico Buarque, denounce a past marked by ruins and anguish and, at the same time, reveal the profile of the narrators of the novels. In the light of the theoretical tools of Semiotics, the aim of this study is to examine the strategies deployed in these novels in order to verify, from each narrator’s memory narrative, how this profile is determined. Therefore, the organization of syntactical structures, the passions of speech, the subjects aspectualization given to the narrators and the figures that cover the stories and highlight the theme of decay will be analyzed through a general mapping of both novels

[en] THE GRIMM BROTHERSNULL COLLECTION: READING, TRANSLATION AND MELANCHOLY IN THE KINDER-UND HAUSMARCHEN ANTHOLOGY / [pt] O ACERVO DOS IRMÃOS GRIMM: LEITURA, TRADUÇÃO E MELANCOLIA NA COLETÂNEA, KINDER-UND HAUSMARCHEN

SYLVIA MARIA TRUSEN 21 June 2006 (has links)
[en] The comparison of the handwritten notes of the first (1812) and the last (1857) editions of the tales collected by Wilhem and Jacob Grimm in Kinder-und Hausm-rchen revealed a reading and translation process whose melancholic style suggests an intention to delineate not only an unit of fraternity, but also an unit of the nation that was being portrayed in the collectanea. Therefore, considering the conceptual pair of reading and translation, this study aimed at exploring the construction of the collectanea by comparing its two editions and the notes gathered in the book Ollenberg´s Manuscript. The interdisciplinary perspective of the study made it possible to catch a sight of the adaptation of the narratives in order to match its contemporary readership and to evidence the inherent conflict present in the process of adjusting the work to its new readership. Moreover, after having verified that some tales collected by the Grimm Brothers remained unpublished in Brazil - specially those marked by melancholy -, those pieces of work were translated into Portuguese in this study. As a result, this study also made it possible to understand the process of creating a work that gradually frees itself from the burden of the concept of what an original text is.

Neurodevelopmental characteristics of subsequent siblings of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome infants

Chapman, Rosandra Dawn 02 April 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Psychology) / Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the most prevalent cause of death in infants between one and twelve months of age. Most deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome occur between 1 and 4 months of age. There is a marked decrease after this age in the number of deaths classified as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It is usually defined as the sudden death of any infant usually during sleep which is unexpected by history and in which a thorough postmortem examination tails to demonstrate an adequate cause tor death (Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, 1989) • Epidemiologic, pathologic and physiologic data suggest the mechanism ot Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is complex, characterized by interaction at many levels ot the neural axis, between the organism and the environment and spanning both pre- and post-natal lite. Observations suggest that the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome infant has experienced adverse influences prenatally Which may make him peculiarly vulnerable to postnatal environmental stress (Valdes Dapena, 1988). However, the specific nature and cause of this condition continues to elude both scientists and practitioners. In the last few years research has shed some light on various epidemiologic aspects of the problem, on pathologic anatomy and on clinical issues such as the relative importance of spontaneous, prolonged, idiopathic apnea. Some Sudden Infant Death Syndrome victims showed evidence of neonatal brain dysfunction, including abnormalities in respiration, feeding and temperature regulation and have been shown to have pathologic abnormalities consistent with chronic hypoxia (Kelly' Shannon, 1982). Once again, however, the research appears not to be conclusive, leaving many unanswered questions...

Processes and patterns of dialog between deaf and hearing siblings during play

Van Horn, Dennis 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the processes and patterns of communicative interaction which preschool and elementary school-aged deaf and hearing siblings utilized to initiate, maintain and terminate dialogs during play. Specifically, the focus was to determine if the processes and patterns of communication differed when a deaf sibling interacted with an older hearing sibling who has been exposed primarily to a simultaneous visual-auditory (SimVA) pattern of communication, as compared to when a deaf sibling interacted with a younger hearing sibling who has been exposed to both a SimVA and a sequential visual (Seq V) pattern of communication. Video-taped playbouts were observed between each of two sibling dyads at play within a single family: (a) an older dyad composed of a seven-year-old hearing child and her five-year-old deaf sister, and (b) a younger dyad with the second-born deaf sister and her three-year-old hearing brother. The video-tapes were coded to determine: the kinds of play siblings engaged in; the use and expression of behavioral and communicative elements of attention-getting, exchange of information, and termination processes of dialogs; who initiated and terminated dialogs; the occurrence of turn-taking during message delivery; and the expression of patterns of communication used by siblings during dialogs. Only three of five possible kinds of play were actually noted, of which social play was the most frequently observed kind of play taking place between siblings within both dyads. In the older hearing and deaf sibling dyad, it was found that the older hearing sister predominately used visual processes and patterns of communicative interaction when conversing with her deaf sister, whereas the deaf sibling relied extensively on visual-auditory processes and patterns of communication when conversing with her hearing sister. In the younger dyad, visual-auditory patterns of communication predominated both hearing and deaf siblings' expression of processes and patterns of communication with each other. New terminology reflecting siblings' behavioral and communicative patterns of communication are introduced. This study represents the first known research examining the processes and patterns of deaf and hearing siblings' behavioral and communicative interactions of dialog. The findings are discussed in relation to potential applications to early intervention programs for hearing families with deaf and hearing siblings and to future research directions. Overall, the findings from this study appear to indicate that deaf and hearing siblings communicate in ways largely influenced by developmental maturation and the communicative environments to which each child has been exposed during language acquisition processes. The findings are also consistent with Vygotsky's theory of a sociocultural origin of language development. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate

Assessing Optimal Sibling Training Conditions: An Empirical Approach.

Merker, Stephanie K. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of play materials on the interactions between a child with autism and her sibling. Three conditions were assessed: open choice, materials chosen by the child with autism, and materials chosen by the typically developing sibling. Within each activity, measures of social interactions were assessed. Results of the assessment showed that more interactions occurred with a material chosen by the child with autism. After sibling training (targeting specific teaching skills), social interactions remained highest in the condition with materials chosen by the child with autism. The results are discussed in terms of a material assessment to optimize sibling training conditions and the importance of sibling relationships.
