Du Plessis, Schalk Willem January 2012 (has links)
This study was undertaken in an attempt to improve the vocational training in Electrical Systems and Construction done at the Sedibeng Further Education and Training Colleges. The development of vocational training in South Africa, as well as different approaches to effective teaching and learning, were investigated by doing a literature study. It was determined that a constructivist approach to teaching and learning that advocates an active, learner-centred approach to teaching and learning appears to be the most effective for vocational training. An empirical investigation was conducted to determine possible shortcomings in the current way of teaching, learning and assessment at Sedibeng Further Education and Training College. For this purpose, mixed method research with a triangulation design was employed. The quantitative part of the study utilized descriptive survey research with a questionnaire to establish Level 3 educator and learner viewpoints regarding the current nature of teaching, learning and assessment. A phenomenological strategy was used for the qualitative part of the study, which involved the use of semi-structured interviews with the management staff at the college, to obtain their perspectives regarding training at the college. The quantitative and qualitative data indicated weaknesses in the current approach to teaching, learning and assessment, and that teaching, learning and assessment practices could become more effective by incorporating constructivist teaching, learning and assessment principles that encourage active and interactive learning. Furthermore, a lack of teacher training and a lack of practical experience among educators, as well as inadequate infrastructure and ill-equipped facilities, are major contributing factors to ineffective vocational training. The practical contribution of the study is found in the teaching and learning programme for Electrical Systems and Construction based on constructivist principles that was developed to assist educators to improve the effectiveness of vocational training. / Thesis (PhD (Learning and Teaching))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013

The choice of learning and teaching support materials in inclusive classroom settings : "educators' experiences" / Phindiwe Aletta Motloung

Motloung, Phindiwe Aletta January 2008 (has links)
This study investigates educators' experiences in choosing material for learners in the inclusive classroom setting as clearly stated in chapter one. Chapter two explored the literature on the learning and teaching support materials and the processes involved. The definition of learning and teaching support materials was explored. The kinds, importance and role of learning and teaching support, were discussed and the role is seen as a vehicle which enhances the awareness for expression and opportunities to capture evidence of learners knowledge. Guidelines to consider in the process of selecting learning and teaching support materials and the utilization thereof, as well as the funding of learning and teaching support materials received attention. This chapter further explored the inclusive classroom where inclusion is defined; the nature of inclusive classroom was discussed. The benefits and the criticism of inclusive classroom settings were also explored. In chapter three, the empirical research design used in the study is discussed. Focus group interviews in qualitative study were used to explore educators' experiences in choosing learning and teaching support material in inclusive classroom settings. Chapter four highlighted the research methods used to investigate the problems of this study. The application of the focus interview was explained in detail because the focus group was used for the collection of data which was analysed and interpreted. The data revealed that educators experience a number of difficulties in choosing learning and teaching support materials for learners in inclusive classroom settings. The last chapter concludes the study with recommendations on the way to assist educators in choosing materials for learners in the inclusive classroom setting. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2008.

Processing of L2 words in bilingual children and adults : predictors, patterns, and tendencies

Zhao, Ting January 2015 (has links)
Within the context of foreign language learning, very little research has examined how learners process second language (L2) words in terms of which variables best predict their processing speed and which mechanisms best characterize bilingual lexical processing. The present study set out to address this gap by using a range of learner and lexical variables (such as vocabulary size, word length, and age of acquisition) as points of reference against which to identify the best predictors of children’s and adults' L2 lexical processing, and by comparing response latencies across stimulus conditions so as to identify the processing pattern specific to each age group. Thirty-nine primary-aged and 94 university-level Chinese learners of English performed a picture-naming task in English and then in Chinese, and then completed a Chinese-to-English task. The researcher analyzed and estimated how those learner and lexical variables predicted the recorded response latencies by means of multiple regression and structural equation modeling, and made cross-stimulus-condition comparisons with the use of analysis of variance. The results suggested that different aspects of vocabulary knowledge contributed significantly to predicting children's and adults' processing speed, and that shorter processing time was significantly and directly predicted by the younger age at which an L2 word was learned and its higher degree of word typicality. Both lexical association and conceptual mediation were present in L2 lexical processing irrespective of learners' age but in general the later an L2 word is learned, the greater the likelihood that the word is lexically accessed and processed. These results illustrate the crucial role that language experiences and conceptual structures play in influencing the ease or difficulty with which L2 lexical items are retrieved, and reflect the complexities and dynamics involved in processing bilingual lexicons. These findings will be discussed within the context of the role of research and theory in developing evidence-based pedagogical practice with a specific reference to vocabulary acquisition in children and adults learning foreign languages within input-limited contexts.

Bittencourt, Aline Alves 20 September 2011 (has links)
This research addresses the learning of the cartographic language mediated by the process of tactile didactic resources development, with the contributions of socio-historic perspective. The theoretical framework of language and tactile school cartographic sought to base discussions on the teaching of geography from the dialogues within the pedagogical mediation, enhancing the importance of cartographic language and its knowledge. The process of tactile materials development as mediation in learning was analyzed in view of two workshops offered about tactile maps to teachers and the interviews with them. Aiming to enhance the qualitative educational research and teachers reflections on their practice, the methodology based on action -research was used to collect data, such as collaborative and narrative elements as fundamental aspects. The mapping process was discussed with teachers as a mediator of learning the cartographic language, facing the challenges found in geography teaching. Also having in mind a social use of the cartographic language and considering the possibilities and changes in discourse as well the pedagogical practices. The author argues that teachers can be educational actors and producers of their work and resources, with theoretical and methodological basis for the activities planning, and having the act of mapping as significant process.

Barbosa Neto, Ozório Saturnino 10 November 2017 (has links)
This paper presents the results of a research carried out within the framework of the PIBID-Physics of USP between the years 2014 and 2015. It is a participant observation that had the main objective of identifying what four licensees thought about the motivation of the students . How do they take this issue into account? In addition, we identify their beliefs about teaching and learning, looking for evidence of an evolution in these beliefs during the period in which they participated in the group as well as whether there is a relationship between them. We use as data your direct statements, reports, analyzes and discussions that have occurred throughout the meetings of the group. We also conducted a semi-structured interview with each of the subjects. Through the results, we conclude that there is a relationship between their teaching and learning beliefs and their motivational beliefs. Supervisory teachers have an important role in relation to evolution, as do the courses taught by the licenciandos.

The multimodal genre video tutorial and its contributions to the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language by teenage students

Sumiya, Aline Hitomi 12 December 2016 (has links)
This dissertations goal is to study the teaching and learning of French by teenage students through the production of the multimodal genre video tutorial, as well as verify how the students developed the language capacities through a didactic sequence that aimed at the production of this genre. Our research was based mainly on the Socio-Discursive Interactionism (SDI) theoretical and methodological framework as developed by Bronckart (1999, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010) to understand human acting through language and its consequent development. This research is also based on the SDI textual model analysis to study the verbal aspects found in the video tutorial genre. Since verbal and nonverbal aspects are combined in this genre, we used the Socio-Interactionism Semiotics proposed by Leal (2011) in which the author suggests the union of the SDI analysis framework with the Grammar of Visual Design (GVD) developed by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). In addition, this research is based on the studies by Schneuwly and Dolz (2004/2012) about the use of textual genres as instruments in teaching and learning and about the concept of language capacities. Regarding the field of language didactics (L1 and L2), we also employed studies by SDI scholars (SCHNEUWLY; DOLZ, 2004/2012; CRISTOVÃO, 2014/2015; LOUSADA, 2014, MELÃO, 2014). In order to use the genre as an object of teaching, we analysed some texts and created a didactic model of it; then, we created a didactic sequence which we applied to two classes of teenage students. After applying it, we analysed the initial and final productions in order to discover if the students developed their language capacities. We had access to some excerpts of the teachers journal and to some conversations recorded between the students when doing their productions to have more clues about the development. The results showed that the students developed substantially their language capacities, in spite of the complexity of the genre due to the articulation of so many verbal and nonverbal elements. Moreover, the genre allowed the students to learn other knowledge that were not foreseen in our study. With this research, we hope to bring contributions to the field of teaching and learning of languages through textual genres, of multimodality and of emergent genres of the digital era.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Glaucia Marise.pdf: 2191981 bytes, checksum: ba42821b294837af6c0c6b305f2ac22f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-07 / This research sought to establish inter-relations between the results of the studies of the Piaget and Inhelder to the perception and representation of space and the process of teaching of geometry; identify as children establish the spatial relationships of topological nature, and projective Euclidian and highlight the contributions of those studies. Therefore, we organize activities adapted from the work of Piaget and Inhelder (1993) “The representation of space in the child” and proposed to a group of children aged eight and nine years of a school hall of Ponta Grossa, in the state of Paraná. We use a interview, which provided data for the analysis, with regard to the arguments and justifications of the children. We assumed to contribute to the teacher with the teaching of geometry is important that he understands how children establish the spatial relationships in the physical world to relate this world with the geometric. Evidence was found emphasizing that knowledge of this theory by the teacher, he can help interpret the responses of children and propose activities that they are able to achieve, including the reasons for their difficulties; We can say that the inter-relationships found relate to the fact the spatial relationships established in the physical world, concern forms, and travel distances in all this is study of geometry. It also could identify the relationships established by the children, showing to what extent they relate to geometric knowledge.

Pires, Carolina Zeferino January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation aims to present the implementation of a proposal for teaching reading and writing, based on the premises of Halliday's Systemic-functional linguistics (HALLIDAY, 2014, 2008, 1978) and Genres Theory proposed by the Sydney School (MARTIN; ROSE, 2008, 2012). The implementation aims to investigate how the Genres Pedagogy, based on the Learning and Teaching Cycle, can support in the processes of literacy in the classroom. The search is to understand the Learning and Teaching Cycle functioning for the reading and writing of journalistic news development, to discuss what difficulties or facilities the subjects presented and to analyze the texts produced by the learners. The Usina do Texto, a project offered to the students of the sixth year of elementary school in Porto Alegre municipal school system, was the environment in which the methodology precribed in the Learning and Teaching Cycle and in the interaction cycles was implemented. The project is based on the presuppositions of Genres Pedagogy of Sydney School and was constituted as the context of the present research. Based on a qualitative-interpretive research, the aim was to understand the functioning of the Learning and Teaching Cycle in the development of reading and writing of news. The analyzes of the texts produced by the students assisted in the proposed analysis and is established from the notion of the Context of Culture, genre, and the Context of Situation, register. Thus, as a result of the observations and of the textual analyzes, it is perceived that the learners mobilize the contextual and semantic available resources, addressed throughout the sta0ges of the Learning and Teaching Cycle. It is believed that this research can contribute to the theoretical discussions about genre under the bias of Sydney School.

A construção de discursos escritos sobre aquecimento global: análise das explicações dos alunos / Written discourse about global warming: analysis of students\' explanations

Leandrini, Sarah Milani de Moraes 26 August 2011 (has links)
Science education should be structured to provide conditions for students to engage in the scientific culture, learning not only concepts but also the specific practices and language of science, building an intellectual autonomy to make decisions in their real life. Under this assumption, we propose to investigate what students write when they opine about global warming and how they appropriate a publicizing material on the subject. The texts analyzed are from a composition contest sponsored by a television broadcasting company in the region of Ribeirão Preto (SP) with the theme \"Global Warming: what do I have to do with it?\" and the publicizing material is a DVD produced by the company for the schools. We sought to characterize the students\' texts according to the genre of speech that is predominant, the main ideas and the approach and discourse that are present, how they use the scientific knowledge and what concept of greenhouse effect they presented. We analyzed the DVD with the same approach and compared it with the contents of the compositions. Our results show that most students write argumentative and narrative texts about the causes and consequences of global warming linked to human activities and the measures aiming to resolve the problem. They predominantly use personal and environmental dimensions to compose their texts, and less than half of them use an approach or language close to the scientific. Half of the students who use scientific knowledge in their essays provide some kind of explanation that justifies their assertions. Most of them did not mention greenhouse effect in their texts, and few have established the relationship that the greenhouse effect causes global warming, showing little conceptual understanding. Regarding the appropriation of the DVD, in general, we could say that the students do not position themselves before this material, but when we specify the main ideas and each dimension of the texts we see that they question some of the contents of the DVD. We conclude that moral and personal values and environmental awareness are important when it comes to this kind of problem, but we must also pay greater attention to the learning of scientific knowledge if we want students to understand the phenomenon and know how to choose the best alternatives for resolving the problem.
