Among studies of slavery in Barbacena, Minas Gerais, some argue the thesis that regional economic development kept the slave labor on farms until the imposition of the abolition of slavery. In our research, we showed that the concentration of ownership and economic crisis of the captive region, articulated the legal changes instituted by the Rio Branco Law or Ventre Livre Law, was that, in fact, contributed to the preservation of slavery until 1888. In this sense, slave families played a key role in maintaining social order in an impoverished economy. It's what we try to demonstrate in this study through carefully analysis of the documents from Arquivo Histórico Municipal “Altair Savassi” during the period 1870 to 1888 in the jurisdiction of Barbacena, Minas Gerais.

A Diáspora Africana no litoral Norte paulista: desafios e possibilidades de uma abordagem arqueológica / African Diaspora in the North coast os São Paulo: challenges and possibilities of an archaeological approach.

Luciana Bozzo Alves 07 February 2017 (has links)
This research aimed at understanding the historic processes regarding the African Diaspora in the north coast of São Paulo from an archaeological perspective. With the prohibition of slave trading in the mid-nineteenth century, the north coast of São Paulo was the scene of countless clandestine landings on the beaches of the region, once it was very close to the Paraíba Valley, where coffee cultivation was expanding. Through the integration of diverse sources such as material hard evidence, landscape indicators, spoken narratives, secondary sources and a particular focus on Historiography, it was possible to draw interpretative possibilities about the African diaspora in the region under study. Therefore, these surveys have made possible for the north coast region of São Paulo to be assigned as a high potential study place of archaeological sites and remains related to the theme, both in the mainland and on the island environment, either as surfaced or immersed compartments.

By the ethnography method, it can be pointed out their collective memory and historical documents connected to the old ladies who were slaves owners that originated this collective, since a leaving of lands. The slave heritage, the strategies to accomplish the territories and collective memory are elements that contribute to the black people of this community self-identification as quilombolas . From this problematic of self-identification as quilombola to this specific rural black community, the following questions may appear: from the assumption that social identify is redefined as quilombola , which are the identification markers that contribute to the process of self-identification and which are the peasant s reproduction strategies/territorialization of the mentioned community that benefit the people s self-identification as quilombolas , recognizing the social network and the external mediators. Thereby, the ethnographic text develops itself presenting data about the collective memory, identity, territory strategies of the Associação Quilombola Cerro das Velhas on the elaboration of quilombola self-identification, dynamic and relational process.

At this time, these women were inserted in an incipient urban space, mainly characterized by the presence of maritime workers and commerce men. The poor women, especially the African descents ones, needed work to obtain money in order to guarantee the survival of themselves and their families. This way, their behaviors did not fit into the ideal woman concept the bourgeois society had. The research was made from two books of arrestments records in the jail of the city of Rio Grande, which contain the incarcerations of both slave and free women (including the emancipated ones). From the data collected, it was possible to notice that the slave ones were arrested by demand of their master. Regarding the free ones, the reasons were mostly related to drinking, disturbing and walking around in inappropriate times . Most of the women prisoners were black or brown. There was a minority of white women arrested, among which Germans, Portugueses and Uruguayans. Facing this situation, it was evident that the Rio Grande Jail, during the Empire period, was a place of punishment of black and brown poor women who presented behavior considered of disorder by the authorities / Essa dissertação analisa as trabalhadoras escravas e livres, presas na cadeia da cidade do Rio Grande, no período compreendido entre 1864 e 1875.

The present study analyzes architectural structures uncovered during archaeological excavations in the vicinity of the slave quarters at the Monjope Sugar Mill. Considering that the current spatial disposition of the mill does not necessarily reflect the diverse historical contexts of use, it is of interest here to analyze the remains and determine to which period they belong, individually or collectively, and what function or functions they might have served. Using primary and secondary historical sources, material and architectural data, this study seeks to interpret and define the relations between archaeological and existing structures from a perspective of remodeled spaces within changing historical contexts.

Rewriting the present: post traumatic slave syndrome as a foundation for social determinants of health

Presumey-Leblanc, Garssandra I. 23 November 2020 (has links)
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are often used to discuss health inequities and systemic barriers experienced by minority populations. In the United States, the intersection of SDOH leaves these populations vulnerable to negative health outcomes. Missing from the SDOH discourse are the underlying historical causes for these disparities. Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) have undertaken the role of educating the health and human services (HHS) workforce on interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural competence, and the skills to recognize experiences of negative SDOH. However, current research does not explore the foundational impact of historical trauma, more specifically Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS), on experiences of negative SDOH. This ethnography primarily uses the personal accounts of black female HHS workforce members and participant observation from within a MLP to examine how historical trauma acts as a foundation for understanding the complex interactions of SDOH. The SDOH discourse does not challenge the medical and legal institutions that contribute to how minority populations experience negative SDOH. As currently structured, MLPs unintentionally reproduce a pedagogical narrative that erases the lived experiences of SDOH by only focusing on individual factors and not systems. Black female HHS workforce members agree that historical context is missing (e.g. PTSS) from the SDOH discourse and contemporary experiences of racism and discrimination. Historical context would change how HHS workforce members advocate for their patients as well as engage in system-challenging praxis within the medical and legal institutions. This suggests the need to examine how American institutions exclude particular histories and reinforces a white supremacist and patriarchal narrative.

Genetické algoritmy – implementace paralelního zpracování / Genetic Algorithms - Implementation of Multiprocessing

Tuleja, Martin January 2018 (has links)
Genetic algorithms are modern algorithms intended to solve optimization problems. Inspiration originates in evolutionary principles in nature. Parallelization of genetic algorithms provides not only faster processing but also new and better solutions. Parallel genetic algorithms are also closer to real nature than their sequential counterparts. This paper describes the most used models of parallelization of genetic algorithms. Moreover, it provides the design and implementation in programming language Python. Finally, the implementation is verified in several test cases.

On Blackness and Being: Cameron Awkward-Rich’s Sympathetic Little Monster(s)

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis project examines the intertextuality between Cameron Awkward-Rich’s poetry collection Sympathetic Little Monster (2016) and earlier African American texts: Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents of a Slave Girl (1860) and Toni Morrison’s Sula (1973). Focusing on intertextuality and the trope of the train, this project analyzes Awkward-Rich’s collection which details how black bodies are still subjected to oppression and anti-black/anti-trans violence. His poems explore how black trans subjects are inhibited from reaching “arrival,” wholeness, and freedom in one’s representation and expression of their identity. White supremacy and constructs of race and gender attempt to dictate the speakers’ movements, possibilities, and mobility. Paying close attention to references to the past and the trope of the train, I examine how Awkward-Rich’s poetry interrogates black trans legibility, subjectivity, and subjugation. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
