Os recentes avanços experimentados pela tecnologia CMOS tem permitido a fabricação de transistores em dimensões submicrônicas, possibilitando a integração de dezenas de milhões de dispositivos numa única pastilha de silício, os quais podem ser usados na implementação de sistemas eletrônicos muito complexos. Este grande aumento na complexidade dos projetos fez surgir uma demanda por ferramentas de verificação eficientes e sobretudo que incorporassem modelos físicos e computacionais mais adequados. A verificação de timing objetiva determinar se as restrições temporais impostas ao projeto podem ou não ser satisfeitas quando de sua fabricação. Ela pode ser levada a cabo por meio de simulação ou por análise de timing. Apesar da simulação oferecer estimativas mais precisas, ela apresenta a desvantagem de ser dependente de estímulos. Assim, para se assegurar que a situação crítica é considerada, é necessário simularem-se todas as possibilidades de padrões de entrada. Obviamente, isto não é factível para os projetos atuais, dada a alta complexidade que os mesmos apresentam. Para contornar este problema, os projetistas devem lançar mão da análise de timing. A análise de timing é uma abordagem independente de vetor de entrada que modela cada bloco combinacional do circuito como um grafo acíclico direto, o qual é utilizado para estimar o atraso do circuito. As primeiras ferramentas de análise de timing utilizavam apenas a topologia do circuito para estimar o atraso, sendo assim referenciadas como analisadores de timing topológicos. Entretanto, tal aproximação pode resultar em estimativas demasiadamente pessimistas, uma vez que os caminhos mais longos do grafo podem não ser capazes de propagar transições, i.e., podem ser falsos. A análise de timing funcional, por sua vez, considera não apenas a topologia do circuito, mas também as relações temporais e funcionais entre seus elementos. As ferramentas de análise de timing funcional podem diferir por três aspectos: o conjunto de condições necessárias para se declarar um caminho como sensibilizável (i.e., o chamado critério de sensibilização), o número de caminhos simultaneamente tratados e o método usado para determinar se as condições de sensibilização são solúveis ou não. Atualmente, as duas classes de soluções mais eficientes testam simultaneamente a sensibilização de conjuntos inteiros de caminhos: uma baseia-se em técnicas de geração automática de padrões de teste (ATPG) enquanto que a outra transforma o problema de análise de timing em um problema de solvabilidade (SAT). Apesar da análise de timing ter sido exaustivamente estudada nos últimos quinze anos, alguns tópicos específicos não têm recebido a devida atenção. Such increase in complexity of designs has originated a need for more efficient verification tools that could incorporate more appropriate physical and computational models. Timing verification targets at determining whether the timing constraints imposed to the design may be satisfied or not. It can be performed by using circuit simulation or by timing analysis. Although simulation tends to furnish the most accurate estimates, it presents the drawback of being stimuli dependent. Hence, in order to ensure that the critical situation is taken into account, one must exercise all possible input patterns. Obviously, this is not possible to accomplish due to the high complexity of current designs. To circumvent this problem, designers must rely on timing analysis. Timing analysis is an input-independent verification approach that models each combinational block of a circuit as a direct acyclic graph, which is used to estimate the critical delay. First timing analysis tools used only the circuit topology information to estimate circuit delay, thus being referred to as topological timing analyzers. However, such method may result in too pessimistic delay estimates, since the longest paths in the graph may not be able to propagate a transition, that is, may be false. Functional timing analysis, in turn, considers not only circuit topology, but also the temporal and functional relations between circuit elements. Functional timing analysis tools may differ by three aspects: the set of sensitization conditions necessary to declare a path as sensitizable (i.e., the so-called path sensitization criterion), the number of paths simultaneously handled and the method used to determine whether sensitization conditions are satisfiable or not. Currently, the two most efficient approaches test the sensitizability of entire sets of paths at a time: one is based on automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) techniques and the other translates the timing analysis problem into a satisfiability (SAT) problem. Cache design and timing analysis for preemptive multi-tasking real-time uniprocessor systems

In this thesis, we propose an approach to estimate the Worst Case Response Time (WCRT) of each task in a preemptive multi-tasking single-processor real-time system utilizing an L1 cache. The approach combines inter-task cache eviction analysis and intra-task cache access analysis to estimate the Cache Related Preemption Delay (CRPD). CRPD caused by preempting task(s) is then incorporated into WCRT analysis. We also propose a prioritized cache to reduce CRPD by exploiting cache partitioning technique. Our WCRT analysis approach is then applied to analyze the behavior of a prioritized cache. Four sets of applications with up to six concurrent tasks running are used to test our WCRT analysis approach and the prioritized cache. The experimental results show that our WCRT analysis approach can tighten the WCRT estimate by up to 32% (1.4X) over prior state-of-the-art. By using a prioritized cache, we can reduce the WCRT estimate of tasks by up to 26%, as compared to a conventional set associative cache.

Algorithms and Data Structures for Efficient Timing Analysis of Asynchronous Real-time Systems

This thesis presents a framework to verify asynchronous real-time systems based on model checking. These systems are modeled by using a common modeling formalism named Labeled Petri-nets(LPNs). In order to verify the real-time systems algorithmically, the zone-based timing analysis method is used for LPNs. It searches the state space with timing information (represented by zones). When there is a high degree of concurrency in the model, firing concurrent enabled transitions in different order may result in different zones, and these zones may be combined without affecting the verification result. Since the zone-based method could not deal with this problem efficiently, the POSET timing analysis method is adopted for LPNs. It separates concurrency from causality and generates an exactly one zone for a single state. But it needs to maintain an extra POSET matrix for each state. In order to save time and memory, an improved zone-based timing analysis method is introduced by integrating above two methods. It searches the state space with zones but eliminates the use of the POSET matrix, which generates the same result as with the POSET method. To illustrate these methods, a circuit example is used throughout the thesis. Since the state space generated is usually very large, a graph data structure named multi-value decision diagrams (MDDs) is implemented to store the zones compactly. In order to share common clock value of dierent zones, two zone encoding methods are described: direct encoding and minimal constraint encoding. They ignore the unnecessary information in zones thus reduce the length of the integer tuples. The effectiveness of these two encoding methods is demonstrated by experimental result of the circuit example.

Evaluation of a method for identifying timing models

In today’s world, embedded systems which have very large and highly configurable software systems, consisting of hundreds of tasks with huge lines of code and mostly with real-time constraints, has replaced the traditional systems. Generally in real-time systems, the WCET of a program is a crucial component, which is the longest execution time of a specified task. WCET is determined by WCET analysis techniques and the values produced should be tight and safe to ensure the proper timing behavior of a real-time system. Static WCET is one of the techniques to compute the upper bounds of the execution time of programs, without actually executing the programs but relying on mathematical models of the software and the hardware involved. Mathematical models can be used to generate timing estimations on source code level when the hardware is not yet fully accessible or the code is not yet ready to compile. In this thesis, the methods used to build timing models developed by WCET group in MDH have been assessed by evaluating the accuracy of the resulting timing models for a number of combinations of hardware architecture. Furthermore, the timing model identification is extended for various hardware platforms, like advanced architecture with cache and pipeline and also included floating-point instructions by selecting benchmarks that uses floating-points as well.

L'interaction sociale, l'éducation et la santé ne sont que quelques exemples de domaines dans lesquels l'évolution rapide de la technologie a eu un grand impact sur la qualité de vie. Les entreprises s’appuient de plus en plus sur les systèmes embarqués pour augmenter leur productivité, leur efficacité et leurs valeurs. Dans les usines, la précision des robots tend à remplacer la polyvalence humaine. Bien que les appareils connectés comme les drônes, les montres intelligentes ou les maisons intelligentes soient de plus en plus populaires ces dernières années, ce type de technologie a été utilisé depuis longtemps dans les industries concernées par la sécurité des utilisateurs. L’industrie avionique utilise des ordinateurs pour ses produits depuis 1972 avec la production du premier avion A300; elle a atteint des progrès étonnants avec le développement du premier avion Concorde en 1976 en dépassant de nombreuses années les avions de son époque, et ça a été considéré comme un miracle de la technologie. Certaines innovations et connaissances acquises pour le Concorde sont toujours utilisées dans les modèles récents comme A380 ou A350. Un système embarqué est un système à microprocesseur qui est construit pour contrôler une fonction ou une gamme de fonctions et qui n’est pas conçu pour être programmé par l'utilisateur final de la même manière qu'un ordinateur personnel. Un système temps-réel est un système de traitement de l’information qui doit répondre aux stimuli d’entrées générées de manière externe dans une période finie et spécifiée. Le comportement de ces systèmes prend en compte non seulement l'exactitude dépend non seulement du résultat logique mais aussi du temps dans lequel il a été livré. Les systèmes temps-réel peuvent être trouvés dans des industries comme l'aéronautique, l'aérospatiale, l'automobile ou l’industrie ferroviaire mais aussi dans les réseaux de capteurs, les traitements d'image, les applications multimédias, les technologies médicales, les robotiques, les communications, les jeux informatiques ou les systèmes ménagers. Dans cette thèse, nous nous concentrons sur les systèmes temps-réel embarqués et pour la facilité des notations, nous leur nommons simplement des systèmes temps réel. Nous pourrions nous référer aux systèmes cyber-physiques si tel est le cas. Le pire temps d’exécution (WCET) d'une tâche représente le temps maximum possible pour qu’elle soit exécutée. Le WCET est obtenu après une analyse de temps et souvent il ne peut pas être déterminé avec précision en déterminant toutes les exécutions possibles. C'est pourquoi, dans l'industrie, les mesures sont faites uniquement sur un sous-ensemble de scénarios possibles, celui qui générerait les temps d'exécution les plus élevés, et une limite supérieure de temps d’exécution est estimé en ajoutant une marge de sécurité au plus grand temps observé. L’analyses de temps est un concept clé qui a été utilisé dans les systèmes temps-réel pour affecter une limite supérieure aux WCET des tâches ou des fragments de programme. Cette affectation peut être obtenue soit par analyse statique, soit par analyse des mesures. Les méthodes statiques et par mesure, dans leurs approches déterministes, ont tendance à être extrêmement pessimistes. Malheureusement, ce niveau de pessimisme et le sur-provisionnement conséquent ne peut pas être accepté par tous les systèmes temps-réels, et pour ces cas, d'autres approches devraient être prises en considération. / In our times, we are surrounded by technologies meant to improve our lives, to assure its security, or programmed to realize different functions and to respect a series of constraints. We consider them as embedded systems or often as parts of cyber-physical systems. An embedded system is a microprocessor-based system that is built to control a function or a range of functions and is not designed to be programmed by the end user in the same way that a PC is. The Worst Case Execution Time (WCET) of a task represents the maximum time it can take to be executed. The WCET is obtained after analysis and most of the time it cannot be accurately determined by exhausting all the possible executions. This is why, in industry, the measurements are done only on a subset of possible scenarios (the one that would generate the highest execution times) and an execution time bound is estimated by adding a safety margin to the greatest observed time. Amongst all branches of real-time systems, an important role is played by the Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES) domain. CRTESs are widely being used in fields like automotive, avionics, railway, health-care, etc. The performance of CRTESs is analyzed not only from the point of view of their correctness, but also from the perspective of time. In the avionics industry such systems have to undergo a strict process of analysis in order to fulfill a series of certification criteria demanded by the certifications authorities, being the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in Europe or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in United States. The avionics industry in particular and the real-time domain in general are known for being conservative and adapting to new technologies only when it becomes inevitable. For the avionics industry this is motivated by the high cost that any change in the existing functional systems would bring. Any change in the software or hardware has to undergo another certification process which cost the manufacturer money, time and resources. Despite their conservative tendency, the airplane producers cannot stay inactive to the constant change in technology and ignore the performance benefices brought by COTS processors which nowadays are mainly multi-processors. As a curiosity, most of the microprocessors found in airplanes flying actually in the world, have a smaller computation power than a modern home PC. Their chips-sets are specifically designed for embedded applications characterized by low power consumption, predictability and many I/O peripherals. In the actual context, where critical real-time systems are invaded by multi-core platforms, the WCET analysis using deterministic approaches becomes difficult, if not impossible. The time constraints of real-time systems need to be verified in the context of certification. This verification, done during the entire development cycle, must take into account architectures more and more complex. These architectures increase the cost and complexity of actual, deterministic, tools to identify all possible time constrains and dependencies that can occur inside the system, risking to overlook extreme cases. An alternative to these problems is the probabilistic approach, which is more adapted to deal with these hazards and uncertainty and which allows a precise modeling of the system. 2. Contributions. The contribution of the thesis is three folded containing the conditions necessary for using the theory of extremes on executions time measurements, the methods developed using the theory of extremes for analyzing real-time systems and experimental results. 2.1. Conditions for use of EVT in the real-time domain. In this chapter we establish the environment in which our work is done. The use of EVT in any domain comes with a series of restrictions for the data being analyzed. In our case the data being analyzed consists in execution time measurements.

This thesis work formulates an unknown navigation problem as a Markov decision process (MDP), supported by models of traffic participants and userspace. Instead of modeling a traditional MDP, this work formulates a Multi-policy decision making (MPDM) in a shared space scenario with pedestrians and vehicles. The employed model enables a unified and robust self-driving of the ego vehicle by selecting a desired policy along the pre-planned path. Obstacle avoidance is coupled within the navigation module performing a detour off the planned path and obtaining a reward on task completion and penalizing for collision with others. In addition to this, the thesis work is further extended by analyzing the real-time constraints of the proposed model. The performance of the implemented framework is evaluated in a simulation environment on a typical construction (quarry) scenario. The effectiveness and efficiency of the elected policy verify the desired behavior of the autonomous vehicle.

Modelling and Analysis of Interconnects for Deep Submicron Systems-on-Chip

The last few decades have been a very exciting period in thedevelopment of micro-electronics and brought us to the brink ofimplementing entire systems on a single chip, on a hithertounimagined scale. However an unforeseen challenge has croppedup in the form of managing wires, which have become the mainbottleneck in performance, masking the blinding speed of activedevices. A major problem is that increasingly complicatedeffects need to be modelled, but the computational complexityof any proposed model needs to be low enough to allow manyiterations in a design cycle. This thesis addresses the issue of closed form modelling ofthe response of coupled interconnect systems. Following astrict mathematical approach, second order models for thetransfer functions of coupled RC trees based on the first andsecond moments of the impulse response are developed. The2-pole-1-zero transfer function that is the best possible fromthe available information is obtained for the signal path fromeach driver to the output in multiple aggressor systems. Thisallows the complete response to be estimated accurately bysumming up the individual waveforms. The model represents theminimum complexity for a 2-pole-1-zero estimate, for this classof circuits. Also proposed are new techniques for the optimisation ofwires in on-chip buses. Rather than minimising the delay overeach individual wire, the configuration that maximises thetotal bandwidth over a number of parallel wires isinvestigated. It is shown from simulations that there is aunique optimal solution which does not necessarily translate tothe maximum possible number of wires, and in fact deviatesconsiderably from it when the resources available for repeatersare limited. Analytic guidelines dependent only on processparameters are derived for optimal sizing of wires andrepeaters. Finally regular tiled architectures with a commoncommunication backplane are being proposed as being the mostefficient way to implement systems-on-chip in the deepsubmicron regime. This thesis also considers the feasibility ofimplementing a regular packet-switched network-on-chip in atypical future deep submicron technology. All major physicalissues and challenges are discussed for two differentarchitectures and important limitations are identified.

Enabling Timing Analysis of Complex Embedded Software Systems

Cars, trains, trucks, telecom networks and industrial robots are examples of products relying on complex embedded software systems, running on embedded computers. Such systems may consist of millions of lines of program code developed by hundreds of engineers over many years, often decades. Over the long life-cycle of such systems, the main part of the product development costs is typically not the initial development, but the software maintenance, i.e., improvements and corrections of defects, over the years. Of the maintenance costs, a major cost is the verification of the system after changes has been applied, which often requires a huge amount of testing. However, today's techniques are not sufficient, as defects often are found post-release, by the customers. This area is therefore of high relevance for industry. Complex embedded systems often control machinery where timing is crucial for accuracy and safety. Such systems therefore have important requirements on timing, such as maximum response times. However, when maintaining complex embedded software systems, it is difficult to predict how changes may impact the system's run-time behavior and timing, e.g., response times.Analytical and formal methods for timing analysis exist, but are often hard to apply in practice on complex embedded systems, for several reasons. As a result, the industrial practice in deciding the suitability of a proposed change, with respect to its run-time impact, is to rely on the subjective judgment of experienced developers and architects. This is a risky and inefficient, trial-and-error approach, which may waste large amounts of person-hours on implementing unsuitable software designs, with potential timing- or performance problems. This can generally not be detected at all until late stages of testing, when the updated software system can be tested on system level, under realistic conditions. Even then, it is easy to miss such problems. If products are released containing software with latent timing errors, it may cause huge costs, such as car recalls, or even accidents. Even when such problems are found using testing, they necessitate design changes late in the development project, which cause delays and increases the costs. This thesis presents an approach for impact analysis with respect to run-time behavior such as timing and performance for complex embedded systems. The impact analysis is performed through optimizing simulation, where the simulation models are automatically generated from the system implementation. This approach allows for predicting the consequences of proposed designs, for new or modified features, by prototyping the change in the simulation model on a high level of abstraction, e.g., by increasing the execution time for a particular task. Thereby, designs leading to timing-, performance-, or resource usage problems can be identified early, before implementation, and a late redesigns are thereby avoided, which improves development efficiency and predictability, as well as software quality. The contributions presented in this thesis is within four areas related to simulation-based analysis of complex embedded systems: (1) simulation and simulation optimization techniques, (2) automated model extraction of simulation models from source code, (3) methods for validation of such simulation models and (4) run-time recording techniques for model extraction, impact analysis and model validation purposes. Several tools has been developed during this work, of which two are in commercialization in the spin-off company Percepio AB.
