This dissertation is the result of fieldwork conducted between 2011 and 2013 in Tourém , a rural border village between Galicia (Spain) and Portugal . The main focus of the work is the analysis of socio - territorial transformations happening in the village since the late 1960s and early 1970s , at what time the rise of contemporary emigration peaked . We work analysing two different aspects of the changes taking place in the village of Tourém: social and territorial transformations understood by the word of terra. A terra (land) in this context is a highly analytical category , a polysemic term used by the villagers of Tourém that refers to the village from the basis of my land (minha terra). These terras would also be the different destinations of emigrants for those who passed through neighboring village, and finally terra, also refers to the land's agriculture and livestock that are the most important economic activities. Through the life trajectories of the village people and their family histories, we combine theory and ethnographic descriptions with the uses and disuses of the Tourém's terra; as well as different social groups during their respective times who live in the village . More explicitly conversed with concepts such as territoriality , territory and history of the place through the narratives of the families, residents and life trajectories / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestre em Antropologia Social

EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT FEEDBACK AND REPRESENTATIONS OF AN IDEAL TRAJECTORY IN A DRIVING SIMULATOR

Cianciulli, Michelangelo January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop some kind of feedback in a driving simulator aimed at helping drivers in following the ideal trajectory and let human testers use it, in  order  to  analyze  which  feedback  is  best  perceived,  and  if it is  also  the  one which allows the drivers to follow the ideal trajectory. The project implemented two different representations  based  on  theories  from  traffic  research  which  was  compared  in  an experiment  with  29 subjects.  The  first  representation  is  a  drawn  trajectory  and  the second one uses drawn points near the tangent point. This  work  is  based  on  a  driving  simulator developed  for  a  previous study using  the Unity3D  engine.  Furthermore,  the  driving  simulator  is  developed  on  a  low-cost hardware infrastructure. The  test  subjects  generally gave  a good  feedback  on  the  simulator as  a  whole  and analysis of the data, even if biased by a mean high speed caused by a general low speed perception,  shows  a  clear  pattern  in  which  the  use  of  drawn  trajectory  leads to performances closer to the ideal trajectory. This representation has also been valuated as  better  in  the questionnaire,  and  hence  from  the  available  data  it  seems  possible  to say  that  this  kind  of  feedback  is  better  perceived  and  leads  to  better  performances compared to the other one.

L'usage politique des droits de l'Homme : trajectoires militantes et répertoires discursifs des nouvelles gauches argentines (1971-2012) / The political uses of human rights : trajectories of political activism and discursive repertoires of the Argentinean new lefts (1971-2012)

Copello, David 22 September 2017 (has links)
This research explores the relationship between the Argentinean revolutionary « New Lefts » and human rights mobilizations since the 1970s. Drawing on both archival work and interviews, it combines approaches from political sociology and the history of political ideas to reconstruct the trajectories of political activism of an informal group of actors, and proposes an analysis of their discursive repertoires. The first part shows that the New Lefts were pioneers in the emergence of human rights as a political discourse in Argentina in the early 1970s. This provided the basis for a hybridization process, in which political radicalness and the use of a juridical vocabulary were intertwined in a context of dictatorship. The second part shows how, although a liberal conception of human rights prevailed in the 1980s, this original radical discourse survived after the reestablishment of the rule of law. It developed and became more precise through a series of tests (trial of the juntas, incrimination of revolutionary activism, attack of a military unit by an armed left-wing group). The third part, lastly, underlines the fact that current uses of certain terms for describing and discussing the period of dictatorship (“genocide”, “30 000 disappeared”) can only be understood in line with the previously studied trajectories, which give them a sui generis meaning. In that perspective, the contemporary discursive repertoire of revolutionary human rights is the result of a long evolution and can only be understood in light of that evolution. Moreover, understanding this history sheds fresh light on how a new radical democratic common sense was established among the Argentinean left.

ABRINDO O LIVRO DAS SUAS VIDAS: TRAJETÓRIAS DE FORMAÇÃO DE QUATRO PROFESSORAS NEGRAS / OPENING THE BOOK OF ITS LIVES: TRAJECTORIES OF FORMATION OF FOUR BLACK TEACHERS

Santos, Fernanda Gabriela Soares dos 28 June 2010 (has links)
The research called Opening the book of its lives: formation trajectories of four black teachers were developed and presented to the Program of Post-Graduation in Education, Master of the Center of Education of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in the line Formation, to know and Professional Development, having as objective to investigate the personal and professional trajectory of four pertaining black teachers of different generations, as well as its imaginary and possible significances of being a black teacher at distinct moments of the History of Brazil. To this, had been invited four teachers who had studied at different moments and that also had marked my personal and professional history, even so two of them have almost the same age possess a trajectory of very different life. This thematic one was being constructed from my performance as professor of the basic education, my studies on blackness, sort and education, of my participation in a group of research and, over all, from my proper history of life. I found in the autobiographical narrative a promising way to develop this work, since what one searched was an approach of its imaginary ones and its possible fights against the instituted whiteness. The register was carried through by the writing of the half-structuralized interviews and its posterior transcription. Used as benchmarks Bosi (2004), Perrot (1997), Gomes (2009) and Castoriadis (1982). I perceived, in its narratives, many approaches: the fight with the socioeconomic question, the choice for the Teaching, the strong presence of the figure maternal in its lives. Also some divergences had been found, in function even though of the secular line that separates them. Reconstruct the history of black women means looking at the history of gender/ethnicity of those who always stayed on the sidelines of historical processes. I point out that the work, beyond having produced a formation in the collaborators, as told for them, also me auto formation resulted in formation. For all of us its research produced another look on the Teaching, on the questions of blackness, sort and the teachers who we were at the beginning are not the same ones that were formed themselves/self formed. Important to note that their individual stories are also part of the collective history, each respondent brought brands that are part of their individual careers and, concomitantly are similar to the larger issues. The struggle for survival, the question of religion, the imagery of daily life were some categories that appeared on all the voices and the other showing that the singular mark of the generation they belong to, the year they were born, the era in which they lived also Social enrolling in the individual, the memory of the railroad to the oldest contributor, and the issue of racial quotas for the youngest contributor.

The Back Way To Europe & Everything in Between : A Study of Migration Culture in The Gambia

Jobarteh, Aida January 2017 (has links)
Crossing the Sahara to reach Libya for the purpose of onward migration across the Mediterranean to Italy is what in Gambia is called “The Back Way”. The aim of this study is to examine the ambitions and reasons behind a migratory project from The Gambia to Europe. By identifying the key constituents of a migration culture, I can get a broader insight into why the celebration of migration is evident, and how the ‘story of Europe’ is shaped. I have interviewed Gambians who are geographically in different places and who all find themselves in different life trajectories, most of them connected to migration. My conversations about migration, “The Back Way” and Europe stretches from interviews with repatriates, aspiring migrants and non-migrants. I have also interviewed Gambians in the Diaspora. In this study, I found a strong societal expectation and hope towards both migration and the diaspora which in return caused certain diasporic behavior that painted a misleading picture of Europe. I also found a strong hope and resilient aspirations in terms of social status and recognition believed to be attained easier as a migrant coming back from Europe.

Využití vokalických formantů pro rozpoznání mluvčího v přirozených forenzních nahrávkách / Using vowel formants for speaker identification in natural forensic recordings

Nechanský, Tomáš January 2017 (has links)
Voice comparison is one of the most frequently addressed terms in the context of forensic phonetics; however, so far experts have not been able to find a speech parameter which reliably discriminates between two speakers. Formant dynamics have brought promising results in this respect, therefore in our study using linear discriminant analysis (LDA) we tested the speaker-discriminatory potential of formant trajectories on real forensic recordings. The aim was firstly, to compare the results of LDA when formant frequencies or coefficients of quadratic and cubic fit are used as predictors and secondly, to compare the results when the analyzed classes are balanced or not regarding the number of objects. As for the predictors, all of the types demonstrated comparable classification rates, nevertheless, as LDA limits the number of predictors in relation to the class size, the quadratic fit appears to be the most efficient. Even though LDA was able to discriminate between different voices above chance, it cannot be recommended for forensic use. It delivered highly inconsistent results when the number of objects in the classes was changed; and more importantly, it significantly discriminates between objects of the same speaker. Key words: formant trajectories, voice comparison, LDA, Czech, forensic phonetics

Universal prevention of anxiety and depression in school children

Åhlén, Johan January 2017 (has links)
Anxiety and depression are common in children and adolescents, and involve individual suffering, risk of future psychiatric problems, and high costs to society. However, only a limited number of children experiencing debilitating anxiety and depression are identified and receive professional help. One approach that could possibly reduce the prevalence of these conditions is universal school-based prevention aimed at reducing the impact of risk factors and strengthening protective factors involved in the development of anxiety and depression. The current thesis aimed to contribute to the literature on universal prevention of anxiety and depression in children. Study I involved a meta-analysis of earlier randomized, and cluster-randomized trials of universal prevention of anxiety and depression. Overall, the meta-analysis showed small but significant effects of universal preventive interventions, meaning that lower levels of anxiety and depression were evident after intervention completion and partially evident at follow-up assessments. No variables were found to significantly enhance the effects, however, there was a tendency for larger effects to be associated with mental health professionals delivering the interventions. In Study II, a widely adopted prevention program called Friends for Life was evaluated in a large school-based cluster-randomized effectiveness trial. The results showed no evidence of an intervention effect for the whole sample. However, children with elevated depressive symptoms at baseline and children with teachers who highly participated in supervision, seemed to benefit from the intervention in the short term. Study III involved a 3-year follow-up of Study II and an examination of the effects of sample attrition. The results showed no long-term effects for the whole sample and no maintenance of the short-term subgroup effects observed in Study II. Finally, to increase our understanding of the development of anxiety in children and to assist future improvements of universal prevention, Study IV evaluated different trajectories of overall anxiety together with related patterns of disorder-specific symptoms in a school-based sample over 39 months. Evidence favored a model of three different developmental trajectories across age. One trajectory was characterized by increasing levels of overall anxiety, but fluctuating disorder-specific symptoms arguably related to the normal challenges of children’s developmental level, which warrants an increased focus on age-relevant challenges in universal prevention. The four studies provide further understanding of the overall effectiveness of universal prevention of anxiety and depression in children, the short- and long-term effects of universal prevention in a Swedish context, and ideas for further development of preventive interventions.

Understanding Variability in Modern Cross-Border Shopping Occasions

Lever, Michael January 2014 (has links)
Throughout history, consumers have crossed borders for various purposes. The emergence of e-commerce and digital technologies has made it easier than ever for people to shop online with merchants across the world. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the variations of cross-border shopping motivations, the changes that occur due to advancements in various technologies, and the spatial patterns and mapped occasions that appear from each cross-border shopping episode. A qualitative, ethnographic approach has been used, and provides a detailed examination of the contemporary cross-border shopping landscape. Findings assist in developing this framework, after conducting detailed participant observation and interviews. The results indicate a range of variability stemming from generational, social, and personal differences, along with technological drivers of change. Trajectories of cross-border shopping occasions and a network model of modern cross-border shopping occasions are provided and detailed. Implications and future research are also discussed.

The C-Factor : critical competencies and challenges evidenced by CEO women

Smith, Samantha Sandy January 2016 (has links)
This study examined the critical competencies and challenges evidenced by women in senior leadership roles, particularly women occupying chief executive officer (CEO) roles. Their differences from other women in senior leadership is also explored. Prior studies have indicated that there is an under-representation of women in top leadership positions especially at a chief executive level (also known as the C-Suite). In this phenomenological study, I engaged with participants at a subjective level to inquire into and explore their unique feelings and considerations in order to gain a better understanding of and provide an all-inclusive perspective on the critical competencies women in such leadership roles are required to have and the challenges they experience. I explored the narratives of 23 participants who had risen to the highest levels in their career trajectories; of these participants, 14 were women (five of whom were chief executive officers) and nine were men. The information the executive women provided during the interviews was evidence of their success, efficacy and tenacity. The inclusion of male participants in this qualitative study ensured that dense and rich data could be obtained given the fact that most leadership positions in organisations are still occupied by men. My findings confirmed the findings of research scholars that women of today occupying leading positions in organisations still face the challenge of having to cope with hindrances such as stereotyping, cultural perceptions, political barriers, gender bias, work-life balance, remuneration partiality, glass ceilings and inadequate support structures. However, contrary to the existing literature, which focuses on prevailing competencies that are best suited to leadership, my research paid particular attention to competencies exclusive to women in senior leadership positions. My study also explored significant facets of competencies at chief executive level in respect of three dimensions, namely, business capability, relationships and traits. / Dissertation (MCom)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Human Resource Management / MCom / Unrestricted
