To create oneself : Carl Peter Thunberg’s persona constructed by means of his travel account

Nordström Sundborg, Klara January 2018 (has links)
This thesis by the name To create oneself: Carl Peter Thunberg’s persona constructed by means of his travel account draws inspiration from recent studies within the history of science regarding the concept of persona. It seeks to expand the notion of persona to examine how it could be constructed and refined by individuals. In doing so, it offers an alternative approach to persona. Not as intellectual standard types but as a joining together of qualities that through the joining creates unique personae to each individual. Furthermore, the essay looks at change, and how it could function as an aspect of a persona. In order to examine this, I will look at how the persona of Carl Peter Thunberg was constructed in his travel account which was published in four parts and covered his travels in Europe, Africa and Asia in the 1770s. Thunberg was one of Carl von Linné’s students and a natural historian and physician in his own right. His travel account was widely anticipated and offered an opportunity for him to introduce himself to a wider audience. This source is exemplary for this kind of analysis as all four parts of the travel account existed within the same genre and was written for the same public, yet changes occurred in how Thunberg was portrayed. Rather than explaining these changes in how Thunberg was portrayed by changes in his personal circumstances, I will argue that they are best understood by considering the aspect of change as a central strategy in constructing Thunberg’s persona as a evolving scientist and natural historian.

Jean le Long et la traduction du "Liber peregrinationis" de Riccold de Monte di Croce / Jean le Long and the translation of Riccold de Monte di Croce’s Liber peregrinationis / Jean le Long e la traduzione del "Liber Peregrinationis" di Riccoldo da Monte di Croce

Robecchi, Marco 12 May 2018 (has links)
In 1351 Jean le Long d’Ypres, abbot of Saint-Bertin in Saint-Omer, translated six works concerning the East and the knowledge of the Asiatic continent, namely of the Mongol Empire (Hayton, Odorico da Pordenone, Wilhelm von Boldensele, Lettres de Togon Temür, De statu). I studied and published the translation of Riccold de Monte di Croce’s Liber peregrinationis. The Florentine Dominican friar travelled from the Holy Land to Turkey, Armenia and Bagdad (he lived there for ten years) between 1288 and 1300. In the first part, I have studied the Latin text, its manuscript tradition and his reception; I added a study on the two Italian translation made in the 14th century. In the second part, I have studied the French translation. Six manuscript and a 16th century print transmit the six Jean le Long’s translation. The philological study and the manuscript tradition show two ways of circulation: one way concerning the Picard bourgeois, the other one concerning the French aristocrats (Jean the Fearless, Jean duke of Berry, Charles duke of Orleans; one of these manuscripts also contains Jean d’Arras’ Roman de Mélusine). The linguistic analysis, the traductological and the lexicological study (regionalisms, orientalism and rare words) allow me to affirm that Jean le Long has “mis en roman” the six Latin texts, few years before the redaction of Jean de Mandeville’s Livre des merveilles (1356). Finally, I prepared the critical edition of the Latin source and of its French translation, followed by a critical apparatus and a glossary.

Utopia e realidade no exílio: uma análise da produção escrita huguenote no período de \"crise da consciência europeia\" / Utopia and reality in exile: an analysis of Huguenot written production during the \"crisis of the European conscience\"

Rocha, Eduardo dos Santos 04 May 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study is to analyze the Huguenot written production in exile during a period of approximately thirty years (1676-1707), a time marked by the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). Amongst tens of thousands of protestants banned from France because of religious persecution that occurred throughout the reign of Louis XIV, some individuals published, particularly in England and the United Provinces, completely different genres of writings, like travel accounts, pastoral letters, political, theological and philosophical treaties, utopias and colonial projects. The purpose of the dissertation is to examine these writings in detail, identifying proposals and debates on political, social, economic and/or religious order, which undoubtedly reflected the concerns and expectations of the Huguenots in that time, ie, their different reactions under an antagonistic context.
