It corresponds to 5% of cancers in women worldwide. The majority of cases present as initial disease, and surgical treatment is curative. Few treatment options exist for patients with poor prognostic factors and advanced disease, and the process of carcinogenesis in endometrial cancer has not been fully elucidated. Sirtuins are proteins involved in several cellular processes. The family of these proteins is composed of seven sirtuins (SIRT1-SIRT7). They present specific cell locations, acting in a variety of processes, including regulation of gene transcription, genomic stability, metabolic control, cell cycle regulation, and cell survival. Few studies have evaluated the role of sirtuins in endometrial cancer as well as its association with prognostic factors. Objective: to evaluate the expression of SIRT1 and SIRT7 enzymes in histological samples of endometrial carcinoma of patients operated at Hospital S?o Lucas (Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica) between January 2000 and December 2015 and associate the expression of these proteins with the pathological staging and prognostic factors. Materials and Methods: we performed a retrospective study evaluating 66 samples of patients with endometrial cancer from January 2000 to December 2015. The expression of SIRT1 and SIRT7 proteins was identified by the immunohistochemical technique and quantified by the Allred score. The expression of these proteins in cancer samples was correlated with the prognostic factors: age, tumor grade, tumor size, myometrial invasion, lymphovascular invasion and pathological staging. Results: SIRT 1 expression was positive in 40.9% of samples and SIRT7 expression in 24.1% of cases. Expression of these proteins did not present a statistically significant association with any of the adverse prognostic factors in endometrial cancer. Conclusions: endometrial cancer samples were positive for both SIRT1 and SIRT7, but without correlation in the study with prognostic factors. Expression of these proteins in samples of endometrial cancer may represent a possible therapeutic target to be developed in future studies.

These themes have always been discussed by Calvinists on Brazilian soil, and only by the Reformed angle, for the lack of works of Arminius are not known in the theological academies of Brazil. At the beginning of the 21st century, a series of publications about the thinking of Jacob Arminius began, by Brazilian Arminians who struggled and are struggling not to promote meaningless discussions, but to show how Arminius thought and reflected the Sacred Scriptures, producing his messages and his studies to instruct the church where he was pastor in Holland. To the great joy of admirers of the works of Arminius, in 2015, Publishing House Assemblies of God of Brazil (CPAD) published in three volumes the Works of Arminius. This publication served as the basis for the present work, adding other works published by Brazilian and North American Arminian scholars. This work does not deal with all of Arminius's thinking, but it was of personal interest to reflect on Free Will and Predestination. The first chapter deals with the scene of the main controversies and also of the conflicts in the ecclesial reality of the Netherlands from 1609 to 1618. In this scenario were present as main protagonists Calvinists and Arminians. The second chapter deals with the theme of Predestination, not as fatalism, but for adoption and also for the glory of God. Predestination has as its scope the responsibility of the Christian in the Kingdom of God. And finally, the third chapter, which has as its content the meaning of Free Will and its powers to the dimensions of a free and responsible Christendom. It is hoped that all those who are involved in the content of this work will have spirit and action in order to be able to freely reflect on the thought of Jacob Arminius for the existence of a good social and ecclesial reality.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the chromatin structure proteins named histones have an important role in gene expression. Acetylation, deacetylation and fosforylation of such proteins may result in upregulation or repression of transcription genes. An imbalance of these systems may result in the development of many diseases, including cancer. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) is a member of the family of histone deacetylases NAD ? dependents and is involved in the regulation of transcription and apoptosis activation related to p53 gene. There are several changes in the expression of hormone receptors and p53 in endometrial cancer, but the role of SIRT1 in these tumors is still to be defined. Objective - To identify, quantify and compare SIRT1, p53, estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) expression in normal and neoplastic endometrial tissue. Methods ? Case-control study comparing 96 cases of endometrial cancer and 128 control samples comprised of normal endometrium. All samples were selected from the Pathology Service, Hospital Sao Lucas of PUCRS between January, 2000 and June, 2012. The factors studied in this paper were analyzed in paraffin specimens by immunohistochemistry technique. Results ? Expression of SIRT1 was assessed by the mean percentage of cells with positive nuclear staining was higher in the cancer group as compared to the control group. Expression of ER and PR was higher in the normal endometrium. There is no difference between case and control groups regarding the expression of p53. More aggressive cancers (high grade and stage III-IV) have a reduction on the expression of PR. Conclusion ? The immunohistochemical expression of SIRT1 histone deacetylase was significantly higher in endometrial cancer samples, suggesting a possible new target therapy. / Introdu??o ?

Upward Bound Graduates Transition From High School to College

Parks, LaVasa Tiny'a 01 January 2019 (has links)
Some first-generation and low-income students enrolled in an Upward Bound (UB) program in a university in the southeastern United States are not prepared to transition from high school to college; therefore, they may need additional guidance, support, resources, and tools to help them with the process. For this reason, precollege programs such as the UB program were designed to prepare first-generation, low-income students for transitioning from high school to college. The purpose of this bounded qualitative case study was to describe first-generation, low-income students' perspectives of the UB program. The conceptual framework for this case study was Tinto's student integration model. Purposeful sampling was used to select 7 UB graduates who were enrolled in the program for at least 2 years. Opened-ended interview questions were used to gather data for open coding and axial coding data analysis process. The results of this study were used to develop an UB Report which described UB gradates' perspectives of the program. Included in the report are the findings, which revealed that UB graduates identified benefits (motivation, social exposure, and student experiences) and resources (services and guest speakers) as major components of the program that contributed to their transition from high school to college. Reporting the perspectives of UB graduates will help UB directors and secondary and postsecondary administrators better understand how the UB program positively affects first-generation, low-income students' successful transition from high school to college.

Assessing the Efficacy of the Talent Search Program

Sales, Martha Jane 01 August 2008 (has links)
The current study assessed the efficacy of one TRIO program, Talent Search. This study compared the postsecondary enrollment of Talent Search participants and non participants. The comparison was conducted on a sample of 284 low-income college ready seniors from three south central Kentucky high schools. Results indicated that low-income students participating in the Talent Search program did enroll at a significantly higher rate than non-participants. This study also examined if the length of time students participated in the Talent Search program was significantly related to postsecondary enrollment. Results indicated no significant correlations. Additionally, this study examined if a relationship in postsecondary enrollment among Talent Search participants as related to their classification by Talent Search eligibility criteria of (a) low income only, (b) first generation only, and (c) both low-income and first generation exist. Results indicated no significant correlations. The findings in this study will help provide support of the effectiveness of TRIO, particularly Talent Search.

Ravel in a new key : harmony in the chamber works, 1914-1927

Beavers, Jennifer Putt 27 January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the first movements of three chamber works -- the Piano trio (1914), the Duo for violin and cello (1920-22), and the Sonata for violin and piano (1923-27) -- and situates their harmonic procedures in relation to important developments within Parisian musical culture. Chapter 1 explores Ravel's early harmonic style, in particular, how he blends nontonal harmonic procedures and tonality within the framework of the sonata as seen in the first movements of his String quartet and Sonatine. Chapter 2 analyzes the Piano trio, which culminates the early phase of Ravel's career with a sophisticated amalgamation of pre-war musical trends, such as extended harmonies and formal inventiveness, with an early wartime emphasis on reduced textures and melodic primacy. In the post-war years, Ravel was forced to adjust to a new role, in which he was no longer at the forefront of musical developments, but rather the follower of a group of young, avant-garde composers. His two post-war compositions, the Duo for violin and cello and the Violin sonata, articulate the struggles he faced with composition in the 1920s. Criticized for having an out-moded aesthetic, he modified his compositional style by incorporating and adapting new harmonic techniques. Drawing on Peter Kaminsky's theory of monotonality and dual pitch organization, chapter 3 examines Ravel's harmonic language in the Duo through linear analysis. Ravel's attempt to incorporate contemporary harmonic procedures however was not sufficient to compete with the more progressive works of Les Six or Stravinsky's burgeoning neoclassicism. As a result, Ravel re-evaluated his craft by rethinking his engagements with the musical avant-garde. The analysis of the Violin sonata in chapter 4 reveals that harmonically, deeper levels of dissonance require pitch prioritization intimately bound to formal function. Unlike the Duo, Ravel presents a more innovative formal design in the Violin sonata, where boundaries are blurred and formal functions are juxtaposed. Chapter 5 concludes with a comparative analysis of the first movements of Ravel's Piano trio, Duo and Violin sonata and their evolving harmonic practices. / text

The Effectiveness of Select Upward Bound Programs in Meeting the Needs of 21st Century Learners in Preparation for College Readiness

Thomas, Kaemanje S 19 May 2014 (has links)
This mixed-methods study examined the effectiveness of the Upward Bound TRIO program in preparing a low-income and first-generation population for the successful completion of high school and acceptance into postsecondary institutions of higher learning. Data collection methods for this study were comprised of teacher and student surveys and program director interviews. A comparison of two Upward Bound programs was conducted in the southern regions of Virginia and Georgia. The results were analyzed and queried as to whether the current program objectives were effective in meeting the needs of low-income, first-generation students and whether the program provided the necessary academic and technological skillsets and support needed to gain employment in knowledge capital economy. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in institutions of higher learning. The significance of this study is that it offers insight on the necessary support structures needed to assist low-income and first-generation students. The study was an in depth analysis of the Upward Bound TRIO program’s current objectives in meeting the needs of the 21st century learner. Information gathered from the literary sources as well as other sources provides additional insight for the researcher on program practice, evaluation, efficiency, and low-income first-generation students’ success.

Rust

Rust, Henning Jacobus January 2011 (has links)
Studies concerning the development of the piano trio primarily cultivate analyses of the musical structures found in this genre. Few of these studies deal in depth with the socio-historical aspect of the development of the piano trio. Such a neglected process can only lead to the loss of valuable information. It is important to pay careful attention to our ever-changing environment and how this phenomenon impacts upon music. The study of the development of the early piano trio (because of the social nature of chamber music) requires greater attention to the social history associated with this genre. This development can be traced as an integral part of the Germanic culture, more specifically that of eighteenth century Germany and Austria. Both societies' love for the piano led to the full blossoming of the piano trio. The question arises: to which degree did the early development of the piano and the changing society- as it mostly appeared during the eighteenth century in Germany and Austria- have an impact on the development of the early piano trio? This hypothesis holds that the development of the early piano trio depended (among other aspects) on the early development of the piano and the changing society of eighteenth century Germany and Austria. Thus, a mutual connection exists between all three factors. / Thesis (M.Mus.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011
