Starting with an analysis of sites – a government one and another oriented to the public with visual impairment – taken as parameters studies of Brazilian legislation on web accessibility and the Principles of Universal Design, it appears that existing solutions, when assimilated in the projects, still incur in discriminatory and inefficient solutions. Starting with the proposal that the very technological advances and the formation of a cyberculture based on post-massive media follows personalizable and customizable solutions, it is proposed a customizable system design for educational e-books user oriented on Universal Design perspectives that are characterized as a totally inclusive design. / Mesmo com o avanço exponencial das tecnologias de informação e comunicação, seu alcance ainda encontra obstáculos quando os destinatários são usuários com algum tipo de deficiência, seja física, intelectual, visual ou auditiva. A partir de uma análise de sites — um governamental e outro orientado para o público com deficiência visual —, tomando-se por parâmetros estudos da legislação brasileira sobre acessibilidade na web e os Princípios do Design Universal, verifica-se que as soluções existentes, quando assimiladas nos projetos, ainda incorrem em caminhos discriminatórios e pouco eficientes. A partir da proposta de que os próprios avanços tecnológicos e a formação de uma cultura cibernética com base nas mídias pós-massivas resultam em soluções personalizáveis e customizáveis, propõe-se o projeto de um sistema customizável para e-books educacionais orientado a usuários nas perspectivas do Design Universal que se caracterize como um projeto amplamente inclusivo.

Cozinha funcional: análise do espaço e do usuário idoso / Functional kitchen: analyses of the elderly person in the place

Trata da ergonomia aplicada aos espaços da habitação, com foco na cozinha e no usuário idoso. A escolha da cozinha como ambiente a ser estudado se deu ao fato, dos desafios ergonômicos encontrados nesse espaço: diversidade de atividades, diversidade de usuários, manipulação de equipamentos, circulação de pessoas entre outras. A pesquisa traz um pouco do histórico da evolução desse espaço destinado, prioritariamente, ao cozinhar e como esse espaço foi se modificando ao longo do tempo. Identifica a cozinha como um local da casa onde todos os moradores, sejam crianças, adultos, homens e mulheres fazem uso de alguma forma. Em um segundo momento, a pesquisa traz conceitos de design, que defendem a adequação do espaço construído ao uso eqüitativo de todos os usuários e a preocupação em se projetar com o foco no usuário. Busca-se conhecer as implicações das atividades humanas perante as soluções espaciais adotadas nos projetos de habitações. O idoso foi escolhido como personagem de estudo, por apresentar as dificuldades comuns a todos os usuários da cozinha, entretanto potencializadas e pela defesa de que um lar adaptado lhe trará uma maior autonomia e conseqüente melhoria na qualidade de vida. Por fim, o trabalho apresenta recomendações para o projeto de uma cozinha segura e adequada a todos os usuários. Pretende-se que os dados apresentados possam ser aplicados na prática projetual e que provoquem uma reflexão que traga melhorias na adequação de moradias. / With the ergonomic functions applied to the dwelling spaces focusing on kitchen used by elderly people. The choice of the kitchen as subject of studies results from the existing ergonomic difficulties found in this environment such as: diversity of users and functions, handling of several equipments, peoples circulation, among others. This reserch brings up a bit of the evolutions history of this space meant mainly to cook and how it has been changed througt the centuries. It also point out this space as a place that every resident, somehow, sometime, use no matter of age or sex. After that, the research focus on design concepts that justifies the utility adaptations in the kitchen to the safe use of all residents, and better knowledge of human activities related to the adopted spacial solutions in the housing planning. The elderly people were chosen as study subject for all difficulties they have, as every kitchen user, encreased by the lost of mobility. One adapted home will give them independence and a better quality of life. Finally, this study present suggestions for a kitchen project that is safe and suitable for all users. All collected items shown here is intended to be used while projecting and to bring up deeper thoughts on better and safer dwellings.

Esta questão envolve atributos de qualidade funcional e facilidade de uso, aliados ao desenho universal entendido como valor de utilidade, eficiência e conforto do espaço construído amplamente utilizável. Esta pesquisa coloca-se na interface entre componentes da acessibilidade espacial e avaliação heurística, como método de inspeção sistemático de usabilidade. O objetivo geral é analisar o potencial de aplicação de uma avaliação heurística modificada como método de inspeção de usabilidade universal, aliada ao percurso pluralístico. A partir do assunto proposto e do contexto no qual se insere, optou-se por realizar um estudo de caso com avaliação através do método baseado em heurísticas modificado em conformação aos princípios do Desenho Universal, em Centro Comercial Planejado, caso selecionado devido à complexidade espacial e escala. A avaliação é composta por três sessões consecutivas: na sessão I, pré-entrevista, cinco avaliadores especialistas interdisciplinares na área de arquitetura e construção foram convidados a responder um formulário, entrevista estruturada, através da análise dos projetos arquitetônicos do centro comercial planejado (plantas, cortes e elevações) em relação aos princípios do desenho universal e acessibilidade espacial; em seguida, na sessão II, atividades em cenários, foi solicitado a cada avaliador responder novamente o formulário durante a realização de atividades pré-definidas; na sessão final, sessão III, pós-entrevista, foram respondidos novamente os formulários em uma reanálise dos projetos arquitetônicos. Procurando a utilização de diferentes tipos de habilidades e experiências, a pesquisa utilizou da associação entre a avaliação heurística modificada ao método de inspeção ou percurso pluralístico, colocando o usuário consumidor na execução de cenários pré-definidos. Os resultados demonstraram que a avaliação heurística modificada pode integrar com eficácia a avaliação de projeto antes do fato e na avaliação pós-ocupação, propiciando interação entre análise de projeto arquitetônico e uso do espaço e instalações. O percurso pluralístico permitiu a avaliação de satisfação e preferências do usuário. Através de um processo de avaliação de uma comissão de avaliadores interdisciplinares, processo iterativo combinado com sessões, é possível assegurar uma taxa de erro reduzida para o uso universal de ambientes construídos. A despeito da extensa literatura sobre engenharia da usabilidade, há pouca pesquisa sobre métodos para aplicação de testes de usabilidade em um contexto do projeto arquitetônico. Desse modo, destaca-se a necessidade de estudos mais aprofundados sobre usabilidade universal e sua utilização na concepção de ambientes inclusivos. Esta pesquisa apresentou-se como um passo inicial para a avaliação de usabilidade universal na arquitetura e recomenda testes aplicados ao contexto arquitetônico, pois estes ressaltam a importância de análise de elementos interdependentes no ambiente construído e devem ser implementados ao processo de projeto universal / Abstract: How to use a building in an efficient, effective and satisfactory way? This issue involves functional quality and ease of use attributes, allied to universal design understood as a value of utility, efficiency and convenience of the widely usable constructed space. This research stands itself in the interface between components of spatial accessibility and heuristic evaluation, as a method for systematic usability inspection. The main goal is to analyze the application potential for a heuristic evaluation modified as a universal usability inspection method allied to the pluralistic method of inspection. From the proposed subject and the context in which it is in, it was decided to conduct a study case with the method evaluation based on heuristics modifying in conformation to the Universal Design principles, in Planed Commercial Center, the case was chosen due to spatial and scale complexities. The evaluation is composed of three consecutive sessions. In session I, pre-interview, five expert interdisciplinary evaluators in the area of architecture and construction were invited to answer a form, structured interview, through the analysis of planed commercial center¿s architectonic projects (plans, sections and elevations) concerning of the universal design principles and spatial accessibility; next, in session II , activities in settings, each expert was asked to perform a set of pre-defined activities in settings; post-interview, the forms were answered again in a reanalysis for the architectonic projects. Using different types of abilities and experiences, the research will associate modified heuristic evaluation with the pluralistic method of inspection, placing the user consumer in the pre-defined settings execution. The results showed that the modified heuristic evaluation could instate effectively the project evaluation before the fact and in the post-occupation evaluation, providing interaction between the architectonic project analysis and the space and installations use. The pluralistic method of inspection allowed the user¿s satisfaction and preferences evaluation. Through an interdisciplinary evaluator¿s committee evaluation progress, interactive process combined with sessions, it is possible to assure a reduced error rate to the constructed environments universal use. In spite of extensive literature about usability engineering, there has been little research on the methods to conduct usability tests in a context of architectural design. Therefore, further studies on universal usability and its use in inclusive environment are of paramount importance. Rebranding the silver market - The alteration of Huis Davidtsz from institution to place of living

Places designed for the elderly tend be stigmatising, which is predicated in its medical engineering background. The institutional nature of these places accelerates decline as it negatively impacts on the health of its residents, physically and psychologically disabling them. Spaces that support the wellbeing of residents can be identified by the presence of three characteristics: a sense of control over ones environment, a sense of access to social support and access to positive distraction. Huis Davidtsz is a frail care facility, located just west of Pretoria’s central business district, which has housed elderly people since 1968. The interior environment of Huis Davidtsz is dull and disabling and for this reason is selected as site for design intervention. In order to re-design Huis Davidtsz into a psychologically supportive environment the aforementioned characteristics of supportive space are translated into architectural design. Four elements of architectural space: floor, wall, ceiling and window, are manipulated to create an intimacy gradient. This gradient humanises the institution by establishing a range of spaces and a sense of territoriality. The unforgiving threshold between intimate and public space is moderated by subtle spatial indications of levels of intimacy. This provides Huis Davidtsz with the seven levels of intimacy associated with domestic spaces, enabling individuality and choice. Developing accessible museum curriculum: the research, development and validation of a handbook for museum professionals and educators

Bailey / The purpose of this study was to create a handbook for school and museum educators to support their development of curriculum materials that provide meaningful access to diverse learners. The handbook was developed using the research and development methodology (R&D) developed by Borg and Gall (1989). The steps in the R&D cycle used in this study included: (1) Research analysis and proof of concept; a proof of concept consisted of interviews with three national experts in the areas of accessibility, education, and museum education to determine the need for the resource. (2) Product planning and design; information was gathered through a literature review, curriculum materials derived from a collaborative partnership between Kansas State University and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum were used as examples. (3) Product development; a prototype of the handbook was created. (4) Preliminary field test; the handbook was evaluated by five national leaders in the fields of education, accessibility, and museum education. (5) Product revision; revisions were made based on feedback from the preliminary field test. (6) Main field test; seven potential users from the areas of education and museum education reviewed the handbook. (7) Operational product revision; feedback from the main field test was used for final revisions. Conclusions: 1. There was a need for a resource to assist professionals in the design of curriculum materials that were accessible to diverse learners in both the school and museum setting. 2. The handbook was useful to both intended audiences. Museum educators found the handbook expanded their thinking to include cognitive accessibility. School educators reported the handbook increased their skills in designing learning activities for diverse learners. 3. The handbook provided specific instructions in the applications of differentiated instruction and universal design to curriculum developed for museums. 4. Physical accessibility was accepted as an important concern for museum educators. This awareness provided a useful bridge to cognitive accessibility. 5. Cognitive accessibility was accepted as an important concern for school educators. The handbook increased their skills in reaching diverse learners. 6. Both museum and school educators appreciated the technology resources that prompted reviewers’ expanded thinking.

Exploring a capability-demand interaction model for inclusive design evaluation

Designers are required to evaluate their designs against the needs and capabilities of their target user groups in order to achieve successful, inclusive products. This dissertation presents exploratory research into the specific problem of supporting analytical design evaluation for Inclusive Design. The analytical evaluation process involves evaluating products with user data rather than testing with actual users. The work focuses on the exploration of a capability-demand model of product interaction as the basis for analytical inclusive evaluation. This model suggests that by comparing the measured sensory, cognitive and motor capabilities of a user population to the corresponding product demands, the degree of fit between users and products can be assessed. The research problem was addressed by firstly examining theories of human function and performance together with existing sources of user capability data. It was found that user capability data was fragmented and lacking in terms of predicting design exclusion and difficulty at the population level. More fundamentally, however, it was found that the relationships between measured capability in populations with low functional capacity and real world task performance with products (such as errors, times and difficulty) were not well understood. Given that an understanding of these relationships are necessary to guide capability data collection and to drive valid and robust analytical evaluation methods, the research effort focused on exploring these relationships via empirical and analytical studies. The research process culminated in an experimental study with nineteen users of various functional capability profiles performing tasks with four consumer products (a clock radio, a mobile phone, a blender and a vacuum cleaner). Measures of user capability were related to corresponding product demands (on those capabilities) and task outcome measures. A complex picture emerged, where linear relationships did not generally account for significant variance in task outcome measures. Further, it appeared that multiple capabilities were possibly interacting in unknown ways to support real world interaction. These indicative results point to the further investigation of multivariate and non-linear models for describing capability-demand relationships, and also the replication of similar studies with larger sample sizes to confirm the relationships observed. The resulting overall recommendation, therefore, is that there is a need to direct research efforts in this critical but largely unexplored area of capability-demand model building for Inclusive Design evaluation.

Esta dissertação aborda a acessibilidade e visa realizar um estudo de caso através de uma avaliação na edificação da Reitoria, no centro do campus da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora, utilizando o método “Graduação da Acessibilidade” desenvolvido por Marcelo Pinto Guimarães. Os objetivos específicos são identificar os pontos com melhor e pior acessibilidade; além de propor modificações nos espaços avaliados, de forma a alcançarem um maior acesso-grau e melhorarem a avaliação final. A revisão bibliográfica aborda a história da pessoa com deficiência e sua relação com a comunidade na qual está inserida e apresenta os conceitos de exclusão, segregação, integração e inclusão conforme o entendimento de Romeu Kazumi Sassaki. É apresentado o contexto atual da acessibilidade na União Européia, nos Estados Unidos e no Brasil. Em seguida, é estudado o Desenho Universal e seus sete princípios. A metodologia apresenta o método de avaliação “The Enabler”, desenvolvido por Steinfeld et al, que deu origem ao método de avaliação “Graduação da Acessibilidade”, além de introduzir a Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora para contextualização do local do estudo. A análise da acessibilidade foi composta por dois pavimentos do prédio da Reitoria, além do estacionamento e dos acessos do anel viário. A análise foi realizada através de visitas da pesquisadora ao local e consiste em descrição da situação encontrada, registro fotográfico e compilação dos dados em gráficos. Nas considerações finais são apresentados a análise final, com os acessos-grau mais presentes na avaliação geral e nas parciais, seus desdobramentos, os pontos fortes e fracos do método utilizado, bem como as dificuldades encontradas. As propostas de melhoria são apresentadas em forma de um quadro com a descrição dos problemas encontrados, os itens da NBR 9050/04 da ABNT que tratam do assunto, as melhorias propostas e os benefícios esperados. / Persons with disabilities were discriminated against since ancient times. Despite this situation has changed considerably in recent centuries, especially in recent decades, it is still possible to perceive the existence of physical and behavioral barriers in their life in society. This dissertation deals with accessibility and aims to conduct a case study by assessing the building of the Rectory , in the center of the campus of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, using the method "Graduation of Accessibility" developed by Marcelo Pinto Guimarães. The specific objectives are to identify the best and worst accessibility points; as well as to propose changes in the evaluated areas in order to achieve greater access-grade and improve the final evaluation. The literature review covers the history of the person with disabilities and their relationship with the community in which it operates; and presents the concepts of exclusion, segregation, integration and inclusion as understands Romeu Kazumi Sassaki. Is presented the current context of accessibility in the European Union, the United States and Brazil. Then Universal Design is studied, as well as its seven principles. The methodology presents the evaluation method "The Enabler", developed by Steinfeld et al, which led to the evaluation method "Graduation of Accessibility" and introduces the Federal University of Juiz de Fora to contextualize the study site. The accessibility analysis consisted of two floors of the building of the Rectory, in addition to parking lot and the ring road access. The analysis was conducted by a researcher at site visits and consists of description of the situation found, photographic records and compiling the data in graphs. In the final considerations are presented the final analysis, with the access-grade more present at the general and partial assessments, its unfoldings, the strengths and weaknesses of the method used and the difficulties found. The improvement proposals are presented in the form of a table with an overview of the problems encountered, the items of NBR 9050/04 ABNT dealing with the matter, the proposed improvements and the expected benefits.

Produktionsprozesse für Lehrwerke im Universellen Design: unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Anforderungenblinder und sehbehinderter Kinder im Inklusionsunterricht

Deutschland hat sich mit der Ratifizierung der Konvention über die Rechte von Menschen mit Behinderungen u. a. verpflichtet, ein inklusives Bildungssystem zu etablieren. Darunter zählt auch, die dafür erforderlichen Unterrichtsmaterialien bereitzustellen. Schulbuchverlage bieten deshalb seit einigen Jahren Inklusionsmaterialien an, die vor allem für Kinder mit erhöhtem Förderbedarf im Bereich Lernen oder der sprachlichen Entwicklung konzipiert sind. Allerdings sind solche Lernmittel für blinde oder sehbehinderte Kinder oft nicht zugänglich. Für eine barrierefreie Gestaltung fehlen Alternativen, Informationen auditiv oder taktil wahrzunehmen. Solche Lernmittel stellen bisher nur wenige spezielle Medienzentren her. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht, wie Lerninhalte derzeit barrierefrei produziert werden und welche Möglichkeiten sich für Schulbuchverlage durch die Anwendung neuer Technologien ergeben. Das Universelle Design – ein Gestaltungsansatz für Produkte und Anwendungen, die für eine größtmögliche Nutzergruppe zugänglich sind – bietet dabei die theoretische Basis, entsprechende (sonder-)pädagogische und herstellungstechnische Ansätze zu entwickeln. Auf der Grundlage einer Bedarfsanalyse, die durch Befragungen von Schulbuchverlagen, Lehrkräften und Medienzentren gestützt wird, werden Wege der Zusammenarbeit von Medienzentren und Schulbuchverlagen erschlossen. Daraus werden Prozessmodelle und -beschreibungen entwickelt, um die Reorganisationsmaßnahmen zu verdeutlichen, wie Schulbücher zukünftig barrierefreier produziert werden können. Eine abschließende Evaluation der Lösungsansätze mit Verlagsexperten und Mitarbeitern aus Medienzentren verdeutlicht die Synergiepotenziale, die aus technischer Perspektive vor allem im elektronischen Publizieren liegen. Durch eine Produktionsweise mit medienneutralen Daten in Schulbuchverlagen und Medienzentren können mehrere Anforderungen erfüllt werden, die den barrierefreien Zugang zu Lerninhalten verbessern. Die technischen Optimierungen allein lösen jedoch nicht alle Probleme. Auch die konzeptionelle Phase der Schulbuchentwicklung muss maßgeblich durch (sonder-) pädagogisches Wissen ergänzt werden, um ein sinnvolles didaktisches Konzept auch für blinde und sehbehinderte Kinder anbieten zu können. Educators' Perceptions of a Successful English Language Learner Program

Across the nation, many school districts are challenged to improve the academic achievement of English language learners (ELLs). In a small district in Ohio approximately 86% of the ELLs passed the state Annual Measurable Objectives in reading and mathematics, however, 14% of ELL students are not meeting targeted objectives. The purpose of this study was to examine the pedagogical success of an ELL instructional program through the perspectives of the teachers, principals, and administrators in the local district. Using Rose's and Meyer's theory of the universal design for learning and the state's scaffolding framework of assessment, placement and intervention, this case study investigated the factors of effectiveness that participants felt best explained the success of the ELL program. The purposeful sample comprised 4 teachers, 2 principals, and 2 central office administrators. The research included data collected using 8 individual interviews, 1 group interview, 3 classroom observations, and document reviews. Data were coded and analyzed to reveal common themes and perceptions. Findings revealed that participants believed their efforts to develop relevant course content motivated the students to learn a new language, the application of the principles of the universal design for learning improved teachers' pedagogical practices, and the participants placed a priority on creating positive student and family relationships to encourage language learning. The findings can promote positive social change by advancing teachers' capacity to apply supportive practices and educators' efforts to improve the academic achievement of ELLs by implementing effective programs that motivate students to acquire adequate language skills.

Accessibility and Usability in the City of Malmö : Assessing the Implementation of Universal Design on Pedestrian Walkways for the Blind and Visually Impaired

This paper presents a case study conducted in Malmö, Sweden, with the aim of examining and improving the accessibility and usability of pedestrian walkways for blind and visually impaired people (BVIP). The study focuses on identifying the obstacles faced by BVIPs in using pedestrian walkways in Malmö and proposes strategies to enhance their accessibility. A mixed methods approach, including observations, walk-along interviews, and photography, was employed to collect data. The study observed several pedestrian walkways in Malmö and interviewed four informants to gain a diversity of perspectives. The findings identified five types of obstacles faced by BVIPs: barriers issues, building issues, Tactile Walking Surface Indicator (TWSI) issues, aids issues, and natural issues. Consistency in the guidance line with contrasting brightness and tactile features was found to be a crucial requirement for BVIPs. The study also explores the factors that impact the implementation of universal design (UD) principles on pedestrian walkways, including old buildings, city decision-makers, street designers, and a lack of a feedback system. To improve accessibility and usability, the study proposes five key principles: maintaining consistent lead lines, maximizing the effectiveness of TWSIs, separating areas with different functions, designing streets based on user needs and daily habits, and promoting UD for all as a long-term strategy. In conclusion, this study identifies obstacles faced by BVIPs on pedestrian walkways in Malmö and proposes strategies to enhance their accessibility and usability. It argues that implementing these strategies can implement UD principles and create more accessible and usable pedestrian walkways for BVIPs and contribute to inclusivity
