Betydelsen av uppåtgående klassresor : en litteraturstudie / The significance of upward social class mobility : a literature studyRautio, Sanna, Hermansson, Sara January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to research what negative and positive effects upward social class mobility can give a person with focus on the inner emotional world. Through a literature analysis of autobiographies has authors who have undergone social class mobility from working class to middle class been selected. The qualitative research study shows that people can be affected in several ways by experiencing upward social class mobility. Our study finds that people can be negatively affected by their upward mobility and that most of the negative aspects are similar for all the people in our study. We have used a hermeneutic method when interpreting and identifying the negative aspects of social class mobility in our empirical data. We have thematized and analyzed the data with inspiration from Pierre Bourdieu's class theories. In the empirical data, we have identified several common themes of negative aspects that can be experienced with upward social class mobility. Some of the themes are feelings like guilt, shame, feeling like you live between two worlds and not feeling at home. Their relationships with their parents and current family can also be negatively affected. In the empirical data, we can see that all the people included in the study are affected by their previous class affiliation. The changes, new social codes and habitus, that the new class brings influences people from a psychological and social perspective which creates difficulties for them to feel belonging in the new class.

Challenges facing black managers regarding upward mobility in corporate South AfricaMatandela, Wanda 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study identifies the problem of job mobility among black managers in corporate South Africa, which is due to various factors explored in this research. The central theme of this research is to highlight the major challenges faced by black managers in the corporate sector to upward mobility.
An extensive review of the literature, including legislation, textbooks, journal articles, internet and existing case studies has been conducted. A questionnaire survey of black managers who were members of the Black Management Forum was conducted with a view to gaining insight regarding key issues faced by black managers in corporate South Africa. Black managers surveyed came from different sectors of the economy, operating at different levels of management, from junior to top management. The results from the survey were analysed, and showed that black managers do not get proper organizational support, training and development to enable them to perform their duties and reach their maximum potential.
Other issues from the survey findings include racial discrimination, lack of mentorship and support from top management, marginalization, tokenism, lack of career planning. These all present major challenges facing black managers seeking upward mobility in the workplace. Several recommendations are made on how to reduce the negative impact for both organisations and black managers caused by job-hopping resulting from these obstacles faced by black managers in the workplace. These include creating a working environment that is inclusive, where every employee feels recognised and valued for his or her efforts. Furthermore, it is recommended that organizations promote an environment that embraces diversity of cultures, where all employees are treated equally and fairly with due regard to their constitutional rights to equality and dignity. The author also suggests that organizational core values must reject unfair discrimination and promote tolerance of the different cultures and behaviours that exist within the organisation. It is further suggested that for these recommendations to work in practice, transformation must be a primary objective of the organisation. This must be accompanied by a change of mindsets and attitudes, and supported by management.
台灣五大會計師事務所女性審計人員升遷問題之研究 / A Study of Upward Mobility of Female Auditors in Big 5 Public Accounting石倉安, Shi, Tsang-An Unknown Date (has links)

The Role of Transit in the Upward Mobility of Low-Income Indianapolis ResidentsArianna Michaela Rambaram (11546773) 18 October 2021 (has links)

This study examines the extent to which transit may be able
to assist with the upward mobility of low-income groups, specifically those
making less than a living wage. Previous studies relating to job accessibility
have examined the feasibility of reaching jobs using various modes of
transportation, and some have factored educational requirements into the
attainability of those jobs. However, no studies thus far have attempted to
determine transit accessibility to jobs that can facilitate and enable upward
mobility for low-income households. Employment data relevant to the labor force
of Marion County, Indiana, is used to determine the earnings (mainly wages or
salaries) associated with occupations, and which occupations require no more
than a high school education. Those occupations are then paired with the
various industries they are found in, and the earnings belonging to the
industry’s highest-earning occupation is associated with that industry. The
median household incomes of low-income Census block groups (CBGs) are then
compared to the earnings of each transit-accessible industry to evaluate
whether those earnings are large enough to induce upward mobility for those
living in the CBGs. Bus routes and bus stops for the local transit system
(IndyGo) along with workplace locations are mapped in ArcGIS to assess the
low-income population’s accessibility to workplaces belonging to a select group
of industries.

Bus routes that serve both downtown Indianapolis and
low-income CBGs were found to provide people living in those CBGs with access
to some of the most lucrative jobs, particularly those found in the Finance and
Insurance industries. Over half of Indianapolis’ transit-accessible industries
have earnings amounts large enough to induce upward mobility for those living
in all the low-income CBGs; this corresponds to 6,748 unique workplaces.
Findings from this study suggest that low-income people would benefit from
having access to transit routes that serve downtowns and other areas with high
concentrations of white-collar jobs. Low-income Indianapolis residents informed
of this study’s results may be motivated to explore the possibilities for
better-paying jobs accessible to them by transit. Furthermore, methods used in
this study can help in ranking different transit routes for accessibility to
workplaces conducive to upward mobility. The rankings can be updated
periodically to assist in addressing equity goals for transit planning.

Immigration, Literacy, and Mobility: A Critical Ethnographic Study of Well-educated Chinese Immigrants’ Trajectories in CanadaWang, Lurong 13 June 2011 (has links)
This dissertation interrogates the deficit assumptions about English proficiency of skilled immigrants who were recruited by Canadian governments between the late 1990s and early 2000s. Through the lens of literacy as social practice, the eighteen-month ethnographic qualitative research explores the sequential experiences of settlement and economic integration of seven well-educated Chinese immigrant professionals. The analytical framework is built on sociocultural approaches to literacy and learning, as well as the theories of discourses and language reproduction. Using multiple data sources (observations, conversational interviews, journal and diary entries, photographs, documents, and artifacts collected in everyday lives), I document many different ways that well-educated Chinese immigrants take advantage of their language and literacy skills in English across several social domains of home, school, job market, and workplace.
Examining the trans-contextual patterning of the participants’ language and literacy activities reveals that immigrant professionals use literacy as assistance in seeking, negotiating, and taking hold of resources and opportunities within certain social settings. However, my data show that their language and literacy engagements might not always generate positive consequences for social networks, job opportunities, and upward economic mobility. Close analyses of processes and outcomes of the participants’ engagements across these discursive discourses make it very clear that the monolithic assumptions of the dominant language shape and reinforce structural barriers by constraining their social participation, decision making, and learning practice, and thereby make literacy’s consequences unpredictable. The deficit model of language proficiency serves the grounds for linguistic stereotypes and economic marginalization, which produces profoundly consequential effects on immigrants’ pathways as they strive for having access to resources and opportunities in the new society.
My analyses illuminate the ways that language and literacy create the complex web of discursive spaces wherein institutional agendas and personal desires are intertwined and collide in complex ways that constitute conditions and processes of social and economic mobility of immigrant populations. Based on these analyses, I argue that immigrants’ successful integration into a host country is not about the mastery of the technical skills in the dominant language. Rather, it is largely about the recognition and acceptance of the value of their language use and literacy practice as they attempt to partake in the globalized new economy.
