Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation of MTA Pulpotomies: A Retrospective Study

Colorado, Claudia 28 April 2014 (has links)
Vital pulp therapy is the group of procedures indicated to maintain pulp vitality allowing for continued root development and apical closure in the presence of pulp exposure due to caries or trauma. Complete maturation results in stronger tooth structure that is more able to withstand occlusal forces. Historically, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) was the material of choice for a vital pulpotomy. Recently mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been used as a pulp sealing material because of its biocompatibility and its ability to induce hard tissue barrier formation. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of vital pulp therapy procedures performed with MTA. All patients receiving MTA pulpotomies and MTA pulp caps at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry Graduate Endodontic Practice between November 30, 2009 and August 15, 2013 were recalled and evaluated for presence or absence of clinical symptoms, pulp vitality, radiographic evaluation of continued root development, dentin bridge formation or pulp canal obliteration. Results were analyzed descriptively. At time of treatment caries was found to be the most common etiologic factor. Fifty-seven percent of cases were symptomatic at time of treatment (43% asymptomatic). Forty-seven percent of the teeth presented with immature apices (53% with radiographically closed apices). Overall recall rate was 50%. At recall all teeth were clinically asymptomatic. Forty seven percent of teeth tested normally to cold (33% were non-responsive to cold) at recall. Pulp canal obliteration was seen in 6 cases, 4 molars and 2 anterior teeth. In conclusion, MTA pulpotomy and MTA direct pulp caps are a predictable treatment modality for young vital permanent teeth affected by caries or trauma.

Middling transnationalism and translocal lives : young Germans in the UK

Mueller, Dorothea Sophia January 2013 (has links)
The thesis examines the migration decision-making and everyday experiences of young highly skilled professional migrants through the case study of German migration to the UK. It develops a framework combining the twin notions of transnational urbanism and translocal subjectivities, allowing a strong focus on migrants' subjective experiences, perceptions and emotionalities of mobility, while acknowledging the centrality of spaces and places for them. The geographical setting of the case study further serves to accentuate the relatively small-scale disruption occurring during the migration process, and the subjectivities connected to this. Data was collected in the UK (mainly London) during thirteen months of fieldwork, using participant observation, in-depth interviews and expert interviews. The research reveals a previously unacknowledged high ambivalence and diversity of this migrant group. Young German highly skilled migrants display various mobility and migration patterns with regard to the translocal connections they maintain, the emotional importance they attach to these connections, and their previous internal and international migration history. Three mobility types emerge from this: 'bi-local', 'multi-local' and 'settled' migrants. The close translocal connections practiced by migrants can lead to conflict, particularly for bi-local migrants, as judging of the migration project can occur by friends and families; meaning the spatial and emotional proximity between the migrants and their social network can be both positive and negative. The expectations towards the UK are also highly complex, and strongly influence micro-scale personal geographies. Lastly, the diversity of migration projects leads to widely varying attitudes towards fellow German migrants, as well as tensions and potentially conflicts within German social spaces. Overall, a strong and pervasive ambivalence about the migration experience emerges, which is experienced differently by the three migrant groups and the geographical proximity between Germany and the UK plays a large role in this. This thesis adds empirical and analytical insight to the academic debate regarding young professional migrants within the EU, and German contemporary migration in particular. Theoretically, it contributes to the discussion around lifestyle migration and middling transnationalism, and it enhances the practical use of the concept 'emotional geographies' for migration studies.

Population aging is now a major impact theme throughout the world. Despite being a natural process, aging causes the individual a series of physiological changes that are beginning to be observed at the end of the third decade of life, leading to repercussions on their health condition. Among other changes, breathing and vocal changes may arise in senescence due to the gradual decrease in lung function as well as changes to the operation of the vocal tract. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between lung function and vocal parameters in the elderly. Were part of the study of elderly women, who were linked to UnATI-UFPE. All participants were assessed for lung function, through respirometry and manometer as well as analysis of vocal characteristics, by measuring Maximum phonation time (MPT) and investigation of vocal symptoms from the Voice Symptoms Scale (VoiSS). Data analysis involved the use of SPSS-19.0 software for identifying descriptive frequencies and percentages of respiratory and vocal parameters, and also the application of correlational tests, which allowed us to analyze the relationship between these parameters. The results showed that lung function, as well as maximum speech time measurements are reduced with aging. There is also an association between the VoiSS and the MPT in older women, suggesting the influence of breathing exercises on phonation. The vocal symptoms were not evident in this population was not found, so the relationship between respiratory measures and vocal symptoms. The absence of vocal symptoms possibly occurred because the participants are engaged in health programs and welfare of UnATI-UFPE.

The growth and distribution of population in British Columbia, 1951-61

Welch, Ruth Lilian January 1964 (has links)
The growth of population was an outstanding feature of the economic and social development of British Columbia, between 1951 and 1961. The effects of this remarkable growth on the distribution of population, among the census subdivisions of the province, is the particular aspect selected for study. Changes in population distribution result from areal inequalities of the rate of population growth and decline. These differences can be analysed in terms of the varying contributions of the natural and migrational components of population change in each part of the province. The "explanation" of redistribution is thus to be found in the factors which influence the action of the components of population change. This apparently straightforward approach to the topic is beset by a number of problems. Some arise from the concepts, methodology and techniques of population studies in general, as they are applied to the data available for the census subdivisions of British Columbia. Changes in the boundaries of the areal units and in the definitions of statistical categories also create difficulties. The demographic basis for the growth of population in the province as a whole is examined in Chapter Three. Several trends produced a greater relative importance of natural increase as a source of population growth, but net migration was still, in the nineteen -fifties, the major component of change. Estimates of the natural and migrational components of population change in each census subdivision, and in certain cities and municipalities are provided. Migration was the primary cause of regional variations in the rate of population change, although natural increase was far from uniform. Several generic types of population change are identified, to demonstrate the demographic processes and causal factors at work. In Chapter Four the growth in each part of the province is set into perspective, by considering the distribution of the total provincial growth of population. In this way, the extent to which each component of change was responsible for the shifts in the distribution of population can be assessed. Migration was more important than natural increase as a mechanism of adjustment between the initial distribution of population and the changes in the factors which shape the distribution pattern. Medeiros, Rodrigo Dantas de January 2020 (has links)
Abstract: The present dissertation has as its general objective the analysis of the intellectual and political trajectory of the Catholic bishop Dom Vital Maria Gonçalves de Oliveira (1844-1878); as well as the Religious Question (1872-1876), and the contributions of such question in the installation of the political-institutional crisis that emerged at the end of the 19th century in Brazil. As a specific objective, the analysis of Dom Vital's participation in the Religious Question, and his performance within the ultramontane current, derived from the intellectual family of conservatism, and which greatly influenced the Brazilian intellectuals of the 19th century, accentuating the litigation with regalism and the Freemasonry. The hypothesis developed was the effective loss of support from the Throne of two of its main supporters: the Church and Freemasonry due to what happened in the Religious Question, contributing to the fall of the monarchical regime and the separation between the Church and the State. The justification of this dissertation is the relevance of the Religious Question in the rise and formation of the Brazilian republican state. The methodology used is that developed by ‘Cambridge linguistic contextualism’, whose main exponents are Quentin Skinner and John G. A. Pocock. Through bibliographic, qualitative, deductive research, using the historical method, we analyzed texts related to the theme, as well as periodicals and documents of the time.
