At Home at the Down Home: Building and Sustaining a Musical Community

Myhre, Rheva 01 August 2022 (has links)
The Down Home is an eclectic music venue in Johnson City, Tennessee. Established in 1976, it has since become a noteworthy club and the center of a mutually supportive community of people who keep the venue going while it in turn holds the community members together. Through the use of community theory, oral history theory, memorabilia, and oral history interviews, this thesis examines the way the Down Home community formed, and how it has continued to grow, develop traditions, and engage people both local and from afar. It also explores what the venue’s future may look like. While several influential figures in the club’s history have passed away, it is important to acknowledge the memories of those still living. This project documents some of the Down Home’s story as told by the venue’s community members, and it begins to fill the void where literature about the Down Home is scarce.

Structure of Sound

Jackson, Asti Joy 29 January 2016 (has links)
This thesis creates a complementarity relationship with the use of timber and concrete as primary structural and accent materials. Key elements of this thesis include (1) The development of a wood latticing system (2) Stairs that posses a strong sculptural language (3) The Lantern, a free standing lobby/box office, clad in wood and glass (4) Circulation towers that accommodate balcony seating. Studies of these elements went through many iterations resulting in over one hundred drawings. Progression of these drawings are directed to the interpretation of building form and the interaction with the site. These concepts are then implemented in the design of a multifaceted music venue located on a hillside in the New River Valley. Minutes from the college town of Blacksburg, Virginia this event complex caters to an array of musical functions. Spaces include The Lantern, which is a multipurpose lobby/lounge, the main auditorium, and an outdoor amphitheater. / Master of Architecture

Venue-based hearing conservation strategies : reducing the risk of music induced hearing loss.

Horrell, Katherine Sally 27 September 2013 (has links)
Background: During live concerts attendees are exposed to excessive high intensity sounds for durations considered dangerous to the auditory system. Thus, regular live music concert attendees are at risk for developing Music Induced Hearing Loss (MIHL) due to their recreational habits. Although MIHL is preventable, current hearing conservation is limited at live music venues. As personal hearing protection is poor within this community, a need for alternative hearing conservation strategies is evident. Method: The objectives of this multi-method quantitative research study was to determine whether venue-based hearing conservation strategies in live music venues are a plausible means of reducing the risk of music induced hearing loss. Four live rock and heavy metal music venues in Johannesburg (South Africa) were included in the study. The current venuebased hearing conservation strategies as well as the acoustic and structural characteristics of these venues are described. In addition, the Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs) were measured throughout the venues. The variance of the mean SPLs between different areas within these venues were then calculated and effects of the structural characteristics on the variance of the sound levels within the venues were determined. Results: The results indicated that hearing conservation including awareness programs and availability of Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) are not currently occurring in the music venues. Music venues further do not comply with the OHSA (2003) regulations nor are they compliant in terms of the acoustic and structural recommendations for reducing the intensity levels in music venues. Statistical analysis indicated at least one pair of significant differences in the mean SPLs recorded in the different areas in each venue. Results further indicated trends in the variance of intensity levels between different areas confirming a positive relationship between each of these five trends and the variance of sound levels. Thus, this study indicates that venue-based hearing conservation strategies may be a plausible means for reducing the risk for MIHL in attendees at live music venues. Implications: Implications of this study are discussed in relation to clinical and practice guidelines for both audiologists, and occupational health personnel, whilst the need for changes in legislation are highlighted.

Att uppleva Washington Capitals : ett framgångsrikt företag inom upplevelseekonomin

Burman, Sophia, Elfsberg, Joa January 2010 (has links)
Our objective of the thesis is to investigate how the Washington Capitals strategically works to create experiences in the context of hockey games and the surrounding events. How does the Washington Capitals create experiences? Is there anything to learn from the Washington Capitals experience strategy? Can their way of work be linked to theories about the experience economy?   Method: Secondary data such as printed sources and books, previous studies and articles. We conducted a qualitative field study in Washington D.C. We interviewed people at the organization of Washington Capitals and carried out participant and non-participant observations at headquarters and in the arena at game events.  Results & Conclusions: Washington Capitals are definitely working with experience economy, this is something that others could learn from. Washington Capitals are not working by any experience economy theories, they had never heard the term previously. However, their way of work is in line with the experience economy theories.   Suggestions for future research: The presentation of this study is limited since it is difficult to highlight events that create impression by writing. A similar study could favourably be presented by a movie. To obtain a better understanding of why the audience attend hockey games further studies could be done about the audience's motivation factors, both in Sweden and in the U.S.. Further studies could also be done in collaboration with a Swedish sports club to test the theoretical methods in reality.    Contribution of the thesis: The essay can provide concrete examples of how a sports organization can work to create experiences in the context of their sporting events.

Hranice – redefinice městské struktury / Hranice – redefinition of urban structure

Stibůrková, Nikola January 2019 (has links)
This diploma project deals with a proposal for a new movie theater in the city of Hranice. The aim of this project is to explore the possibilities of cinema architecture, emphasizing the variability of the design solution. The cinema is viewed not as an object with one set function, but as a variable cultural space that plays important part in the cultural life of not only smaller towns. Important part of the design is also the scale - scale of the different events, the town itself as well as its society. There has been a broader redefinition of the urban structure and study of the surrounding development that preceded the cinema design itself, with emphasis on the 1. máje street and proposed linear park. New building of the movie theater corresponds with the proposed regulatives of the future development and cooperates with the newly proposed library, with which it creater new culturaly- educational center of the town.

Västberga Artistkollektiv

Fored, Simon January 2020 (has links)
Västberga Artistkolletiv (VAK), as a project, is an investigation into the self-image of my home town, Stockholm. It is a mapping of both the experienced and factual cultural scene in order to understand how and where an addition would be suitable. The end goal has been a physical building, a platform that strategically helps raising the creative potential of this city. The idea is to design a place dedicated to creating the best possible environment for recording live concerts, in regard to both audio and video. Hence, an acoustically perfected live venue for broadcasting and recording artists of various levels. The purpose is to provide a platform where they can grow, as well as spread their music and art. Furthermore, it is a meeting point for people, so experiencing a concert on site should not be regarded as less of a priority than the recorded material. On the larger scale the investigation aims to establish the link between the architecture - the venue, and the self-image of the city and its citizens, to see how they are nurturing each other. This is also a residential building, and a gathering spot for anyone that feels like they want to be a part of a creative environment, living inside a concert venue, while working on their own music or collaborating with the platform and radio station.

(Venue) Shopping for Felon Voting Rights

Jackson, Elijah 01 January 2019 (has links)
The research in this paper seeks to articulate how interest groups can effectively enfranchise the barred felon votes within their state through legislation. After following the history of felony voting laws in the United States, I first address and utilize Florida as a successful case study of felony enfranchisement. The state’s recent legislative victory in 2018 has returned tens of thousands of Floridians to the ballot, and is therefore, a superlative example to emulate in other state battles for felon rights. The paper also looks at the progress of felon voting rights made in Iowa. While Iowa still employs permanent felon disenfranchisement, the state is an integral example to study given that the electorate actually enjoyed felon enfranchisement from 2005-2011, before reverting back to disenfranchisement under executive orders. Iowa’s inability to secure felon voting rights would prove to be very informative on how implementing lasting legislation for felon rights is to be accomplished. The paper also considers the strategic implementation of legislation for felon voting rights through the lens of the venue shopping theory, which “refers to the activities of advocacy groups and policymakers who seek out a decision setting where they can air grievances with current policy and present alternative policy proposals.

台北與高雄的表演藝術環境—以表演設施為例 / The performing arts environment in Taipei and Kaohsiung - A case study of performance venues

吳蕙君, Wu, Huei Jiun Unknown Date (has links)
With respect to the investment on cultural infrastructure, more attention has always been paid to the Northern than to the Southern area of Taiwan. The aim of this study is to examine the factors that led to the differences in development of the performing arts environments in Taipei and Kaohsiung by reviewing the historical background and analyze specific cultural statistics. The results show that there are indeed some disparities in the performing arts environments between Taipei and Kaohsiung. However, while the demands for upgrading the respective performing arts environments in Taipei and Kaohsiung both continue to exist, future sustainability of their operation is as important as the establishment of new hardware in order to create a better environment for cultivating a cultural creative industry in Taiwan.

Etude expérimentale de propriétés mécaniques, de transport et poromécaniques d’un grès à haute porosité / Experimental study of mechanical, transport and poromechanical properties of a high porosity sandstone

Hu, Cong 28 November 2017 (has links)
This study aims to improve the understanding of the phenomenon of sand production around borehole during exploitation of natural gas storage. The source of sand may be due to structural factors or fatigue of the material because of the cyclic injection and extraction of gas pressure. This work focuses on the mechanical behaviors, transport properties and poromechanical proprieties of a sandstone. The Drucker-Pragger failure criterion is identified with triaxial effective stress without pore pressure. It can be used to evaluate the critical gas pressure causing rock failure at constant confining pressure and deviatoric stress. 80% of the critical gas pressure is then applied to observe whether different phenomenon will occur. Several cases of rupture are obtained after maintaining this gas pressure for a long time and cyclic loading-unloading of gas pressure damages the material significantly. At the meantime, the permeability of the material under axial stress decreases constantly even at volumetric dilatation stages which confirms the phenomenon of sand production. Finally, we find that mechanical damage increases its slightly natural anisotropy and it has a very significant influence on the poro-mechanical behaviors (Biot’s coefficient). This part of the work can be used to describe the structural effects induced by gas pressure variation around the borehole
