L’observation des défis économiques, sociaux et environnementaux qui préoccupent l’humanité aujourd’hui nous amène à revoir les modèles de croissance économiques adoptés, à reconnaitre leurs limites et à apporter un jugement critique sur la gouvernance de l’homme et sa manière d’exploiter le monde. La thèse cherche à démontrer comment l’épuisement des ressources naturelles et le recours aux principales énergies renouvelables, l’eau, le soleil et le vent, peuvent être utilisés pour approfondir la compréhension de la relation de l’homme vis-à-vis de l’environnement, le compromis nécessaire entre sa liberté et sa responsabilité et les principes moraux qui doivent informer sa conduite. Ces défis mettent en évidence l’urgence d’une réflexion critique sur l’activité financière aujourd’hui et sa contribution au développement réel et durable de l’économie. Ce travail propose, donc, d’explorer quelques possibilités de l’intégration contemporaine de principes « éthiques » dans les modes de financement de projets relatifs à l’utilisation de l’eau, du soleil et du vent. Nous donnons d’abord un état des lieux des modes de financement et d’investissement dits éthiques ou alternatifs. Nous considérons, en particulier, l’investissement socialement responsable, les marchés de capitaux durables, les institutions ayant pour mission l’inclusion financière, les banques multilatérales de développement et la finance participative. L’objectif est d’examiner comment des principes éthiques peuvent être intégrés dans les modes de financement modernes de projets verts et durables, c’est-à-dire comment l’expertise financière rejoint la préoccupation pour le changement climatique et les énergies renouvelables mondialement. Cette analyse démontre aussi l’intérêt croissant pour les questions de durabilité et de justice sociale, bien que sa concrétisation reste encore à questionner. / The observation of the economic, social and environmental challenges facing humanity today leads us to reconsider the models of economic growth pursued, to recognise their limitations and to give a critical assessment of human governance and his way of exploiting the world’s resources. The thesis seeks to demonstrate how the depletion of natural resources and the use of the main renewable energy sources, namely water, sun and wind can be used to deepen the understanding of man's relationship with the environment, the compromise between his freedom and responsibility and the moral principles that must govern his conduct. These challenges highlight the urgency of a critical thinking on the financial activity today and its contribution to the real and sustainable development of the economy. Thus, this work proposes to explore few examples of the contemporary integration of "ethical" principles in the financing modes of projects related to the use of water, sun and wind. We first give an assessment of the modes of financing and investment called ethical or alternative. We consider, in particular, socially responsible investing, sustainable capital markets, financial inclusion institutions, multilateral development banks and participatory finance. The objective is to examine how ethical principles can be integrated into the modern financing modes of green and sustainable projects, i.e. how the financial expertise integrates the concerns for climate change and renewable energies globally. This analysis also demonstrates the growing interest in issues related to sustainability and social justice, although their effective implementation can sometimes be questioned.

The aim of this essay is to examine and compare how virtue was depicted in the visual arts in medieval and renaissance Italy: why it was depicted this way; how the depiction of virtues may have differed between the two periods and, if so, what caused it to change. The essay first examines and analyses the history of virtue, beginning in classical antiquity, and the evolution of virtue through the Middle Ages and the virtues’ role in society and art. It follows with a close examination of Giotto di Bondone and his grisaille frescoes of the virtues and vices in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The essay then examines the role of virtue in renaissance society and art, followed by a close examination of Raphael and his frescoes of the heavenly virtues in the Stanza della Segnatura in The Vatican Palace in Rome. The essay concludes with a discussion of how the two periods differed in their depiction of virtue and why.

Academic Affairs Officers: An Application of the American Association of Community Colleges Competencies for Community College Leaders

Over the last two decades, several studies have confirmed that there is a leadership crisis among the nation's community colleges. In response to this leadership crisis, the American Association of Community Colleges [AACC] commissioned the development of a leadership competency framework consisting of six leadership competency areas deemed "either `very' or `extremely' essential to the effective performance of community college leaders." Since the release of this framework, limited research has been conducted on the importance of and the preparation in the identified competencies. The majority of research that has been conducted has focused on the position of president, even though there are several leadership positions within community colleges that are facing a leadership crisis. One such position is that of academic affairs officer. This study had two purposes. The first was to extend the research that has been conducted on the AACC leadership competencies by examining how community college academic affairs officers perceived the importance of and their own level of professional preparation in the identified competencies. The second was to examine the leadership development experiences that academic affairs officers identified as the most beneficial to their professional development as academic affairs officers. This study was a quantitative, descriptive, correlational design and used a questionnaire to collect data. The population for this study was academic affairs officers at public community colleges in the United States. The academic affairs officers that were included in the population were identified from the membership directory of the AACC. The survey instrument used for this study was based on the AACC leadership competency framework, as modified by Duree, which included 45 leadership competencies summarized into six leadership competency areas: organizational strategy, resource management, communication, collaboration, community college advocacy, and professionalism. Using two four-point scales, academic affairs officers (n=102) were asked to rate the importance of and their own level of professional preparation in the identified competencies. The survey instrument also asked academic affairs officers to rank the top five leadership development experiences that they feel have been the most beneficial to their professional development as academic affairs officers. In general, academic affairs officers believe that the AACC leadership competency areas are important for effective leadership in leading academic affairs. The most important leadership competency area was communication, followed by organizational strategy, community college advocacy, collaboration, professionalism, and resource management. In addition, academic affairs officers perceive that they are moderately or very well-prepared to perform many but not all of the identified competencies. For those identified competencies that academic affairs officers did not feel as prepared to perform, several were rated as important for effective leadership. Academic affairs officers ranked progressive job responsibilities as the leadership development experience felt to be the most beneficial to their professional development as academic affairs officers. Academic affairs officers then ranked challenging job assignments; participation in institutional task forces, committees, and commissions; and networking as the second, third, and fourth most beneficial leadership development experiences, respectively. The fifth most beneficial leadership development experience was networking, followed by attendance at conferences and specialized workshops. Based upon frequency totals, university-based degree programs and mentoring (role as mentee, not mentor) were also considered beneficial leadership development experiences. The significance of this study is that it provides practical, relevant, and timely information for both current practicing academic affairs officers and those who aspire to lead public community colleges in the position of academic affairs officer. The results of this study have several implications for practice. These implications include: to inform those persons seeking academic affairs officer positions of the relative importance of the AACC leadership competencies and the leadership development experiences deemed to be the most beneficial by a sample of incumbents; to inform leaders of higher education and professional development programs of the leadership competencies that should perhaps be included in the curricula of their programs; and to provide resources to be used by search committees in formulating desired qualifications and, later, in interviewing candidates for the position of academic affairs officer.

The Extirpation of Idolatry, a political-religious process that was created in the search and destruction of indigenous objects related to Amerindian religiosity, as well as in suppressing the worshipers of these beliefs, is linked to evangelization as one of its forms of expression. We have seen that during the period of the extirpation process, it was common to produce materials linked to religious doctrines and systematization of information that could guide the project promoted by the Church and by the religious orders present in the Viceroyalty. Thus, through the analysis of the manuals of Extirpation, Extirpación de la idolatría de los indios del Perú, 1621, by the Jesuit Pablo Jose de Arriaga, and Carta pastoral de exhortación e instruccion contra las idolatrias de los indios del arcebispado de Lima of 1649 by the Archbishop Pedro de Villagomez, written for the benefit of evangelization, we seek to understand, through the comparison of the discourses and the rhetoric of alterity, the relation existing between the writings of Pablo José de Arriaga and those of Pedro de Villagomez seeking to demarcate their differences and similarities in order to support our hypothesis that the religious conceptions of each one founded a different structure for the process of extirpation, thus modifying the construction of the process of Extirpation of Idolatries.

The Role of the Executive Vice President in Higher Education

The primary purpose of this investigation was to identify and describe the current role of the executive vice president in higher education. The subpurposes of the study were to determine (1) the duties of the executive vice president, (2) the decision-making responsibilities associated with the position, (3) the degree of agreement between presidents, executive vice presidents, and written documents regarding the duties of the office, and (4) the extent of numerical increase or decrease of the position. An analysis of the findings led to the following conclusions that (1) there is close agreement between presidents and executive vice presidents regarding the duties and requirements of the position of executive vice president; (2) there is little agreement between presidents of differing types and sizes of institutions and between vice presidents of such differing institutions; (3) a majority of institutions have written job descriptions for the position but few of these documents actually describe the position with detail; (4) this study also generated a composite job description; and (5) finally, demonstrates that the position of executive vice president has grown at a significant rate over the past decade.

The Seven Deadly Sins of Prostitution: Perceptions of Prostitutes and Prostitution in Eighteenth-Century London

This thesis examines perceptions of lower-class female prostitutes and prostitution in eighteenth-century London. It reveals that throughout the Hanoverian period perceptions of prostitution were shaped by sensibilities about morality, the social order, and sin. To explore attitudes towards prostitution in eighteenth-century London, this dissertation evaluates how governing elites, ecclesiastical authorities, contributors to the newspaper press, and popular commentators discussed prostitution. This dissertation engages with two main assumptions about prostitution in eighteenth-century London. First, it demonstrates that there is more continuity in perceptions of prostitution than historians have recognized; attitudes towards prostitutes did not shift from hostility to sympathy in a straight-forward manner. Second, this dissertation reveals that prostitution was regarded by Augustan and Hanoverian Londoners as a significant social problem because it embodied and encapsulated the seven deadly sins – lust, avarice, pride, envy, gluttony, sloth, and wrath. This thesis suggests that prostitutes’ excessive lust and avarice were not seen as disparate issues, but were often discussed together. Paradoxically, discussants recognized that financial considerations drove some women into prostitution, but these women were regarded as abnormally greedy and corrupt because they resorted to deceptive tactics. Pride and envy were associated with prostitution because Hanoverians believed some prostitutes bought extravagant clothes and cosmetics to conceal their lowly status and enhance their appearance to emulate elites. Hanoverians regarded these prostitutes with trepidation because they threatened to undermine their hierarchically ordered society. Prostitutes’ proclivities towards drunkenness and idleness were associated with gluttony and sloth. Commentators feared that drunken and idle prostitutes would encourage men to engage in these dissolute activities, leading to greater disorder. Wrath was closely associated with prostitution because of its association with violence. Although prostitutes were both the victims and perpetrators of assault, incidents in which prostitutes were assailants were reported more frequently, suggesting that Britons regarded prostitutes as disorderly, sinful criminals. Each chapter also brings attention to concerns regarding prostitutes’ lack of self-control and their apparent ability to cause men to lose self-control; how double standards of morality influenced discussions of prostitution; the consequences of prostitutes’ criminality and ability to deceive Londoners; and the various institutions, organizations, and suggestions proposed and established to reform prostitutes and eradicate sin from society.

An investigation of African-American male high school students' perceptions of African-American male vice principals as role models

This study gathered information on African American male high school students' perceptions of African American male vice principals as positive role models. Respondents were randomly selected African American male students in grades 10, 11, and 12 drawn from comprehensive high schools in the Oakland Unified School District, Oakland, California. To gather and analyze data for the study, two instruments were developed. One instrument was a questionnaire designed for African American male high school students. A second instrument was a questionnaire designed for African American male high school vice principals. In addition to the survey instruments, personal interviews were conducted with a small random sample of African American male students in an effort to gather more in-depth information than could be revealed in the survey instrument. Findings revealed that African American male students generally do not perceive African American male vice principals in their schools as role models. The primary reason given was African American males are most often cast in disciplinary roles and only “do the white man's work.” Despite this finding, African American male students feel a need for, and want, African American males vice principals in their schools. The study further revealed that these students have a strong desire to see African American male vice principals in roles other than disciplinary.
