During the 1970s, the world was undergoing quite significant changes in cultural terms, especially given the rise of the counterculture and other social movements that emerged in the complex postwar scene in North America. While some Americans were experiencing the possibility of being politically engaged in order to offer a different perspective to their universe, other individuals were interested in the idea of escapism and in the construction of a narrative that could keep them away from all the possible problems. Considering the relationship of the Eurocentric subject with the wilderness and the space of the Other represented in the writing of Robert Kroetsch’s Gone Indian (1973), some characteristics might be analyzed based on Cultural Studies theories and scholars such as Gayatri Spivak, Homi K. Bhabha, Bill Ashcroft, Margaret Atwood, among others. Such characteristics will help to understand the subtext of silence and its construction in the narrative and discourse of the characters Mark Madham and Jeremy Sadness – or in the absence of speech in the figure of the great whiteness itself – undermining the traditional narratives through the exercise of a plural reading of the official history.

Représentation de l'Indien dans le roman américain de la première moitié du 19e siècle / Representation of the Indian in the American novels of the first half of the 19th Century

Foulon, Jacqueline 04 July 2009 (has links)
This work results from the close reading of nineteen American novels written in the first half of the 19th century, in a search of the various representations of the Indian they might display. Crossed investigations proved that the authors, well-informed about the violent past of their familiar areas and about their former inhabitants, mostly chose the forms of the historical romance and tale : either noble or ignoble, Indians were rejected out of the new nation. Yet, the ironical Paulding, the Christian Cooper and the humanist Strange styled their Indian characters in an open and human way. Following the gothic and romantic influences, C.B. Brown, Neal, Bird despite a more realistic tone, pictured Indians as the negative part of the self which is to be repelled. On the contrary, the woman's voices of Child and Sedgwick sketched them as ideal knights. Simms and Cooper sometimes set them in the violence of an epic drama out of which the new Adam will arise, sometimes in the sublime beauty of pristine American wilderness. So, no national destiny is left for the Indian but one buried in fancy

Getting to the roots of wilderness : Chinese Canadian immigrant perceptions of wilderness in British Columbia

Geddes, Bronwen Claire 11 1900 (has links)
For centuries, Western societies thought of wilderness as a barren, desolate place that harboured temptation and sin. Over the last hundred and fifty years, a marked shift has occurred in Western perception of this so-called savage place; it has become revered, protected, and even worshipped. What was once the Devil's playground is now thought to provide a locus of spiritual regeneration and hope for the future. In North America, this pronounced shift is thought to coincide with notions of the sublime and the frontier. This study explores the perceptions of wilderness among Chinese Canadian immigrants in British Columbia, people who have been less influenced by concepts of the sublime and frontier. It examines closely the idea that wilderness today is a self-evident construct that holds across most inhabitants of the province. Instead, ideas about wilderness held by people who have immigrated from China, similar to the ideas held by early immigrants from Europe, are influenced by tradition (especially Confucianism, Taoism, and, more recently, Maoism), space (i.e. coming from densely populated areas), and language. Through this study, it has become apparent that the language and discourse surrounding wilderness in Canada is markedly different from that of Chinese Canadian immigrants. While the language and meaning of wilderness, as referred to in Western society, is assumed relatively easily for interviewees, the identification with moral and aesthetic responses common to discussions of wilderness in North America is much less likely to manifest itself. Wilderness, which represented barrenness and desolation to interviewees when they lived in China, has come to represent forests, mountains, animals, and lack of human influence. What previously had different philosophical meaning, now, in a cognitive sense, represents beauty and, potentially, a locus of spirituality. The results of this study have important consequences for decision-making in cross-cultural environments. Policy surrounding wilderness or environmental preservation may be without meaning or relevance to new immigrants, who bring with them shared meanings and relationships to nature that may or may not be incongruous with Canadian environmental policy. In facing such debates, it is crucial to understand the perceptions of various players and how those ideas are linked to tradition, language, and the geography of the familiar. It is also critical to ask - What is wilderness and why are we protecting it above all else? / Science, Faculty of / Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES), Institute for / Graduate

Lord of the Rings, Lord of Nature : A postcolonial-ecocritical study of J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and its implications in the EFL classroom

Lobo Jansson, Stefan January 2018 (has links)
This essay examines J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings through the application of a theoretical framework of postcolonial ecocriticism, endeavoring to discern the author’s concerns and the environmental and colonial underpinnings interwoven in the novel through a thematic analysis focusing on the concepts of pastoral, nature, wilderness and development. The results show that Tolkien undoubtedly projected his profound sentiments for environmental disruption as a product of a rapidly changing world during his lifetime. Although Tolkien’s trilogy is a work of high fantasy written in a different context, this essay argues that it is valid for scrutiny in relation to contemporary society. Furthermore, this study investigates the implementation of the text in the Swedish EFLclassroom with the purpose of raising students’ awareness for, and investment in the environment, whilst improving their all-round communicative skills, ultimately educating for a sustainable future.

"Wand'ring this Woody Maze": Deciphering the Obscure Wilderness of Paradise Regained

Johnson, Brooke 01 May 2020 (has links)
The setting of Milton’s great sequel is puzzling, being called a desert and a “waste wild” (IV. 523) repeatedly and at the same time including descriptions of protective oaks and woody mazes. These conflicting descriptions conjure up several questions: In which environment does the epic take place? Because Milton is so detailed in his adaptations of biblical narrative the inclusion of trees is quite perplexing. While he does tend to expand biblical narrative quite frequently – e.g. Paradise Lost – he rarely initiates a change without just cause. The crux of this particular change centers on what this just cause could be. How does the addition of a few trees change the overall effect of Milton’s brief epic? This thesis thus attempts to find further meaning in Paradise Regained’s setting by exploring three possibilities for this just cause while uncovering what the concept of a tree/forest means in early modern England.

Utomhuspedagogikens inverkan på berättande texter : En empirisk studie om skapandet av berättande texter i en utomhusmiljö / The impact of outdoor education on narrative texts : an empirical study on the creation of narrative texts in an outdoor environment

Johansson Dahl, Linn, Aronsson, Elliana January 2022 (has links)

Terapi utan väggar : Friluftsterapi för barn och ungdomar med psykisk ohälsa / Therapy Without Walls : Wilderness Therapy for Adolescents with Mental Illness

Lagercrantz, Anna, Namork, Miriam January 2022 (has links)
Mental illness among adolescents is increasing around the world. It is becoming more and more crucial to find alternatives for treating mental illnesses. Wilderness therapy gives adolescents the opportunity to get away from destructive settings while avoiding the limitations of traditional therapy. Wilderness therapy is a form of group therapy where adolescents are faced with challenges in an outdoor environment. Even though wilderness therapy is increasing within the field of mental health treatment, there is still a lack of research from a Swedish perspective. This study aims to shed light on what wilderness therapy can contribute to the treatment of adolescents with mental illness, and what opportunities and obstacles there are to use wilderness therapy. The study is a qualitative literature review, and through a thematic content analysis, 12 articles were analysed. To implement the analysis, the symbolic interactionism and attachment theory have been used as a theoretical framework. The result of the study shows both positive effects of wilderness therapy, as well as negative ones. To prescribe an implementation of wilderness therapy, further studies on the subject are called for with a special focus based on the Swedish context.

URBAN WILDERNESS: POSTKULTURNÍ SÍDLO / URBAN WILDERNESS: POSTCULTURAL SITE

Čenovská, Kateřina Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of the work is to introduce a different way of looking at the process of urban planning in the so-called shrinking cities. The plan of endless development is questioned. The stagnation scenario, as a form of conservation, is presented as a certain level of natural development of the city. The potential of forgotten parts of the city is emphasized. The postcultural landscape meets man.

Panoramic Video for Efficient Ground Surveillance from Small Unmanned Air Vehicles

Jackson, Joseph Aaron 16 April 2007 (has links) (PDF)
As unmanned air vehicle (UAV) utilization increases in Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) efforts, onboard sensors yielding more information will be desired. UAVs can assist WiSAR efforts by accelerating the ground search process through returning quality aerial footage of the terrain. Additionally, tracking the progress of a search by populating a digital map with video resolution data increases confidence that a comprehensive search of the region has been made. This thesis presents methods for acquiring video from multiple video sensors and fusing them into a single rendered video stream as a Virtual Gimbal. The panoramic video stream is the first of its kind to be constructed from video transmissions from a small UAV, and the first known video panorama to be used to quickly survey a region within a WiSAR context. The Virtual Gimbal comprises two video transmissions from a three camera array mounted in a downward-looking configuration on a UAV. This video stream has been shown to decrease the amount of time required to thoroughly survey a region by more than 40 percent.

On Autonomous Multi-agent Control in Wilderness Search and Rescue: A Mixed Initiative Approach

Hardin, Benjamin C. 07 August 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Searching for lost people in a Wilderness Search and Rescue (WiSAR) scenario is a task that can benefit from large numbers of agents, some of whom may be robotic. These agents may have differing levels of autonomy, determined by the set of tasks they are performing. In addition, the level of autonomy that results in the best performance may change due to varying workload or other factors. Allowing a supervisor and a searcher to jointly decide the correct level of autonomy for a given situation (“mixed initiative”) results in better overall performance than giving an agent absolute control over their level of autonomy (“adaptive autonomy”) or giving a supervisor absolute control over the agent's level of autonomy (“adjustable autonomy”).
