This dissertation aims at discussing solutions to deal with spectral analysis of stationary and non-stationary processes for frequency estimation, power spectral density estimation and spectral monitoring applications. The frequency estimation techniques are assessed through computer simulations. The proposed technique for frequency estimation is based on warped discrete Fourier transform outperforms other techniques, achieving the Cramer-Rao Bound for a wide range of signal to noise ratio. Regarding the power spectral density estimation, the proposed Hartley Multitaper Method shows similar performance, in terms of variance of estimates and polarization spectrum; however, it can simplify the implementation complexity. The introduced spectrum sensing technique is based on quanta de nition and the diversity o ered by the signals acquired from the electric power grids and the air. Based on computer-generation data and those one obtained during a measurement campaign, which one in this thesis is evaluated using synthetic signals, generated by computer, as well as measurement data of the spectrum. The numerical results show that the proposed technique outperforms a previous technique and can attain the very detection ratio and the very low false alarm when the diversity yielded by electric power grid and air is exploited.

Application à des modèles de survie / Adaptive estimation with warped or incomplete data. Application to survival analysis

Chagny, Gaëlle 05 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents various problems of adaptive functional estimation, using projection and kernel methods, and criterions inspired both by model selection and Lepski's methods. The common point of the studied statistical setting is to deal with transformed and/or incomplete data. The first part proposes a method of estimation with a "warping" device which permits to handle the estimation of functions such as additive and multiplicative regression, conditional density, hazard rate based on randomly right-censored data, and cumulative distribution function from current-status data. The aim is to estimate a function from a sample of random variable (X,Y). We use the warped data (ф(X),Y), to propose adaptive estimators, where ф is a one-to-one function that we also estimate (e.g. the cumulative distribution function of X). The interest is twofold. From the theoretical point of view, the estimators are optimal in the oracle sense. From the practical point of view, they can be easily computed, thanks to their simple explicit expression. The second part deals with a two-sample problem : we compare the distribution of two variables X and Xₒ by studying the relative density, defined as the density of Fₒ(X) (Fₒ is the c.d.f. of Xₒ). We build adaptive estimators, from a double data-sample, possibly censored. Non-asymptotic risk bounds are proved, and convergence rates are also derived.

Now Loading...

Erlandsson, Hannes, Hansen, Jesper January 2020 (has links)
The recent years have seen smartphone use grow to become the most popular way to access the web. With this, waiting online has also become increasingly affected by surrounding factors connected to context, for example through visual and auditory distractions. In the study, we explore necessary design-choices in order to adapt the design to the increasingly varied surroundings and distractions in a smartphone environment and to reduce the user(s) perceived waiting time. We explore and evaluate ways to design with the purpose to shorten the user(s) perceived waiting time and therefore lead to a more positive user experience during smartphone use. The study’s contribution results in three design suggestions for how loaders can be designed for a better perceived waiting time within a mobile user context with external distractions in mind.

An index theorem for operators with horn singularities

Lapp, Frank 05 November 2013 (has links)
The closed extensions of geometric operators (Spin-Dirac, Gauss-Bonnet and Signature operator) on a manifold with metric horns are Fredholm operators, and their indices were computed by Matthias Lesch, Norbert Peyerimhoff and Jochen Brüning. It was shown that the restrictions of all three operators to a punctured neighbourhood of the singular point are unitary equivalent to a class of irregular singular operator-valued differential operators of first order. The solution operators of the corresponding differential equations defined a parametrix which was applied to prove the Fredholm property. In this thesis a class of irregular singular differential operators of first order - called horn operators - is introduced that extends the examples mentioned above. It is proved that an elliptic differential operator of first order whose restriction to the neighbourhood of the singular point is unitary equivalent to a horn operator is Fredholm and its index is computed. Finally, this abstract index theorem is applied to compute the indices of geometric operators on manifolds with multiply warped product singularities that extend the notion of metric horns considerably.
