ABSTRACT This study focuses on twenty-one particular texts published in 1925 as contemporaries of The Great Gatsby. The manuscript is divided into four categories—The Impressionists, The Experimentalists, The Realists, and The Independents. Among The Impressionists are F. Scott Fitzgerald himself, Willa Cather (The Professor’s House), Sherwood Anderson (Dark Laughter), William Carlos Williams (In the American Grain), Elinor Wylie (The Venetian Glass Nephew), John Dos Passos (Manhattan Transfer), and William Faulkner (New Orleans Sketches). The Experimentalists are Gertrude Stein (The Making of Americans), E. E. Cummings (& aka “Poems 48-96”), Ezra Pound (A Draft of XVI Cantos), T. S. Eliot (“The Hollow Men”), Laura Riding (“Summary for Alastor”), and John Erskine (The Private Life of Helen of Troy). The Realists are Theodore Dreiser (An American Tragedy), Edith Wharton (The Mother’s Recompense), Upton Sinclair (Mammonart), Ellen Glasgow (Barren Ground), Sinclair Lewis (Arrowsmith), James Boyd (Drums), and Ernest Hemingway (In Our Time). The Independents are Archibald MacLeish (The Pot of Earth) and Robert Penn Warren (“To a Face in a Crowd”). Although these twenty-two texts may in some cases represent literary fragmentations, each in its own way also represents a coherent response to the spirit of the times that is in one way or another cognate to The Great Gatsby. The fact that all these works appeared the same year is special because the authors, if not already famous, would become famous, and their works were or would come to represent classic American literature around the world. The twenty-two authors either knew each other personally or knew each other’s works. Naturally, they were also influenced by writings of international authors and philosophers. The greatest common elements among the poets and fiction writers are their uninhibited interest in sex, an absorbing cynicism about life, and the frequent portrayal of disintegration of the family, a trope for what had happened to the countries and to the “family of nations” that experienced the Great War. In 1925, it would seem, Fitzgerald and many of his writing peers—some even considered his betters—channeled a major spirit of the times, and Fitzgerald did it more successfully than almost anyone.

This dissertation constructs a cultural history of women's performances in Boston from 1762-1823, using materialist feminism and ethnohistory. I look at how "woman" was historically understood at that time, and how women used those discourses to their advantage when constructing performances that allowed them to intervene in political culture. I examine a broad range of performance activities from white, black, and Native American women of all classes. Chapter two discusses three of Boston's elite female intellectuals: Mercy Otis Warren, Judith Sargent Murray, and Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton. Though each woman's writings have been examined individually, I examine them as a community. With the connections and public recognition they built, they helped found the Federal Street Theatre where they could have a ventrioloquized embodied performance for their ideas on women's rights, abolition, and political parties. Chapter three looks at the construction of three solo performances: Phillis Wheatley performing her poetry in 1772; the 1802 theatre tour of Deborah Sampson Gannett, who fought as a man in the revolution; and the monologues and wax effigy creations of Patience Lovell Wright circa 1772. These women depended on their performances for sustenance, and in Wheatley's case, to secure her freedom from bondage. I look at the way these women created a mythology about themselves and crafted a marketable image, both on and off the stage. In particular, I examine the ways each grappled with a charged discourse surrounding their bodies. In chapter four I look at fashion as performance. I explore homespun dresses as political propaganda, Native American and black women's use of clothing to express cultural pride that white Anglo society had attempted to erase, and the way that women used mourning costumes to perform and create nationalism at the mock funerals held for Washington after he died in 1799. In my conclusion I contrast the 2008 miniseries John Adams with a solo performance of Phillis Wheatley. I briefly trace the trajectory of the history of women during this time. I argue that focusing on performance identifies and legitimizes other sources of evidence and locates examples of women's agency in shaping popular culture. / text

The Stockenström judgment, the Warren report and the Griqualand West rebellion, 1876-8

From Preface: South African frontiers periodically provided the backdrop for conflict between Blacks and Whites over land, and, in this respect, Griqualand West proved no exception. The arrival of the trekboers in the 1830s heralded the beginning of the land problem in Griqualand West, and the situation worsened with the discovery of diamonds and the subsequent influx of land-hungry Whites. By the 1870s the stage was then set for a major clash between Blacks and Whites with land as the central focus. The Griqualand West Administration tried to rectify this situation in 1875 by setting up a Land Court under Judge Andries Stockenström. Stockenström's judgment was highly controversial, as many Griqua and Blacks lost land, although no land which had been claimed by a Griqua or Black was granted to a White. As Stockenström had not resolved the land problem, the Griqualand West authorities brought in Captain Charles Warren to settle the matter of land ownership in the Province. The Warren Report was considered by all concerned to be fair, but it did not prevent the outbreak of hostilities in 1878. The two main foci of this study are, then, land ownership and the Rebellion and the link, if any, between them. The main sources for the work have been the Griqualand West archive in the Cape Archives, for the period 1872-1880, and various newspapers. The Cape and Imperial Blue Books were useful sources, especially on the military history of the rebellion. Interviews conducted in Bophuthatswana and Griqualand West clarified many obscure points and raised others, most of which have been answered in this work. Doctrine and Covenants Section 110: From Vision to Canonization

This thesis answers the question of how a vision recorded in Joseph Smith's journal found its home in the Doctrine and Covenants and become recognized as canonized scripture. The April 3, 1836, journal entry became known as Section 110. Section 110 serves as a foundation for the current practices and doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, involving temple building and temple ordinances. Thus it is important to understand the history of this Section from journal entry to canonization because it is an example of recovering revelation. This thesis also explores contributing factors that could have led to the rediscovery of the 1836 vision. While Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery were in the Kirtland Temple with veils drawn around them at the Melchizedek Priesthood pulpits on April 3, 1836, they both saw Jesus Christ, Moses, Elias, and Elijah. Jesus Christ accepted the newly built temple and Moses, Elias, and Elijah committed keys to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. The vision was recorded, but as of yet, there is no evidence that the vision was publicly taught by Joseph Smith nor by Oliver Cowdery. This thesis follows the pattern established by Section 110 and the reclamation of the revelation and looks at how this section paved the way for other revelations and visions to move from handwritten pages to doctrinal levels of canonization, such as Sections 137 and 138. Joseph Smith had the vision recorded in his journal by Warren Cowdery, who served as a scribe to him. Joseph Smith also had the journal entry written in the Manuscript History of the Church. Although Joseph Smith did not publically declare that the 1836 vision had occurred to him and Oliver Cowdery, he still taught about the visitors in the vision and of their importance. After Joseph Smith's death, the leaders of the Church had his history printed in Church owned newspapers. The first time the vision was published in print was on November 6, 1852, in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Deseret News. Outside influences of the late 1850s through the 1860s put pressure on the Church. Some of these potentially destructive influences were the Utah War, Civil War, transcontinental railroad, Spiritualism movement, and the lack of understanding of the foundational doctrines of the Church by the rising generation that had been a part of the Church from its beginnings with Joseph Smith as its Prophet. This thesis explores these potentially destructive forces on the Church and its doctrine, and looks at how the leadership of the Church responded to them and how their response influenced the canonization of the 1836 vision. Under the direction of Brigham Young, Orson Pratt oversaw the publication of the new 1876 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants. This new edition contained twenty-six new sections, including Section 110. After the death of Brigham Young in 1877, John Taylor sat at the head of the Church as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. While Orson Pratt was in England, preparing to print a new edition of the Book of Mormon on electrotype plates, he asked John Taylor about printing the Doctrine and Covenants with the electrotype plates as well. John Taylor agreed on condition that Orson Pratt add cross references and explanatory notes, as he had done with the Book of Mormon. Using the 1876 edition, Orson Pratt made the requested additions and the new edition of the Doctrine and Covenants was printed in 1880 and canonized on October 10, 1880, in a General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where all present voted unanimously to accept the 1880 edition as canonized scripture.

Portée de l’exploitation du lapin (Oryctolagus cuniculus) par les humains au Dernier Maximum Glaciaire dans la Péninsule Ibérique : intégration de la Optimal Foraging Theory avec la Modélisation à Base d’Agents

L’introduction de petites faunes au sein du régime alimentaire humain dans le passé constitue un sujet de recherche essentiel dans la compréhension des modes de subsistance des chasseurs-cueilleurs, notamment au Paléolithique supérieur. Durant cette période, et notamment au Dernier Maximum Glaciaire, le lapin de garenne (Oryctolagus cuniculus) domine les assemblages fauniques de nombreux sites archéologiques de la Péninsule Ibérique. Plusieurs hypothèses ont été avancées afin de comprendre le rôle que ce petit gibier a pu jouer dans la subsistance des groupes humains. Néanmoins, la multitude et la variété de ces hypothèses reflètent, d’un côté, le manque de consensus quant à la portée de l’exploitation du lapin dans la subsistance durant cette période dans la Péninsule Ibérique, et elles soulignent d’un autre côté que l’appréhension des implications économiques, technologiques, environnementales et sociales de son exploitation est une tâche complexe. A partir de ce double constat, j’ai dès lors établi comme problématique d’explorer les potentielles motivations liées à la chasse du lapin et d'appréhender le rapport entre les humains et cette espèce de petite taille, et ce dans l’objectif d’obtenir une meilleure compréhension des modes de subsistance adoptés pendant cette période en Ibérie. L’approche développée dans cette thèse repose sur la proposition que l’explication du pourquoi les humains exploitaient le lapin doit être traitée par une compréhension du comment les humains chassaient ce petit gibier. Si nous voulons analyser le régime alimentaire humain dans le passé, nous devons effectivement comprendre comment les humains prenaient leurs décisions cynégétiques. A cette fin, un des cadres théoriques principalement utilisé en archéologie, la Optimal Foraging Theory, a été employé, en complément de la modélisation à base d’agents. La problématique a été répartie en trois questions de recherche distinctes et complémentaires, chacune faisant l’objet d’une publication. Dans le premier article, l’application du Diet Breadth Model issu de la Optimal Foraging Theory a permis d’observer que l’exploitation d’une garenne est optimale lorsque plusieurs individus capturent un minimum de 7 lapins à l’aide de filets au cours du Dernier Maximum Glaciaire dans la Péninsule Ibérique. Dans le second article, nous avons mené des expériences de simulation à travers le développement d’un modèle à base d’agents pour évaluer les implications de ce type d’exploitation dans un cadre plus réaliste au sein duquel les humains interagissent, avant de l'intégrer, dans le troisième article, dans différents contextes socio-économiques qui lui sont associés et observés dans le registre ethno-historique. Nos résultats montrent que la composition du régime alimentaire humain et, par-là, le retour énergétique quotidien, sont influencés par l'organisation sociale entre les membres d'un groupe, la stratégie de chasse et la technologie associée afin d’exploiter une garenne. Particulièrement, la rentabilité de l’exploitation des ressources est encore plus grande si les femmes, les enfants et les ainés sont impliqués dans l’exploitation des garennes à travers des battues et/ou l’aide de filets. Par conséquent, cette thèse expose que le développement de formations socio-culturelles optimales basées sur une division des tâches de subsistance selon l’âge et/ou le sexe (et de la technologie qui leur est associée) a pu permettre aux groupes humains de s'adapter aux environnements de la Péninsule Ibérique au Dernier Maximum Glaciaire. Finalement, le lapin ayant probablement été un complément alimentaire important pendant cette période, cette thèse souligne la nécessité de considérer son exploitation (et celle de petites faunes en général) lors de l’interprétation du registre zooarchéologique car des changements d’un point de vue économique, technologique mais aussi socio-culturel dans les modes de subsistance adoptés dans le passé peuvent être ainsi appréhendés. / The introduction of small fauna into the human diet in the past is an essential research topic in the understanding of hunter-gatherer subsistence patterns, particularly in the Upper Paleolithic. During this period, and particularly during the Last Glacial Maximum, the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) dominates the faunal assemblages of many archaeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula. Several hypotheses have been proposed to understand the role played by this small game in the subsistence of past human groups. Nevertheless, the number and diversity of these hypotheses first reflect a lack of agreement as to the extent to which rabbits played a role in subsistence during this period in the Iberian Peninsula. Secondly, they underline the complexity of understanding the economic, technological, environmental, and social implications of rabbit exploitation. From these observations, I established as the problematic to explore the potential motivations behind rabbit hunting, and to apprehend the relationship between humans and this small game, with the aim of providing a better understanding of the subsistence patterns adopted during this period in Iberia. The approach developed in this thesis is based on that the explanation of why humans exploited rabbits must be addressed by an understanding of how humans hunted them. If we are to analyze human diet in the past, we must indeed understand how humans made their hunting decisions. To this end, one of the theoretical frameworks mainly used in archaeology, the Optimal Foraging Theory, has been adopted, complemented by Agent-Based Modeling. I divided the problematic into three distinct and complementary research questions, each the subject of a publication. In the first article, the application of the Diet Breadth Model derived from the Optimal Foraging Theory enabled us to observe that the exploitation of a warren is optimal when several individuals capture a minimum of 7 rabbits using nets during the Las Glacial Maximum in the Iberian Peninsula. In the second paper, we carried out simulation experiments through the development of an Agent-Based Model to assess the implications of this type of exploitation in a more realistic environment in which humans interact, before integrating it, in the third paper, into different socio-economic contexts related to it and observed in the ethno-historical record. Our results show that the composition of the human diet and, consequently, the daily energetic return are influenced by the social organization between group members, the hunting strategy and the associated technology employed for exploiting a warren. In particular, the energetic efficiency of resource exploitation is even greater if women, children, and elders are involved in exploiting warrens through net hunting and/or drives. Consequently, this thesis argues that the development of optimal socio-cultural group configurations based on an age and/or gender-based division of labor (and their associated technology) may have enabled human groups to successfully adapt to the environments of the Iberian Peninsula during the Last Glacial Maximum. Finally, as rabbit was probably an important energetic source during this period, this thesis highlights the need to consider its exploitation (and that of small game in general) when interpreting the zooarchaeological record, as not only economic and technological, but also socio-cultural changes in subsistence patterns adopted in the past can be apprehended.

Embryo Adoption: Implications of Personhood, Marriage, and Parenthood

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / One’s personal claims regarding personhood will influence his moral belief regarding embryo adoption. In Chapter One, I consider the personhood of the human embryo. If the human embryo is a person, we are morally obligated to permit the practice of embryo adoption as an ethical means to save human persons. However, for those who do not claim that an embryo is a person at conception, embryo adoption is not a necessary practice because we have no moral obligation to protect them. There are still others who claim that personhood is gained at some point during gestation when certain mental capacities develop. I offer my own claim that consciousness and sentience as well as the potential to be self-conscious mark the beginning of personhood. Embryo adoption raises several questions surrounding the institution of marriage. Due to its untraditional method of procreation, embryo adoption calls into question the role of procreation within marriage. In Chapter Two, I explore the nature of the marriage relationship by offering Lisa Cahill’s definition of marriage which involves both a spiritual and physical dimension, and then I describe the concept of marriage from different perspectives including a social, religious, and a personal perspective. From a personal perspective, I explore the relationship between marriage and friendship. Finally, I describe how the concept of marriage is understood today and explore the advantages to being married as opposed to the advantages of being single. Embryo adoption changes the way we customarily think about procreation within a family because in embryo adoption, couples are seeking an embryo from another union to be implanted into the woman. This prompts some philosophers to argue that embryo adoption violates the marriage relationship. In Chapter Three, I further consider the impact of embryo adoption on the family as an extension of the marital relationship as well as the impact of embryo adoption on the traditional roles of motherhood and fatherhood. I examine motherhood by looking at how some philosophers define motherhood and when these philosophers claim a woman becomes a mother.
