Design of simulation platform joigning site specific radio propagation and human mobility for localization applications / Conception d'une plateforme de simulation spécialisée dans la propagation radio et la mobilité humaine pour des applications de localisation

Amiot, Nicolas 02 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the development of tools and methods dedicated for ultra wide band (UWB) localization systems in indoor environment. The thesis work was conducted within the European FP7 project Where2, about the cooperative localization in cellular networks. Data from a measurement campaign conduct during the project are used to validate the proposed algorithms. This thesis is divided in four parts : The first part is focused on the description of an original raytraing tool based on a graph description. In order to be compliant with the requirement of a mobile simulation, a new concept of rays signature enabling incremental computation, and a vectorized formalism for processing rays are described and implemented. The second part is focused on the indoor localization techniques, where a novel technique based on interval analysis approaches is presented and compared to alternative techniques. Advantageously using this approach, a specific processing based on an hypothesis testing method using received power observations to resolve ambiguities appearing in under determined localization problems is described. A third part describes different aspects of the dynamic platform. In particular a realistic mobility model based on ''steering behaviors'', a graph description of the network scene and an inter agents communication protocol are detailed. The fourth section uses measured data obtained from an heterogeneous measurement campaign to validate both the developed software platform and the proposed localization algorithms.

DYNAMICKÁ ANALÝZA ZÁKLADOVÉ KONSTRUKCE V INTERAKCI S PODZÁKLADÍM / DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THE SOIL-FOUNDATION INTERACTION

Martinásek, Josef Unknown Date (has links)
Thesis deals with problems of the soil-structure interaction. In the theoretical part is described the approach to mathematical modeling of structure-foundation-soil interaction. The subsoil models are further described in detail, including the models with piles (both static and dynamics models). In the next chapter there is described the dynamics theory of the systems with single or more degrees of freedom. There is also an analysis of propagation, reflection and refraction of mechanical one-dimensional waves (P-wave, S-wave) and spatial waves (P- wave, SV-wave, SH-wave) and waves in homogeneous half-space (R-wave L-wave). The numerical analysis is logically sorted from hand calculation of the parameter change influence on the modal characteristics to complex computational FEM model of the machine with a foundation on piles placed in the spatial block of soil. Numerical studies aim to determine the influence of the subsoil model on the modal characteristics and thus confirm the absolute necessity of the subsoil model in tasks of dynamics. The next goal is to determine the appropriate key parameters of the computational model: the size of finite element, suitable shape of subsoil model, suitable inclination of boundary condition and suitable boundary conditions. For creating of set of computational models was used language APDL in conjunction with ANSYS software interface. All used input files are listed in the Annex.

Modeling and Analysis of Wave and Damaging Phenomena in Biological and Bioinspired Materials

Nicolas Guarin-Zapata (6532391) 06 May 2021 (has links)
<p> There is a current interest in exploring novel microstructural architectures that take advantage of the response of independent phases. Current guidelines in materials design are not just based on changing the properties of the different phases but also on modifying its base architecture. Hence, the mechanical behavior of composite materials can be adjusted by designing microstructures that alternate stiff and flexible constituents, combined with well-designed architectures. One source of inspiration to achieve these designs is Nature, where biologically mineralized composites can be taken as an example for the design of next-generation structural materials due to their low density, high-strength, and toughness currently unmatched by engineering technologies.</p><p><br></p> <p>The present work focuses on the modeling of biologically inspired composites, where the source of inspiration is the dactyl club of the Stomatopod. Particularly, we built computational models for different regions of the dactyl club, namely: periodic and impact regions. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the effect of microstructure present in the impact and periodic regions in the impact resistance associated with the materials present in the appendage of stomatopods. The main contributions of this work are twofold. First, we built a model that helped to study wave propagation in the periodic region. This helped to identify possible bandgaps and their influence on the wave propagation through the material. Later on, we extended what we learned from this material to study the bandgap tuning in bioinspired composites. Second, we helped to unveil new microstructural features in the impact region of the dactyl club. Specifically, the sinusoidally helicoidal composite and bicontinuous particulate layer. For these, structural features we developed finite element models to understand their mechanical behavior.</p><p><br></p> <p>The results in this work help to elucidate some new microstructures and present some guidelines in the design of architectured materials. By combining the current synthesis and advanced manufacturing methods with design elements from these biological structures we can realize potential blueprints for a new generation of advanced materials with a broad range of applications. Some of the possible applications include impact- and vibration-resistant coatings for buildings, body armors, aircraft, and automobiles, as well as in abrasion- and impact-resistant wind turbines.</p><br>

Microwave interaction in nonlinear metamaterials

Lapine, Mikhail 22 September 2004 (has links)
This Thesis is devoted to theoretical investigation of the effective magnetic properties of nonlinear metamaterials, based on resonant conductive elements.A general expression for the effective bulk ermeability in the microwave frequency range is derived. Frequency dispersion of the permeability is studied and recommendations for optimisation of metamaterials with negative permeability are given. The results are supported with numerical simulation of the finite metamaterial sample.Next, a metamaterial possessing nonlinear magnetic responseowing to nonlinear electronic components, inserted into resonant conductive elements, is proposed. For the limit of low nonlinearity, the arising quadratic nonlinear susceptibility is calculated; it is shown how it is controlled by the properties and arrangement of the structure elements as well as by the type and characteristics of the insertion. For the insertions operating in essentially nonlinear regime, when a nonlinear magnetic susceptibility cannot be introduced, an approach is developed for analyzing three-wave coupling processes with a strong pump wave and two weak signals. Peculiarities of coupling, arising from use the insertions with variable resistance or variable capacitance are discussed. Estimates are given that extremely strong nonlinear coupling can be achieved using typical diodes reported in literature. Finally, it is demonstrated how the metamaterial band gap can be tuned, and the resulting metamaterial switching between transmitting, reflecting and absorbing states is described. The details appear to depend drastically on the type of nonlinear components inserted into the resonant conductive elements. Relying on practical estimates, it is predicted that the transmittance of a metamaterial slab can be modulated by several orders of magnitude already using a slab with thickness equal to one microwave wavelength in vacuum.

Phruksahiran, Narathep 05 March 2013 (has links)

Numerical Simulations of Wave Propagation between a Left-Handed Material and a Right-Handed Material / Numeriska simuleringar av vågutbredning mellan ett vänsterhänt material och ett högerhänt material

Rana, Balwan January 2021 (has links)
The discovery of metamaterials has led to major advances in different fields of physics including optics, microwave engineering and acoustics. Specific to theoretical electromagnetism, the introduction of metamaterials have led to the development of negative-index materials (NIMs) with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability with backward-wave propagation. In recent studies, exact analytical solutions for wave propagation from a step/graded-index interface between a right-handed material (RHM) and a left-handed material (LHM) have been obtained. This study attempts to provide numerical validation of the analytical solutions obtained by Dalarsson et al. by using the simulation tool CST. An square-SRR/strip-wire unit element was designed, with real part of relative permittivity equal to -1.96 and real part of relative permeability equal to -1.01. Such unit elements were orderly structured to produce a NIM structure. Furthermore, a positive-index material (PIM) structure was produced by reversing the sign of the material properties of the NIM. Both the results for the step- and graded-index interfaces have shown to possess backward-wave propagation for a normal incidence angle. The graded-index interface profiles have a more smooth and continuous wave propagation between the materials, which counteracts the effects of discontinuous material transitions present in step-index interface profiles. However, because the results of the present study were considerably affected by unwanted field effects, the analytical solutions are only qualitatively validated, and not validated in terms of their numerical accuracy.

A Wide-Area Perspective on Power System Operation and Dynamics

Gardner, Robert Matthew 23 April 2008 (has links)
Classically, wide-area synchronized power system monitoring has been an expensive task requiring significant investment in utility communications infrastructures for the service of relatively few costly sensors. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the viability of power system monitoring from very low voltage levels (120 V). Challenging the accepted norms in power system monitoring, the document will present the use of inexpensive GPS time synchronized sensors in mass numbers at the distribution level. In the past, such low level monitoring has been overlooked due to a perceived imbalance between the required investment and the usefulness of the resulting deluge of information. However, distribution level monitoring offers several advantages over bulk transmission system monitoring. First, practically everyone with access to electricity also has a measurement port into the electric power system. Second, internet access and GPS availability have become pedestrian commodities providing a communications and synchronization infrastructure for the transmission of low-voltage measurements. Third, these ubiquitous measurement points exist in an interconnected fashion irrespective of utility boundaries. This work offers insight into which parameters are meaningful to monitor at the distribution level and provides applications that add unprecedented value to the data extracted from this level. System models comprising the entire Eastern Interconnection are exploited in conjunction with a bounty of distribution level measurement data for the development of wide-area disturbance detection, classification, analysis, and location routines. The main contributions of this work are fivefold: the introduction of a novel power system disturbance detection algorithm; the development of a power system oscillation damping analysis methodology; the development of several parametric and non-parametric power system disturbance location methods, new methods of power system phenomena visualization, and the proposal and mapping of an online power system event reporting scheme. / Ph. Spacecraft dynamic analysis and correlation with test results : Shock environment analysis of LISA Pathfinder at VESTA test bed

Kunicka, Beata Iwona January 2017 (has links)
The particular study case in this thesis is the shock test performed on the LISA Pathfinder satellite conducted in a laboratory environment on a dedicated test bed: Vega Shock Test Apparatus (VESTA). This test is considered fully representative to study shock levels produced by fairing jettisoning event at Vega Launcher Vehicle, which induces high shock loads towards the satellite. In the frame of this thesis, some transient response analyses have been conducted in MSC Nastran, and a shock simulation tool for the VESTA test configuration has been developed. The simulation tool is based on Nastran Direct Transient Response Analysis solver (SOL 109), and is representative of the upper composite of Vega with the LISA Pathfinder coupled to it. Post-processing routines of transient response signals were conducted in Dynaworks which served to calculate Shock Response Spectra (SRS). The simulation tool is a model of forcing function parameters for transient analysis which adequately correlates with the shock real test data, in order to understand how the effect of shock generated by the launcher is seen in the satellite and its sub-systems. Since available computation resources are limited the parameters for analysis were optimised for computation time, file size, memory capacity,  and model complexity. The forcing function represents a release of the HSS clamp band which is responsible for fairing jettisoning, thus the parameters which were studied are mostly concerning the modelling of this event. Among many investigated, those which visibly improved SRS correlation are radial forcing function shape, implementation of axial impulse, clamp band loading geometry and refined loading scheme. Integration time step duration and analysis duration were also studied and found to improve correlation.  From each analysis, the qualifying shock environment was then derived by linear scaling in proportion of the applied preload, and considering a qualification margin of 3dB. Consecutive tracking of structural responses along shock propagation path exposed gradual changes in responses pattern and revealed an important property that a breathing mode (n = 0) at the base of a conical Adapter translates into an axial input to the spacecraft. The parametrisation itself was based on responses registered at interfaces located in near-field (where the clamp band is located and forcing function is applied) and medium-field with respect to the shock event location. Following shock propagation path, the final step was the analysis of shock responses inside the satellite located in a far-field region, which still revealed a very good correlation of results. Thus, it can be said that parametrisation process was adequate, and the developed shock simulation tool can be qualified. However, due to the nature of shock, the tool cannot fully replace VESTA laboratory test, but can support shock assessment process and preparation to such test. In the last part of the thesis, the implementation of some finite element model improvements is investigated. Majority of the panels in spacecraft interior exhibited shock over-prediction due to finite element model limitation. Equipment units modelled as lump masses rigidly attached with RBE2 elements to the panel surface are a source of such local over-predictions. Thus, some of the units were remodelled and transient responses were reinvestigated. It was found that remodelling with either solid elements, or lump mass connected to RBE3 element and reinforced by RBE2 element, can significantly improve local transient responses. This conclusion is in line with conclusions found in ECSS Shock Handbook.

Etude expérimentale et numérique des oscillations hydrodynamiques en milieux poreux partiellement saturés / Experimental and numerical study of hydrodynamic oscillations in partially saturated porous media

Wang, Yunli 16 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating experimentally, analytically and numerically, the consequences of hydrodynamic variations and oscillations with high temporal variability in partially saturated porous media. The problems investigated in this work involve “free surfaces” both outside and inside the porous media, the free surface being defined as the “atmospheric” water pressure isosurface (Pwater = Patm). The laboratory experiments studied in this work are, respectively: Lateral imbibition in a dry sand box with significant capillary effects; Transmission of oscillations of the free surface through a vertical sand box placed in a small wave canal (IMFT, Toulouse); Dynamics of free surface oscillations and wave propagation in a large wave canal (HYDRALAB, Barcelona), partially covered with sand, with measurements of both open water and groundwater levels, and of sand topography (erosion / deposition). For theoretical studies, we have developed linearized analytical solutions. Here is a sample problem that was treated analytically in this work: The linearized equation of Dupuit-Boussinesq (DB) for transient free surface flow, assuming horizontal flow and instantaneous wetting/drainage of the unsaturated zone: forced oscillations, wave transmission and dissipation through a rectangular sandbox. We also developed a weakly nonlinear solution of the Dupuit-Boussinesq equation to study the sudden imbibition (temporal monitoring of the wetting front). We have studied the different types of transient flow problems related to the experiments cited above by numerical simulation. In particular, we have simulated unsaturated or partially saturated transient flows in vertical cross-section, using a computer code (BIGFLOW 3D) which solves a generalized version of Richards’ equation. Thus, using the Richards / BIGFLOW 3D model, we have studied numerically the experiment of unsaturated imbibition in a dry sand (IMFT sandbox), and then, with the same model, we have also studied the partially saturated wave propagation experiment in the large Barcelona wave canal (HYDRALAB laboratory), focusing on the sloping sandy beach, with coupling between the micro-porous zone (sand) and the “macro-porous” zone (open water). To interpret the results of the latter experiment and compare them to simulations, we use several methods of signal analyzis and signal processing, such as: Fourier analysis, discrete multi-resolution wavelets (Daubechies), auto and cross-correlation functions. These methods are combined with pre-filtering methods to estimate trends and residuals (moving averages; discrete wavelet analyses). This signal analyzis has allowed us to interpret and quantify water propagation phenomena through a sandy beach. To sum up, different modeling approaches, combined with model calibration procedures, were applied to transient nonlinear coupled flow problems. These approaches have allowed us to reproduce globally the water content distributions and water level propagation in the different configurations studied in this work.

Studies on nonlinear mechanical wave behavior to characterize cement based materials and its durability

Eiras Fernández, Jesús Nuño 10 October 2016 (has links)
[EN] The test for determining the resonance frequencies has traditionally been used to investigate the mechanical integrity of concrete cores, to assess the conformity of concrete constituents in different accelerated durability tests, and to ascertain constitutive properties such as the elastic modulus and the damping factor. This nondestructive technique has been quite appealed for evaluation of mechanical properties in all kinds of durability tests. The damage evolution is commonly assessed from the reduction of dynamic modulus which is produced as a result of any cracking process. However, the mechanical behavior of concrete is intrinsically nonlinear and hysteretic. As a result of a hysteretic stress-strain behavior, the elastic modulus is a function of the strain. In dynamic tests, the nonlinearity of the material is manifested by a decrease of the resonance frequencies, which is inversely proportional to the excitation amplitude. This phenomenon is commonly referred as fast dynamic effect. Once the dynamic excitation ceases, the material undergoes a relaxation process whereby the elastic modulus is restored to that at rest. This phenomenon is termed as slow dynamics. These phenomena (fast and slow dynamics) find their origin in the internal friction of the material. Therefore, in cement-based materials, the presence of microcracks and interfaces between its constituents plays an important role in the material nonlinearity. In the context of the assessment of concrete durability, the damage evolution is based on the increase of hysteresis, as a result of any cracking process. In this thesis three different nondestructive techniques are investigated, which use impacts for exciting the resonant frequencies. The first technique consists in determining the resonance frequencies over a range of impact forces. The technique is termed Nonlinear Impact Resonant Acoustic Spectroscopy (NIRAS). It consists in ascertaining the downward resonant frequency shift that the material undergoes upon increasing excitation amplitude. The second technique consists in investigating the nonlinear behavior by analyzing the signal corresponding to a single impact. This is, to determine the instantaneous frequency, amplitude and attenuation variations corresponding to a single impact event. This technique is termed as Nonlinear Resonant Acoustic Single Impact Spectroscopy (NSIRAS). Two techniques are proposed to extract the nonlinear behavior by analyzing the instantaneous frequency variations and attenuation over the signal ring down. The first technique consists in discretizing the frequency variation with time through a Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) based analysis. The second technique consists of a least-squares fit of the vibration signals to a model that considers the frequency and attenuation variations over time. The third technique used in this thesis can be used for on-site evaluation of structures. The technique is based on the Dynamic Acousto- Elastic Test (DAET). The variations of elastic modulus as derived through NIRAS and NSIRAS techniques provide an average behavior and do not allow derivation of the elastic modulus variations over one vibration cycle. Currently, DAET technique is the only one capable to investigate the entire range of nonlinear phenomena in the material. Moreover, unlike other DAET approaches, this study uses a continuous wave source as probe. The use of a continuous wave allows investigation of the relative variations of the elastic modulus, as produced by an impact. Moreover, the experimental configuration allows one-sided inspection. (2016).
