Comparative research of WhatsApp and Telegram by using heuristic principles

Palisetti, Venkata Siva Sai Kumar, Seelam, Nikhitha Priyadarsini January 2022 (has links)
Over the last few years, text messaging has taken the domination among young adults. Messaging via phones has a wide range of both, human and social factors. These Instant Messaging [IM] applications also offer features other than just texting and for example, sending documents, photos, videos, links and more. All these features and attributes are making people pull towards these IM applications more and more. Despite having these features, people expect more from these IM applications, which leads these IM applications to compete with each other by providing more features or modifying the existing features. This competition to be the better application amongst the IM applications has led us to do a research study on which applications have better user experience through a survey evaluation. Background: Messaging through phones got a lot easier when platforms like iMessage, Telegram, WhatsApp, etc., were introduced to people. WhatsApp and Telegram gained popularity over iMessages as iMessages was limited only to IOS. So, technically people preferred WhatsApp and Telegram over iMessages. In order, to deduct which application is preferred among WhatsApp and Telegram, a survey evaluation is done based on Usability Heuristics. Thus, the title of the thesis is “Comparative research of WhatsApp and Telegram by using heuristic principles.” Objectives: The prime objective of the thesis is to compare both the applications, WhatsApp, and Telegram and to find which application has followed the principles of Usability most. The comparison between these two applications is done via a survey evaluation and the results will be noted. Methods: The method that has been chosen and used for comparison is survey evaluation. The survey will be done via google forms, and the questions of the study are based on HCI principles. The survey will have a total of 10 questions. Approximately of 45 users will be given the questionnaire google form to fill out. Results: The results from the survey will be collected and noted. The results are examined and the application that has the better user experience will be found. Conclusion: From the study and the survey, it is concluded that WhatsApp has a better user experience than Telegram.

This study was developed in a blended learning context in which there was an experiment on using WhatsApp, a largely used and well known tool for communication, as a means for fostering spontaneous dialogues among learners of English as a foreign language. Based on a sociocultural perspective and considering that learning happens through interaction mediated by sociocultural artifacts (Vygotsky, 1978), this work aims at understanding how the process of learning is mediated as students chat on WhatsApp. More specifically, it aims at analyzing students’ production of the foreign language as they interact using the language they learn through the group on WhatsApp and how it could, in some way, contribute with their learning process. Based on the data and the students’ opinions, it was found that WhatsApp can be an effective resource to engage students in producing the language they learn so that they have more opportunities for hypothesis testing, noticing gaps in their knowledge of the foreign language as well as engage them in metatalk (SWAIN,1985,1995,2005). Moreover, through their chatting, it was possible to notice that learners scaffolded each other and searched for means of maintaining themselves engaged in the dialogue by searching words in online dictionaries, using the first language as a support or using conversational tactics for negotiating meaning (LONG, 1983, 1996), what allowed students to get engaged in conversations and ile maintaining themselves engaged in conversations and both ask for and give support on the process of producing and learning the foreign language.

Esoko and WhatsApp Communication in Ghana : Mobile Services such as Esoko and WhatsApp in Reshaping Interpersonal Digital Media Communication in Ghana

Cynthia, Salkovic January 2015 (has links)
The predominant use of mobile media such as SMS and MIM across various sectors in Ghana is incontrovertibly influencing and reshaping interpersonal communications. This paper looked at the use of the Esoko SMS and WhatsApp MIM platforms and how the use of these two dominant platforms are enhancing and reshaping digital communication in the rural and urban Ghana respectively, as barriers of socioeconomic factors limits the use of sophisticated technologies in the rural setting. This is done by employing Madianou and Miller's notion of polymedia” to draw on the moral, social and the emotional use of mobile media in enacting interpersonal relationships and communications whilst keeping in focus the recursive repercussions.

He uses the studies of Marcuschi Conversational Analysis (1986) concerning knife-to-face conversation and its changes in the virtual environment, Grice's Theory of Implication and conversational maxims (1975), and Crystal (2005) studies on pressure pragmatics of users to gain time in the conversation, in addition to the concept of Prensky (2001) on the digital immigrant-like digital immigrant behavior. It also uses elements from Karmiloff-Smith's Representational Redescription Theory (1992), Fairclough's notion of intertextuality (2006), and Xavier's work on digital rhetoric (2011). It adopts Kozinets' (1988) Netnography concept for searching forums, chats, discussion groups adapted to applications such as WhatsApp and studies on the centrality of language in Barton e Lee (2015) technology. Finally, from the works of Caiado and Morais (2014) on intentional transgression of mobile users and Cunha (2008) in relation to the application of the analyzed groups of the concept of discourse mentioned Bakhtin (2006) to build and support their arguments within groups. The research argues that the WhatsApp messenger works as a textual highway through which, in real time, various statements, whose construction processes use different written and image elements for the delivery of measured messages by computer on platforms of mobile use, are carried out in real time.

Community, Crowdsourcing, and Commerce: WhatsApp Groups for Agriculture in Kenya

David, Cailean 02 December 2020 (has links)
WhatsApp’s growing presence in the developing world has led to a grassroots movement of messaging groups designed to serve relevant needs for small scale farmers in Kenya. These groups provide the means for as many as 256 members to ask questions, share experiences and solutions, gain access to information, and access markets for their products. This research project examines the use of these WhatsApp groups for agriculture in Kenya. The project seeks to understand the existing barriers to participation, and the use, benefits, and shortcomings of these groups for their members. Research findings indicated that farmers’ overall access to smart phones is a substantial barrier to their participation in groups for agriculture, and these barriers are expectedly more difficult for the poorest and most vulnerable (in which intersectional poverty creates additional barriers). However, while each group can vary significantly, members report that WhatsApp groups as a whole overwhelmingly benefit their livelihoods and practice. Systemic and societal change occurs when the experiences and successes of one individual are shared with a larger group – leading to rapid and shared prosperity. As each individual learns a new skill, technique, or input, the group must also learn and benefit from that knowledge. WhatsApp provides the means and the platform for this type of information exchange to occur at scale, and with individuals who would otherwise be unlikely to communicate. This research project examines the emerging use of grassroots WhatsApp groups as a potential example of this positive and inclusive approach to extension and development in agricultural communities.

Santos, Gil Robson de Oliveira 07 December 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This report aims to present the action-research results, took place at the CEJBN/SE, enclosing the usage of the cellphone application designed to instantaneous messages exchange – WhatsApp – as a strategy to the students of the 9º grade of the elementary school to develop competences in order to the opinion genre article text producing practise. The research is based on Koch, Boff and Marinello (2009/2014) studies concerning the work with the textual genres, beginning from systematic daily actions sequence: Soares (2002) about literacies on Cyberculture and Rojo (2015) about multiliteracy. The methodology employed is proposed by Dolz and Schneuwly, recognized as Didactic Sequence. The justification for the fulfiment of this research is reasoned by the range of teaching actions amlplification needs which absorbs the disposable digital technologies, both as alongside the student literacy on the cyberculture scope and, mainly, as their competence on the written modality upgrading. The final product resulting the action-research is registred in a Pedagogical Notebook that aims to socialize the didactic actions experiences with other elementar school portuguese language teachers.
