Collaborative Learning for Interprofessional Healthcare Practice : Students’ perceptions of learning through the collaborative creation and use of wikis in a problem based learning environment

Asserhed, Björn January 2016 (has links)
Introduction: Wikis are multiuser platforms that have been used with positive results for learning in higher education. As knowledge artefacts they include both semiotic and material aspects that could potentially be realized through collaborative learning and the assessment of interprofessional and problem based learning using portfolios. Purpose: The aim of the present study is to investigate students’ perceptions of learning through the the collaborative creation and use of wikis. Method: Sixteen students from an interprofessional course module participated in the study. The thesis uses semi-structured interviews with a qualitative phenomenographic approach. Results: The informants’ perceptions of learning through the collaborative creation and use of wikis are described as a four category hierarchy that represents the outcome space: Course task oriented compilation of texts Preparatory exam compendium Representative knowledge artefact Knowledge artefact for future professional practice Conclusion: Students’ different perceptions of learning through the collaborative creation and use of wikis as presented as the outcome space can be understood as variations of how they perceive the resulting product, the process involved and the orientation of the wiki work, from a surface and task oriented work to deeper contextual learning. Well designed, wiki support problem based learning and assessment using portfolios as well as interprofessional learning for future professional practice.

Aguirre Ayala, Carlos Antonio 22 July 2021 (has links)

Adolescent Literate Identity Online: Individuals and the Discourse of a Class Wiki

McCollum, Amanda J. 10 August 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine students' representations of their literate identities in what Gee (2008) calls Discourse that developed among 105 high school students— 103 10th-grade and two 11th-grade students—using a wiki for class work, collaboration, and social interaction. The theoretical frame for the present study was drawn from of four bodies of literature. Through a reciprocal process of positioning self and others (van Langenhove & Harré, 1999), individuals come to form and display their literate identity (Heath, 1991) within a community of practice (Wenger, 1998). Their interactions reflect norms, values, and accepted ways of being within the Discourses to which they belong (Gee, 2008). Data analysis procedures employed in this study were similar to those commonly associated with qualitative data analysis. I used a recursive process of coding and searching for patterns and themes to analyze students' writing on the class wiki. Analysis of the wiki posts revealed that students employed 18 written devices within the Discourse of the wiki. In addition, within the online Discourse that emerged on the wiki, students occupied nine positions in relation to the others in the community. Findings of this study suggest that students developed a community of practice where norms for participation in the Discourse of the wiki were constructed by its members. Students represented their academic and social literate identities online through the combination of devices they used and the positions they enacted in the Discourse of the wiki.

The Effect Of Applying Wikis In An English As A Foreign Language (efl) Class In Taiwan

Chen, Yu-ching 01 January 2008 (has links)
Incorporating technology into learning has brought major benefits to learners and has greatly changed higher education. Since there is limited number of experimental research investigating the effectiveness of applying wikis, this study collected experimental data to investigate its effectiveness. The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of applying wikis in terms of students' learning outcomes, to investigate the changes regarding students' attitude towards language learning, to explore the communication channels in wikis that facilitate students' interaction in the e-learning environment as well as students' experience of using wikis. Results showed that there existed statistically significant difference between the group with and without wikis, which means the group applying wikis performed better in listening and reading abilities. When compared with the non-wiki group, the wiki group had a more favorable attitude towards the class, their English ability improvement, and cooperative learning. Moreover, the students agreed that wikis helped them complete their assignment, they felt comfortable in the wiki environment, and it was easy for them to use wikis. From the experiences of using wikis shared by the students, they provided recommendations about the interface and the edit functions in the wiki environment. Their interaction with other team members and the course material increased but they expressed that the main interaction was through face-to-face and instant message software. Finally, the wiki environment allowed students to fulfill their role duties, cooperate, negotiate, manage their contribution, and modeling from each other.

Algorithm Visualization: The State of the Field

Cooper, Matthew Lenell 01 May 2007 (has links)
We report on the state of the field of algorithm visualization, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Computer science educators seem to find algorithm and data structure visualizations attractive for their classrooms. Educational research shows that some are effective while many are not. Clearly, then, visualizations are difficult to create and use right. There is little in the way of a supporting community, and many visualizations are downright poor. Topic distribution is heavily skewed towards simple concepts with advanced topics receiving little to no attention. We have cataloged nearly 400 visualizations available on the Internet. We have a wiki-based catalog which includes availability, platform, strengths and weaknesses, responsible personnel and institutions, and other data about each visualization. We have developed extraction and analysis tools to gather statistics about the corpus of visualizations. Based on analysis of this collection, we point out areas where improvements may be realized and suggest techniques for implementing such improvements. We pay particular attention to the free and open source software movement as a model which the visualization community may do well to emulate, from both a software engineering perspective and a community-building standpoint. / Master of Science

A Secondary English Teacher's Use of New Literacies with Voice and Struggling Writers

Martin, Jenny M. 27 August 2014 (has links)
Voice is an integral part of writing instruction, and over half of state writing assessments include voice on scoring rubrics; yet, there is a dearth of research on voice and writing instruction with adolescents. Increasingly new literacies and digital tools are being used in the high school English classroom but with relatively little known about how these tools can teach voice during writing instruction. This qualitative single-case study examined how a public school, ninth-grade English teacher used new literacies to develop voice in students' writing and participants' perception of these instructional choices. The sample included the teacher and 14 students, and data collection included classroom observations, participant interviews, motivation inventories, reflective logs, state writing scores, students' writing folders, and wiki documents. An iterative process of inductive and deductive analysis led to key findings about instructional planning, purposeful writing assignments, teacher feedback, and participant response. Findings indicate that further attention is needed with respect to text structure development, writing pedagogy, and voice in writing; teachers' response to students' writing in digital environments; and motivation and adolescent writing. / Ph. No. of bitstreams: 1 Jose B Damasceno Junior.pdf: 1891815 bytes, checksum: 03363a3789637e84b97afceb57e7fcb7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-26 / The subject lessons learned in projects has been more and more relevant nowadays, considering the adoption on institutions and a growing number of academic researches. Models for lessons learned management have been developed, supported by processes and tools such as social software (eg, Wikis, Blogs, Microblogging ...). Considering the software adoption problem or the lack of processes and tools for managing lessons learned in institutions and carrying on Rose’s research project (2015) whom developed a model for management of lessons learned, the Target 2.0, this study’s main objective is to validate such a model in action on a public safety government institution. A Wiki page has been developed to promote the management of lessons learned in a project at this institution. This work was developed based on the Design Science Research (DSR) paradigm and the Technical Action Research (TAR) method. The results suggests increments to the validated artifact on the lessons learned list of processes during the phases of the project’s life cycle, while the usefulness and ease of use of the Wiki were recognized by those involved they also pointed to the positive effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes and project activities. This research presents itself as unique and useful. The uniqueness is because the Target 2.0 had not yet been validated on the field, so it is unprecedented. Its usefulness is shown by the fact that the public safety government institution will make use of this Wiki in the upcoming issues of the Quality Award project. The contribution to the theory happens as it is confirmed that investing into the adoption of tools and techniques is essential, and that it is also possible to innovate in the Brazilian’s public safety sector by using good practices, that keeping people aligned is fundamental to the lessons learned management in projects. It shows that: 1. the implementation phase of the project life cycle allows for a greater collection of lessons learned; 2. the perception of the existence of new tools can promote greater social collaboration of information about projects; and 3. beyond the importance of raising awareness, a lessons learned policy is needed. The practical contribution lies on the adoption of a model of lessons learned management in projects, which was pioneered in that institution.
