Determinants of financial market development : the role of institutions

Madheu, Violet 10 1900 (has links)
This study aims to determine the main drivers of financial market development, with a specific interest in the relationship between the stock and bank credit markets, as proxies of financial market development, and the role of institutional quality, in ten African countries for the period of 2009 to 2017. A number of econometric techniques such as the General Methods of Moments (GMM) model for dynamic panel data, autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) bound testing approach to cointegration, vector error correction model (VECM), and granger causality tests were applied in the study. We further developed a composite index for both financial market development and institutional quality using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). The results demonstrate that institutional quality, as well as infrastructure development, economic growth, and inflation are the main determinants of financial market development in our sample of ten African countries. Findings from the ARDL bound testing approach confirm the existence of a long-run association between institutional quality and financial market development. Although financial market development has no effect on economic growth, institutional quality was found to have a positive and highly significant effect on economic growth. Furthermore, employing the Granger causality test, we found uni-directional granger causality between financial market development and institutional quality, implying that financial market development is a significant causal factor for institutional quality. In consideration of these findings, policy formulation by governments should be designed towards enhancing financial and institutional quality development, and this can be possibly achieved by effective enforcement of law to encourage compliance, while simultaneously eliminating corruption and other institutional hindrances to development / Lolu cwaningo luhlose ukuveza izinhlaka ezingabaphembeleli abasemqoka ekuthuthukisweni kwezimakethe zezimali, kugxilwe kakhulu kubudlelwano obuphakathi kwesitoko kanye nezimakethe zamabhangi ahlinzekana ngezikweletu, njengabancedisi abathuthukisa izimakethe zezimali, kanye nendima emayelana nezinga leziko, emazweni ase-Afrika ayishumi esikhathini esiphakathi kuka 2009 ukufikela ku 2017. Hojer Lama, Nima January 2017 (has links)
1 Abstract The thesis deals primarily with the Tibetan text of The Genealogy of Ya-ngal Family of Dolpo, which is an important document concerning the history of Western Tibet. The text itself has never been fully translated and there are also different manuscript versions of it, which contain partially different reading. The various manuscript versions have been compared and the critical edition of the text has been established. This formed the basis for translation of the entire text into English. This core of the dissertation is preceded by necessary background information on the region of Dolpo, its history and a significance of the role the Ya-ngal family played in it. Second chapter contains the translation of the Genealogy with detailed comments in the footnotes. The entire text has been divided into chapters, whose titles are given in the square brackets indicating thus that they are missing in the original text. The third chapter focuses mainly on the specific abbreviations of written words used across the entire text of the Genealogy, since there is hardly any literature in western languages dealing with this topic. This part is introduced by brief linguistic description of the Dolpo dialect of Tibetan. It is followed by general introduction of the abbreviating styles in Tibetan scriptures. The...

IDENTIFYING HUMANITY THROUGH NARRATIVE: A PEDAGOGICAL APPROACH TO YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE.

Ayla Nyriese Wilder (15360418) 28 April 2023 (has links)

Young Adult (YA) literature is a subject that is often unclear. There is no clear definition

of what YA literature is. However, most YA literature has several things in common. First, it

includes characters between the ages of 12 and 25. Second, it fits into the publication genre of

YA literature. Third, it features diverse characters experiencing themes surrounding identity. It is

this theme of identity on which this essay focuses. Narrowed down to the subject of narrative

identity, we look at how the events of someone’s life makes up their personality and the

correlation between narrative identity and YA literature. Narrative identity can be seen within

novels, and it is also impacted by the stories we read. The text Illuminae by Jay Kristoff and

Amie Kauffman is used to further examine this framework, alongside frameworks of

posthumanism and technology. The ideas of technology, narrative identity, and YA literature are

all combined in a representative assignment that is a podcast. This podcast assignment asks

students to examine these intersections utilizing technology, and to use multimodality to

communicate their findings. The essay concludes by discussing possible pitfalls, such as political

climate, breadth of topics, and student preconceptions. However, it is concluded that YA is a

vital part of literature and society that allows for an empathetic approach to how we interact with

one another.

Hali ya Ufundishaji wa Kiswahili Nchini Misri Historia na Maendeleo

Salah, Alaa 05 June 2023 (has links)
This article discuss the uses and teaching of the Swahili language in Egypt. Today, the North African country considers Swahili language to be one of the most important languages in Africa; which is used as a lingua franca even by fellow Nile River countries. There is a relatively long history of Swahili language teaching; beginning in 1967 with the establishment of the Department of African Languages, within the Faculty of Languages and Translation at the Al-Azhar University. Since then, many students have learned Swahili and become either Swahili teachers; editors in Egyptian Radio for East African countries; or Swahili language translators at Al-Azhar centres. The establishment of other departments at three other universities - namely, Ain Shams University, Cairo University, and most recently Aswan University - has helped to grow and develop Swahili language teaching. Egypt continues to take steps to advance the teaching and use of Swahili language with the aim of strengthening relations between it and several East and Central African countries, where it remains the main language of communication.

Breaking Barriers : How Young Adult Literature is Paving the Way for LGBT Representation

Ascariz, Camila January 2024 (has links)
The evolution and diversification of Young Adult literature (YA) in the last two decades have brought about significant changes, particularly in the representation of LGBT characters. Tropes have always been a staple in literature, but their use in YA has taken on a unique significance when it comes to LGBT representation. These tropes have developed in parallel with the political landscape of the USA and the rise of LGBT rights. In this context, the analysis of three popular YA series, Percy Jackson and The Olympians, The Mortal Instruments, and The Raven Cycle, and their respective sequels and spin-offs, becomes crucial. By examining the use of tropes and the treatment of LGBT characters in these series, we can better understand the changes that have occurred over time and the commonalities and differences among them. Moreover, this analysis will also shed light on aspects outside the novels that have contributed to these developments. While similar patterns emerge in all three series, each one handles LGBT topics differently, depending on the time of publication. Finally, we will also explore the current state of publishing and the role that communities play in shaping these popular series. By examining these issues, we can gain a better understanding of the role that literature plays in shaping our perceptions of LGBT individuals and the broader social context in which these works are produced.

Spirituelle Bedürfnisse am Lebensende: eine praktisch-theologische Studie zu Patienten mit ambulanter palliativmedizinischer Betreuung / Spiritual needs at the end of life: a practical theological study of outpatient palliative care patients

Treis, Judith Emma 01 1900 (has links)
Text in German, with German, English and Southern Sotho summaries / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 149-153) / Die praktisch-theologische Studie untersucht spirituelle Bedürfnisse von ambulanten Palliativpatienten. / This practical theological study examined the spiritual needs of outpatient palliative care patients. Focus group discussions were conducted with outpatient palliative care teams. They were asked about their experiences and observations. Theoretical foundations of spirituality and palliative care formed the framework for the evaluation of empirical research by using qualitative content analysis. Findings show that recognition of spiritual needs in patients poses a challenge to the majority of team members, as well as insecurities and problems in dealing with them. The observed spirituality is predominantly ecclesiastical and based on Christian elements such as prayers, faith and accompaniment by pastors. Team members address encounters, "being" and music as spiritual dimensions. There are also patients who have no spiritual needs. In future, practical theology could serve as a needs-based provision of competences, so that employees of health systems can be empowered to perceive, reflect on and adequately respond to the spiritual needs of their patients. / Boithuto jwa thutobomodimo bo tlhatlhobile ditlhokwa tsa semoya tsa balwetse ba tlhokomelo ya malwetse a bofelelo ya kalafo ya balwetse ba kwa ntle. A pedagogy for technology education : an indigenous perspective

Maluleke, Richard 07 1900 (has links)
The promotion of Afrocentric education is a current issue in Africa. This study aimed to establish the role of indigenous knowledge (IK) in the development of Senior Phase learners' design skills in Technology Education (TE). The study was guided by the constructivist theory, which is based on the assumption that prior learning can play a role in learning. When learning new things in a TE class, learners can benefit from their daily experiences in deriving meaning. Three schools from the Vhembe district in Limpopo Province participated in this study. The purposive sampling technique was used to select Technology teachers, heads of departments, TE specialists, learners and parents from these schools to participate in the study. Data were collected by way of individual and focus group interviews, participant observations and the analysis of documents and artifacts. The findings revealed that IK can increase learners' understanding and acquisition of design skills. However, this study revealed that the integration of IK can be hampered by factors such as the teachers' inability to use indigenous artifacts, the use of unvaried assessment methods, and a negative attitude towards culturally relevant pedagogy and IK. This study ultimately contributed an indigenous knowledge-based design process (IKBDP). Unlike the current conventional approach, an IKBDP has the potential to transform the teaching of Technology, thereby giving recognition to IK and accommodating learners from indigenous backgrounds. / Ku yisa emahlweni dyondzo yo vona swilo hi tihlo ra Xiafrika, i mhaka leyi nga le mahlweni eAfrika.
