A contractor-driven stakeholder relationship management framework for Botswana's construction industry

Poor stakeholder management has been identified as a salient contributor to this challenge. To this end, various stakeholder management (SM) frameworks, models and methodologies have been developed. Nevertheless, the increasing incidence of project failure and abandonment in the Botswana construction industry indicates significant underperformance of these SM methodologies. A cursory appraisal of SM models highlights the linearity of the stakeholder relationship management (SRM) curve, i.e. between the client, consultants and contractors, with SRM responsibilities being domiciled with the client or their representative in most cases. Also, the dynamics associated with changes in stakeholder attributes during project delivery are not catered for by extant SM and relationship management models. In addition, extant SM models focus on the relationship between the project stakeholders on the one hand and the external stakeholders on the other, and others cater for project stakeholders alone. This implies that the models currently deployed for SM in the Botswana construction context remain defective. Contracting organisations (contractors) have been blamed for their inability to manage relationships with projects and external stakeholders during project delivery. Yet, these entities are not at the epicentre of SRM on construction projects. This study provides answers to the gaps highlighted. As its central objective, this study set out to develop and validate a contractor-driven stakeholder relationship management framework (CSRMF) for the Botswana construction industry. The emergent framework which leverages on the attributes of the customer relationship model (CRM) overcomes the shortcomings mentioned previously. An interpretivist philosophical paradigm was adopted in this qualitative case study research study based on pre-determined case selection criteria. Owing to the need to attain analytic generalisation through adherence to replication logic, a multi-case study research design was utilised. Six contractor organisations categorised according to scale and operating within Gaborone were selected. The unit of analysis centred on the relationship between the contracting organisations and other project stakeholders on selected projects being procured and delivered under a diverse range of contracting strategies. Data was collected through a sequential multi-method approach in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with project managers representing these construction contracting organisations on the selected projects. To enable replication, care was taken to select two contracting organisations per level – large, medium and small according to prevalent grades. Samples across the different sizes of the contractors allowed for better generalisability. Relevant projects and organisational documents were reviewed. Furthermore, data from the various stages was analysed using the qualitative content analysis technique. The findings of the study show that most of the contractors in Botswana related to their project stakeholders without a model or framework when handling relationship management with project stakeholders. These findings are a reflection of the small, medium and large construction contractors in the Botswana construction industry. There was further indication that the small, medium and large contractors had a way of managing stakeholder relationships and resolving conflicts, and thus the level of experience and knowledge within the contracting firm had a significant influence on how they managed their project stakeholder relationships in the course of project procurement and delivery. In addition, the study findings demonstrate that the nature of contracting strategy had a significant influence on how various categories of contractors related to their stakeholders on construction projects. The traditional method was found to be the main procurement strategy used in the Botswana construction industry, and this approach was fairly rigid to implement effective contractor-driven stakeholder relationship management. Other procurement strategies, such as design-and-build, and construction management are used in Botswana with their positive and negative impacts on contractors’ capability to manage their project stakeholder relationships and related matters effectively. Further evaluation of the findings led to the identification of key success factors for CSRMF development to foster effective contractor-stakeholder relationship management. These key success factors are effective communication, collaboration, engagement and cooperation among clients and contractors and consultants’ commitment; employee (stakeholder) engagement and satisfaction and capacity building; in-depth understanding of all project stakeholders and their importance and influence; and strategies to manage their relationship effectively in the course of project design, procurement and delivery. Based on the evaluation of formulated propositions and analysis of empirical data and results tested in this study, the findings also support the following analytical generalisations: the construction contracting organisations in Botswana do not have any SRM frameworks in place for engaging with stakeholders in their different projects; contractors in Botswana recognise the need to do better in managing their project stakeholder relationships; and there is an apparent gap in technical skills and limited ability of contractors to manage relationships with project stakeholders. Premised on the findings, a contractor-driven stakeholder relationship management framework was developed. The CSRMF was validated by two focus groups, namely sampled project managers from the semi-structured interviews, and relevant professionals and other academics in the industry. The validation was done to assess the relevance of the CSRMF in their management of relations. The CSRMF will provide guidance for bridging the gaps identified. It will be adopted and utilised by contractors to achieve efficiencies in the management of relationships with stakeholders, thus saving time and costs and securing improved quality and, most of all, client satisfaction. / Volgens die literatuur misluk die meeste projekte in Botswana. Talle raamwerke, modelle en metodologieë gemik op doeltreffende bestuur van belanghebbendes (BB) is as oplossing vir hierdie probleem voorgestel. Dat al hierdie BB-metodologieë egter gebrekkig is, blyk uit ʼn toename in die aantal mislukte projekte in die konstruksiebedryf wat laat vaar is. ʼn Oppervlakkige ondersoek van die BB-modelle het aan die lig gebring dat die belanghebbendeverhoudingsbestuur- (BVB) kromme afgeplat is. Hierdie kromme gee ʼn aanduiding van die verhouding tussen die kliënt, konsultante en kontrakteurs. Belanghebbendeverhoudingsbestuur berus meestal by kliënte of hulle verteenwoordigers. Frontline employee service quality: antecedents to enhance employee service quality in a South African retail bank

Abstract in English, Zulu and Sothern Sotho / South African banks need to attract and retain customers in a highly competitive environment. Within this environment, the service quality of banks has been noted as an ongoing pressing issue. With all major banks embracing the technological revolution and offering similar financial services, the service quality offered through frontline employees has become a means to attain a competitive advantage. While a substantial body of research demonstrates the importance of service quality and identifies its dimensions, there is a lack of research specifically focusing on the antecedents for frontline employee service quality. This study set out to investigate the extent to which internal service quality, service climate and frontline employee satisfaction contribute to frontline employee service quality in a South African retail bank. With the aid of a structured questionnaire, a cross-sectional internet-based survey research design was applied to collect information from frontline employees pertaining to four constructs. From the full population of 8 720 frontline employees, 581 completed responses were received during the main study, and empirically tested with the aid of descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis. The findings culminate in a multivariate regression model indicating that service climate is not a significant predictor of frontline employee service quality, whereas frontline employee satisfaction and internal service quality are, with internal service quality being the larger predictor. Drawing from these findings, ten recommendations are made to improve frontline employee service quality in a retail bank. / Amabhange aseNingizimu Afrika adinga ukuheha futhi agcine amakhasimende endaweni enokuncintisana okukhulu. Deras narrativa och litterära funktioner i böckerna relateras till deras representation och funktion i arabisk kultur och i ungdomsfantasy. Mieke Bals klassifikation av roller i en narrativ cykel används i analysen. Resultatet är att jinnen har en stark koppling till den klassiska bilden av en jinn i arabisk litteratur och kultur, men att några detaljer skiljer sig. Mest framträdande är jinnens entydigt goda egenskaper och funktioner i berättelsen. Slutsatsen är att trilogin ligger tydligt i linje med annan fantasylitteratur för ungdomar, men att jinnen har en unik roll som hjälpare eller god kraft. Den får i och med det en tydlig pedagogisk roll, i linje med barn- och ungdomslitteraturen. / The jinn is a frequently occurring entity in Arabic culture and literature since pre-Islamic times. The purpose of this literature study is to examine how the jinn are described and represented in the Thunderbird trilogy by Sonia Nimr. Their narrative and literary functions in the books relate to their representation and function in Arab culture and in young adult fantasy. Mieke Bal’s classification of roles in the narrative cycle is used in the analysis. The result is that the jinn bears a strong resemblance to the classical image of a jinn in Arabic literature and culture, but that some details differ. Most prominent are the jinn’s unambiguously good qualities and functions in the story. The conclusion is that the trilogy is clearly in line with other fantasy literature for young adults, but that the jinn has a unique role as a helper or as the good power. It therefore has a clear pedagogical role in line with children’s literature and Young Adult literature.

Previous studies on Cecily von Ziegesar's series Gossip Girl fail to explain the functionality of the series for the actual readers. Therefore, a discussion of the relationship between reader and text is necessary. By explaining from a literary perspective how reader and text interact, we can better understand why teen girls want to read the series and the exchanges that occur between the books and the readers. An exploration of how Gossip Girl relates to its series predecessors, like Nancy Drew, demonstrates how the popularity of Gossip Girl is not unique, but rather fits in with the established series pattern while receiving the same harsh criticism. As a result of analyzing the "bad" reputation Gossip Girl has earned, we can explicate how the series is currently seen to operate for the reader, questions left open when simply looking at series books historically. This exploration of the books as carriers of ideology examines how and if readers are invited to participate in a relationship with the text. However, simple reader-response theories only replicate a static relationship between reader and text. By also using a Deleuzo-Guattarian approach to the series, an understanding of how Gossip Girl acts as an "apparatus of capture" built on social conditions while still allowing the reader minimal agency for the channeling of energy/desiring flows can be found. These approaches work in conjunction in order to address the engagement readers experience with the Gossip Girl texts, which, in turn, help elucidate the phenomenon associated with von Ziegesar's books. / Master of Arts

Exploring aftercare support for child trafficking victims

Child trafficking is a crime committed against humanity; it is punishable by the law and can be prevented by the law. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations International Emergency Fund (UNIICEF) and the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) (2009:01), 1,2 million children are trafficked, domestically and across borders worldwide, for labour and sexual exploitation, drug trade, organ removal and illegal child adoption. The trauma of this can be so inordinate, leaving victims broken and hopeless (Frederick 2005:8-12). Although numerous studies have been conducted on the subject of human/child trafficking, it was found that little research has been conducted on the aftercare of victims. As a result, this research focused mainly on exploring and assessing aftercare support provided to victims of human trafficking, specifically children. This qualitative research found that child trafficking has serious negative effects on the victims who suffer, among others, violation of children’s rights, physical pain and psychological and emotional trauma. A society cannot function optimally when such atrocities are committed against its most innocent members who are supposed to be its future. Accordingly, adequate aftercare support, which aims at enabling and empowering victims of child trafficking to regain control over every aspect of their lives, is crucial. The 30 participants who were interviewed for this study revealed that victim identification is the initial and the most vital step towards offering victims aftercare. The next step in the offering of aftercare of victims is the rescuing of victims followed by the immediate placing of victims in transitory places of safety where their basic needs are taken care of and they are provided with instant physical and specialised psychological support. Even though participants provided details of the type of programmes currently offered in South Africa, it was found that aftercare centres, in their current state, are not sufficiently resourced to offer the appropriate support to victims of child trafficking. It is for this reason that transitional housing with long term housing assistance and programmes tailor-made for victims of child trafficking be considered. It is evident from the literature and theory that the triple challenge of poverty, inequality and unemployment perpetuates the crime of child trafficking. Therefore, as a form of long-term preventative measure, it is suggested that stakeholders, such as the Department of Basic Education (DoE), Department of Social Development (DSD) and Department of Health (DoH), focus attention on ensuring that victims of child trafficking are not denied the right to go to school and that societal norms, which propagate inequality, are discouraged. The latter can be done by teaching boy children from a young age positive masculinity, such as respecting girl children and their bodies, helping with house chores or crying when in pain. Moreover, the DoE should consider revising its curriculum and focus on teaching learners to strive to become employers and not job seekers as they are currently taught. Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Northern Sotho / Many individuals spend their working lives attempting to accrue financial resources to sustain them beyond their retirement. The challenge in professional sport is that a professional athlete’s career is often relatively short with various risks that could end it prematurely. In addition, there are various reasons why professional athletes find it challenging to transition to a vocational career after their sporting careers end. This highlights the importance for professional athletes to attain a high level of financial literacy from a young age. Actor-network theory (ANT) provided a suitable theoretical frame for this study by considering the information that could flow in a network around a professional athlete in pursuit of sound financial decisions. This study first developed a framework for the financial literacy skills required by professional athletes in pursuit of sustainable financial well-being. For this purpose, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with 27 interviewees. ANT was applied to guide the selection of interviewees from a network of influencers that could guide a professional athlete’s financial decisions. The results of these interviews and the open-ended responses provided the basis for the contributed framework. The second part of this multi-layered study was aimed at developing an artefact or research instrument to assess the financial literacy of professional athletes. Design science research provided the overarching research design for this qualitative study with a second round of interviews held with 10 interviewees from the list of interviewees consulted for the first part of the study. The 10 interviewees were purposively selected after taking the primacy of ethical considerations around research into consideration. The developed instrument may be used as it is, or adapted or extended for research beyond the limits of this study. This study could be valuable in assisting professional athletes to avoid financial distress after their sporting careers end. The study will also be of interest to sport governing bodies, the leadership of professional sports clubs, sports agents, legal advisors, accountants, tax experts, financial planners and other financial advisors to improve their understanding of the financial needs and current levels of financial literacy amongst professional athletes. / Tallose werkende mense spaar lewenslank vir hulle aftrede. Effects of forage-based diet on milk production and body reserves of dairy cows on smallholder farms in South Africa

Two studies were conducted during the current research. The first study evaluated effects of nutrient supply in standardized dairy diets on the growth and body reserves of pregnant Jersey heifers raised on communal area smallholder farms in a semi-arid zone of South Africa. Twenty-two farms with a total of 42 heifers, aged 22 to 28 months which were seven months pregnant at the beginning of the study were selected for the study. These represented the total number of farms with dairy cows in the area that were supported through a structured Dairy Development Program (DDP) of South Africa. Each farm had at least two pregnant Jersey heifers during the summer season of 2016. Each heifer was supplied 2.5 kg of a far-off (60-30 d prepartum) dry cow concentrate and increased to 3.3 kg of the same concentrate at close-up period (29-0 d prepartum). Feeding of concentrate was based on a standardized feeding program as recommended by DDP. During this study, no feeding treatment was imposed on the heifers. Eragrostis curvula hay was supplied by DDP. Daily intake of 7.2 and 5.4 kg; respectively for heifers at 60-30 d prepartum and 29-0 d prepartum was determined based on residual hay. Heifer diet (HD1) and heifer diet HD2 were therefore simulated respectively for cows at 60-30 d preparpartum and 29-0 d prepartum, respectively. Diets were assessed for nutrient composition using chemical analyses and in vitro ruminal degradation. Post ruminal nutrient absorption and animal responses were predicted using the Large Ruminant Nutrition System (LRNS) version 1.0.33 (level 1). Actual measurements of body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) were done and blood was collected and analysed for proteins monthly. Heifers’ responses were validated against the model predicted values and comparative analysis of animal performance during pregnancy was done against the National Research Council (NRC, 2001) reference values. Relative to the minimum requirement for ruminants, both HD1 and HD2 diets had relative feed value (RFV) below 144. About 35% of HD1 dietary crude protein (CP) was within the slowly degrade neutral detergent fibre (NDF) fraction which is the neutral detergent fibre insoluble crude protein (NDFICP) while 32% was not available as the acid detergent insoluble crude protein (ADICP). Equally, HD2 diet had effectively 5.2% of CP as available protein and the fraction of the slowly degraded NDF constituted only 52.3% of the effective available protein. Energy density of HD1 and HD2 were 25% and 16% higher than expected at far-off and close-up period, respectively. The intake of metabolzable protein (MP) were 32 and 25% higher than predicted for the far-off and close-up period, respectively. Supply of MP was 37 % and was higher than NRC predictions of daily requirement in Jersey cow. This allowed BW gain of 29 kg and BCS of 0.33 which was within 25th percentile for pregnant heifers. Mean concentration of blood urea at both far-off and close-up periods deviated by 25% from NRC values. Creatinine (CR) concentration was 145 μmol /L at far-off and 155 μmol /L at close-up period. The second study assessed the adequacy of two lactation diets fed to 42 primiparous Jersey cows, aged 24 to 30 months during early (1-30 d postpartum) and peak (31-60 d postpartum) periods on the lactation performance of the cows. Cows received 4.5 and 5 kg of dairy concentrate at 1-30 d postpartum and peak milk (31-60 d postpartum) respectively. Eragrostis curvula hay was supplied ad libitum and dry matter intake (DMI) was estimated at 7.2 kg of hay/cow/day from residual hay. No feeding treatment was imposed except for the standardised diets typical to the production environment. Two simulated lactation diets (LD1 and LD2) were prepared based on dry matter intake (DMI) of grass hay and lactation concentrate. Diets were assessed for nutrient composition using wet chemistry and in vitro ruminal degradation. Nutrient supply of diets and absorption from the small intestines as well as cows’ responses were predicted using the Large Ruminant Nutrition System (LRNS) version 1.0.33 (level 1). Body weight and BCS were monitored, blood was collected and analysed for proteins monthly. A record of milk yield was taken daily, and milk was analysed for fat, protein, lactose and urea nitrogen weekly. Cows had DMI of 11.2 kg which was 12% higher than the expected at 1-30 d postpartum period and 11.6 kg which was 21% higher than the expected in 31-60 d postpartum cows. Diets had low available protein as % of dietary protein (LD1=46%; LD2=45%) and the slowly degraded NDF fraction (NDFICP) constituted 64% of the available protein. Intake of energy was 20% and 17% lower than the predicted value for the cows, respectively, at 1-30 d postpartum and 31-60 d postpartum period. Cows had negative energy balance of -6.5 and -5.6 Mcal respectively at 1-30 d postpartum and 31-60 d postpartum cows. Protein intake of lactating cows was low, which resulted in negative protein balance of 59% and 42% of cow’s daily requirement, respectively, at 1-30 d postpartum period and 31-60 d postpartum period. There was loss of BW and BCS, low milk yield, energy corrected milk (ECM: 9.50 kg/d) and feed efficiency (FE) of less than 1 (LD1= 0.85; LD2 =0.89) in cows at both periods. Composition of fat, protein and lactose in milk were negatively affected by the low level of dietary protein. Somatic cell count (SCC) in milk was 121 ± 13 x 103/ml and cows did not show signs of illness. Mean milk urea nitrogen (MUN) concentration was 12 ± 2.7 mg/dl reflecting the low protein status of the lactating cows. Cows had high creatinine concentration of 116 and 102 μmol /L at 1-30 d postpartum and 31-61 d postpartum period, respectively, which may indicate muscle breakdown due to heat stress relative to the hot production environment. Results showed that diets fed to dairy cows on communal area smallholder farms in Sekhukhune and Vhembe districts in Limpopo province had low feeding value and their low nutrient supply affected rumen fermentation, heifers’ ‘growth, body reserves and early lactation in Jersey dairy cows. In conclusion, diets supplied to dairy cows raised on smallholder farms are low in nutrients and do not support efficient growth in heifers and optimal milk production in early lactation. Perceptions of nurse educators in Limpopo Province regarding their empowerment

The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of nurse educators in Limpopo Province regarding their empowerment. The researcher conducted a quantitative descriptive-correlative research design to describe the perceptions of nurse educators in Limpopo Province regarding their empowerment. Laschinger's Integrated Model of Nurse/Patient Empowerment deduced from Kanter's Theory of Structural Power in organisations and Spreitzer's Psychological Empowerment Theory guided the construction of the data collection instrument. Data collection was carried out using a self-designed structured questionnaire. The population comprised all nurse educators in Nursing Education Institutions in Limpopo Province. The Ethics Committee of the Department of Health in Limpopo Province granted permission to conduct the research in the Limpopo Province. Non-probability convenience sampling was applied to obtain the participant sample for the study. The study shed light on important aspects of nurse educators' perception of their empowerment. The findings demonstrated that nurse educators perceived the concept of empowerment differently. The most incorrect perception of empowerment was that empowerment entailed paternalism rather than democratic (n=73; f=43;58.9%) and that it involved alienation rather than being inclusive, also at 58.9%. The total average scores were of concern to the researcher. The results of respondents' experience of structural empowerment varied as only 0.9%(f=1) did not indicate whether they agreed or disagreed that structural empowerment existed at the NEIs. 40.4% (f=44) indicated/agreed to have experienced psychological empowerment while 57.8% (f=63) have not experienced psychological empowerment. The findings related to association amongst the constructs indicated that gender was not associated with structural empowerment as well as psychological empowerment (p-value less than 0.05). There was no association between the highest qualification and structural empowerment (50.5% (f=55). However, 57% (f=63) agreed that there was an association between the highest qualification and psychological empowerment of respondents. The respondents disagreed that years of teaching experience (50.5% (f=55) was associated with structural empowerment, while 48.6% (f=53) believed it existed. The respondents indicated that no association existed between the campus they were placed at and structural empowerment (50.9% (f=55) while 57.8% (f=62) agreed that the campus placement was associated with structural empowerment as well as being associated with psychological empowerment at 56.5% (f=61). The discipline in which the nurse educators were teaching was not associated with either their structural empowerment (p=843 more than p=0.05) or their psychological empowerment at p=0.955 more than p=0.005). The respondents agreed that the discipline they taught was associated with their psychological empowerment at 55.9% (f=57); however, no statistically significant association existed at p-value 0.665 more than p-value 0.005. As the results indicated, the concept of empowerment yielded various perceptions of nurse educators.
