January 2004 (has links)
Abstract: In this research we carried out a sociomoral study whose objective was to verify which rules and notions of justice are abstracted by street children subject to observation from a hypothetical situation of conflict involving assault. Applying the clinical method of Piaget and having as base his ideas about moral judgment, we observed and interviewed 20 male street children, from seven to thirteen years old, who often stay in a shelter located in the city of Jaboticabal (SP). The data were analyzed and classified according to the trends of moral development and notions of justice proposed by Piaget. The results showed that the children, under a situation of assault, exhibit more self-serving cognitive distortion characteristics in their responses. The notions of justice constrict in rewarding and distributing ones. We can conclude that the assault is an embedded characteristic in the moral formation of the street child, and that affects directly the child's development. Once the learned pattern to solve problems in the child's life context is the assault , it is in that that the he or she rests to resolve his or her everyday conflicts. / Mestre

Questionário sobre o consumo de álcool e drogas entre profissionais de saúde: um estudo exploratório / Questionaire on alcohol and drugs among health professionals: an exploratory study

Patrícia Rodrigues da Rocha 04 March 2010 (has links)
Nowadays drugs are considered a threat to humanity. In developing countries such as Brazil, alcohol is the main risk factor among other psychoactive substances. There are few studies on the prevalence of drug use in workplaces in Brazil, and on the means of employing institutions confront against drugs use by their workers and the conditions that lead to such use. The study was structured in two steps: 1) bibliographic review of auto-applying instruments on drugs between workers and 2) development and implementation of an auto-applying questionnaire on drug consumption among workers. The objectives of studies were: 1st step - Raise published studies that have as an object the use of alcohol and drugs by employees, between 1998 and 2008; identify and analyze the auto-applying instruments used by the studies, that measure prevalence and pattern of drug consumption between workers; and subsidize the development of an auto-applying questionnaire on the pattern of consumption of alcohol and drug use among workers; 2nd step - develop an auto-applying questionnaire that allows the identification of the prevalence and pattern of consumption of alcohol and drug use among health professionals, as well as the forms of confrontation by the worker and employer institutions; perform descriptive analysis of the questionnaire developed and of its main results; and to evaluate the understanding of the questions in the developed questionnaire from suggestions and answers marked by the subjects of study. We found some difficulties for the application of instruments related to drug use on the working environment, so we focus only on a professional category, the nurses. This is a quantitative, descriptive and exploratory survey carried out with 111 health workers from a public nursing college situated in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Through bibliographic revision it was verified that there are few auto-applying instruments on the pattern of consumption of alcohol and drug use among workers. It was constructed a questionnaire to identify socio-demographic information, professional history, information on the consumption of alcohol and other drugs, occupational stress information, and information about the forms of confrontation by the worker and employer institutions on the consumption of drugs. The questionnaire was applied to post-graduate students from a public nursing faculty. It was noted that some questions were difficult to understand and need to be reformulated, in order to improve the understanding of the respondents, since an auto-applying questionnaire should be self-explanatory. The AUDIT scales and Job Stress Scale were important to identify problems related to alcohol and the work stress. Alcohol is the drug most widely used by health professionals, followed by psychoactive drugs. Therefore, emphasis must be given to the question of the phenomenon of drugs in the work environment, promoting prevention and quality of life programmes to the worker. Also should be emphasized the importance of addressing the questions about drugs in graduates of healthcare, promoting the knowledge of the future professional about the risks and damage arising from the use and abuse of drugs.

O outro lado de uma política de governo na reprodução e perpetuação de desumanidades: o recolhimento de crianças e adolescentes em situação de rua na cidade do Rio de Janeiro / The other side of a government policy on the reproduction and perpetuation of inhumanities: the gathering of children and adolescents on the streets in the city of Rio de Janeiro

Márcia Elizabeth Gatto Brito 29 November 2011 (has links)
This Master Sccience dissertation deals with the practice of gathering children and adolescents on the streets in the city of Rio de Janeiro, as a kind of government policy that is reproducing and perpetuating a state of barbarism, intolerance and inhumanity to this segment of the population. The background of this phenomenon is made during the period 2001 to 2011, when Rio Criança Network, when the network celebrated its 10 years of foundation in Rio de Janeiro city and, the establishment of the administrations of Cesar Maia (2001 to 2009) and the two firsts years of management of Eduardo Paes in Rio de Janeiro (2010-2011). For further analysis, it is important report the recent history to better understand the development of this phenomenon and its contradictory process, which have in the capitalist system the deepening of inequality and intolerance, the production of subjectivities on the dangerous youngers, and the perpetuation of control practices and repression directed to the poor people. In this process, we observed the maintenance of retrograde practices inspired by the hygienism and eugenic. I also try to bring my involvement with this story, and dialogue with other authors, working some categories to help build the object. As these facts have been historically, socially and culturally constructed and still are in the present, what kind of rationality is present, to know these boys and girls victims of the operations of withdrawal, feel how these pratices afected theys and what are the consequences in their lives, these questions are important issues analyzed in this research.

Limiares urbanos : a necessária precariedade à existência

Zwetsch, Bárbara Elisa January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation is the result of the completion of several discussions and reflections on ways to live and dwell in the city nowadays. Such issues arise in the research process of the author, which occurred in the town of Novo Hamburgo-RS during the year of 2011, together with people on street situation. The choice of telling about the city through the eyes of this population occurs by the statements of Calvino, Foucault and Peixoto that an ethical choice on research is not based in the reproduction of hegemonic ways of city life, but an ethics which strives to establish a difference in the landscape through the opaque detail that questions the total condition. Supported by the placement of Benjamin, Agamben and Gagnebin, that the true storytellers of the city are those who will not let us forget the deep fracture that establishes society and having the utopia as a ethical-esthetic-political bet, we chose to use the imagery device, inspired in photographic productions of Jeff Wall, to give visibility to the inhabit of the city. Thus, we proposed to the research participants to think and choose a living image of the city that was meaningful to them so we could recreate it through writing and photography. Through these images, this paper aims to examine how the processes of exclusion and subjectivity occur in contemporary cities. Recognizing the small forgetfulness of history powerful experience fragments of the city, as the discussion on the witness will prove and, therefore, seeks the strength to question the ways of inhabiting the city via the witness function. To do so, the writing consists essentially of three parts. At first, it will address the way of research, discussing the constitution and the choices on the method of research, from questions about the role of witness. Secondly, it will discuss some considerations that are understood as fundamental to the understanding of the city, like the ethical questioning about over viewing the city, how they established the city as a science and the method to its understanding and, how it became part of the discourse of the town; the analysis of the Brazilian urbanization process and the city of Novo Hamburgo, which was the setting of this research and, through discussions of Foucault and Agamben, the modes of subjectivation that constitute the city from two central issues: the question of the infamous lifes and the question of how policies are set at the infamous lives, how the biopolitical becomes the paradigm of cities, influencing public policies. The final part is composed of images that were possible from this path, as well as the discussion of them.

Informal urbanism : an appraisal of socio-legal and economic dynamics in East London, South Africa

Sibanda, Phaxenda Maxwell January 2017 (has links)
Many cities and towns in the Global South continue to experience the growth of the informal sector. There are a number of reasons which explain the growth of the informal sector. These include formal sector retrenchments, shortage of jobs in the formal sector and lack of skills. Street vendors are the most visible traders in the informal sector as compared to other kind of traders. In many cities, the spaces in which vendors conduct their trading is not allocated to them legally as they are seen as a nuisance or obstruction to commerce and the free flow of traffic. Against this background, this study examines the contestation for vending in the East London Central Business District (CBD) Eastern Cape, South Africa. It specifically explores social processes and vendor decision making when it comes to choosing (or claiming) a particular vending space, the legal instruments (by-laws) that either promote or constrain informal trading activities. Furthermore, it investigates the extent to which street vending contributes to the traders‟ income generation and sustainable livelihoods. This study uses a qualitative research design. Purposive sampling was used to select thirty informal traders. In-depth semi structured interviews were conducted with all thirty respondents In addition to the thirty respondents, five key informants were interviewed. The study found that street vending plays a major role in providing BCMM people with livelihood opportunities. Trading space in the CBD is strictly competitive and the spaces they acquire are too small for their businesses to expand to another level. Vendors face a lot of challenges but at the epitome of their challenges is the vending by- laws which the vendors view as a major constraint when it comes to operating smoothly in the streets. The study suggested that vending polices and by- laws be reviewed in order to derive a better socio- economic and functional environment for vendors.

Avaliação estética do mobiliário urbano e do uso de abrigos de ônibus por cadeirantes

John, Naiana Maura January 2012 (has links)
This research investigates, based on people’s perception, street furniture and its relationship to the aesthetics of the landscape and the use of public open spaces. About the aesthetic, we investigated different models of transport shelters, telephone booths and newstands, considering the elements individually and placed in urban scenes. The evaluations were conducted with architects, non-architects college graduates and people without college graduates, in order to determine possible differences in interpretations of these groups. For use, an analysis was developed on the placement of bus shelters on sidewalks with different dimensions, considering the preferences of users in wheelchairs, as these respondents have greater need for space for its locomotion. Data collection was conducted through archival records and field work with application of questionnaires through the Internet. Data analysis was carried out by means of non-parametric statistical tests and qualitative assessments. The aesthetics’ results, in general, showed that the formal characteristics of street furniture more satisfactory to most people relate to neutrality, little variation between compositional elements and simple geometric configuration. These findings were found in the analysis of the elements when considered separately and when placed in the landscape. Regarding the groups of respondents, although some significant differences in the evaluations, the research showed that education does not interfere as to present relevant differences regarding the aesthetic preferences. The investigation also found that the scenes in which the furniture constitutes visual barrier in the landscape tend to be judged negatively. The use’s results indicated that the placement of bus shelters that tends to be more suitable to people in wheelchairs is along the facades of buildings, keeping free range of movement between the shelter and the curb. Finally, the survey allowed enhance the importance of considering the users’ opinions about the design and implementation of street furniture for such elements as are satisfactory to the aesthetics and use.

Don't Hold Your Breath: The Creation and Performance of a Theatrical Memoir in Motion

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Don't Hold Your Breath is an evening-length performance created and performed by Sarah "Saza" Kent and EPIK Dance Company that consisted of street and concert dance combined with hip hop theatre, spoken text and live singing. What began as a one-woman show about the choreographer's life, turned in to an ensemble piece that included the stories of many people, including ten community members who were interviewed on their views of life and death after being affected by a diagnosis. The show follows Kat, a young woman tiptoeing the line between her party girl past and the thought of finally growing up and settling down. Typically confident and self-assured, she is now grappling with the idea of life and death. Kat finds herself in an MRI machine that could ultimately determine her fate. As the machine examines her body, she begins to examine her life, causing her to confront some of life's most existential questions. Has she spent her time wisely? Would she do anything differently if given a second chance? When it comes down to it, and all distractions are stripped away, what is truly important? Her thoughts take her to memories of her past and visions for her future as she faces the reality that life is finite and tomorrow is not promised. This document is an account of the show's process and serves as a place of explanation, analysis, and reflection, while also questioning its significance on a personal level all the way to its place in the field. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Dance 2018

'On road' culture in context : masculinities, religion, and 'trapping' in inner city London

Reid, Ebony January 2017 (has links)
The gang has been a focal concern in UK media, political discourse, policy, and policing interventions in the last decade, occupying the position of contemporary ‘folk devil’. Despite the heightened attention on urban ‘gang culture’, sociological research on gangs in the UK is limited. However, some sociologists do stress a deterministic relationship between gangs and black urban youth, rendering urban men a source of fascination and repulsion, easy scapegoats in explaining street violence. Arguably, current work that privileges the idea of gang membership misunderstands much about the lives of some men involved. This thesis contributes to correcting that misunderstanding. The study adopts a social constructionist perspective in understanding the (multiple) ways urban men in an inner city area of London construct their lives when immersed in what they refer to as being ‘on road’, a symbolic space in which everyday lives are played out. As a broadly ethnographic study, the data for the thesis were generated using participant observation and semi-structured interviews with a range of participants, including young and adult men. The study identifies three distinct ways in which some men become trapped in difficult experiences and identities ‘on road’. It focuses on the implications of the notion of ‘trappedness’ on their experiences in public space, employment opportunities and, self- identity. The ‘on road’ lives of the men in the study represent a paradox: the road appears to offer opportunity to build masculine identity but entangles them further in a trap, restricting freedom and stunting personal growth. This study has significance for sociological theory. Theoretically, the idea of being ‘on road’ can be understood as a discourse that persists in the language and symbolism that flows through these men’s experiences and narratives. As such the idea of ‘onroadness’ powerfully shapes all aspects of their lives. It is argued that more focus is needed on the psychosocial factors that force some men into volatile social worlds, and the personal contexts that frame local narratives of ‘on road’ culture, especially within wider experiences of friendship, faith, and identity. The thesis suggests that this form of analysis offers a critical explanatory framework within which it is possible to understand the lives of some of the young and adult men in certain inner city areas in the UK.

Negotiating Healthy Self-Government: A Grounded Theory Study of Interactions in Arizona's WIC Program

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Individual behavior change is a goal of many public policies directed at people of low socioeconomic status. Without evidence of behavioral change, these policies cannot be considered a success: a process of co-production where some level of cooperation between the client and program administrators is required to successfully meet program objectives. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), is one example of a co-production design. WIC encourages women to engage in healthy behaviors by providing healthy food along with nutrition education to improve the health status of low-income families. However, while WIC is one of the most studied nutrition programs, little attention has been paid to the nutrition education portion or to interactions between staff members and participants. This research draws on the public policy and administration literature about street-level bureaucrats and co-production, which provides a framework for understanding the purposeful, inter-dependent relationships between front-line service providers and clients. However, neither literature explicates the process of interactions that is expected to lead to client behavior change and co-production. The primary contribution of this research is the creation of a grounded theory that identifies and explains the WIC interaction process as one of "negotiating healthy self-government". Based on analysis of three months of observations of WIC encounters in two clinics, this research finds that participants and staff members enter into tacit and explicit negotiations concerning the degree to which participants should govern their family's nutrition-related behavior. Clients actively shape the interactions by demonstrating their discipline and efforts to feed their families, while staff members refine and reinforce self-governing behaviors through assessing action, and providing advice to ensure behaviors meet recommendations. Finally, participants and staff members distinctly link self-governing behavior to identity: "good mothers" feed their children healthy food and govern their behaviors to meet nutritional recommendations. This research has implications for the study of behavior change promotion in public programs by introducing the concept of identity as a mechanism for governance and explicating the interaction process between front-line service providers and clients / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Public Policy 2014
