A nun's life : Barking Abbey in the late-medieval and early modern periods

The purpose of this project is to gain an understanding of the daily lives of nuns in an English nunnery by examining a particular prominent abbey. This study also attempts to update the history of the abbey by incorporating methods and theories used by recent historians of women's monasticism, as well as recent archaeological evidence found at the abbey site. By including specific examinations of Barking Abbey's last nuns, as well as the nuns' artistic and cultural pursuits, this thesis expands the scholarship of the abbey's history into areas previously unexplored. This thesis begins with a look at the nuns of Barking Abbey. the social status of their secular families, and how that status may have defined life in the abbey. It also looks at how Barking fit into the larger context of English women's monasticism based on the social provenance of its nuns. The analysis then turns to the nuns' daily temporal and spiritual responsibilities, focusing on the nuns' liturgical lives as well as the work required for the efficient maintenance of the house. Also covered is the relationship the abbey and its nuns had with their local lay community. This is followed by an examination of cultural activity at the abbey with discussion of books and manuscripts, music, singing, procession, and various other art forms. The final chapter examines the abbey's dissolution in 1539 under Henry VIII's religious reforms, including the dissolution's effect on some of the abbey's last nuns.

Heymericus de Campo: <i>Dyalogus super Reuelacionibus beate Birgitte</i> : A Critical Edition with an Introduction

<p>This dissertation contains an edition of <i>Dyalogus super Reuelacionibus beate Birgitte</i>, which is a discussion and defence of the Revelations (<i>Reuelaciones</i>) of St. Birgitta of Sweden (ca. 1303-1373). In legal proceedings at the Council of Basle (1431-1449), the <i>Reuelaciones</i> were accused of heresy, examined and defended. Among the defenders was Heymericus de Campo (1395-1460), who at that time was professor of theology at the University of Cologne. In addition to the formal examination reports, Heymericus wrote a dialogue on the subject. The <i>Dyalogus</i>, which was probably composed as a contribution to a debate, is tentatively dated to have been written between October 1434 and February 17, 1435. The main part of <i>Dyalogus </i>consists of 123 text passages extracted from the <i>Reuelaciones</i> and accused of heresy, and Heymericus’ defence of these text passages. The aim of the defence is to prove that the <i>Reuelaciones</i> are truly orthodox and thus inspired by God. In addition, Heymericus intends to display the reasons and arguments the impugners had for questioning the <i>Reuelaciones</i>. <i>Dyalogus</i> and the other defences were read and copied foremost within the Birgittine order. The judgement passed at the proceedings called for a commentary before the <i>Reuelaciones</i> could be disseminated to the whole of their extent. To the Birgittines the defences of Basle filled this purpose, at least for some time. </p><p>The extensive introduction of the thesis deals with the historical context of the text, its use and importance, its place within the author’s literary production, the contents and language of the text, and finally the textual transmission. Vadstena Abbey’s copy of the text is chosen as base manuscript for the edition.</p>

Cette recherche est une réflexion au sujet des motifs pouvant être à l'origine du rôle de premier plan qu'eurent les monastères au Ve siècle. Ces derniers deviennent de véritables "pipiniéres" d'èvêques par excellence, et cela tout au long de cette période de trouble. Dês lors, nous avons tenté de déterminer quelle place occupaient les moines dans la structure ecclésiastique provençale, quel rôle jouaient-ils dans l'articulation des liens politicosociaux gaulois de même que pour la construction d'une autorité. C'est-à-dire, une notion fondamentale pour l'exercice du pouvoir sur les biens et sur les hommes par les évêques, consolidée au VIe siècle. De manière à développer cette recherche, nous sommes-nous appuyée sur une documentation de nature diverse, majoritairement originaire de la région de Provence, dans le Sud-Est de la Gaule. Les documents présentés ici furent originairement produits entre 390 et 470 ap. J.-C., période considérée comme l' "âge d'or" de l'Abbaye de Lérins et durant laquelle sont issus les plus grands évêques de toute La Gaule. Aussi, nous sommes-nous davantage concentrée sur la perspective du monachisme présentée et divulguée par l'un des principaux théoriciens du monachisme gaulois: Jean Cassien. Esta pesquisa foi norteada pela reflexão sobre os motivos que fizeram dos mosteiros os "viveiros de bispos" por excelência ao longo do conturbado século V. Com isso, procurou-se determinar o lugar ocupado pelos monges na estrutura eclesiástica provençal e o papel que desempenharam para a articulação dos vínculos político-sociais gauleses, bem como para a construção de uma noção de autoridade fundamental para o exercício do poder sobre bens e sobre homens por parte dos bispos, consolidado no século VI. Para desenvolver a pesquisa, contamos com uma documentação de natureza diversa, oriunda, em sua maioria, da região da Provença, no Sudeste da Gália. Os documentos aqui apresentados foram produzidos, fundamentalmente, entre 390 e 470 d.C, período este considerado a "era de ouro" da abadia de Lérins, de onde saíram os bispos mais importantes da Gália. Tal processo é visto como a etapa fundamental e determinante para a consolidação da função episcopal / Abstract: The work entitled "From the institutionalization of the monasticism to the making of the "monachization" of the bishopric in John Cassian and the lerinians's Provence (fourth and fifth centuries)" portrays one of the features of Gaul's Christianity: the emerging of the monk-bishops. This research was directed by reflecting over the causes which turned the monasteries to "bishops' yards" of its highest degree during the unsettled fifth century. Hereupon it was sought to determine the position held by the monks in the Provençal clericalist structure and the role interpreted by them in the enunciating of the socialpolitical ties of the Gauls, as well as the formation of a notion concerning the fundamental authority to exercise power over lands and men from the bishop's part, which was consolidated in the sixth century. In order to develop this research, we relied on a varied source of documents, arising from, in its majority, from the Provence area, in the south of Gaul. The documents used here were ultimately produced in the period between 390 and 470 A.D., which was considered the "golden era" of the Lerins abbey, which was also the origin of the most important bishops of Gaul. In this research attention is also paid to the monkhood perspective presented and uncovered by one of the main theorists of the Gaulish monkhood, John Cassian. Therefore, this work concerns the process of institutionalization of the Provence monastic life, which was laid down by John Cassian and accomplished at Lerins abbey. As fontes medievais abundam em referências à sua proeminência, designando-a como a ¿mãe das igrejas francesas¿. Por muitos séculos, ela foi o núcleo da prestigiosa abadia real, estatuto que a isentava de qualquer dominação feudal ou eclesiástica, estando sujeita apenas ao rei. No que respeita à história da arte, pode-se dizer que o período mais significativo na trajetória da igreja abacial é o da reforma promovida pelo abade Suger, realizada entre 1137 e 1144. Suger promoveu uma reformulação completa na parte ocidental (nártex) e na cabeceira (o coro e a cripta), transformando completamente o antigo edifício, da época carolíngia (século VIII). O nártex foi ampliado e ganhou elementos novos, como a rosácea na fachada, três portais de entrada e as estátuas-coluna, hoje desaparecidas, que flanqueavam o portal central. No coro, a mudança foi ainda mais intensa: a pequena abside carolíngia foi substituída por uma estrutura de grandes dimensões, equipada com sete capelas radiantes. A grande novidade ficava por conta dos vitrais que recobriam as janelas desses oratórios, os quais permitiam à luz do dia espalhar-se por todo o coro, desobstruído das grossas paredes. As mudanças estruturais e a nova concepção do espaço tornavam o edifício bastante distinto, quando comparado às construções românicas da época; a Saint-Denis de Suger é vista pelos estudiosos da arte medieval como um protótipo, onde a arquitetura gótica encontrou sua primeira definição, irradiando-se, nos séculos seguintes, para toda a Europa. Esta dissertação de Mestrado apresenta a tradução de um dos textos capitais para a compreensão das realizações de Suger em Saint-Denis, o De Consecratione Ecclesiae Sancti Dionysii, acompanhado de notas explicativas e dois textos críticos: um sobre o lugar de Suger na historiografia da arte medieval e outro acerca das relações entre teologia e ¿estética¿ no templo edificado pelo abade / Abstract: The abbey church of Saint-Denis, situated at the vicinity of Paris, is one of the most proeminent of the European Middle Ages. Medieval sources have a great number of references to its importance, naming it as the ¿mother of the French churches¿. For many centuries, the abbey church was the core of the prestigious royal abbey, and its status has made it free of any feudal or ecclesiastical domination and only subject to the king himself. To art historians, the most significative moment in the history of the church is the great reform promoted by abbot Suger (1122-1151) during the years 1137-1144. Suger has achieved a complete reformulation in the western sector (the narthex) and the chevet (the choir and the crypt), transforming the old carolingian building (erected at the 8th century). The narthex was enlarged and added of three new portals and statue-columns (disappeared) that flanked the central portal. In the choir, the changes were still more significant: the little carolingian apse was removed and, at its place, a new and great structure was constructed, equipped with seven radiant chappels. But one of the most significant innovations present in Suger¿s new building were the stained glass windows, the great vitraux that let the daylight spread over the choir. One can say that the structural changes and the new conception of the ecclesiatical space gave the church of Suger a new form, quiet different from other romanic sanctuaries of its time. This new building erected under Suger¿s administration is considered by the scholars as the beginning of Gothic architecture, which should spread thereafter all over Europe. Detection and assessment of pain in dementia care practice : Registered nurses’ and certified nursing assistants’ experiences

Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to explore and describe registered nurses’ (RNs) and certified nursing assistants’ (CNAs) experiences of detection and assessment of pain in older people with cognitive impairment and dementia. A further aim was to evaluate the Abbey Pain Scale-SWE (APS-SWE) in dementia care practice. Methods: An exploratory and descriptive design was used in Study I. An exploratory and interpreting design was used in Study II and Study III. A prospective, descriptive, observational and instrumental design was used in Study IV. Focus group interviews (I) and individual interviews (II, III) were applied to explore and describe RNs’ and CNAs’ experiences of pain assessment in people living with dementia. Qualitative content analysis (I) and philosophical hermeneutics (II) were used to analyse qualitative data. Observation, instrument, and questionnaire were applied to evaluate reliability and face validity of the APS-SWE for pain assessment. Descriptive statistics and reliability analyses were used to analyse quantitative data (IV). Results: RNs in special housing accommodation settings experiences that pain assessment in people with dementia is challenging primarily due to their changed RN consultant role, which to a great extent is directed into administrative and consultative tasks rather than bedside care. This has led to decreased time in daily nursing care, preventing recognising symptoms of pain. This have also led to that RNs are dependent on information from CNAs who are the front-line staff providing daily care (I). CNAs’ perception of signs of pain in people with dementia emerges from being present in the care situation and alertness on physical and behavioural changes that could be due to pain, and from providing the care in a preventive, protective and supportive way to prevent painful situations occurring (II). RNs and CNAs working in home healthcare team use a variety of strategies to detect and assess pain. A trustful work relationship based on staff continuity and a good relation to the person in need of care facilitates pain assessment situations (III). Systematic observation of older people living in special housing accommodation during rest and mobility using the APS-SWE demonstrates that the scale has adequate internal consistency, reliability, and face validity for pain assessment (IV). Conclusions: This thesis found that the RNs’ and CNAs’ detections and assessments of pain rely on solid cooperation, staff continuity, and good knowledge of the person cared for. It was also revealed that there is a lack of using appropriate and assisting pain tools. The APS-SWE show adequate reliability and face validity and can serve as a useful pain tool to assist in detection and assessment of pain in older people who are limited in verbalising pain recognisable. Further evaluation of how the person-centred perspective is applied in pain assessment situations is needed in order to evaluate positive outcomes in people with dementia. Desert Solitaire: Using literature to develop a sense of place and stewardship of wilderness in high school students

The Desert Solitaire curriculum was designed as a basis for exploring Edward Abbey's book, of the same name, in a high school field ecology class. Students read the book over a period of six weeks during the middle of the school year. Lessons were designed to aid students in exploring their home ecosystem, the Mojave Desert, via comparison with Arches National Monument as described in Desert Solitaire. This exploration fosters in students a sense of place and connection with their home environment. With little alteration, the curriculum can be used by students to examine their own ecosystem, even if it is not a desert. Furthermore, this curriculum can be used for delving into environmental issues, exploring environmental values and/or beliefs, or as an introduction to the genre of nature literature.

Bad Bitch, White Witch : A Study of the Crossover Star Personas of Supermodel-Actors Devon Aoki and Abbey Lee

While it is very common for supermodels to make the occasional foray into cinematic performance, and some of them manage to turn these forays into full-time careers in acting, it is very rare that supermodel-actors are afforded any academic attention. This thesis seeks to change this through a case study of two supermodel-actors: Devon Aoki and Abbey Lee. Using a methodology that combines extratextual contextualization with close analysis of image and film materials, and grounded in a perspective that centers the body, it analyzes Aoki and Lee’s careers as they cross over from one form of stardom to another. The focus of the analysis lies in the way that the bodily capital which is the basis of their modelling work also informs their acting personas as they are shaped through their on-screen work, publicity and reception. Furthermore, the thesis applies the concept of niche stardom, adapted from Diane Negra, to illustrate how Aoki and Lee inhabit a stardom which is specific to certain audiences with specific values and tastes. The analysis finds that there is a significant overlap between Aoki and Lee’s modelling and acting personas, and that this overlap is channeled through the representations of their bodies which, are the sites of heterogeneous discourses of gender, sexuality and race.

Den trefaldiga Urmodern : Kvinnlig treenighet och biblisk intertextualitet i Maresi

In this paper, the triple goddess portrayed in Maresi: The Red Abbey Chronicles (2014) by Maria Turtschaninoff is analyzed. The paper discusses the female replacement of the all-male trinity in Maresi and how it can be linked to thealogical rewritings of the Bible. Using feministic theory, an analysis is made about how the Maiden, Mother and Crone in Maresi follow or divert from the traditional female archetypes. The biblical intertextuality in the novel is discussed by connecting it to each aspect of the triple goddess. The result is that Maresi is a rewritten version of the Bible, using biblical events and characters to criticize the patriarchy. Turtschaninoff’s portrait of the Maiden, Mother and Crone diverts from the typical female archetypes. This diversion results in a more complex depiction of the woman in literature.
