The composition of The Wings of the Dove has received adverse criticism virtually since its first publication in 1902. Relying upon James's, and Percy Lubbock's, contention that the· purpose of a novel's form is to treat its subject, this thesis will argue against ~he prevailing critical·views. The discassion will demonstrate that the subject of The Wings of the Dove is located in Milly Theale's moral influence upon Merton Densher and Kate Croy. The composition of the novel adequately develops and augments this subject. Moreover, this thesis will suggest that The Wings of the Dove provides as good an example of the culmination of James's literary accomplishments as any of the other later novels. His special talents are equally apparent in the techniques he employs to create a structural unity in The Wings of the Dove. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Funding a scholarship is a great opportunity to involve your Friends, board of trustees, or other cooperative partners in furthering the professional development degree goals of your organization. Many of us have highly motivated workers who are seeking a degree. Awarding student scholarships can help allay their loan burdens while raising the library’s profile as an active agent in supporting education. At East Tennessee State University, Sherrod Library rewards our best undergraduate workers with a Student Worker scholarship. In Fall 2016, we created an additional scholarship for our graduate assistants as well as a scholarship for excellence in library research for graduate students. We will discuss the timeline, criteria, rubrics, and selection process for these awards, our experience working with our advancement office, and ideas for soliciting potential community donors to underwrite scholarships. Marketing and promotion strategies will also be discussed.

Studien grundar sig i att undersöka varför vissa elever ”nöjer sig med godkänt”. Varför väljer vissa elever att sträva mot betyget E och andra mot A i samband med teoretiska prov? Fyra elever på ett yrkesförberedande gymnasieprogram har intervjuats i denna kvalitativa studie för att förstå vilka motivationsaspekter som kan påverka elever i sina studier. Resultatet visar bland annat att elever värderar betyg olika, någon elev tvivlar på sin förmåga att kunna prestera ett A, samt att eleverna påverkas av sina klasskamraters studiemotivation. I diskussionen påpekas värdet av feedback och att eleverna hellre bör berömmas för sina prestationer än för sina personliga egenskaper. / This study is based on examining why some students “settle for E”. Why do some students choose to strive for the grade E and others for A in the context of theoretical exams? Four students at a vocational upper secondary school program have been interviewed in this qualitative study to understand which motivational aspects that can influence students in their studies. The results show that students value the ratings differently, one student has doubts about the ability to perform an A, and students are influenced by their classmates’ motivation to study. The discussion pointed out the value of feedback and that students rather should be encouraged for their efforts rather than for their personal characteristics.

This research tries to establish whether knowledge of music and its related areas – specifically playing an instrument, singing and dancing – had an influence on the social status of a young lady in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in England. Three of Jane Austen’s novels (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Emma) are analysed and the main female characters in each are scrutinised with regard to their differing levels of musical accomplishment. Their individual positions on the social ladder at the end of each novel are evaluated and their change in situation is discussed. The notion that young ladies had to be accomplished in certain specified areas in order to be socially acceptable was an established convention during Jane Austen’s lifetime. So-called “conduct books” and the general expectations of society required that all young ladies who were of a marriageable age and whose fathers could afford to have them “educated” had to be trained in music, singing, drawing, dancing and the modern languages. These patrilineal and superficial demands made on young ladies apparently irked Austen to the point of ignoring them completely when she created the main female characters for her novels: none of them conformed to the prevailing social norm. Nevertheless, each of the novels ends with the main ladies having made a conquest of a gentleman who is in a socially superior position to themselves. These matches are however love and admiration driven and the lady’s accomplishment (or lack thereof) had no influence on the inevitable result. Austen’s novels have been the inspiration for numerous adaptations, and two visual adaptations of each of the chosen three novels are studied. Each of the films or BBC TV series emphasises specific aspects of the novels and accentuates the social sphere that the characters live in. Although there are differences between the different versions (novel, film and BBC TV series), the core of each story stays the same and the results are inevitable. Austen’s supposed feministic views are pointed out in this study. Conflict of opinion exists about whether Austen’s novels are examples of the patriarchal values prevalent at the time or whether they in fact question and contradict such old-fashioned ideologies. Her connection to Mary Wollstonecraft is explored and key concerns emerging from their individual works come to the fore. Ascarelli summarises the converging viewpoints of Austen and Wollstonecraft and remarks that (2004) “women are rational creatures, and […], in order for women to fulfil their potential as human beings, they must learn how to think for themselves”. The latter two concepts and their implications are highlighted in the three Austen novels chosen for the study. There is general consensus that Jane Austen is one of the most famous authors in history and her six novels are her legacy. This essay aims to analyze the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller from an Althusserian perspective, focusing on his theory on ideology and ideological apparatuses. The theory has been implemented by analyzing the main characters individually to decipher their ideological views and how they have been subjects of interpellation. Furthermore, this essay will attempt to examine which ideological apparatuses are displayed in the play and how they have influenced the characters. According to this interpretation of the play, they all believe success is reachable for everybody, depending on their status and how well-liked and admired they are. Their ideological views differ slightly among each character; however, the fundamental idea that a man is worthy and accomplished only through success is shared by everyone. The ideology that is predominant in the family can be described as the “American dream”. The conclusion is that the most influential interpellation that occurs in the play is from the family ideology apparatus, and that the interpretation of the ideology embraced by the family is what makes them fail to achieve their dreams.

Det observerade problemet var att det fanns brister i evidensen på om elevers läsförståelse påverkades av vilket medium de läste i. Litteraturstudiens syfte var därför att bidra med kunskap gällande digital och traditionell läsning vid läsförståelse och hur det kan komma att reflektera elevernas resultat. Syftet mynnade ut i frågeställningen: Vad påverkar elevernas prestationer i läsförståelse vid digital- och traditionell läsning? Efter att en utförlig analys av sju peer reviewed-artiklar som berörde elevers läsförståelse i digital och traditionell läsning genomförts, visade artiklarna olika resultat. I litteraturstudiens resultat presenterades fem olika teman som presenterade olika faktorer som påverkar elevernas läsförståelse mer än faktorn om de läser digitalt eller traditionellt. Slusatsen som drogs utifrån det var att det fanns andra och viktigare faktorer som påverkar elevers läsförståelse mer än i vilket medium de läser och genomför sin läsförståelse på. Vilket medförde att det för nyblivna och yrkesverksamma lärare var viktigt att uppmärksamma dessa faktorer då skolan rör sig mot en allt mer digitaliserad vardag. / The observed problem was that there were a gap in the evidence regarding whether students’ reading comprehension actually were affected by the medium in which they read. The aim of this study was to contribute with research on digital and traditional reading in relation to reading comprehension and how it reflects on students' results. The research question used was What affects students' accomplishments in reading comprehension in digital and traditional reading? After a thorough thematic analysis of seven peer reviewed articles that examined students reading comprehension in digital and traditional reading, the articles showed a variation of results. The study presents a result with five different themes that each represent different factors that affect students' accomplishments more than digital or traditional reading. The conclusion that were drawn were that there were other and more important factors that affect the reading comprehension than in which medium the reading was carried out. This entailed that it was important for newly graduated and active working teachers to pay attention to these factors as the school moves towards an increasingly digitized everyday life.

This project makes available material that will help help drama directors cast young people in an improvisational show. This thesis includes suggestions for try-outs, a play manuscript with specific stage directions understandable to an inexperienced director, preparation exercises to help actors develop necessary dramatic skills, an index to these exercises arranged by areas of skill development, notes to the director, an extensive bibliography, and additional references for further research. The exercises can also be used for development of actors in any production and may be applied to education programs. The play "Mormon Montage" concerns Mormon contributions to such fields as politics, education, science, technology, and business. It can provide church identification models for LDS youth as well as aid in the missionary effort. Future contributions of many LDS figures the world over may be added to this script which taps the resources of a world church and portrays the pride of Mormon heritage.

This dissertation studies the outcomes that higher education courses and seminars in stress management have on the stress levels of pastors. It identifies stress level differences between a sample of pastors who have and who have not been trained in stress management. The instrument that was used to assess the levels of stress was the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The Inventory is a twenty-two item dual-rating instrument that measures the frequency and intensity of three aspects of the burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a lack of personal accomplishment. Demographic questions were used to determine the respondents' sex, age, education, and experience in the clergy. These questions were asked for descriptive purposes only. In addition, questions were asked that would determine whether or not the pastors had had stress management training.

abstract: The Student Performance Accomplishments Questionnaire (SPAQ) was developed and validated in two studies with two normative samples totaling 315 college students, including a subsample of undocumented students. This instrument assesses academic performance accomplishments in the context of students' academic, extracurricular, and advocacy roles. Performance accomplishments are theorized to be one of four sources of efficacy (Bandura, 1977, 1986). Study 2 tested part of the Social Cognitive Career Theory model (Lent et al., 1994) in a sample of 154 student advocates. By conventional standards, the results yielded no support for the SCCT model and suggested the need for an alternative model. Results showed that student performance accomplishments in advocacy are highly related to students' academic outcomes, particularly choice actions. Choice actions were subsequently related to career goals and academic performance. No significant differences were found between documented and undocumented students on any of the variables studied. It was found that student advocates were significantly higher in performance accomplishments in advocacy, academic self-efficacy, choice action, and academic performance in comparison to student non-advocates. The primary objective of this work is to comprehensively evaluate the capacity of the BRICS to achieve its objectives by mutual cooperation, based on the confrontation of the declared aims of the group itself during its annual summits with real achievements. The secondary aim of the study is to estimate the direction in which the cooperation between the BRICS will be heading in the future and to define possible challenges threatening its success. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part the author describes the genesis of the term "BRICS", and then continues by describing the essential characteristics of individual BRICS countries and their mutual similarities and differences. In the second, main part, the author evaluates the extent of fulfillment of individual goals set during the BRICS summits, taking place annually since 2009. The author evaluates seven selected key goals by analyzing the reasons for their implementation, proposed methods of implementation, the steps taken for their fulfillment, the effectiveness of these steps and the current status. Subsequently, in a similar manner author evaluates several sub-targets. In the third part, the author presents the expectations for the forthcoming BRICS summit, outlines possible directions that will be taken by BRICS in the future and identifies the weaknesses threatening their successful cooperation.
