PROBLEM: Expanding knowledge of how the brain responds to various exercise types may allow for investigation and development of individualized methods of concussion management.
PURPOSE: Identify differences in cerebral oxygenation recovery following bouts of maximal anaerobic, resistance and aerobic exercise.
METHODS: Twenty-eight active adults were recruited, each partaking in two sessions. At the first, anthropometric measures and leg press 1-RM were determined. During the second session, cerebral oxygenation and ventilatory gas exchange variables were recorded while participants completed maximal anaerobic, resistance, and aerobic tests, and for 15-minutes of recovery.
RESULTS: Anaerobic (637.41s ± 330.42s) and aerobic (689.29s ± 311.05s) exercise resulted in longer durations of time to return to baseline compared to resistance (363.07s ± 366.34s).
CONCLUSION: Anaerobic and aerobic exercise taking longer than resistance to return to baseline indicates prolonged activity. Expecting equivalent outcomes as concussion management tools from differing exercise methods may be misguided and requires additional research. / February 2017

The Importance of Carbohydrate Timing during High-intensity Training while Consuming a Low Carbohydrate DietKrings, Benjamin Michael 04 May 2018 (has links)
The effects of low carbohydrate (CHO), high fat (LCHF) diets on adaptations to high-intensity exercise have recently gained interest. Consuming a LCHF may potentially decrease the ability to use CHO during exercise and impair high-intensity exercise adaptations. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the importance of CHO timing while consuming a LCHF diet and completing a high-intensity exercise program. Eighteen resistance trained males were randomized into two treatment groups. Both groups completed 6 weeks of a high-intensity exercise training program with the first 2 weeks serving as familiarization to resistance training (RT) 3 days per week and completing one high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session. During the final 4 weeks, participants trained 5 days per weeks, three days of RT and two days of HIIT (repeated 30 s all out sprints). All participants consumed a LCHF diet (~25%, ~25%, and ~50% of daily kilocalorie intake coming from CHO, protein, and fat). The supplemented (SUPP) group (n=9) consumed 30 g of CHO during exercise and 40 g of CHO immediately after each exercise session. The remainder of the SUPP groups daily CHO intake came outside of training. The non-supplemented (NONSUPP) group (n=9) consumed an artificially flavored placebo during exercise. The NONSUPP group had the same daily CHO intake as the SUPP group, with the only difference being CHO timing. Dependent variables measured pre-and post-training included back squat and bench press one-repetition maximums, peak oxygen consumption (V̇O2 peak), power output (Wingate test), body composition, fasted glucose, insulin, and testosterone, and gastrointestinal distress (GID) during exercise. Both groups significantly improved back squat and bench press strength, biceps thickness, absolute and relative V̇O2 peak, and power output. Respiratory exchange ratio was significantly lower and time to exhaustion significantly increased during the post V̇O2 peak test. However, there were no changes in resting glucose, insulin, and testosterone or body fat. RT and HIIT caused significant increases in GID, independent of beverage content, with no differences between training. Our results suggest that CHO timing has no impact on adaptations to exercise training, but favorable training adaptations can be made while consuming a LCHF diet.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-25 / The present research is the result of a Vaquejada Simulation Test (VST), developed to evaluate the possible changes ocurring in horses physiological and metabolic adaptations. Were used thirteen horses, however nine were “puxar” horses and three were “esteira” horse.These two groups did different types of exercise. It was evaluated: heart rate, respiratory rate, hematocrit, total plasma protein, glucose, lactate, urea, creatine, triglicerides, total cholesterol and HDL, creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase, glutamate, glutamine and alanine.Samples were collected at: pré-test (fastining sample), immediately after VST (T0), and at 15(T +15), 30 (T +30) and 240 (T +240) minutes after the VST. However “esteira” horses did collection two times after two rounds, T0 C1 and T0 C2. Presented results were submitted to ANOVA (P<0.05) and Tukey Tes(P<0.05). “Puxar” horses presented significant differences in FC, FR, [PPT], [HT], [GLI], [LAC], [ALA] and [CR]. “Esteira” horses presented significant changes (P<0.05) in FC, FR, [PPT], [HT], [GLI], [LAC], [COLT] and [GLN]parameters. The VST demonstrated that horses performed anaerobic exercise, but “puxar” and “esteira” horses spent energy differently, when they were compared. This defferenciation between both groups of horses indicate that they need specific nutrition and training in order to develop their fitness for best performance. / O presente experimento é resultado de um teste padrão de simulação de vaquejada ou TSV, utilizando-se treze cavalos da raça Quarto de Milha (puros e mestiços), com o objetivo de caracterizar o perfil dos metabólitos sangüíneos associados ao armazenamento e a utilização de energia. Do total dos animais testados, nove eram “de puxar” e quatro “de esteira”, idade entre cinco e dez anos, machos e fêmeas, que estavam competindo regularmente. Os eqüinos estavam recebendo concentrados com níveis de garantia máximos de 14% para proteína bruta e 4% para Extrato Etéreo e capim elefante (Pennisetum purpureum). Determinou-se a atividade sérica da Alanina, Glutamina e Glutamato, enzimas (Creatina Quinase e Aspartato aminotransferase), lipídeos, lactato, glicose e uréia, parâmetros clínicos fisiológicos (freqüência cardíaca e respiratória) e variáveis hematológicas, hematócrito e proteína plasmática total. Os valores foram determinados nos momentos pré-teste (jejum), imediatamente após o término da simulação (T0), e com 15 (T +15), 30 (T +30) e 240 (T+240) minutos após a finalização da simulação. Para os eqüinos “de esteira”, existem dois tempos pós-exercício – o T0C1 e T0C2 – pois estes cavalos realizaram duas vezes a corrida. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise da variância para medidas repetidas (one-way ANOVA), O método de Tukey foi utilizado para a comparação múltipla entre as médias, e ambos com nível de significância estabelecido em (P<0,05). Nos cavalos “de puxar”, houve variação significativa na FC, FR, [PPT], [HT], [GLI], [LAC], [ALA] e [CREAT]. Já no TSV dos cavalos “de esteira”, foram registradas variações significativas (P<0,05) na FC, FR, [PPT], [HT], [GLI], [LAC], [COLT] e [GLN]. A simulação assemelhou-se a um exercício de alta intensidade e curta duração, do tipo anaeróbico, e comprovou que os dois tipos de cavalos gastam energia de forma diferenciada, exigindo, portanto, treinamentos e dietas específicos.

The Effects of Caffeine on Jumping Performance and Maximal Strength in Female Collegiate AthletesBurke, Benjamin I., Travis, S. K., Gentles, Jeremy A., Sato, Kimitake, Lang, Henry M., Bazyler, Caleb D. 01 August 2021 (has links)
Caffeine is often used in a variety of forms to enhance athletic performance; however, research regarding caffeine’s effects on strength and power in female athletes is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of caffeine anhydrous (6 mg/kg of body mass) on jumping performance and maximal strength in female collegiate athletes. Eleven athletes (19.7 ± 0.9 yrs; 166.4 ± 10.2 cm, 67.7 ± 9.4 kg) performed two testing sessions separated by one week, and randomly received caffeine or placebo using a double-blind approach. Heart rate, blood pressure, and tympanic temperature were recorded before athletes received each condition, following 60 min of quiet sitting, and directly after performance testing. Athletes were assessed on unweighted and weighted squat jump height (SJH0, SJH20) and countermovement jump height (CMJH0, CMJH20), isometric mid-thigh pull peak force (IPF), and rate of force development from 0–200 ms (RFD200). Resting systolic blood pressure was significantly greater following caffeine administration compared to a placebo (p = 0.017). There were small, significant differences in SJH0 (p = 0.035, g = 0.35), SJH20 (p = 0.002, g = 0.49), CMJH0 (p = 0.015, g = 0.19), and CMJH20 (p < 0.001, g = 0.37) in favor of caffeine over placebo. However, there was no significant difference in IPF (p = 0.369, g = 0.12) and RFD200 (p = 0.235, g = 0.32) between conditions. Therefore, caffeine appears to enhance jumping performance, but not maximal strength in female collegiate athletes.

The Effects of Repeated Anaerobic Bouts on Immune ParametersSivley, James C. 01 August 2009 (has links)
To date, the exercise-induced immune response in has only been evaluated in subjects performing aerobic exercise. The primary purpose of this study is to determine if repeated bouts of anaerobic exercise will induce a similar immune response in human subjects as exhibited by aerobic exercise. Secondary to immune function, an analysis of performance from trial to trial will be made. Nine males between the ages of 18-25 were selected on a volunteer basis to participate in this study. Subjects performed Wingate tests set in 3 series with 120 seconds between trials within series and 405 seconds between series for an exercise duration of 30 minutes. Blood samples were taken again immediately post test, and 1 hour post test and analyzed for cytokine secretion, epinephrine, and Caspase-3. The present study found that repeated bouts of anaerobic exercise did not alter immune function.

Previous issue date: 2012-05-25 / Introduction: Lung cancer is one of the most incident neoplasms in the world representing the main cause of mortality for cancer. Many epidemiologic studies have suggested that physical activity may reduce the risk of lung cancer, other works evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the physical activity in the suppression, remission and reduction of the recurrence of tumors. Objective: To evaluate the effects of aerobic and anaerobic physical activity in the development and the progression of lung cancer. Material and Methods: Lung tumors were induced with a dose of 3mg of Urethane/kg, in 67 male Balb - C type mice, divided in three groups: Group 1 - 24 mice treated with Urethane and without physical activity; Group 2 - 25 mice with Urethane and subjected to aerobic swimming free exercise; Group 3 - 18 mice with urethane, subjected to anaerobic swimming exercise with gradual loading 5 to 20% of body weight. All the animals were sacrificed after 20 weeks, and lung lesions were analyzed. Results: The median number of lesions (nodules and hyperplasia) was 3.0 for group 1, 2.0 for group 2 and 1.5 to 3 (p = 0.052). When compared only the presence or absence of lesion, there was a decrease in the number of lesions in group 3 compared with group 1 (p = 0.03) but not in relation to group 2. There were no metastases or other changes in other organs. Conclusion: The anaerobic physical activity but not aerobical, diminish the incidence of experimental lung tumors. / Introdução: O câncer de pulmão é uma das neoplasias mais incidentes no mundo, sendo a principal causa de mortalidade por câncer. Muitos estudos epidemiológicos têm sugerido que a atividade física pode reduzir o risco do câncer de pulmão, outros trabalhos avaliaram a eficácia da utilização da atividade física na supressão, remissão e redução da recorrência de tumores. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos da atividade física aeróbia e anaeróbia no desenvolvimento e na progressão do câncer de pulmão experimental. Material e Métodos: Os tumores de pulmão foram induzidos com uma dose de 3mg de uretana/kg, em 67 camundongos Balb-C, divididos em três grupos: Grupo 1 - 24 camundongos tratados com uretana e sem atividade física; Grupo 2 - 25 camundongos tratados com uretana e submetidos ao exercício aeróbio em natação; Grupo 3 - 18 camundongos tratados com uretana, submetidos ao exercício anaeróbio em natação com carga gradual de 5 a 20% do peso corporal. Todos os animais foram sacrificados após 20 semanas, e as lesões pulmonares foram analisadas. Resultados: A mediana do número de lesões (nódulos e hiperplasias) foi de 3,0 para o grupo 1, 2,0 para o grupo 2 e 1,5 para o grupo 3 (p = 0,052). Quando comparado apenas a presença ou ausência de lesão, houve uma diminuição no número de lesões no grupo 3 em comparação com o grupo 1 (p = 0,03), mas não em relação ao grupo 2. Não houve metástases ou outras alterações em outros órgãos. Conclusão: A atividade física anaeróbia, mas não a aeróbia, diminuiu a incidência dos tumores de pulmão experimental.
