Företagsbibliotekariers identitet, kompetens och professionsutveckling : Exemplet Astra Zeneca / The identity, competences and professional development of corporate librarians : using Astra Zeneca as an example

Karlén Gramming, Ann-Christin January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the identity, competences and professional development of corporate librarians. I have done an empirical study based on semi structured interviews with 11 information professionals who were working at Astra Zeneca at the time of the re-organizations of the company in 2009 which ultimately led to the closing of the libraries. I have also examined the views on competences and professional development of librarians in general, both in Sweden and in Denmark. I have used Thomas Brante’s theories on profession types as well as Anders Ørom’s theories on librarian identities as my theoretical framework. The study finds that the respondents have a strong sense of identity as librarians. The interviews revealed that corporate librarians can be considered as having higher status compared to other librarians and that it is primarily based on the fact that the compensation is better in the private sector. The interviews also revealed that being service minded, thorough, social as well as of a curious disposition are regarded as key skills among librarians. The study finally concludes that teaching is an important part of the librarian identity and that Ørom’s model in general proved inadequate when applied to corporate information professionals.

The purpose of this paper is to study what happens to the librarian and it´s profession at the public library when it is developed or converted into a Library and Cultural center. This study take bearing on how the librarian experience the difference in working at a public library and a Library and Culture Center. The method used is a semi-structured qualitative interview, and the theoretical framework is Andrew Abbott's System of Profession. The material consists of interviews with five librarians who previously worked in a public library and subsequently in Library and Cultural Center. The findings of the study show that librarians have a positive attitude towards working in a Library and Culture Center and that they to some degree still work with traditional tasks. However, the work in Library and Culture Centers have changed in the sense that it consist of working with programs, e.g. music and author events. Additionally, public education and a closer collaboration with the end user. The study also revealed that the librarians believe in an increase need for more up-to-date knowledge on new technology as a consequence of the user’s new demands and wishes. Furthermore, adding various community services is part of the integration of public libraries and Library and Culture Centers, making it a large meeting-place for the local residents.

Transportbesorgers en werkwerwing : 'n waardegedrewe transformasie geleentheid vir die prokureursprofessie / deur Johannes Wilhelmus Wessels

Wessels, Johannes Wilhelmus January 2004 (has links)
Touting, as practised by conveyancers in the four Northern provinces of South Africa, is reaching alarming proportions. Owing to the institutional nature of the attorneys' profession, rules and regulations are applied to establish and manage the ethical behaviour of members of the profession. The question arises as to whether there could be an alternative way of management with a value system and ethical conduct as the underlying principles. According to the organisational behavioural science, the alternative method is to manage an organisation by means of value driven leadership style. The research questions of this study are: 1. Which teleological and deontological values will be suitable as elements of a shared value system for the attorneys' profession? In order to reach this goal, the following objectives are established: 2. To obtain exhaustive knowledge of the concepts 'values' and 'value-driven' by means of a literature study and empirical research in order to understand the phenomenon touting, as practised in the attorneys' profession. This objective was reached through an investigation of the concepts values and value-driven. The focus was particularly on the following aspects: J the development of the concept values J the principles of values and ethics 4 the division and classification of the concept values 4 the role and application of the concept values in management science and J values and leadership Based on the results of the limited availability sample, the empirical findings were that the respondents are ethically sensitive. It is evident that touting is a deliberate and unconstitutional disregard of instrumental and terminal values, and that the promotion of self-interest leads to the detriment of the principal, the profession and the public. 3. To establish the shared values of the attorneys' profession from the perspective of the deontology and teleology. This objective was reached through a literature study into the concepts value driven and shared values. From this investigation, it is evident that a relationship no doubt exists between terminal and instrumental values on the one hand and teleological and deontological values on the other hand. The investigation further found that specific effective teleological and deontological values are contained in the sources of knowledge of the attorneys' profession. These values can be used to develop a shared value system for the attorneys' profession. The results of the study, based on a limited availability sample indicate that the majority of respondents could not identify the critical value, namely to guard against self-interest. The absence of this value implies touting within the context of this investigation. 4. To identify and describe the ways and means of the transformation of the attorneys' profession from a rule-and-regulation orientation to a value-driven orientation with regard to ethical behaviour. In order to reach this objective, an empirical investigation was undertaken into the perceptions of respondents of a specific availability sample in regard of the existing rules applicable to ethical behaviour and their perception of the Law Societies of South Africa. The empirical investigation in regard to the perceptions show that a substantial portion of the respondents perception of the Law Societies of South Africa is negative - founded on the reality experience that the Law Societies of South Africa is not capable of cracking down on touting. The literature study demonstrates that the attorneys' profession is a learning organisation with an institutional culture. Transformation from a rule-and-regulation orientation to a value-driven orientation in regard to values and ethics, among others, requires a transformation of way of thinking in regard to basic assumptions concerning values and ethics. In summarising, it can be stated that this investigation produced evidence that effective teleological and deontological values are contained in the sources of knowledge of the attorneys' profession, that can be used to create a shared value system for the profession. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2005.

Currie, Susan January 2006 (has links)
Writing Women into the Law in Queensland consists, as well as an exegesis, of profiles of seven significant women in the law in Queensland which have been published in A Woman's Place: 100 years of women lawyers edited by Susan Purdon and Aladin Rahemtula and published by the Supreme Court of Queensland Library in November 2005. Those women are Leneen Forde, Chancellor of Griffith University and former Governor of Queensland; Kate Holmes, Justice of the Supreme Court and now of the Court of Appeal; Leanne Clare, the first female Director of Public Prosecutions; Barbara Newton, the first female Public Defender; Carmel MacDonald, President of the Aboriginal Land Tribunals and the first female law lecturer in Queensland; Fleur Kingham, formerly Deputy President of the land and Resources Tribunal and now Judge of the District Court and Catherine Pirie, the first Magistrate of Torres Strait descent. The accompanying exegesis investigates the development of the creative work out of the tensions between the aims of the work, its political context, the multiple positions of the biographer, and the collaborative and collective nature of the enterprise.

Interaction between state authority and the Chinese architectural profession: a critical analysis of Jianzhu Xuebao

Zhang, Yanjing January 2009 (has links)
In the decade (1992–2001), the Chinese architecture profession, (hereinafter using abbreviation the CAP) has been largely promoted to a higher level under the socialist circumstance. It is pivotal to note that the evolution of the architecture and the profession does not occur as a natural process, but rather as a result of power relations. In effect, the transformation in the architectural field is a result of interplay between many agents, with the state authority sitting as a predominant force amongst many components despite the complexity and complicity. / On the one hand, the CAP has experienced independence, self-improvement and integration into the world through the journey towards a liberalized position. On the other hand, the operation of architectural practice is highly channeled by the state authority, is closely tied to government policies and shaped by government regulations and facilitated by socio-economic dynamics. The state authority, at various levels, affects the direction of the CAP’s development as well as how it is evolving. This is implemented through interrelations not static but dynamic, that are constantly being re-enacted. / In the midst of the range of architectural phenomenon, the thesis focuses on changes of the CAP, and the relationship between the CAP and the state authority in China during a crucial decade of post–Mao reform, as reflected in the publications in Jian Zhu Xue Bao. It is based on a textual analysis of Jian Zhu Xue Bao, and observes the interrelations that occurred or re-occurred through historical review, discourse analysis and case studies. At the conceptual level, the study considers the interaction as that of power and knowledge. / Against the background provided, the dissertation argues that the underlying power–knowledge correlations react in the Chinese architectural field and at the same time; various interactions that drive the development related to the CAP are unfolding in Chinese architectural discourse. Drawing on scholarship concerning power and knowledge, findings are of four kinds related to: (1) the CAP obtained a relative autonomy; (2) the improvement of professional systems and enforcement; (3) the facilitation role of the state authority; (4) integration into international practice and discourse.
