Building as Witness

Mosso, Santiago 21 September 2006 (has links)
A fire station is a building where not too many things happen. But the few that do are either too forgettable or too memorable. This thesis tries to achieve time, innovation and realism. There's a redundancy in this building, in people's actions that makes it memorable. This building is the evidence of my way of thinking architecture. It reflects my memory as student and architect. It shows an undeniable background. It's questioning why buildings don't endure in time, why they are disposable objects. I'm trying to find reasons to make a building respectful, socially involved with its surroundings. The project is a midsize fire station. It answers to an actual necessity to relocate the existing fire station on Prince St. (Alexandria, VA) giving more space for firefighters and better access for two trucks. The new site is an existing parking lot that crosses a whole block from South Washington St. to South Columbus St. between Wilkes St. and Wolfe St. This site gave me the possibility to create a building where trucks can access and leave it without turning or maneuvering too much. / Master of Architecture

[en] EXPERIENCE AND DISCERNMENT: RECEPTION OF THE WORD IN THE POST MODERNITY / [pt] EXPERIÊNCIA E DISCERNIMENTO: RECEPÇÃO DA PALAVRA EM UMA CULTURA PÓS-MODERNA

ALESSANDRO RODRIGUES ROCHA 15 March 2019 (has links)
[en] The purpose of the present thesis is the reflection on the challenges that Contemporary culture brings to Theology of Revelation. To do so, we open the discussion with post-modernity and its purpose to enlarge rationality, in the sense of introducing experience as a valuable way of perceiving reality. We use Gianni Vattimo s and Andres Torres Queiruga s cathegories as Theoretic approaches in order to introduce the dialogue with Theology of Revelation. Then, we establish a dialogue between these authors and the recent discussions on hermeneutic-literary places of meaning, in order to point out the challenge with which post modern culture faces Theology, i/e, the cooperation in the discernment of faith. This last step will take us to a practical-theoretical dislocation where Theology may change its condition of doctrinal tuthorship to another condition of discernment as a source of multiples experiences of christian faith.

It brings as fundamental essence the theologian Andrés Torres Queiruga, that uncovers in modernity a consequence of the main virtues of Christianity. It points horizons to the useful dialogue between Christianity and modernity and contributes to a modern reinterpretation of this religion to it can stand firm and contextualized in its proposal. So it brings a review and actualization of Christianity in the highly regarded categories enabling a modern rereading of the religion so traditional. We concluded that it is appropriate to science of the religion and o theology provides this role, searching for collaborate for that it can occur a new look and a new rethink of the Christianity in the modernity. Only in the view of a new paradigm, the Christianity will be in the dialogue with other religions / Esta tese mostra que as mudanças culturais proporcionadas pela Modernidade possibilitaram a crise do cristianismo.

Theology and contemporary visual art : making dialogue possible

Worley, Taylor January 2010 (has links)
Within the field of theological aesthetics, this project assesses the divide between theological accounts of art and the re-emergence of religious imagery in modern and contemporary art. More specifically, American Protestant theologians and their accounts of visual art will be taken up as a representative set of contemporary theological inquiry in the arts. Under this category, evaluation will be made of three diverse traditions in American Protestant thought: Paul Tillich and Liberal Protestantism, Francis Schaeffer and the Neo-Calvinists, and the open evangelical accounts of Nicholas Wolterstorff and William Dyrness. With respect to modern and contemporary visual art, this evaluation judges the degree to which theologians have understood the primary concepts and dominant narratives of various modernisms and postmodernisms of art since the end of the nineteenth century, recognised the watershed moments in the lineage of the twentieth century avant-garde, and acknowledged the influence of critical theory not only upon the contemporary discourse in aesthetics and art production but also in the social reception of art. In tracing the re-emergence of religious imagery in modern and contemporary art, this project takes up three diverse traditions: the Crucifixions of Francis Bacon and the memento mori art of Damien Hirst, the ‘re-enchantment’ of art in the work of Joseph Beuys, and the art of ‘False Blasphemy’ associated with lapsed Catholics like Rober Gober and Andres Serrano. By assessing what theologians have written concerning visual art and the surprising return of certain religious imagery in modern and contemporary art, this study will intimate a new way forward in a mutually beneficial dialogue for art and religious belief.

Bridging the Broadband Divide through Universal Service Funds : Key Principles for Broadband Connectivity Projects in Underserved Areas

Joshi, Raoul, Hammarström, Fredrik January 2013 (has links)
The rapid emergence of broadband, or always-on Internet, during the course of the last decade, has increased the importance of the so- called information society in urban and industrialized societies world- wide. Liberalized information and communications technology (ICT) market forces worldwide have however failed to supply these services to rural and low-income regions resulting in the so-called digital divide. One financial tool, adopted by many developing nations to drive broadband investments in underserved areas, is the universal service fund (USF), a public fund mainly levying its resources from ICT market players. USFs have previously been used to fund telecom networks but with the growing importance of broadband, structural and regulatory discrepancies are preventing USFs from adequately supporting broadband investments. Currently, little up-to-date academic theory exists within this field; thus, this thesis serves to outline principles that policy-makers and regulators need to consider when designing or reforming universal service fund mechanisms. The research is based on a series of qualitative country case studies investigating policy, procedural, and executional aspects related to USFs and rural broadband. Publicly available material has been complemented with interviews of stakeholders from various levels to establish a holistic empirical base upon which conclusions have been drawn. The conclusions outline principles governing public involvement in USFs, roles played by various stakeholders in the broadband ecosystem, and strategies for rural broadband network deployment.

Transformational mission as a catalyst to build sustainable peace in Colombia

Cardenas, David Rivera 10 1900 (has links)
Since the time of colonialism the Colombian territory has experienced many problems, which brought a lot of instability in society throughout its history. Colombia has been bleeding all these years, but especially in the time known as “The Violence”. With the creation of the Guerrilla group FARC, of Paramilitary organisations, and Drug Cartels, the problems were intensified. Different attempts to find a solution have unfortunately failed, as is shown over a period of history. This paper argues that to deal with such conflicts there is need for an alternative concept for building sustainable peace. The model of John Paul Lederach, “Professor of International Peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame“, is described as a possible solution that goes beyond what has been achieved by the peace efforts of President Andrés Pastrana. The Churches, both Catholic and Evangelical, have a role to play in building peace as part of a Transformational Mission effort. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th.
