Heat Transfer Analysis on the Applications to Heat Exchangers

Gundra, Raghu Lakshman, Medapati, Jagadeesh reddy January 2021 (has links)
A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more fluids, at different temperatures in thermal contact. They are widely used in aerospace, chemical industries, power plants, refineries, HVAC refrigeration, and in many industries. The optimal design and efficient operation of the heat exchanger and heat transfer network plays an important role in industry in improving efficiencies and to reduce production cost and energy consumption. In this paper, significance of shape of inner pipe of double pipe heat exchanger was analyzed with respect to triangular, hexagonal and octagonal shaped inner pipes. The performance of double pipe heat exchangers was investigated with and without dent pattern using CFD analysis in ANSYS and efficient heat transfer results are identified from CFD outputs. On basis of literature review, few factors influencing the efficiency of heat exchanger and method to improve the efficiency are discussed.

De la ville décidée à la ville vécue : Émergence et croissances des petites villes indiennes / From the decided town to the living one : Emergence and growth of small Indian towns

Bordagi, Julien 20 March 2015 (has links)
This thesis of Geography enriches the theoretical corpus of urban, from the study of threesmall towns in Tamil Nadu. Three approaches of the small Indian towns are developed. Àpolitical-institutional approach gives the framework of what is called the decided town; thetown as it is conceived by planners at all scales from the ward members to national policies. The second approach is quantitative; it aims to describe the economic and demographicdynamics of small towns across India. À multivariate analysis is developed to classifydistricts based on their profile. This analysis is coupled with a classification of small towns inthree types thanks to a GIS analysis: the ones located on major corridor of development, theones located in a metropolitan area and the last ones in unpolarized areas. The three casestudies fall into this classification and illustrate the diversity of dynamics in which areembedded the small towns. These dynamics affect the space of representation of theinhabitants which is named the perceived town. Àt the crossroads of the perceived town, thedecided town and the material town a living town is emerging which could structure moreefficient policies.

On Spectrum Sensing for Secondary Operation in Licensed Spectrum : Blind Sensing, Sensing Optimization and Traffic Modeling

Hamid, Mohamed January 2015 (has links)
There has been a recent explosive growth in mobile data consumption. This, in turn, imposes many challenges for mobile services providers and regulators in many aspects. One of these primary challenges is maintaining the radio spectrum to handle the current and upcoming expansion in mobile data traffic. In this regard, a radio spectrum regulatory framework based on secondary spectrum access is proposed as one of the solutions for the next generation wireless networks. In secondary spectrum access framework, secondary (unlicensed) systems coexist with primary (licensed) systems and access the spectrum on an opportunistic base. In this thesis, aspects related to finding the free of use spectrum portions - called spectrum opportunities - are treated. One way to find these opportunities is spectrum sensing which is considered as an enabler of opportunistic spectrum access. In particular, this thesis investigates some topics in blind spectrum sensing where no priori knowledge about the possible co-existing systems is available. As a standalone contribution in blind spectrum sensing arena, a new blind sensing technique is developed in this thesis. The technique is based on discriminant analysis statistical framework and called spectrum discriminator (SD). A comparative study between the SD and some existing blind sensing techniques was carried out and showed a reliable performance of the SD. The thesis also contributes by exploring sensing parameters optimization for two existing techniques, namely, energy detector (ED) and maximum-minimum eigenvalue detector (MME). For ED, the sensing time and periodic sensing interval are optimized to achieve as high detection accuracy as possible. Moreover, a study of sensing parameters optimization in a real-life coexisting scenario, that is, LTE cognitive femto-cells, is carried out with an objective of maximizing cognitive femto-cells throughput. In association with this work, an empirical statistical model for LTE channel occupancy is accomplished. The empirical model fits the channels' active and idle periods distributions to a linear combination of multiple exponential distributions. For the MME, a novel solution for the filtering problem is introduced. This solution is based on frequency domain rectangular filtering. Furthermore, an optimization of the observation bandwidth for MME with respect to the signal bandwidth is analytically performed and verified by simulations. After optimizing the parameters for both ED and MME, a two-stage fully-blind self-adapted sensing algorithm composed of ED and MME is introduced. The combined detector is found to outperform both detectors individually in terms of detection accuracy with an average complexity lies in between the complexities of the two detectors. The combined detector is tested with measured TV and wireless microphone signals. The performance evaluation in the different parts of the thesis is done through measurements and/or simulations. Active measurements were performed for sensing performance evaluation. Passive measurements on the other hand were used for LTE downlink channels occupancy modeling and to capture TV and wireless microphone signals. /
QC 20150209

Development of temporal phase unwrapping algorithms for depth-resolved measurements using an electronically tuned Ti:Sa laser

Pallikarakis, Christos A. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with (a) the development of full-field, multi-axis and phase contrast wavelength scanning interferometer, using an electronically tuned CW Ti:Sa laser for the study of depth resolved measurements in composite materials such as GFRPs and (b) the development of temporal phase unwrapping algorithms for depth re-solved measurements. Item (a) was part of the ultimate goal of successfully extracting the 3-D, depth-resolved, constituent parameters (Young s modulus E, Poisson s ratio v etc.) that define the mechanical behaviour of composite materials like GFRPs. Considering the success of OCT as an imaging modality, a wavelength scanning interferometer (WSI) capable of imaging the intensity AND the phase of the interference signal was proposed as the preferred technique to provide the volumetric displacement/strain fields (Note that displacement/strain fields are analogous to phase fields and thus a phase-contrast interferometer is of particular interest in this case). These would then be passed to the VFM and yield the sought parameters provided the loading scheme is known. As a result, a number of key opto-mechanical hardware was developed. First, a multiple channel (x6) tomographic interferometer realised in a Mach-Zehnder arrangement was built. Each of the three channels would provide the necessary information to extract the three orthogonal displacement/strain components while the other three are complementary and were included in the design in order to maximize the penetration depth (sample illuminated from both sides). Second, a miniature uniaxial (tensile and/or compression) loading machine was designed and built for the introduction of controlled and low magnitude displacements. Last, a rotation stage for the experimental determination of the sensitivity vectors and the re-registration of the volumetric data from the six channels was also designed and built. Unfortunately, due to the critical failure of the Ti:Sa laser data collection using the last two items was not possible. However, preliminary results at a single wavelength suggested that the above items work as expected. Item (b) involved the development of an optical sensor for the dynamic monitoring of wavenumber changes during a full 100 nm scan. The sensor is comprised of a set of four wedges in a Fizeau interferometer setup that became part of the multi-axis interferometer (7th channel). Its development became relevant due to the large amount of mode-hops present during a full scan of the Ti:Sa source. These are associated to the physics of the laser and have the undesirable effect of randomising the signal and thus preventing successful depth reconstructions. The multi-wedge sensor was designed so that it provides simultaneously high wavenumber change resolution and immunity to the large wavenumber jumps from the Ti:Sa. The analysis algorithms for the extraction of the sought wavenumber changes were based on 2-D Fourier transform method followed by temporal phase unwrapping. At first, the performance of the sensor was tested against that of a high-end commercial wavemeter for a limited scan of 1nm. A root mean square (rms) difference in measured wavenumber shift between the two of ~4 m-1 has been achieved, equivalent to an rms wavelength shift error of ~0.4 pm. Second, by resampling the interference signal and the wavenumber-change axis onto a uniformly sampled k-space, depth resolutions that are close to the theoretical limits were achieved for scans of up to 37 nm. Access of the full 100 nm range that is characterised by wavelength steps down to picometers level was achieved by introducing a number of improvements to the original temporal phase unwrapping algorithm reported in ref [1] tailored to depth resolved measurements. These involved the estimation and suppression of intensity background artefacts, improvements on the 2-D Fourier transform phase detection based on a previously developed algorithm in ref [2] and finally the introduction of two modifications to the original TPU. Both approaches are adaptive and involve signal re-referencing at regular intervals throughout the scan. Their purpose is to compensate for systematic and non-systematic errors owing to a small error in the value of R (a scaling factor applied to the lower sensitivity wedge phase-change signal used to unwrap the higher sensitivity one), or small changes in R with wavelength due to the possibility of a mismatch in the refractive dispersion curves of the wedges and/or a mismatch in the wedge angles. A hybrid approach combining both methods was proposed and used to analyse the data from each of the four wedges. It was found to give the most robust results of all the techniques considered, with a clear Fourier peak at the expected frequency, with significantly reduced spectral artefacts and identical depth resolutions for all four wedges of 2.2 μm measured at FWHM. The ability of the phase unwrapping strategy in resolving the aforementioned issues was demonstrated by successfully measuring the absolute thickness of four fused silica glasses using real experimental data. The results were compared with independent micrometer measurements and showed excellent agreement. Finally, due to the lack of additional experimental data and in an attempt to justify the validity of the proposed temporal phase unwrapping strategy termed as the hybrid approach, a set of simulations that closely matched the parameters characterising the real experimental data set analysed were produced and were subsequently analysed. The results of this final test justify that the various fixes included in the hybrid approach have not evolved to solve the problems of a particular data set but are rather of general nature thereby, highlighting its importance for PC-WSI applications concerning the processing and analysis of large scans.

In this master's thesis we have proceeded with a semantic study of the designation (designação, in Portuguese) of the words integration and progress from the enunciations contained in the documents which propose the constitution of the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas). We have worked in the semantic-enunciative perspective that takes the relationship amongst language, history and subject for granted. This way, we could establish a relationship with the theory of the French Discourse Analysis. The concept of enunciation as an event, as well as the concept of designation, was fundamental to our analyses. The mode by which we have conducted our analyses was through the reading of the procedures of rewriting, and, furthermore, through the procedures of articulation in order to get to the semantics domains of determination (domínios semânticos de determinação, in Portuguese) of the word being put into question. We have still analysed the word integration as a nominalised enunciation, and, through this, we were able to worka bit with the issue of the memory. Knowing the senses of such words in these texts represents a mode of trying to understand what the designation of these words brings to the purpose of the public relations settled at the FTAA. From the analysis of these words, we have discussed about the relationship of enunciative litigation between the FTAA and the Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America and Caribbean (ALBA, in Spanish). This is a political litigation characterised as a confrontation and a conflict between a normativity of a statement and another one that fits it as its counterpart / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

Ett fredsprojekt i förändring? : En idéanalys av vilken typ av fred EKSG och ENP avsåg att främja

Yves, Michal January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is that through idea analysis and ideal types examines if the EU changed the kind of peace they seek to promote to confirm or falsify Magnus Jernecks thesis that the meaning of peace change depend on the context. I will be making two comparison points, the first at the peace projects start in the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and the second in the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). My ideal types that I have chosen are the idealistic perspective of peace, the justice peace perspective and the perspective of balance of power which has constituted a main line when it comes to issues of war and peace. My research question is linked to my ideal types and reads - is the peace that ECSC and ENP promote: 1) a peace of the idealistic perspective, 2) a peace of the justice perspective, 3) a peace of the balance of power perspective. I seek the answer of these questions in two types of documents. The Schuman declaration which is directed to answer the question ECSC and the report Wider Europe – Neighbourhood: a new framework for relations with our Eastern and Southern neighbors which is directed to answer the question ENP. The results of the study shows that the EU was intended to promote a different kind of peace within the ECSC than the ENP. The ECSC seek to promote a peace of justice and a peace of the balance of power perspective. With ENP they seek to promote a peace of justice and the idealistic peace perspective. This can give a result that EU loses its trustworthiness as a peace-builder if one is not clear when this change occurs.

The Lived Experiences of Adult Children of Mid to Later-life Parental Divorce: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

Collins Ricketts, Joan 01 January 2015 (has links)
This study examined the lived experiences of adult children of mid-later life parental divorce. It was designed and conducted to address the gap in the current literature regarding this phenomenon. The experiences of 5 Adult Children of Divorce (ACD) ages 25 to 45, who experienced mid-later life parental divorce, were examined using in-depth semi-structured interviews. The researcher employed an interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) of which the findings illustrated various outcomes for adults experiencing their parents’ mid-later life divorce. The results of this study showed that parents’ waiting until the children are “grown” does not mitigate potentially detrimental outcomes for these “adult children.” Some of these concerns shared by the ACDs interviewed included: dealing with the shock of the divorce, the acrimonious parental relationships post divorce, feeling the need to choose sides, effects of the divorce on the ACDs' children, among others. Future studies and implications for the field of marriage and family therapy were offered.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Carolina Beatriz Ferreira Niero.pdf: 736609 bytes, checksum: c7df52081b7fa4baed6684b3450e53a2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-10-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study aimed to analyze published studies in behavior analysis in the clinical area in Brazil, in order to characterize the evolution of this area. The data for this characterization were taken from a journal and two collections of behavioral approach, as well as two non-specific journals in the area. They are: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Comportamental e Cognitiva (RBTCC); Sobre Comportamento e Cognição (SCC); Ciência do Comportamento: Conhecer e Avançar: Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa; e Temas em Psicologia. The selection of articles/chapters to be analyzed is given based on a set of keywords that the área encopassed clinical and behavioral approach. A more general characterization of the first publications on clinical behavior analysis was based on all articles/chapters of the selected publications, and a more specific characterization used the articles from the journals: Revista Brasileira de Terapia Comportamental e Cognitiva (RBTCC); Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa; e Temas em Psicologia. Through analysis of 337 articles/chapters found in the period 1991 to 2010, it was possible to observe the growing number of publications on clinical behavior over the years. This growth was largely driven by two vehicles of the behavioral approach: the collection, Sobre Comportamento e Cognição and the journal Revista Brasileira de Terapia Comportamental e Cognitiva (RBTCC), whose publication marks the beginning of early stages of growth in the volume of published texts in the area. In relation to the authors, it was possible to identify a small group which wasresponsible for the development of publications of the clinical area in Brazil, concentrating most of the production of the área. Among the topics covered in the articles analyzed, the subject verbal behavior seems to have gained the interest of authors in the area, as well as those involving psychiatric disorders and diseases, and therapeutic relationship. An analysis of the references of the selected articles allowed to emphasize the journals: Temas em Psicologia and Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa, which were responsible for the publication of articles of great use in the clinical area, as well as international journals: Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, o Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology e o Behavior Therapy. Even through the analysis of references, it is remarkable the influence of B. F. Skinner and authors such as Robert Kohlenberg and Steven Hayes, who proposed the model of therapy: Functional Analytic Psychotherapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy / O presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar trabalhos publicados em análise do comportamento na área clínica, no Brasil, de modo a caracterizar a evolução dessa área.
