Aspects of the genetic relationship of the Korean and Japanese languages

I offer evidence from a variety of fields in order to strengthen the hypothesis that Japonic and Korean are linguistically genetically related to one another. Non-linguistic evidence supports the hypothesis that the Japonic language was introduced into the Japanese Archipelago approximately 2,500 years ago over a thousand year period, where a culturally and technologically advanced group began migrating into the Japanese Archipelago from the Korean Peninsula through Northern Kyushu. A constant and steady influx of Continental culture, language, and people, resulted in the near-complete extinction of the original language. The linguistic evidence comes from Middle Korean texts, written in the Silla-descended language of the 15th century-the kingdom that overwhelmed the Puyo, Koguryo, and Paekche territory and languages, thought to be more closely related to Japonic-and 8th century Old Japanese texts. I hypothesize that there were two "thalossocracies": one with lzumo and Silla, and the second with Yamato and Paekche/Kaya Japonic elements were incorporated into the Silla language when Silla folded Kaya and Paekche into the new kingdom. In the same way, Yamato incorporated Silla-type elements into itself when Yamato overtook Izumo. I introduce evidence that supports Serafim's Labiovelar hypothesis; i.e. MK k : OJ p, reconstructing PKJ *kw1. I also found a "reverse" correspondence set: that is, MKp : OJ k, for which I reconstruct *kw2. I hypothesize that this reverse correspondence is due to dialect borrowing. When Silla conquered the Korean Peninsula, it incorporated into itself Kaya, Paekche, and Koguryo, which were closer in genetic relationship to Japonic, and therefore would have (*kw > ) p. As these three languages were overcome, dialect borrowing likely occurred, which means that words with p instead of (*kw > ) k were borrowed into Silla, sometimes replacing and sometimes forming doublets with words retaining k. The second posited case of dialect borrowing occurred when Yamato overtook lzumo; since Silla had close contact with lzumo, words with (*kw > ) k were borrowed into Yamato, replacing, and sometimes forming doublets with, some words with p. Further research will surely lead to more understanding of the measurable effects of dialect borrowing and Proto-Koreo-Japonic. / Thesis (Ph. In a paradoxical way, the phenomena which are not explained in an organic way constitutes themselves a great challenge and are often described by the "somatization" phenomenon, name attributed to a research and support program to the population, and also the purpose of this study. If in the context mentioned, the treatment of these sufferings from an organicist and unidirectional point of view proves to be insufficient, an incorporation of psychotherapies and psychoanalysis in the daily treatment of clients also presents difficulties and dilemmas. The theoretical part of this thesis aims to summarize the knowledge of anthropological measurements, national anthropological research, and scoliosis from the available sources of information. The research part of the thesis consists in measurements of height, weight and Adams' angle of 540 primary school pupils in Hoštka and Štětí. The resulting data are compared with national anthropological research of 2001. The measured values are further statistically analyzed and confronted with the data in scientific literature. PERCEPTUAL DIALECTOLOGY OF NEW ENGLAND: VIEWS FROM MAINE AND THE WEB

Research into the dialects of the New England states (Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Vermont) has traditionally split the region into distinct geographic regions based upon variations in production, primarily along an East-West border. Generally, such regions have been considered relatively stable in terms of their variation (Labov, Ash and Boberg 2006); however, recent work in the area has found that the traditional dialect boundaries have begun to shift (c.f. Stanford, Leddy-Cecere and Baclawski 2012). Such research has focused on very specific regional changes in production, ignoring the perceptual salience of the features observed to be in flux. To date very few studies (Ravindranath and Fernandes 2014) have examined how New Englanders perceive the regional divisions, with emphasis on the collected regions while not focusing specifically on how regions view each other in terms of difference and similarity. This study examines regional perceptions of dialects in the New England states as seen by a small subset of New Englanders, predominantly residents of Maine and Massachusetts, through two studies: one conducted using a new web-based approach and another using the traditional pen-and-paper method of perceptual dialectology. Speakers have been asked to identify areas with differing varieties through the draw-a-map task (Preston 1989). These responses are then aggregated using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), contrasting results between the two methods. Results are used to identify areas of salient dialectal features across New England, informing contemporary and future research into language change in a region considered as stable. Additionally, methodological concerns and advances are addressed.

Cries from <em>The Jungle</em>: The Dialogic Linguistic Landscape of the Migrant and Refugee Camps in Calais, France

Since 1999, migrants and refugees from across the Middle East and Northeastern Africa have squatted in makeshift camps in and around the strategic port city of Calais, France, hoping for the opportunity to stow away on a ferry or lorry to England. The inhabitants of these camps seek to engage the world in a dialogue, and although they speak a variety of languages, the voices the refugees and migrants in The Jungle of Calais raise through their protest placards and graffiti are more homogeneous. Like in many other protests, the languages of these messages are universal; they are French and English, the languages of their location, their desired destination, and of the world that they hope is watching. The data for this study are from still images freely available through Getty Images Embed Service. Using the techniques of linguistic landscapes, this paper analyzes the linguistic material of The Jungle. Like other recent works on the linguistic landscapes of protest, this analysis challenges the idea that territory is a fixed place or space (Kasanga, 2014), asserting rather that the migrants/refugees are co-creating a collective space that exists more through their raised voices, and less in the physical space they temporarily inhabit.

Cette recherche propose d'étudier la place et le rôle des grandeurs dans la construction des différents domaines mathématiques et de leurs interrelations au collège. Elle s'inscrit dans le cadre de la théorie anthropologique du didactique développée par Yves Chevallard. Une analyse épistémologique des savoirs mathématiques relatifs aux grandeurs nous a permis d'examiner les choix institutionnels et leurs effets sur l'enseignement. Nous complétons ce travail par une étude écologique et praxéologique des programmes, et des documents institutionnels actuels pour caractériser les rapports institutionnels aux grandeurs. Une méthodologie du type clinique est mise en œuvre pour analyser le savoir enseigné concernant les grandeurs dans des classes de 6e et 5e en France. Pour cette étude, nous nous sommes inspirés des travaux de Bronner à propos du numérique pour élaborer un outil, le filtre des grandeurs, qui sert à décrire et analyser les pratiques relatives aux grandeurs au collège. Plus particulièrement, nous nous sommes intéressés aux interrelations entre les grandeurs, le fonctionnel et le numérique en prenant le cas de la proportionnalité, et au fonctionnement interne des grandeurs en étudiant l'espèce de grandeur aire.La recherche met en évidence que l'introduction des grandeurs en tant que domaine d'étude dans les programmes du collège de 2005 crée chez les professeurs des difficultés dans l'intégration des nouvelles technologies et théories pour un enseignement adéquat des grandeurs. De plus, elle montre une certaine stabilisation de la place et la fonction des grandeurs dans la construction d'autres domaines mathématiques, mais met en évidence des difficultés au niveau des interrelations entre ces domaines. / This research aims at studying the place and role of magnitudes in the development of different mathematics fields and in their interrelations at school. Our perspective is that of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic developed by Yves Chevallard. An epistemological analysis of the mathematical knowledge related to magnitudes allowed us to examine certain institutional choices and their impact on teaching. This work is complemented by an ecological and praxeological study of the curricula, school textbooks and corporate documents to characterize the institutions' relations to magnitudes. A clinical type methodology was used to analyze the knowledge concerning magnitudes taught in grade 6 and 7 in France. This study was inspired by Bronner's work about the numeric to develop a tool - a magnitudes filter - which is used to describe and analyze the practices related to magnitudes at school. In particular, this research focused on the interrelations between the magnitudes, the functional and the numeric in the case of proportionality and on the internal functioning of magnitudes in the case of the area magnitude.As a result, this research shows that the introduction of magnitudes as a study domain in school programs of 2005 creates difficulties among professors in integrating new technologies and theories for an adequate teaching of magnitudes. Moreover, it shows a certain stabilization of the place and role of magnitudes in the development of different mathematics fields, but difficulties concerning the interrelations between these areas.

Racismo contra negros: um estudo sobre o preconceito sutil / Racism against blacks: a research about a subtle prejudice

O racismo é um tema pouco abordado na psicologia, no entanto, tratase de um problema social sério. Pesquisas têm observado, em vários países, a frequência cada vez maior da forma sutil de preconceito em contraposição à diminuição da forma mais explícita. Nesse sentido, nosso objetivo foi compreender melhor essa nova fisionomia do racismo o preconceito sutil. Uma parte do estudo foi realizada no Brasil e outra, na Espanha. Dentre os vários grupos humanos possíveis de ser alvo de práticas racistas, enfocamos o racismo contra negros no Brasil e contra gitanos na Espanha. Embora existam diferenças na história de cada grupo, é comum entre eles o fato de estar há séculos em território brasileiro e espanhol, respectivamente, e persistirem as práticas discriminatórias contra eles. A presente pesquisa combinou métodos quantitativo (escalas de preconceito sutil e flagrante de Pettigrew e Meertens) e qualitativo (entrevistas). No Brasil, 235 alunos responderam ao questionário e 71 estudantes, na Espanha. Destes, 15 foram entrevistados na pesquisa realizada no Brasil e 4, na Espanha. Para a análise dos dados quantitativos, foram feitas provas estatísticas. Para as entrevistas, foram formuladas categorias de análise. Os dados dos questionários apontaram: (1) maior facilidade dos espanhóis em declarar o racismo; (2) os homens mostraram maior preconceito do que as mulheres, tanto no Brasil quanto na Espanha; (3) houve maior expressão de preconceito sutil do que de preconceito flagrante, nas amostras dos dois países; (4) aproximadamente 75% da amostra brasileira se identifica como branca, mas apenas cerca de um terço tem ascendência branca. Ou seja, grande parte dos participantes são mestiços, mas se identificam como brancos. As entrevistas trouxeram mais elementos para a compreensão do racismo, apontando algumas questões da dinâmica do preconceito racial, tais como o problema da sutileza na discriminação; as brincadeiras racistas; a culpabilização da vítima; a responsabilização do negro para a mudança de sua situação e, com isso, a recusa às propostas de ação afirmativa; a falsa neutralidade na abordagem do tema racial; e, finalmente, a não percepção da racialização presente. As falas não racistas foram poucas e não chegaram a compor uma categoria em separado. Porém, foi possível também estudar a admissão do próprio racismo atitude essa que aponta um caminho para a superação do preconceito racial. Concluímos, enfim, que a presente tese trouxe contribuições para a reflexão do racismo sutil. Sugerimos outras pesquisas e intervenções a fim de que a reflexão sobre esse problema social favoreça a superação do preconceito nas relações humanas / Racism is a subject rarely discussed in psychology, however, this is a serious social problem. In several countries, studies have pointed an increasing frequency of subtle prejudice, despite the decreased incidence of more explicit forms. Our goal in this work was to understand this new face of racism the subtle one. The study was conducted in two countries, Brazil and Spain. Among the various human groups possible to be the target of racist practices, we focus on racism against blacks in Brazil and against gitanos in Spain. Although there are differences in the history of each group, it is common to continue discriminatory practices against them, although they live in Brazilian and Spanish territory for centuries. This research combined quantitative methods (scales of subtle and blatant prejudice of Pettigrew and Meertens) and qualitative (interviews). The questionnaire had been answered by 235 students in Brazil and 71 in Spain. From this sample, we interviewed 15 Brazilian and 4 in Spanish. For the analysis of quantitative data, statistical tests were made. For the interviews were formulated categories of analysis. The questionnaire´s data indicated: (1) the Spanish declare prejudice easier; (2) men showed greater prejudice than women, both in Brazil and in Spain; (3) the prejudice subtle is higher than blatant in the both samples; (4) about 75% of the Brazilian sample is selfidentified as white, but only about a third has white ancestry. In other words, most of the participants are mixed, but identify themselves as white. The interviews revealed more elements to the understanding of racism, pointing out some issues about dynamics of racial prejudice. For instance, the problem of subtlety discrimination; racist jokes; blaming the victim; rejection of affirmative action proposals due attributing to the blacks, the responsibility for change their own situation; false neutrality in approaches about racial subjects; and the nonperception of presence of racialization. The nonracist statements were few and insufficient to compose a specific category. Despite these results, we studied the admission of their own racism an attitude that points a way to overcome racial prejudice. We conclude that this thesis has made contributions to the reflection of subtle racism. We suggest further research and interventions with the goal of reflection on social problem pointed here, thereby the overcoming of prejudice in human relations

This study seeks to understand the intensity of the anti-indigenous speech presented by the anthropological counter report in the administrative procedure of identification and demarcation of Ñande Ru Marangatu and present it as a communicative event that reveals what is beneath the suspension of the effects of the ratification decree / Demarcar terras indígenas no Brasil é tarefa historicamente complicada. Tratando-se do estado do Mato Grosso do Sul é tarefa que dobra em seus desafios. Ñande Ru Marangatu é terra de índio Kaiowa no município de Antônio João/MS junto à fronteira do Paraguai. Homologada como terra indígena depois de um longo procedimento administrativo, os Kaiowa de Marangatu viram ser suspensos os efeitos do decreto homologatório pela MS 25463/DF sobrando àquela comunidade as beiras das estradas de MS. Ñande Ru Marangatu é um típico caso de conduta racista e descaso pela sociedade brasileira frente aos povos indígenas, de forma geral. Poetics, Performance, and Translation in Eastern Cherokee Language Revitalization

This dissertation examines the creation and performance of expressive vocal practices by Eastern Cherokees as they seek to revitalize the Cherokee language in North Carolina in the Eastern part of the United States. The Eastern Band of Cherokee of Indians is facing the impending loss of its heritage language due to a community-wide shift to English. To combat this loss, the community now operates a Cherokee language immersion school, New Kituwah Academy. This dissertation is based on ethnographic and linguistic data collected during the researcher’s five years as the music and art instructor at New Kituwah. Indigenous epistemologies of language and poetics are brought into discourse with methodological and analytical approaches in ethnomusicology and linguistic anthropology. Performative vocal practices are processes through which Eastern Cherokee speakers negotiate what it means to be “modern Kituwah citizens.” Contemporary Cherokee voices emerge from the ambiguities of poetic “language play” in speech and song. “Voice” is both a metaphorical representation of a Cherokee sovereign and an actual materiality produced by embodied, speaking, and singing subjects. The translation of new popular song texts into Cherokee is likewise explored as “working” or “playing” with language. Translation is a poetic process imbedded within broader socio-cultural systems of meaning and perception (ontologies). Translation and vocal play destabilize semantic connections and open up the possibility for alternative interpretations and meanings; they allow for sovereignty to flourish as Cherokees reimagine and reshape themselves and their world.
