The empirical validity of an assessment battery for apprentice electrician students / M.A. van Stelten

Van Stelten, Margaretha Aletta January 2008 (has links)
Selection and selection procedures play a key role in the ability of organisations to compete successfully in the complex global and local environment. South Africa is experiencing a serious artisinal and technical skill shortage. Given the unemployment issues and the quest for people to fill the skill shortage gap it is important for organizations to find possible solutions to ensure that they stay competitive and effective in the labour market. Research suggests that at least 12 500 artisans need to be produced each year from 2006 to 2010 to meet the demand for skilled workers. To address above mentioned challenge organizations have to develop strategies to assist them to select individuals with the best chance to succeed in training. Unfortunately, the solution is not simple as organisations have a multitude of influences and pressures which affect their decisions regarding selection procedures. Selection of individuals is becoming an increasingly complex science as organisations have to select a capable and representative workforce. They must thus select candidates that are most likely to benefit from what is offered educationally, meet the requirements stipulated in South Africa's Labour legislation, and will perform most successfully in the specific trade. Bad practice can lead to costly litigation. The objectives of this mini-dissertation were to assess the empirical validity of the Technical Test Battery (TTB), as ability test and the Learning Potential Computerised Adaptive Test (LPCAT) as learning potential test as predictors of academic success of first year apprentice electrician students at a South African technical college serving a mining community. The study explored the current local employment issues that affect selection for training in the technical fields. The difference between the measurement of cognitive ability and learning potential were examined and the nature of the constructs of cognitive ability and that of learning potential were discussed. In the empirical study one of the objectives was to determine whether there was a relationship between the TTB and the LPCAT as two different predictors of the academic success of first yar apprentice electrician students. The difference in the empirical (predictive) validity of the two psychometric selection instruments, if only one of the tests as opposed to if both were used in combination, were examined. Another objective was to determine if there were any differences regarding the scores on the TTB and LPCAT of students from the designated group as opposed to that of students from non-designated groups. Finally this study explored whether the TTB and LPCAT were valid predictors to be used as selection instruments for apprentice electrician students in the South African context The research method consisted of a literature review and an empirical study. The empirical validity of the two predictor tests was validated in terms of the accuracy with which the selection instruments predicted the students' future performance. This research can be categorized as descriptive quantitative research. The TTB and LPCAT scores of a sample of 89 selected apprentice electricians were compared with the number of attempts they used to pass a phase test. Data was analysed by means of descriptive statistics. Pearsons Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, t-tests, ANOVAs as well as discriminant analysis were also used to reach the research objective. Statistically significant relationships were found between the predictor and criterion variables. The results confirm that the TTB and LPCAT are indeed empirical valid tests that can be used in the selection of apprentice electricians. / Thesis (M.A. (Industrial Psychology))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

The effort to teach literacy and educate the people, following the principles of the present nationalism in vogue, has taken even more precise definitions. In this context, the school takes one of the most important roles, and especially the apprentice ones, have the challenge to teach literacy and discipline the fortune disadvantages. From that point of view, this research whose title is Mente amore pro patria docere: the School of Apprentice Craftsmen at Paraíba and the formation of useful citizens to the nation, is constituted by a reflexion on the trajectory of one of these apprentice schools, which is located in the city of Parahyba (present João Pessoa), between 1909, when it was created, and 1942, when it did not exist anymore, after a whole process of remodelations promoved by the Federal Government. In this space we defend the thesis that the School of Appretices at Paraíba, whose creation aimed to professionalize the disadvantaged of the luck and to produce disciplined workers, was a place of learning knowledge and inculcation of behaviors where socially excluded young people had their bodies and minds educated by the logic of the rationality of the work and of construction of the Brazilian nationality. The thesis is based on the theory of the historic materialism (MARX, 1980; MARX; ENGELS, 1984; 2004; LUKÁCS, 2003; PINTO, 1969), and in the use of the category of totatlity, dialoguing, still with the idea about school culture when we consider the closing approach of the internal functioning and the everyday in the institution analysed here. In this perspective, we consider the suggestions of Goodson (1995), Julia (2001), Frago (1995; 2005) e Souza (2000; 2010) who assure that the internal processes at the school cannot be ignored. In the present analysis we think about the set of transformations which make the changes in the Brazilian education and, more particularly, in the School of Apprentice Craftsmen at Paraíba as a place where these changes took place even being marked by conflicts and tensions. In this way we have worked with all the available legislation about professional education in the period (creation of the apprentice schools, remodelations and their extinction) as well as the management reports. Articulately we analysed the collection of fotography of the school as a possible exercise in the direction of understanding the intentions of inculcating the ideas and discussing the publications of the lectures which were organized by the teachers in the years of 1925 and 1936.

Pacheco, Patricia Carvalho 18 August 2008 (has links)
This study has the objective of analyse and understand the process of (not) teach and (not) learn Mathematics in the first year of elementary school in a rural school from Uberlândia city. We organized the present work in five parts; in the first on we elaborated a discussion about the rural school to understand a little bit about the history of that institution and we could note that since its beginning, in the first decades of the twentieh century, till nowadays that institution has been coming marginalized. In the second part, we presented our conception around the Mathematics learn and teaching process based in a historic-cultural emphasis, including teachers and students like historic subjects and emphasizing the interaction between those ones in the process of learning and teaching. We also discussed the daily school as fundamental space-time of the educative work. Because of that, we considerate the not learning, hardly ever pointed as a failure of the students, as a complex school phenomenon that requires a deep analyses of the daily school and the class room. The process of construction of the methodological route from this present works is presentend in the third part. We chose for a qualitative approach and developed the following steps: observation in class, rooms with field notes, production and analysis of exercises used by the research participants teachers in the class rooms with their students. In the fourth part, we told a little of the story of Jardim das Flores , school in wich we made the field search during the second half of 2005 and first half of 2006. In that part we presented the 3 teachers and the students with who we worked; with the description of those subjects and their relationships we tried to substantiate the discussion about the process of learning and teaching Mathematics. We noted that there are a lot of variations in the relation of learning and teaching and evidenced that one that took our attention by the most in the school: the not teaching and the not learning. We, although, selected other variations as axis of analysis: the teaching and learning, the not teaching and the learning, the teaching and the not learning, and the not teaching and the not learning. We could note that there is a deep relation between the way used by the teacher to teach and the way of learning of the student and, to teach Mathematics is necessary considerate the students as culture subjects and the daily school as a learning space for the teachers. Finally, we also salient the importance of the collaborative work for the continued formation of teachers.

Escovando histÃrias a contrapelo: narrativas de jovens sobre as suas trajetÃrias sociais e profissionais na âcidade das oportunidadesâ / Brushing stories against the grain: youth on narrative their professional careers the "city of opportunities

Maria Isabel Silva Bezerra Linhares 18 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims at evaluating life trajectories of poverty-ridden youngsters in the city of Sobral, State of Ceara, based on their experiences within the job market and according to their reality, while searching to understand how such practical knowledge is summoned to help with their social and professional projects. The research tries to investigate thoroughly how those youths have been designing their professional experiences to tackle daily challenges related to tensions generated by the qualification effort raised not only by the job market but by the city itself. It is, therefore, an attempt to understand how young people relate to work, here identified as âyoung people from the periphery of the job marketâ considering their insertion experiences, promoted or not by the State, regular or not, and marked by short-term and precarious aspects. It is an analytic construct directed towards determining how youngsters perceive the job market at a time when they are experiencing formation processes fomented by public policies aimed at placing poor young people in the job market. The research aimed at young people as the investigationâs subjects, at different loci: training agencies that also act as a go-between, highlighting the Social Development Secretariat (SDS), the Technology and Economic Development Secretariat (STDE), the Productive Inclusion Agency of Sobral, the National Service for Industrial Training (SENAI), projects for insertion of young people in the job market, citing specifically the Projovem Worker, the Projovem Adolescent Worker, The First Step and The Young Apprentice, and in the street spaces of downtown Sobral where informal jobs are found. The path followed by the research was based on determining the institutional version of facts that take place within the ground where youths write their first professional experiences; and evaluating their professional trajectories, circumscribed by the job market, to measure their expectations and projects as delineated by their narratives. It is a qualitative effort of ethnographic inspiration that deals with narratives from youths and government agents whence a methodological path was devised based on direct observation, systematic appointment on field journals, analysis of photographs, and interviews involving the groups. The main lines and chapters of the thesis are developed around the ethical interpretation of facts found in the professional narratives of poor youths and government agents found together in the same social tissue. The resulting analyses considered cross-crossing of theoretical and methodological inputs that came mostly from investigation of Walter Benjamin, Gilberto Velho, Howard Becker, Machado Pais, Larrosa Bondia, Claude Dubar, FranÃois Dubet, Pierre Bourdieu, Ãlrich Beck, Giovanni Alves, MÃrcio Pochmann, among other. The histories told here by young people aim at rescuing the struggle for work, recognition and engagement as circumscribed to non-linear trajectories from young people in the periphery of the city of Sobral, State of Ceara, showing the extent of current and past repression that is intentionally forgotten and hidden by those that face daily struggles and now tell about them.

Metro Environmental: The impact of training HVAC technicians using the SightPros-VirTechs system for remote, wireless, Internet video assistance.

Daily, Ellen Wilmoth Matthews 05 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study explored the overall impact of training HVAC technicians using the SightPros-VirTechs system for remote, wireless, internet video assistance at a small HVAC company, Metro Environmental. John Thomason, the president/co-owner developed a website and a new SightPros communication tool that allows wireless, one-on-one, just-in-time, high-quality, video-monitored instructions between an expert at one site and a technician at another site. Metro Environmental successfully used the SightPros-VirTechs system to train a new apprentice remotely. The apprentice and expert changed their normal and routine physical activities because the expert worked remotely and the apprentice worked on-site. Within just a few months, the apprentice proved competent enough to go to customer accounts without more experienced technicians nearby. The technicians express excitement about the SightPros communication tool as a way to contact remote experts whenever needed. The customer and business contacts also give good reviews and suggest other benefits. The expert permanently captures the communications so the company can use the saved video for many applications, especially training. The dissertation provides a list of recommendations to trainers/educators for similar applications.

IsiZulu traditional healers’ perspective of ukuhlonipha in context

Nene, Jabulani Owen 31 January 2014 (has links)
Traditional healers are one among professionals that are viewed as the most significant people in African Society. They are accorded the highest esteem because of the role they play in saving people’s lives and promoting cultural aspects such as ukuhlonipha amasiko in isiZulu. It should be remembered that this word ukuhlonipha which means to respect, is used across cultures to maintain peace within family and society. It all depends on which culture promotes it more than others. It is sociolinguistic truism that ukuhlonipha is essentially linked to the ubuntu philosophy of African people. However, traditional healers more than other people follow ukuhlonipha culture in numerous ways, especially when they meet, being consulted and during traditional ceremonies. They serve and promote what in IsiZulu is known as ukuhlonipha, which to the uninitiated and sometimes even to the scholars of this philosophy is a mystery. It is for this reason and others that people view them as the soul of society. This study looks at relevant sociolinguistic theories especially the politeness theory to analyze most of the hlonipha features shown by traditional healers, apprentice and people during consultation. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

The intention in this work is to reveal the poetic to Mario Quintana, seeking to understand and explain how the poet manipulates the imagery of incitement and as evidenced by his poetic concepts. To this end, the work The Anthropological Structures of the Imaginary (2001), and the imaginary, of Gilbert Durand (1994), will provide the theoretical basis and the poetics of reverie, of Gaston Bachelard (2009). Therefore, consider the style and the plurality of styles in Quintana, making a foray into the poetic to prove that the author is not attached to any literary style, though, has it left contaminated by the surreal beauty as a means to seek the freedom of creation, escaping the limitations imposed by so-called literary schools, because the author walked against material society. Thus, his poems explore dreams, fantasies, visions and hallucinations. This dissertational work will be guided by a simple language, even in the case of the theories explored here, since another goal that will guide is to make it work in a research material for teachers and high school students. Therefore, the didactic character will be a goal to be achieved at the end. Thus, it is expected to instigate the reader of this work to pursue the work of Mario Quintana and her make object pleasant and constant reading.
