Interpreting the Past : The 3D Impact

Kaiser, Maja January 2020 (has links)
Using 3D methods in the archaeological field makes way for a number of new possibilities. However, how these methods affect the interpretation of the past is a rather unexplored subject and this thesis investigates the matter by viewing 3D usage within both fieldwork and analytic circumstances. It explains how the utilization of 3D works to minimize bias data collection, and also how open access in relation to digital 3D data creates more possibilities for the interpretation of archaeological data.

The past in video games? : Perception of archaeological information amongst Twitter users based on video games.

Armstrong, Lennard January 2022 (has links)
Archaeological communication often seeks avenues to take in order to convey information to a public. One of these is video games, yet many articles do not delve into the effect that games have on people, taking for granted that people will learn something. This text aims to understand a group’s view on the past after it has gone through a transformative state such as a video game adaptation. With the web page Twitter offering a digital place of discussion, posts and comments will be analyzed in relation to the aim. The literary theory death of the author, interpretation and authority will help understand how the important aspect of accuracy is utilized amongst Twitter users. The findings conclude that accuracy is an important aspect of recreation amongst twitter users. It is to be employed in authentic portrayal of the past, meaning that the users seek to see a true representation, in contrast to a story taking liberties. Twitter users seek a definitive past, or a correct past, that should seek to emulate archaeological information in detail.

A comparing study about women’s ideal during the 1930’s out of a genus perspective : A comparing study about how women’s ideal are expressed and seen in the journals Hertha and Husmodern during 1935

Kara, Zilan Leyla January 2022 (has links)
In this research, the women ideals, during the 1930s have been studied based on the content of two women's magazines, Hertha and Husmodern. The purpose of the study was to look in to, how the ideals are expressed in each magazine, how the growing nationalism and the society’s social structure are affected by the design of the ideals, and then concluded in a comparison between the results of the magazines content. The study also had a gender perspective and was based on the theories gendersystem and genderorder. Results showed that ideals of beauty, ideals of housewives, motherhood and knowledge as ideals were indicated in the magazines, in different ways; through advertisements, articles and question columns. There was also a clear difference in which ideals the magazines expressed and also how they were expressed. In summary, the study showed that the prevailing societal changes after the First World War contributed to a process of change among Swedish women and they became increasingly aware of their rights and their independence. The study also showed that beauty- and body ideals became important ideals to follow as a Swedish woman.

De vita fläckarna i soldathistorien : En studie över blivande soldat- och båtsmansänkors liv under 1800-talet / The White Spots in Soldier History : A study of future soldiers’ and boatsmen’s widows in the 19th century

Norin, Annie January 2022 (has links)
This essay deals with the lives of soldiers' widows in Himmeta parish in Västmanland and boatsmen's widows in Förkärla parish in Blekinge in the 19th century with the aim of highlighting these women. I chose these women from a parish register from 1871-1880. To get a basis for this study, I have chosen to follow the widows of soldiers and boatsmen from when they were born until they became soldier widows. The results have been analyzed based on their family background, the widows' marriages and how their children fared. The answer I got was that the widows came from the lower classes, it was not common for them to remarry and that their children did not choose the same professions as their fathers. Ericson Wolke has served as an important reference to my work. The majority of soldiers’ and boatsmen’s widows lived a difficult life. The essay deals with twenty soldiers’ and boatsmen's widows. I have compared their lives as maids with their subsequent lives as married women and then as widows, but also how their children’s lives turned out. The essay shows that there is a certain difference between being the widow of a soldier over a in the agrarian society during the 19th century. Although life was hard for soldiers’ widows, life was even harder for boatsmen’s widows.

Vatten och deponeringar : Vatten som aktörskap vid val av deponering / Water and depositions : Waters agency in choosing places of depositions

Sandberg, Nathalie January 2023 (has links)
Bronze age depositions was a phenomenon that occured both on land and in different forms ofwatery places such as lakes, bogs, rivers and waterfalls. A lot of research has been done inthis area, around what kinds of finds and objects have been found in these contexts and manyquestions arise while working with depositions as a phenomena. As to why they have beenput there, what were the reasons behind the depositioning and did the surrounding area matterto the people putting their own and other people down in these watery places. The questionsfor this study will be if the waters had its own agential power that played a part, whether theplace, such as flowing or stationary water had an impact or if there were other factors orpowers behind the choosing of place to deposition. This paper aims to discuss water with itsown form of agency and how this relates to why depositions took place in the first place inMälardalen.

Tuning the grave : Early auloi as grave goods / Att stämma graven : Tidiga auloi som gravgåvor

Appelgren, Karl January 2023 (has links)
The aulos was the most important wind instrument in the ancient Greek world. In this thesis, the eight pre-Hellenistic graves in which auloi have been found are investigated with the aim of understanding auloi as grave goods. To achieve this aim, the eight burial assemblages are analysed and compared to each other, but also to the burial assemblages of other graves with musical instruments. In the ensuing discussion, the move from empirical analysis to explanatory reasoning is made, and it is concluded that the auloi found in graves reflect the musical activities of the deceased. Given the composition of the burial assemblages, it is suggested that these activities should be considered as a part of the well-educated background of the deceased, rather than as an indication of professional musicianship.

Scandinavian Mummies : Interpreting the preservative qualities of Danish Bronze Age Mounds / Skandinaviska Mumier : Tolkning av danska bronsåldershögars bevaringskvaliteter

Grönkvist, Ellinor January 2023 (has links)
This paper explores/investigates the circumstances around the unusual level of preservation of organic materials within certain mounds in Jutland, Denmark, as well as the scientific benefits of these findings. These mounds contain coffins made from oak-logs and within them mummies of different degree of preservation have been found. Five mounds have been selected to represent the find category: Borum Eshøj, Trindhøj, Storhøj in Egtved, Skrydstrupand Muldbjerg. These five have all become staples in their own right within Scandinavian Bronze Age Archaeology. Within this paper different interpretations of how these oak-log coffins and their contents have remained in their current state of preservation while other similar graves have not will be explored. In addition, different areas of research that have benefited from these findings will be highlighted.

Gropar och vallar i klapper : En undersökning av lämningar i Västerbottens klapperfält / Pits and mounds in pebble : A study of archaeological remains in ancient pebble beaches in the county of Västerbotten.

Hedström, Johan January 2023 (has links)
Pits and mounds in pebble: A study of archaeological remains in ancient pebble beaches inthe county of Västerbotten. Pits (Sw. boplatsgropar) and mounds (Sw. boplatsvallar) in ancient pebble beaches are two types of archaeological remains that are common under the highest coastline in the county of Västerbotten, Sweden. Although common, knowledge of these archaeological remains is limited. Organic materials left in pebble formations rapidly break down and degrade due to high exposure to moisture and weather, making dating by traditional archaeological methods such as 14C or dendrochronology impossible. The data for this study consists of two parts. One part has been collected through field surveys by the author and the other part is collected from National Heritage Board´s database of archaeological sites (Sw. Riksantikvarieämbetets kulturmiljöregister). The result of this study suggests that the majority of smaller pits and mounds in ancient pebble beaches have been used for storage and that larger pits and mounds are big enough to have functioned as foundations for simple dwellings. It also suggests there is some spatial coherence between the type of archaeological remains known as hut foundations (Sw.tomtningar) and pits in ancient pebble beaches. Albeit this coherence is slight and may be a coincidence. Furthermore, the study suggests there is a spatial coherence between quartz and quartzite handled by humans and pits in ancient pebble beaches that is not a coincidence. Suggestively, some pits in ancient pebble beaches that can be found today have been made and used in prehistoric times, by people who used quartz and quartzite in their daily lives.
