The first one is the operation of the mind, and the second is the subjective life that emerges from this operation. In social evaluation, the implicit and explicit attitudes express this distinction, where the nature of the given answers can be controlled or unconscious depending on the intention or the purpose from whom directs them. Previous studies show a discrepancy between what is clearly expressed by questionnaires and what is unconsciously verified by computerized test concerning issues related to beliefs, ethnicity, gender, among others (Greenwald et al. 1998 and 2002, Jost et al., 2004 and Nosek & Smyth, 2007).The present study aims to investigate the teacher s unconscious attitudes, who is a basic element in the construction of the knowledge, facing deficient students in regular classroom, through an implicit association test (IAT) on deficiency. For this, an adaptation in IAT developed for Nosek was carried out. Through this test, the author demonstrates the existence of divergences between what is told and what is implicit (consciousness versus unconsciousness). The test is based on ordinance of stimulations, representing four concepts presented in a congruent or an incongruent way. Forty teachers who have in their classroom deficient children had answered to one IAT. This test contained four categories (good, bad, with deficiency and without deficiency) and the participants task is to judge which is the category corresponding to a presented photo or word in the center of the screen; it is made of the following judgment blocks: 1-GOOD-BAD; 2-WITH DEFICIÊNCIA-SEM DEFICIENCY; 3- GOOD parameter and WITHOUT DEFICIENCY versus BAD AND WITH DEFICIENCY; 4- GOOD parameter and WITH DEFICIENCY versus BAD AND WITHOUT DEFICIENCY. MANOVA disclosed significant effect for total of right answers and time of reaction (p<0,0001 e 0,00001, respectively). Analysis post hoc with Fischer LSD test, disclosed significant effect for the judgment of the photos with deficiency in the GOOD and WITH DEFICIENCY block versus BAD AND WITHOUT DEFICIENCY block. In spite of an explicit positioning of non-prejudice regarding deficiencies, the teacher s performance was damaged when the task introduced an element of conflict - GOOD and WITH DEFICIENCY. Such discovery reveals that, even on an unconscious way, the look of the educators differs in a prejudiced way people with deficiency.

A novel measure to assess self-discrimination in binge eating disorder and obesity

Rudolph, Almut, Hilbert, Anja 24 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Stigmatized obese individuals tend to internalize the pervasive weight stigma which might lead to self-discrimination and increased psychopathology. While explicit and implicit weight stigma can be measured using self-report questionnaires and Implicit Association Tests (IAT), respectively, the assessment of self-discrimination relied solely on self-report. The present study sought to develop an IAT measuring implicit self-discrimination (SD-IAT) in samples of obese individuals with and without binge-eating disorder (BED). Seventy-eight individuals were recruited from the community and individually matched in three groups. Obese participants with BED, obese participants without BED (OB), and a normal weight control group without eating disorder psychopathology (HC) were assessed with the SD-IAT and other measures relevant for convergent and discriminant validation. Results revealed significantly higher implicit self-discrimination in the BED group when compared to both OB and HC. Furthermore, significant correlations were found between the SD-IAT with body mass index, experiences of weight stigma, depressive symptoms, and implicit self-esteem. Finally, implicit self-discrimination predicted eating disorder psychopathology over and above group membership, and experiences of weight stigma. This study provides first evidence of the validity of the SD-IAT. Assessing implicit self-discrimination might further increase understanding of weight stigma and its significance for psychosocial functioning among vulnerable obese individuals.

Implicit Measures and Online Risks

Wang, Lucinda W. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Information systems researchers typically use self-report measures, such as questionnaires to study consumers’ online risk perception. The self-report approach captures the conscious perception of online risk but not the unconscious perception that precedes and dominates human being’s decision-making. A theoretical model in which implicit risk perception precedes explicit risk evaluation is proposed. The research model proposes that implicit risk affects both explicit risk and the attitude towards online purchase. In a direct path, the implicit risk affects attitude towards purchase. In an indirect path, the implicit risk affects explicit risk, which in turn affects attitude towards purchase. The stimulus used was a questionable web site offering pre-paid credit card services. Data was collected from 150 undergraduate students enrolled in a university. Implicit risk was measured using methods developed in social psychology, namely, single category-implicit association test. Explicit risk and attitude towards purchase were measured using a well-known instrument in the e-commerce risk literature. Preliminary, unconditioned analysis suggested that (a) implicit risk does not affect explicit risk, (b) explicit risk does not affect attitude to purchase, and (c) implicit risk does not affect attitude towards purchase.

Audiovisual integration for perception of speech produced by nonnative speakers

Yi, Han-Gyol 12 September 2014 (has links)
Speech often occurs in challenging listening environments, such as masking noise. Visual cues have been found to enhance speech intelligibility in noise. Although the facilitatory role of audiovisual integration for perception of speech has been established in native speech, it is relatively unclear whether it also holds true for speech produced by nonnative speakers. Native listeners were presented with English sentences produced by native English and native Korean speakers. The sentences were in either audio-only or audiovisual conditions. Korean speakers were rated as more accented in audiovisual than in the audio-only condition. Visual cues enhanced speech intelligibility in noise for native English speech but less so for nonnative speech. Reduced intelligibility of audiovisual nonnative speech was associated with implicit Asian-Foreign association, suggesting that listener-related factors partially influence the efficiency of audiovisual integration for perception of speech produced by nonnative speakers. / text

Neurociências aplicadas ao ensino-aprendizagem da tecnologia nuclear / Neuroscience applied to the teaching-learning of nuclear technology

Barabás, Roberta de Carvalho 16 October 2018 (has links)
Although the applications of nuclear technology benefit several fields, such as health, industry, agriculture, energy production, among others, its public acceptance is still reduced and there are various barriers to its use. A lack of assertive knowledge about this technology generates prejudice against its use. Prejudices may be explicit at the conscious level or implicit operating outside awareness. Nevertheless, either conscious or unconscious, prejudices interfere with behavior and attitudes. The experiences in the explicit and implicit memories can be transferred from one to the other; thus unconscious prejudices or associations may be modified by the explicit memory, that is, new knowledge may reduce or even reverse them. The teachers play a critical role for transforming education; however, for sharing balanced knowledge they must have a perspective without prejudices. This work aims to develop a neuroscience-based methodology through which implicit associations of Brazilian science teachers towards nuclear technology may be assessed and possible implicit prejudices may be changed by new knowledge. In order to identify implicit prejudices, specific implicit memory tests are required. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) was chosen for this work. By following the steps provided by the software FreeIAT, the IAT was customized aiming to compare the implicit associations of respondents towards nuclear and oil. A pretest with nuclear specialists (control group) and lay people was administered to check the consistency of the customized IAT. The Cronbach\'s alpha was applied to measure the reliability of the test and showed good internal consistency. A 5-hour multisensory program for science teachers was designed and administered at the Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN). The IAT was administered at the beginning and at the end of the program and the results of the implicit associations were compared. After a six-month period, the IAT was re-administered to the same group of teachers to verify whether the implicit associations remained stable. This multisensory program was compared to a 12-week traditional teaching program with lecture classes held at IPEN for incoming post-graduation students. The multisensory program was effective for changing and maintaining the implicit associations of teachers towards the beneficial applications of nuclear technology, unlike the traditional teaching program with lecture classes. This work demonstrated that it is possible to break paradigms and prejudices. The multisensory program enabled an enriched knowledge about the applications of nuclear technology, that is, it promoted new experiences in the explicit memory, which modified the previous associations stored in the implicit memory. Therefore, the multisensory program has proven to be a successful, cost-effective tool, which is able to cause and maintain changes in implicit associations and can be applied in several areas where changes in implicit associations and prejudice reversal are desired. The results demonstrated that the proposed doctoral research was effective, thus contributing to the diffusion of knowledge of the beneficial applications of nuclear technology and, consequently, to its demythification. This methodology may be administered to other fields to identify, modify and/or reduce implicit prejudices or stereotypes.

Un estudio transcultural del prejuicio contra habitantes de calle con creacíon de medidas explícitas e implícitas / Cross-cultural study of prejudice against homeless with explicit and implicit measures

Silva, Carlos José Nieto January 2016 (has links)
The objectives of this research were to create explicit and implicit measures of prejudice against homeless, and to identify factors associated with negative attitudes toward this population. To meet these objectives several studies collected in four articles were made. In the first article the literature on prejudice against homeless was reviewed. In this study was found that both, in Latin America and in the countries of industrialized West, have been reported stereotypes towards this population related to mental illness and drug addiction, as well as acts of discrimination related to limitations in the use of public space. Article two corresponded to a study of cross-cultural creation and validation of a scale of prejudice against homeless, created with basics of Item Response Theory and the Allport's scale of prejudice. The created scale presented evidence of construct validity, convergent validity and good internal consistency. It was also verified, in part, the Allport's theory of the scale of prejudice. The third article aimed at identifying factors associated with prejudice against homeless, and to build and test a hierarchical model to explain variations in the levels of this prejudice. The proposed model had four levels of prejudice mediations, good fit indices, and included the variables social dominance orientation, basic values, egocentrism, perception of insecurity and quality of contact with homeless people. In the fourth article was described the process of creating an implicit association test about attitudes toward homeless, and was tested scores correlation levels acquired with this test and those acquired with the scale established in article two. The results indicated that there are strong associations between concepts representing the homeless people and negative stereotypes towards this population. No correlation between the scores on the two measures was found, in line with other studies on implicit and explicit measures of stereotypes.

Sacco, Airi Macias January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation, composed by one theoretical and three empirical papers, aimed to investigate the development of race attitudes in children. The first study was a systematic review of Brazilian psychological studies on racial prejudice. The second one involved the development and validation of a set of children’s portraits to be used as stimuli on scientific research, the BIC-Multicor. The third one used implicit (Evaluative Priming and the Implicit Association Test) and explicit measures of attitude to investigate the development of race attitudes in White, Pardo and Black children (N = 542), aged six to 14, from Porto Alegre and Salvador. Implicit attitudes were different between cities and also between racial groups. The forth study assessed differences in racial categorization in Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul and the United States. Racial categorization was influenced by context and similar results were found between participants from Bahia and the US.
