All\" : cartographies of artistic experiences of the dance and body expression workshop as bridge-place

Bichara, Tatiana Alves Cordaro 29 May 2014 (has links)
The objective of this work is to understand what the Dance and Body Expression Workshop produces in its surroundings, in the territories where it passes and in the people who experience it in the city space. As specific objective, systematize the methodology developed in the meetings of the Dance and Body Expression Workshop as a possibility of action that prioritizes the art of dance with artistic purpose, in an open and heterogeneous group, in a public way, free of charge. As method, chose the use of narratives (Benjamin, 1994) of experiences of the researcher as coordinator and dancer of the workshop and the transcription of statements/testimonies offered by the participants of the group. Deleuze and Guattari (2010) present themselves as important interlocutors to substantiate the cartographic reading of this story and the record that supported the questioning and reflective stance on what is created in the ongoing process of the Dance and Body Expression Workshop, which was treated in this study as a bridge place for the person/group to transit through the institutional centers and to open passages, in a subjective and territorial change, to go beyond them. The contribution of the philosophy of Espinosa (2009) shows to be relevant to the analytic dimension of this work, which allowed the identification of five reflective axes concerning what the Workshop can produce. They are: uniqueness, intensity, expansion, dance for all and work for the subjectification, which could be understood as pathways to the production of health in the field of the anti-asylum practices

Gender and mental health: the experience of female and male identities and the psychological suffering in the contemporary Brazilian society. Some reflections based on testimonies of patients with severe mental illness of the CAPS - Araraquara - SP

Santos, Anna Maria Corbi Caldas dos 24 September 2008 (has links)
This research analyses the experience of the psychological suffering based on the testimonies of men and women users of a public health service of the municipality of Araraquara SP. It is considered the social construction of the psychological suffering and, therefore, the arrangement of values and norms of a certain society and historical epoch. In other terms, what seems to be something extremely individual, that is to say, the experience of a whole of illnesses in the subjective scope, expresses regularities that are conformed by a certain social configuration. It was used semistructured interviews with users of the Center of Psychosocial Attention (CAPES) men and women, analyzed through the perspective of the social gender relations and under the context of the changes of the Brazilian psychiatric system starting from the Anti Asylum Fight. The conclusion is that the challenge to be faced by the contemporary brazilian society in the construction of public policies in the field of mental health must take into account the questions raised by the perspective of the social gender relations

From subjectivity to agency : Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt on "refugees", "problems" and "solutions"

Saunders, Natasha E. G. January 2016 (has links)
This thesis makes a historically grounded theoretical contribution to an emerging “critical” approach to refugee studies. Utilising the insights of Michel Foucault and Hannah Arendt, it seeks to reconceptualise academic and policy understandings of what has come to be known as “the refugee problem" through an examination and critique of its (implicit) conceptual foundations. The thesis proceeds through a series of historically-informed moves oriented by the relationship between power, subjectivity, and agency, and argues that the key to reconceptualising the refugee problem lies in understanding how these three concepts rely upon and reinforce one another in a particular historically contingent configuration. The objectives of this thesis are threefold and connected. First, it unpacks a deceptively unproblematic term, “the refugee problem” to reveal the complicity of understanding the “refugee (as) problem” in perpetuating the plight of increasing numbers of the world's population, despite the alleviation of the difficulties these people face being the professed goal of the refugee regime. Second, in so doing it contributes to a growing body of literature seeking to counter the voicelessness and abjection into which refugees and asylum seekers are cast. And third, on the basis of this, to begin a conversation about rethinking the nature of the “solutions” we seek to a reframed “refugee problem.” Engaging in a (Foucaultian) genealogical analysis of “the refugee problem”, the first half of the thesis charts the historically-contingent development of a distinct “refugee problem discourse”, revealing that the construction of refugees as passive victims of political forces is the effect both of such discourse and of the international refugee regime as a classificatory regime of truth and subjectivity, rather than an expression of any essential nature of “the refugee.” The thesis then turns to Hannah Arendt's work as a theoretical lens through which to reframe our understanding of the “refugee problem” and to investigate how to identify and open up creative forces for re-subjectification processes and “solutions” not tied to the classificatory and subjectivising logic of the refugee regime or sovereign state system.  Practices of rights claiming, and the City of Sanctuary movement in the UK are examined as two such processes, with the potential of posing “counter-narratives” of problems and solutions which challenge the technocratic, or population-management, approach of the refugee regime.

De l'arriéré au malade héréditaire : histoire de la prise en charge et des représentations du handicap mental en France et Allemagne (1890-1934) / From feeble-mindedness to hereditary disease : history of care and representations of mentally challenged people in France and Germany (1890-1934)

Hoffbeck, Valentine 06 December 2016 (has links)
The topic of this PhD dissertation is the history of mentally deficient children and adults in both France and Germany between 1890 and 1934. This work focuses on people who suffered from mental retardation although at that time they would have been referred to as "feeble-minded," "idiots" or "imbeciles." This study provides a new focus on different subjects. The various circulations of medical models are considered in a dynamic perspective. lt also provides an original vision of the construction of the category of feeblemidness, influenced by agents like doctors [psychiatrists], families or teachers, questioning what was done in practical terms. Mentally deficient people were shaped by the gaze of the people they interacted with. They are also examined in a social and economic context to which these individuals respond. The evolution of the characterization of feeble-mindedness and the use of intelligence tests highlight various attempts to classify those individuals in a more rational way. From a more specific psychiatrie point of view, this thesis shows how the emphasis on their classification as "unproductive persans" as well as the description of feeble-mindedness as a hereditary and "racial" disease transformed them into a social issue in the context of the rise of social Darwinism and eugenics, which led fo their sterilization in Germany from 1934 on.

The Psychiatric Reform was materialized with the financing and regulation of alternative services that substitute the psychiatric hospital. This change was promoted by the anti asylum debate and the deinstitutionalization besides psychosocial rehabilitation paradigms. Mental health care, therefore, acquired a new form and the Centers for Psychosocial Care (CAPS) are considered the main services of the health network presently under construction. They are services that offer a variety of therapeutics and amongst them is the workshop, considered essential for the advancement of the Reform ideas. The study was conducted in a CAPS II in Natal, RN. Systematic visits were made using the Institutional Analysis perspective, futhermore were made interviews with professionals who was related to workshops. In the end, data were then discussed according to Schizoanalysis. Results denot that workshops represents, in the same time, progress and regress of Psychiatric Reform. It was observed that workshops were oftentimes reduced to strategies for the occupation of time, and as a means for the transmission of social values considered correct. The relationship between professionals and the user of the service was hierarchical and both players was seeing the workshop as a task to be met. Although users expressed intreresting about wokshops, was reported that the work was boring. Besides, except for some cases, the therapeutic workshops wasn t helping clients to create other possibilites in theirs life and stops the job inside the mental care service / Este trabalho objetivou investigar as oficinas terap?uticas num servi?o substitutivo ao hospital psiqui?trico, observando se seu funcionamento condiz ou n?o com preceitos da Reforma Psiqui?trica.

Comparative study of public mental health systems in Argentina and Brasil

Isabel Victoria Marazina 24 February 2012 (has links)
A comparative, descriptive and analytical study of mental health systems in Brazil and Argentina, considering some of the developments and structures of implementation of the anti-asylum trend in the countries analysed and studying these factors in conjunction with regulations issued by international organisations in favour of this change in trend, from 1975 until the present-time. In this regard, the principal reference used in this study is the Caracas Declaration of 14 November 1990, created at the Regional Conference for the Restructuring of Psychiatric Care in Latin America, and signed by both countries, each therein committing to the restructuring of their respective mental health systems in accordance with the recommendations stipulated in the document. The analysis has three strands: a study of the published legislation, a study of existing practice in the Field, and a case study of two pioneering experiments of implementation of anti-asylum logic carried out simultaneously in each of the two countries. The study uses as theoretical reference the hypotheses of the Institutionalization Movement and the work of Michel Foucault, as well as the extensive ideology supporting the development of the anti-asylum trend: Basaglia, Tosquelles, Oury, Castel, and others

HBTQ i asylprocessen : En kvalitativ dokumentstudie om trovärdighet och tillförlitlighet i HBTQ-asylsökandes domstolsbeslut / LGBTQ in the asylum process : A qualitative document study about credibility and reliability in court orders for LGBTQ asylum seekers

Liljeberg, Frida, Rasmussen, Carola January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to, through an analyze of court orders, gain a more profound understanding of how the Swedish Migration Courts argue and relate to credibility and reliability in the decision assessment for asylum-seeking LGBTQ people. The court orders used in the study was all rejected by the Swedish Migration Court and appealed to the Swedish Migration Supreme Court. The study is of an hermeneutic and qualitative perspective and an argumentation analysis of the court orders was conducted. The results show that the Swedish Migration Courts use both international-and Swedish law and guidelines as support and basis when they argue in the asylum assessments. They also use value-added words to reinforce their arguments. The critical perception of the asylum process presented by previous research can be understood to some extent. It is also possible to see that some criticism is unfounded, as more perspectives should be taken into consideration. Some gaps in knowledge about LGBTQ issues can be seen and therefore better guidelines may be necessary.

Hyde Park Asylum for infirm and destitute women, 1862-1886 : an historical study of government welfare for women in need of residential care in New South Wales

Hughes, Joy Noreen, University of Western Sydney, College of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, School of Humanities January 2004 (has links)
Hyde Park Asylum for Infirm and Destitute Women, Sydney was the New South Wales government’s first direct initiative in social welfare for the aged with the provision of residential care for women. It was the genesis of a system of destitute asylums (later state hospitals) that lasted for more than a century. For its duration (1862-1886), Hyde Park Asylum was the only one of its type in the colony. This empirical study looks at the day-to-day lives of its inmates at Hyde Park Asylum and follows them to their new home at Newington Asylum on the Parramatta River in 1886. The external and internal administration of the asylum under the Government Asylum’s Boards and later as a sub-department of the Colonial Secretary ‘s office is examined, including the roles of the manager and the matron. / Master of Arts (Hons)

Framed by Legal Rationalism: Refugees and the Howard Government's Selective Use of Legal Rationality; 1999-2003

Rogalla, Barbara, BarbRog@iprimus,com.au January 2007 (has links)
This thesis investigated the power of framing practices in the context of Australian refugee policies between 1999 and 2003. The analysis identified legal rationalism as an ideological projection by which the Howard government justified its refugee policies to the electorate. That is, legal rationalism manifested itself as an overriding concern with the rules and procedures of the law, without necessarily having concern for consistency or continuity. In its first form, legal rationalism emerged as a
