Americana Suite: A Composition for Full Orchestra, Big Band, and Jazz Chamber Ensembles Inspired by American Master Paintings

Routenberg, Scott Kevin 20 April 2008 (has links)
Americana Suite is a seven movement musical composition inspired by nineteenth and early twentieth century American master paintings. Representative artists from each of the major schools of American painting include Frederic Church, Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, George Bellows, Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keeffe. Essentially pluralist in style, the suite is written for ensembles of varying size and genre, spanning from full orchestra and contemporary big band to intimate jazz chamber ensembles and electro-acoustic hybrids. Four of the seven movements are written for jazz ensembles and incorporate improvisation, while the other three orchestral movements explore romantic, impressionist and cinematic idioms. Historical summaries of each school, artist and painting are followed by detailed aesthetic and theoretical analyses of the respective movements. Harmonica virtuoso Howard Levy performs as a special guest artist.

A descriptive analysis of first term attrition from U.S. Naval ships

Carlson, Carl Glynn 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis was conducted to analyze certain factors affecting first-term attrition from U.S. Naval ships. The Survival Tracking File (STF) was used as the primary data source, and from it files were constructed that permitted three areas of study. First, the overall cohort of a year's worth of enlistees was examined. The survival curve for the cohort was generated and individual monthly cohorts were examined for attrition patterns. Secondly, overall attrition percentages were calculated for individual ships and for classes of ships and these attrition percentages were then examined for differences using statistical techniques. An ANOVA model using transformed data proved accurate in explaining attrition variance. Lastly, a comparison between attrition per month and underway hours per month was made for classes of ships and for individual ships of three specific classes. A rough relationship was observed, between peaks of high underway hours and peaks of attrition. In looking at individual aircraft carriers, the attrition percentage seemed to be inversely proportional to underway hours per month. Several of these findings warrant further investigation so that the Navy may more fully understand its attrition problem and thereby take steps to alleviate it. / http://archive.org/details/descriptiveanaly00carl / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Ontogenèse de la recherche alimentaire durant la phase juvénile : cas des prédateurs plongeurs / Ontogeny of foraging behaviour during the early life of deep diving predators

Orgeret, Florian 14 June 2018 (has links)
The juvenile phase of long lived-species is poorly understood despite its critical importance for the future of animal populations. Thanks to new bio-technologies, in this thesis we managed to monitor the ontogeny of foraging behaviour in 52 juveniles from 3 deep-diving marine predator species (king penguins, emperor penguins and southern elephant seals) in the French Southern territories over the first year after their independence. The juveniles of these 3 species showed a very large dispersion range over huge distances in the Southern Ocean. Their dispersion was characterized at departure by partially innate behaviour in their orientation preferences. Juveniles showed a strong dependency to the local oceanic currents orientation and frontal zones. More, they showed a spatial segregation with adults. Juveniles were quickly able to dive very deep. Their diving and foraging skills increased progressively with time. However, juveniles never completely reached the efficiency of adults, even after one year at sea. Some juveniles did not manage to increase their foraging skills while their environment became less productive; these juveniles may have died at sea, probably because of starvation. The first year at sea appears thus to be critical for the 3 studied species, as substantial mortality occurred in each case. This thesis presents new information about the ontogeny of dispersion and the foraging behaviour in marine deep-diving predators.

Grönblad, Oliver, Filip, Hultgren January 2019 (has links)
When students of the Nautical Science and the Marine Engineering Programmes are on the ship-based internship, this means limited opportunities for physical activity. Factors such as long hours of work, bad weather and a lack of sleep can affect the students while at sea. Recommendations from the Public Health Authority mean that adult persons from the age of 18 need to exercise a physical activity at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity so as not to become too sedentary. According to the Maritime Labor Convention, there will be a leisure space aboard ships over 3000 GT, which means that there are opportunities for physical activity on board these vessels. The purpose of this survey was to describe the physical activity of students when they are on a ship-based internship and when they have campus-based education. The purpose is also to compare the students of the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme when it comes to physical activity. The study also aimed to show whether the physically active students used some form of exercise-related dietary supplements. The method consisted of a quantitative study in the form of questionnaires with fixed response alternatives and questions with a graded approach. The sample consisted of 90 respondents from the Nautical Science Programme to the students of the Marine Engineering Programme at a Naval institute. Primary data was compiled in frequency tables to be able to read how the distribution in the variable looked. In order to clarify the distribution of the variable more clearly, the primary data was finally compiled in bar charts. The result showed that the respondents were more physically active when they were on the ship-based practice than when they were on campus. The increase in the physical activity of the Marine Engineering 'respondents appeared clearer while the Nautical Science respondents increase was marginal. Respondents performed more training sessions a week but shortened the length of the workout. The majority of respondents at the naval institute were physically active despite factors such as weather, long hours of work and insufficient sleep affecting them. The study also showed that about half of the respondents who performed physical activity used exercise-related dietary supplements in connection with the exercise. The most common dietary supplement in connection with training that the respondents used was protein powder. The respondents' reason for using dietary supplements was because they got more out of their training.

Where fate calls : the HMAS Voyager tragedy

Frame, Thomas Robert, History, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 1991 (has links)
On 10 February 1964 during naval night exercises off the south coast of Australia, the destroyer HMAS Voyager was lost after colliding with the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne. 82 men were killed. Following the collision, there were two Royal Commissions that sustained a political controversy that lasted for over four years. This thesis examines the loss of Voyager as a watershed in the operational and administrative history of the RAN and as a major event in Australian national history. This study has four broad objectives: to describe the loss of Voyager and the long running controversy that accompanied the disaster; to offer a convincing explanation of the causes of the collision and why two royal commissions concluded that the causes for the disaster were inexplicable; to assess the effect on the RAN, in terms of specific reforms and its influence on Service culture and professional ethos, of the disaster and the inquiries that followed; and finally, to analyse the loss of Voyager as a media and political cause celebre in Australian history. As so little has been written about Voyager using primary sources, this thesis was committed to detailed description of events as well as analysis of themes. This thesis draws upon an extensive body of primary source material in the form of official naval and Royal Commission records to which complete access was given; several large collections of private papers; over one hundred interviews with principal participants; and comprehensive files of press cuttings. The discussion seeks to demonstrate that a series of naval accidents preceding the loss of Voyager contributed in a substantial way to shaping the public reaction to, and political handling of, the disaster; that the method of inquiry played a major role in generating public and political disquiet; that the collision was both a catalyst and stimulus to change in naval operations and reform in naval administration; that the inability of two Royal Commissions to ascertain the causes of the collision and then to public suspicion of a cover-up; and, that the collision was most probably caused by the incorrect relaying of a tactical signal on the bridge of Voyager. The loss of HMAS Voyager appears to be a key event in the development of the RAN, not as a direct result of the collision or its causes, but as a consequence of its long and controversial aftermath.

Walter, Tomas January 2011 (has links)
This thesis was a research on the onboard experience of female officers, today active in the Swedish merchant fleet, and of their thoughts regarding their future at sea. The purpose was to clarify whether the deck officer profession as of today is suited for women and if something could be done to make it more attractive to them; this in view of the small relative number of women in the profession.   I chose the qualitative research design, analyzing data from five semi-structured interviews. This method was used since my primary objective was to understand possible gender issues onboard.   The result showed that there is nothing in a deck officer’s work that can not be performed by a woman. Furthermore, the result pointed to the conclusion that female deck officers are subject to gender related discrimination and sexual harassment, but scarcely. The greatest obstacle for a future at sea proved to be family related, which also made more specific suggestions on how to make the deck officer profession more attractive to women difficult.

An archaeological study of the Solglimt shipwreck survivor camp on sub-Antarctic Marion Island

Van Niekerk, Tara Rae 10 1900 (has links)
In a tale of survival, dubbed that of the “South Seas Crusoes”, a group of men overcame the odds by setting up camp on a deserted volcanic sub-Antarctic island in the middle of the Southern Indian Ocean. This group of men formed the crew of the Norwegian SS Solglimt sealing vessel which had wrecked on the sub-Antarctic Marion Island in October 1908. More than a century later remains of the shipwreck of the SS Solglimt can still be found lying exposed below the water in the bay of Ships Cove. In the valley north of the bay, the remnants of the shipwreck survivor camp associated with the wreck holds hidden stories of a terrestrial maritime landscape formed out of tragedy and the need to survive. It is mainly the remains of this camp which forms the basis of the research and discussion for this dissertation. The following study is not only an attempt to add to our knowledge and understanding of the archaeological remains on Marion Island, it is also to add to an existing body of knowledge involving shipwreck survivor camps. The remains on Marion Island have produced the perfect opportunity to fill gaps within the discipline of Maritime Archaeology, especially in South Africa where too often emphasis is placed on shipwreck studies and not enough on the events taking place before or after the crisis event. The following dissertation uses archaeological techniques alongside historical documents as a way to better understand the socio-cultural behaviour of survivors during events of disaster, isolation and the necessity to survive. The study will be used as a comparison to similar studies around the world and hopes to add to an existing body of knowledge involving survivor camps and disaster-response studies from an archaeological and anthropological perspective. / Anthropology and Archaeology / M.A. (Archaeology)
