Self-Enhancement Processes in Couples

Reyna, Samuel H. 08 1900 (has links)
Self-enhancement is a process by which individuals misperceive themselves by viewing themselves in a positively biased manner. Past research indicates that self-enhancement can have both positive and negative effects on romantic relationships. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore the role of self-enhancement in unmarried dating couples (N = 124 couples; 248 individuals) with respect to conflict, dyadic adjustment, causal and responsibility attributions, and possible moderators between self-enhancement and dyadic adjustment. The results are organized in four sections. First, I found a curvilinear relationship between participant self-enhancement and conflict. At very low and very high levels of self-enhancement there were increased levels of conflict. Second, participant self-enhancement was positively associated with positively associated with increased participant dyadic adjustment, but there was no relationship between participant self-enhancement and partner dyadic adjustment. Third, there was no relationship between participant self-enhancement and causal and responsibility attributions. Fourth, forgiveness and commitment did not moderate the relationship between self-enhancement and dyadic adjustment; however, there were main effects for both forgiveness and commitment - both forgiveness and commitment were positively associated with dyadic adjustment. I conclude by discussing limitations, areas of future research, and implications for counseling.

Health Locus of Control and Available Coping Resources: Do Elderly "Internals" Have an Advantage?

Houtz, Andrew W. (Andrew William) 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between health attribution and the availability of organized internal resources and response style as measured by the Four Square of the Rorschach Inkblot Test. Forty-two subjects participated in this study. Six major hypotheses were explored in the study. None of the hypotheses was statistically significant. Several factors may have contributed to these results. The small sample size and the homogeneity of the sample limited the investigator's ability to interpret the results of the study. Statistically, health attribution may not be conceptually related to organized internal resources and response style since physical and emotional distress may require different coping mechanisms.

Academic motivation and performance as a function of cognitive factors

Moore, Caryl 12 1900 (has links)
Existing scales were modified and factor-analysed through "prepilof' and pilot studies for exploring relations between academic motivation, achievement, and cognitive factors such as locus of control (LOC), attributions, perceived self-determination and ability. Distinct, conceptually meaningful factors emerged. Thirty-seven hypotheses were tested on Unisa students. Among notable findings were: • Internal LOC related to academic motivation, but treating LOC as a set of distinct factors rather than a bipolar dimension offered more insights (e.g. "Impotence" rather than other external LOC factors related negatively to · achievement). • Little was gained from categorising attributions according to Weiner's dimensions. • Intrinsic motivation and "identified regulation" related positively to motivation. • Students' (especially unsuccessful students') expectations of success and perceptions of their ability were over-estimated. • Different factors related to motivation and achievement in different cultural groups. • Although motivation and achievement are usually positively related, this did not apply to disadvantaged groups. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Estados mentais e atitudes proposicionais: abordagens filosóficas da psicologia do senso comum / Mental states and propositional attitudes: philosophical approaches to folk psychology

Oliveira, Guilherme Sanches de 23 May 2014 (has links)
The philosophical literature on Folk Psychology began in the 1970s, and encompasses various questions about our everyday interpersonal understanding, our ability to interact and coordinate activities, the intuitive conceptual framework that relates mental states and propositional attitudes to behaviors, and the cognitive mechanisms of mindreading that allow us to attribute mental states to other people. In this thesis I examine the historical development of this literature, identifying two distinct debates, the first (mainly between Paul Churchland and Jerry Fodor from the 70s to the 90s) focusing on the relationship between the theory of Folk Psychology and scientific theories (in neuroscience and cognitive science), and the second (the contemporary debate) focusing on the cognitive mechanisms of mindreading and the role played by attributions of mental states and propositional attitudes in theories of embodied, situated and extended cognition. In addition to the historical examination of what I argue are two distinct debates as well as of the conceptual transition between them, here I present my criticism of Matthew Ratcliffe\'s contemporary eliminativist approach and, as an alternative to it, I articulate the principles of a pluralistic approach that combines both mindreading and situated contextual interpretation as fundamental for social cognition

Therefore, such approach will be considering the experience of Social Works and their understandings about the development of the privative attribution, in the daily s professional exercise. This professional exercise is composed by the conditions of the wage-earning worker and mediated by the knowledge in ethics, politics, theories and methodologies that constitute the Social Work. Those knowledges enrich the Profession s legal propositions, as well as, the contemporaries debates about the apprenticeship that are consolidated by the Brazilian Association of Teaching and Research in Social Work (Abepss). This research will analyze this totality, under the reference of the critical theory critical and the use of the methodology of the Oral History, that allows the central issue in the political citizens and it evidences the meanings of their narrations, becoming faithful to the experience illustrated by the depositions of the Apprenticeship s Coordination in Social Work, such as, three Social Workers, as excellent citizens for the development of qualitative research. The bibliographical research will be composed by categories of the area of the Social Work, mainly, the Abepss s publications, and the Education, with the intention to not only illuminate the theoretical body of our profession as well the apprenticeship s supervision s exercise in Social Work / A presente pesquisa tem como temática a formação profissional em Serviço Social, com centralidade na supervisão de estágio, permitindo vislumbrar como objeto de pesquisa as atribuições do Assistente Social Supervisor de Campo de Estágio, sob a perspectiva de seu caráter mediador.

Lihoreau, Franck 30 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)

Sala Pala, Valérie 04 November 2005 (has links) (PDF)

女性領導者之後效懲罰行為對部屬評價與工作表現的影響:內在歸因及意圖歸因的中介效果 / The Impacts of Female Leaders’ Contingent Punishment Behaviors on Subordinate’s Evaluation and Work Performance:The Mediating Effects of Internal and Intentional Attributions

Chen, Yi Ting Unknown Date (has links)
Despite women’s increasing worforce participation, the gender gap in organizations has not changed appreciably nowadays. Women are still underrepredented in leadership positions in Taiwan. This research reveals a delimma female leaders may face when exhibiting Contignet Punishment Behavior, which is not only an important but a counterstereotypical management behavior. Since Contignet Punishment Behavior is always accompany with anger expression, we conducted two experiments to examine whether people are biased against female leaders when they exhibited it. Although study 1 showed only a small tendency that female leader is less evaluated than male leader, we found participants did give less evaluation and work less when they received contingent punishment from female leader than male leader, and the mediating role of internal and positive intentional attribution also found in study 2. Overall, we reveal penalties for women when they display important menagment behavior which is perceived violating gender-stereotypic prescriptions. Implication and practical applications are discussed.
