AUTONOMY SUPPORT: MODERATING STEREOTYPE THREAT IN AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS

Nadler, Dustin Ryan 01 December 2011 (has links)
This study examined the role of autonomy support (AS) in the relationship between stereotype threat (ST) and performance on a subset of the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) using a 2 x 2 factorial design. It was hypothesized that: 1. There would be significantly fewer correct answers in ST conditions compared to non-ST conditions, 2. There would be a significantly higher number of correct answers in AS conditions compared to non-AS conditions, 3.The relationship between ST conditions and performance would be moderated by AS conditions 206 African American college students from a mid-sized Midwestern university participated in the study. Performance, measured by the overall number of correct items answered from a set of 14 problems from the RSPM and also difficult and easy subsets of these problems, was the dependent variable and participants also completed a survey. Participants in ST conditions performed better than those in non-ST conditions. There was no difference in performance for participants in AS and non-AS conditions. High academic identified participants in AS conditions performed significantly better than similar participants in non-AS conditions on all items. Low academic identified participants in ST conditions performed better than those in non-ST conditions, only on easy items. These results provide information on the role of AS and item difficulty in stereotype threat situations.

Decolonial Autonomies: Fair Trade, Subsistence and the Everyday Practice of Food Sovereignty in the Highlands of Chiapas

Naylor, Lindsay 17 October 2014 (has links)
Recognition of the world food crisis has increased popular and scholarly work on alternatives to corporatized agriculture. Among many alternatives, fair trade and food sovereignty are two movements that have received a substantial amount of attention. Scholarly work on these topics, however, has focused on larger-scale issues of policy, access and benefits accrued to producers and consumers within such alternative food systems. Producer-focused studies of fair trade--a broader certification system designed to ameliorate inequalities in the marketplace--have examined access to markets, producer benefits and fairness. Analyses of struggles for food sovereignty in the developing world--which are directed at producer control over agricultural systems--are focused on creating radical alternatives to neoliberal food systems. However, very little is known about the everyday agricultural and food production practices which farmers deploy as part of their involvement with these broader politics. Attempts to create secure livelihoods and food resources do not exist in a vacuum; they take place alongside other strategies for survival. This is a situation that is well illustrated by indigenous farmers living in self-declared autonomous communities in Chenalhó, Chiapas, Mexico, where, cultivating subsistence crops and cash crops represents an effort to advance a political agenda for indigenous autonomy and create secure sources of food and income. Based on research and fieldwork from 2010-2013, in this dissertation I examine how farmers who are linked up with broader networks (such as fair trade certification) understand and practice autonomy. Drawing on a feminist geopolitical approach, this research presents a `scaled-down' analysis of autonomy, fair trade certification and practices of food sovereignty which is focused on the experience of farmers in self-declared autonomous communities. This approach provides critical insight into the daily negotiations of farmers as they interact with a range of networks. / 2015-10-17

Bordignon, Maria Eugênia Zanchet January 2017 (has links)
From the perspective of the French Discourse Analysis founded by Michel Pêcheux, one of the essential aspects of language is its ideological materiality. Ideology, for this reason, is embodied in discourse. Every enunciative act practiced brings with it a complex whole of effects of senses, memories, contexts and subjects that respond by the conditions in which each one of them was produced. Examining the ways in which ideology manifests itself in discourses, thus, is a fundamental stage for an understanding of how sense is constituted in discourses. The research object of the present study are the discourses of students of popular education - more precisely, of a PVP. It is a qualitative research that incorporated the technique of data generation with focus group through which a dialogue was established with the students of the PVP course who were interlocutors of the research. The main objective was an analysis about the effects of the sense of autonomy manifested in the discourses of these subjects in relation to themes that touch on relations of class, gender and ethnicity. In the search for an understanding of the effects of senses of autonomy identified in the students discourses, the theoretical and methodological apparatus of the Pecheuxtian Discourse Analysis was moved - from its founding conceptions to its toolbox, condition of operation of the AD as an intermission discipline. The Freirean conception of autonomy was configured as the touchstone of the interpretative gesture undertaken as its senses reverberated in the testimonies cut out for analysis. In the speeches analyzed, it was possible to recognize vestiges of identified struggle with certain discursive-ideological positions, which allows to realize that the principles of popular education in which the actions carried out in the PVP course investigated are affected, in a certain aspect, the ways of which the research interlocutor students mean themselves.

Haiachi, Marcelo de Castro January 2017 (has links)
This thesis presents as a theme the life course of the disabled athlete. The theory of the course of life, which consists of the path traveled by the individual, marked by events occurring over time, was used as a conceptual basis. These events have a direct link with obtaining the necessary resources for their human development: good health, good knowledge, a certain level of economic security and good social relations. Disability and sport appear as important transitions to the life course of disabled athletes. In this sense, the objective of the study is to describe the life course of the disabled athlete. It is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach that is justified by the need to understand the meanings, behaviors and situational characteristics of how people with disabilities build the world around them. Twenty - three athletes with a disability (physical - 16, visual - 4 and intellectual - 3), of congenital characteristic - 9 or acquired - 14 were interviewed. These athletes practicing different sports (collective - 06, individual - 08) with a (17 athletes) in relation to the female (06 athletes). For data interpretation, 19 hours, 11 minutes and 42 seconds of material obtained from interviews were collected. The coding and categorization was aided by using NVIVO software, version 11 pro, made available to the UFRGS community and anchored in content analysis. Five main categories were established (sociocultural context, disability as an event, sport as an event, sporting trajectory and marked transitions) were established a priori, with the support of the theoretical framework, and 19 subcategories. From the analysis emerged five subsequent subcategories. The family played a decisive role in the life course of athletes as well as political militancy through the creation of associations, participation in national commissions and positions of trust in public administration. The multiplier capacity to disseminate information and self-defense of the rights of persons with disabilities was also present in the study. This empowerment obtained from the involvement with sport and faith were points that approached the life course of these athletes being the obtaining of resources, mainly financial resources, the point of greater distance between them. Having an appropriate level of understanding of the actions that surround it, makes education a determining factor for the achievement of the profession and often of a better occupation in the labor market. In this sense, we seek to "use the knowledge to transform a life" by reinforcing the role of sport in the construction of autonomy and in the ability to guide its own course of life.

Emerim, Marc January 2018 (has links)
The conception of educational professionals about the moral development can influence the citizenship formation of students. Therefore, this study aims to find out how education professionals tell us they act, and, from that, to discover what conception they have about the moral development of IFRS students. For this, interviews were conducted based on the Piagetian clinical method with IFRS professionals - Farroupilha campus. The results reached three conceptions organized into categories: School Authority, School Obedience and Autonomy. In the first, the school assumes a role of authority and expects students to be ready to receive and accept school orders and rules without any resistance. In the second, the school expects to make the student understand that one must obey an authority and the rules emanated from it, and that this conduct leads to its full moral development. In the third, the family has initial competence for moral education, but from other social contacts (day care, school, others) and each new social relation, the student constructs his morality for citizenship. Finally, explanations for the moral development of students are deposited in the conduct of obedience to authority (heteronomy) and acts of will (autonomy).

Marquez, Janaina January 2017 (has links)
The present study aims to answer the research question: how can Mathematical Modeling contribute as a way for the learner to be the protagonist of their learning by aspiring to their autonomy? The research presents a task sequence proposal in a mathematical modeling-learning environment, divided into three parts. Such parts are the invitation to perform modeling, an experience with water theme, and an experiment with a theme of free student’s choice. The study was developed during the second semester of 2016, with a third year High School class from a municipal school in Sapucaia do Sul, at regular school hours. Based on the theory of Mathematical Modeling in a Socio-critical perspective of Barbosa (2001), elaboration of questions in an environment of Mathematical Modeling of Sant'Ana and Sant'Ana (2009) and in the pedagogy of autonomy of Paulo Freire (1996), and using the case study as a methodology, the present study showed that students can be active in the construction of their knowledge. In addition, it was noticed that, when it is offered an environment of freedom and consideration, respecting their choices, students will assume their responsibility for their learning, gradually building their preferences, their choices and their autonomy.

This research aims to study the participation of women in the Women's Network for the Social Control of Public Policy Strengthening - Salvador / Bahia and Development Network for Gender in Luanda. It aims at identifying and proposing intervention tools to enhance the monitoring of the implementation of policies that promote women’s autonomy, preceded by the III National Plan of Policies for Women (PNPM III) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The following question is being discussed: what tools are used for intervention and can leverage women’s participation in monitoring the implementation of autonomy policies as preceded in III PNPM and MGGs? We discuss the hypothesis that the work on networks provides a tool for the enhancement of the actions of monitoring of public policies on gender. The selected network experiments were chosen for their tradition in political action and organization of black women, which, in this research, we call Ganhadeiras, in Salvador, and Zungueiras in Luanda. Historically, they unite to articulate strategies of resistance and survival in the political-administrative system of the cities that insist on leaving them out of public space and decisions. The methodology used was action research and the research tools were: participant observation, semistructured interviews, and photographic records. The results obtained showed that in order to participate in monitoring the implementation of public policies women face major problems: lack of economic autonomy; problems in the form of internal and external communication; restrictions on access to information; and intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts that interfere with the harmony of the group. Therefore, we proposed a Social Management Technology Tool (TGS), which we believe can contribute to help overcome the difficulties identified, with possibilities to expand the actions and proposed strategies to other contexts with similar features, leveraging the work of women’s networks.

Interrupce u nezletilých - etické souvislosti / Abortion for underage people - ethical context

FILIPOVÁ, Petra January 2013 (has links)
FILIPOVÁ, P. Abortion for underage people ? ethical context. České Budějovice, 2013. A diploma thesis written under Faculty of Health and Social Studies, the thesis advisor Mgr. et Mgr. Ondřej Doskočil, Th.D. The diploma thesis tries to describe the issue of abortion for underage applicants and related context. This sensitive issue is regulated by the Law no 66/1986, of abortion. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The first part deals with contemporary condition of abortion for underage people in general context. The following topics are analysed in the next step: historical context of abortion in the Czech Republic, relation of abortion and medicine, justificatory reasons of abortion and ethical context of this sensitive issue. Methods of abortion are described in the following section. One of the most crucial chapters is the consent and the steps which are taken in connection with underage patients. In the research part of the thesis, the strategy of qualitative research was used, which was performed by the method of interrogation. The semistructured interview was chosen as a technique for the interrogation. The research file consisted of 5 male and 3 female doctors from gynaecological surgeries and from the women department of hospitals from different parts of the Czech Republic. The aim of the diploma thesis was to describe the recent situation of providing consent about performing abortion of underage applicants for this medical intervention; to find out and describe how male and female doctors of gynaecological surgeries and women departments of hospitals deals with the whole abortion of underage people issue as professionals but also personally. The last of the generated aims was to point out ethical context connected with the issue on the basis of new-found information. In order to reach the aims mentioned above, we used a set of questions which were focused on the abortion for underage applicants procedure and on the issue of the consent about performing this medical intervention. In the discussion chapter, the answers from the interviews are summarized and those answers are compared with available literature and they are supported with arguments. In the end, thesis which can serve as hypothesis for possible quantitative research were defined. From the research, it came out that questioned male and female doctors prefer legal aspect of medical care when deciding at the expense of ethical aspects and they also notice a conflict between legal adjustment of abortion for underage people and legal adjustment of other medical interventions connected with this age group. It also came out that laws should origin from the deep conviction of the whole society because nobody cannot be sure how he or she would act in this situation. Interviewees emphasise that an underage girl should learn how to act with responsibility. If she feels mature enough for sexual life, she should also bear all the consequences of her decision. The thesis also refers to the question of the genesis of life as modern biology proves uniqueness of an individual from the moment of conception. Outcomes of the research could be used for description of the whole situation connected with abortion for underage people, for discovering this issue and extension of laymen and professional community awareness. The research could be also useful for helping professions.

Educação e autonomia no ciberespaço : interrogações sobre a EAD on-line / Autonomy and Education in cyberspace : questions about the DLE online

Wanderley da Silva 30 April 2010 (has links)

This paper aims to understand and analyze the consequences of using the booklet learnship education system as structured material for the organization of educational work in school. The methodological approach is qualitative research through case study in a city located in São Paulo State, in two public schools that exclusively serve the early years of elementary education. The investigation focused on the period 2009-2012, with a view to effective public-private partnership in adopting booklet learnship education system, and technical and educational pedagogical support. Starting the presupposition that the Administrative Reforming the Brazilian State, in 1995, interfered in education policy, directed the incorporation of management models and the inclusion of the private sector in public education, aiming supposedly of improved the quality of education and ensuring school autonomy. The theoretical-methodological procedure understood the literature review related to the theme of research, data collection, information and official documents (desk research), school routines with a view to using the booklet learnship education system, perceptions of professionals and users that use of the material booklet learnship through semi-structured interviews. We note that the use of booklet learnship education system influences the organization of educational work and Political Pedagogical Project of the schools, because it standardizes and homogenizes the curricular content, and exclude teacher’s authorship of his own work, restricting their pedagogical autonomy. However, in the schools reside possibilities for the exercise of the autonomy, because by creating other strategies for the (re) organization of the teaching practice, the professional teachers have created new possibilities for organization of educational work in schools. Despite the limited nature of autonomy in school contexts, we think that these are alternatives that can ...
