Confronted with the question of the actuality of philosophy, Adorno targeted a pressing task, namely the interpretation of a world that leaves individuals unsatisfied. Imagination was designated the organon of such a task. From elements scattered throughout a body of work that spans nearly five decades (1924-1969), this dissertation attempts to reconstruct his thinking regarding this faculty. The first section focuses on Adorno's critique of the role of the productive and reproductive imagination in the Kantian theory of knowledge. Our attention then shifts to Adorno's aesthetics and its emphasis on sublimation. Finally, the third chapter interrogates the theme of the ban on the images and the limits it imposes on the critical potential of the imagination.

A Novel Highly Accurate Wireless Wearable Human Locomotion Tracking and Gait Analysis System via UWB RadiosShaban, Heba Ahmed 09 June 2010 (has links)
Gait analysis is the systematic study of human walking. Clinical gait analysis is the process by which quantitative information is collected for the assessment and decision-making of any gait disorder. Although observational gait analysis is the therapist's primary clinical tool for describing the quality of a patient's walking pattern, it can be very unreliable. Modern gait analysis is facilitated through the use of specialized equipment. Currently, accurate gait analysis requires dedicated laboratories with complex settings and highly skilled operators. Wearable locomotion tracking systems are available, but they are not sufficiently accurate for clinical gait analysis. At the same time, wireless healthcare is evolving. Particularly, ultra wideband (UWB) is a promising technology that has the potential for accurate ranging and positioning in dense multi-path environments. Moreover, impulse-radio UWB (IR-UWB) is suitable for low-power and low-cost implementation, which makes it an attractive candidate for wearable, low-cost, and battery-powered health monitoring systems. The goal of this research is to propose and investigate a full-body wireless wearable human locomotion tracking system using UWB radios. Ultimately, the proposed system should be capable of distinguishing between normal and abnormal gait, making it suitable for accurate clinical gait analysis. / Ph. D.

Evaluating the role of non governmental organisations in global governance : case studies of two campaignsSaaiman, Hurchele 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is a study of the growmg importance of Non Governmental Organisations
(NGOs) in global governance. Global governance is defined as a complex and
dynamic process that deals with issues that go beyond the capacity of national
governments, that is distinguished from global government because of an absence of a
central authority that can ensure compliance and the presence of a wide range of
actors including non-state actors. The theory of Complex Multilateralism captures the
role of NGOs and NGO coalitions well. Using this theory as a theoretical framework,
this study focuses on two recent transnational NGO campaigns (The International
Campaign to Ban Landmines [fCBL) and the NGOs against Arms Trade) to
determine why some NGO campaigns are more successful than others. The theory of
Complex Multilateralism in combination with extensive information on different
types of NGOs and their activities on national and international levels, makes it
possible to identify criteria that can determine success. These criteria are: a realistic
goal, the issue area (type, number, salience and techniques used to frame the issue),
government and intergovernmental organisation (lGO) commitment, access to IGOs,
extensive expertise, effective use of the media, effective use of information
technology, activity variance, leadership, persuasive and influential spokespersons,
membership and funds. These criteria are described, defined and then applied to the
above-mentioned transnational NGO campaigns. The main finding was that the ICBL
was the more successful of the two campaigns because it had more of the criteria for
success. In this case the most important reasons for success is: a realistic goal, the
focus on a single issue and the effective framing of the issue, significant government
commitment as well as good leadership. Although, the criteria that were developed
can hardly be universalised, they do provide a useful starting point for further research
into this important field in International Studies.
Organisasies (NROs) in "global governance" Laasgenoemde konsep word gedefinieer
koalisies in hierdie proses.
meer geslaag is as ander.
sowel as goeie leierskap.

"Coming soon to a neighborhood near you...": The very real effects and great human costs of fake news : A critical discourse analysis of Breitbart News Network's representation of Muslim and Syrian refugees in the weeks leading up to the 2016 presidential electionLaChine, John January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how a Breitbart News Network text represented Muslim and Syrian refugees in the weeks leading up to the 2016 United States presidential election. Using a methodological framework based on Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis, the analysis seeks to reveal the linguistic semiotic choices made by the text producer in the representation of Muslim and Syrian refugees and to explain how these semiotic choices were used to achieve their effect. By revealing these linguistic semiotic choices, the beliefs, attitudes, and ideologies that are present in the text─ but not necessarily easily seen─ can be brought out into the open. Once out in the open, they can be critically questioned, contested, and they can be examined to find out how their beliefs, attitudes, and ideologies can be understood to have destructive consequences on the audience and the groups of people they represent.

Konkurenční doložka / Non-competition ClauseKopsová, Adéla January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to be a comprehensive analysis of the non-competition clause in Czech Labour law. The reason for my research is to examine the non-competition clause, compare and contrast its advantages and disadvantages and to make a conclusion, whether the current legislation meets the requirements of both contracting parties. The thesis is composed of four chapters, each of them dealing with different aspects of non-competition clause, its history and its current problems. Chapter One is introductory and describes the competition in general and in Labour law. The chapter is subdivided into two parts. Part One describes the difference between the competition during the employment relationship and after termination of the employment. Part Two describes the basic terminology and the current state of a non-competition clause. Chapter Two focuses on the history of the non-competition clause in our legislation and illustrates the evolution of such institute. This chapter is subdivided into three parts. Each of them focuses on a specific historical period in the evolution of the non-competition clause. Chapter Three examines non-competition clause in the recent legislative history and comprises of four parts. Part One contains the wording of a non-competition clause in the Labour law legislation...

Étude et conception d'une couche physique UWB-IR pour les réseaux BAN / Study and specification of a UWB-IR physical layer for Body Area NetworksMebaley Ekome, Stéphane 06 November 2012 (has links)

Mining from the Lens of Ecological Law: Obstacles and Opportunities for Re-formationSbert Carlsson, Carla 14 May 2019 (has links)
Ecological law is a legal paradigm that is emerging in response to the current ecological crisis. This thesis explores the main challenges and opportunities in existing laws, particularly in the context of mining, for a shift to this new paradigm. A synthesis of the main critiques, scientific and economic concepts, legal scholarship and proposals that contribute to the theory of ecological law is presented, along with a discussion of the relationship and potential synergies of ecological law with Indigenous legal traditions and with Green Legal Theory. An analytical tool to help improve the understanding of what a shift to ecological law would entail–a lens of ecological law–is proposed, building on ecological law scholarship. The lens of ecological law consists of three principles of ecological law: ecocentrism, ecological primacy and ecological justice. This lens is applied to three different legal approaches to mining in order to reflect on the implications for a shift to ecological law in this sector: El Salvador’s ban on metal mining; mineral extraction proposed in Ontario’s Ring of Fire; and mining in the context of the rights of Mother Earth and vivir bien recognized in Bolivian law. Conclusions on the obstacles and opportunities for a shift to ecological law in mining, and recommendations on the ecological law re-formation of mining and on further research are offered in closing. Ecological law promises to be an important part of building an ecologically just society.

The band around 60 GHz is interesting for BAN applications mainly for lowerinterference than at microwave frequencies, wide available band adapted to On-Off Keying(OOK) modulation for low energy consumption and low data rate communication (under10 Mbps), antenna miniaturization. Nevertheless, due to high attenuation at this frequency, the design of a reliable and energy-effective communications for BANs requires a detailedanalysis of the body channel. A planar and compact SIW horn antenna was designed and usedfor body channel measurements at 60 GHz. The main contribution in the antenna design is thebandwidth enhancement covering the whole available band around 60 GHz compared to thesame antenna type available at this frequency. The on-body measurements with this antennashow that short-distance and LOS (Line Of Sight) links are possible at 60 GHz. The bodydynamic is taken into account by statistical off-body channel measurements. For the firsttime, measurements are done for the same scenarios at 60 GHz and another frequency in theUltra WideBand suitable with OOK impulse radio modulation. By taking into accounttransmission power standards and low power consumption receivers sensitivity in theliterature, the potentiality of 60 GHz for BAN is shown with an outage probability lower than8 % whereas this parameter is lower than 15 % at 4 GHz. When characterizing antenna onbody, difficulties arise for antenna de-embedding due to the antenna-body coupling. In fact, the antenna gain depends on transmitter-receiver distance on body. For the first time, aformulation of the vertical dipole gain on body is given. Also a new theoretical approachbased on the complex images method is proposed to compare two types of canonical antennaradiating on body. A vertical dipole and different rectangular apertures are normalizedthrough their input impedance with the same accepted power. The aperture input impedanceformulation has been developed during this study. The aperture efficiencies are 10% higherwhen antennas are at a height lower than 3 mm above the body phantom. The received powerincreases with the antenna size only for phantom direct touch, the difference among antennasis lower than 4 dB for the considered antennas limited with a monomode configuration.

Logics of Knowledge and Cryptography : Completeness and ExpressivenessCohen, Mika January 2007 (has links)
An understanding of cryptographic protocols requires that we examine the knowledge of protocol participants and adversaries: When a participant receives a message, does she know who sent it? Does she know that the message is fresh, and not merely a replay of some old message? Does a network spy know who is talking to whom? This thesis studies logics of knowledge and cryptography. Specifically, the thesis addresses the problem of how to make the concept of knowledge reflect feasible computability within a Kripke-style semantics. The main contributions are as follows. 1. A generalized Kripke semantics for first-order epistemic logic and cryptography, where the later is modeled using private constants and arbitrary cryptographic operations, as in the Applied Pi-calculus. 2. An axiomatization of first-order epistemic logic which is sound and complete relative to an underlying theory of cryptographic terms, and to an omega-rule for quantifiers. Besides standard axioms and rules from first-order epistemic logic, the axiomatization includes some novel axioms for the interaction between knowledge and cryptography. 3. Epistemic characterizations of static equivalence and Dolev-Yao message deduction. 4. A generalization of Kripke semantics for propositional epistemic logic and symmetric cryptography. 5. Decidability, soundness and completeness for propositional BAN-like logics with respect to message passing systems. Completeness and decidability are generalised to logics induced from an arbitrary base of protocol specific assumptions. 6. An epistemic definition of message deduction. The definition lies between weaker and stronger versions of Dolev-Yao deduction, and coincides with weaker Dolev-Yao regarding all atomic messages. For composite messages, the definition withstands a well-known counterexample to Dolev-Yao deduction. 7. Protocol examples using mixes, a Crowds style protocol, and electronic payments. / QC 20100524
