Hidden Doublings: A Context for Understanding Jean d'Arras's Mélusine ou la Noble Histoire de Lusignan

At the end of the fourteenth century Jean d’Arras rewrote a popular folktale. The tale told how Mélusine, a fairy who was serpent from the navel down every Saturday, married a knight and founded the fortress of Lusignan. In his introduction to the tale Jean d’Arras presents the ideas of four authority figures to convince the reader that fantastical things are possible and that his work should be taken seriously. These authority figures are David, Aristotle, Paul and Gervaise de Tilbury. It is the contention of this thesis that Jean d’Arras presents these figures in his introduction to provide context and serve as doubles for characters in the narration as well as convince the reader to take the work seriously. Through his allusion to Tilbury, Jean d’Arras establishes a context and a doubling for the story-line which he so repetitiously tells. Through his allusion to David we see a doubling for Raymondin, who in fact bears the name of earthly king, a position which David held in archetype. Through his allusion to Paul we see a doubling for Geoffrey à la grande dent, enfant terrible who becomes a responsible leader. And finally we suggest that Aristotle is a type for Jean d’Arras himself, who is presenting to his reader a methodical study of the telos of earthly kings. The thesis contains a discussion of these four individuals, how they were viewed in the late fourteenth-century and what the implications are for reading the text with them in mind. When viewed in the light of these comparisons the text can be seen, not only as a fantastical story, but as political commentary. Jean d’Arras glorifies the Duke of Berry, his patron, by connecting him to a supernatural being, but he also suggests throughout the narration, that the true justification for nobility and political power is not a supernatural connection, but a practical ability to deal with earthly affairs.

Electron Transport In Single Molecule Magnet Transistors And Optical Lambda Transitions In The Nitrogen-vacancy Center In Diamon

This thesis presents some theoretical studies dealing with quantum interference effects in electron transport through single molecule magnet transistors and a study on optical non-conserving spin transitions in the Nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The thesis starts with a brief general introduction to the physics of quantum transport through single electron transistors. Afterwards, the main body of the thesis is divided into three studies: (i) In chapter (2) we describe the properties of single molecule magnets and the Berry phase interference present in this nanomagnets. We then propose a way to detect quantum interference experimentally in the current of a single molecule magnet transistor using polarized leads. We apply our theoretical results to the newly synthesized nanomagnet Ni4. (ii) In chapter (3) we review the Kondo effect and present a microscopic derivation of the Kondo Hamiltonian suitable for full and half integer spin nanomagnets. We then calculate the conductance of the single molecule magnet transistor in the presence of the Kondo effect for Ni4 and show how the Berry phase interference becomes temperature dependent. (iii) We conclude in chapter (4) with a theoretical study of the single Nitrogen vacancy defect center in diamond. We show that it is possible to have spin non-conserving transitions via the hyperfine interaction and propose a way to write and read quantum information using circularly polarized light by means of optical Lambda transitions in this solid state system.

Physics of quantum fluids in two-dimensional topological systems / Physique des fluides quantiques dans des systèmes topologiques bidimensionnels

Cette thèse est consacrée à la description de la physique à une particule ainsi qu'à celle de fluides quantiques bosoniques dans des systèmes topologiques. Les deux premiers chapitres sont introductifs. Dans le premier, nous introduisons des éléments de théorie des bandes et les quantités géométriques et topologiques associées : tenseur métrique quantique, courbure de Berry, nombre de Chern. Nous discutons différents modèles et réalisations expérimentales donnant lieu à des effets topologiques. Dans le second chapitre, nous introduisons les condensats de Bose-Einstein ainsi que les excitons-polaritons de cavité.La première partie des résultats originaux discute des phénomènes topologiques à une particule dans des réseaux en nid d'abeilles. Cela permet de comparer deux modèles théoriques qui mènent à l'effet Hall quantique anormal pour les électrons et les photons dû à la présence d'un couplage spin-orbite et d'un champ Zeeman. Nous étudions aussi l'effet Hall quantique de vallée photonique à l'interface entre deux réseaux de cavités avec potentiels alternés opposés.Dans une seconde partie, nous discutons de nouveaux effets qui émergent due à la présence d'un fluide quantique interagissant décrit par l’équation de Gross-Pitaevskii dans ces systèmes. Premièrement, il est montré que les interactions spin anisotropes donnent lieu à des transitions topologiques gouvernées par la densité de particules pour les excitations élémentaires d’un condensat spineur d’exciton-polaritons.Ensuite, nous montrons que les tourbillons quantifiés d'un condensat scalaire dans un système avec effet Hall quantique de vallée, manifestent une propagation chirale le long de l'interface contrairement aux paquets d'ondes linéaires. La direction de propagation de ces derniers est donnée par leur sens de rotation donnant lieu à un transport de pseudospin de vallée protégé topologiquement, analogue à l’effet Hall quantique de spin.Enfin, revenant aux effets géométriques linéaires, nous nous sommes concentrés sur l’effet Hall anormal. Dans ce contexte, nous présentons une correction non-adiabatique aux équations semi-classiques décrivant le mouvement d’un paquet d’ondes qui s’exprime en termes du tenseur géométrique quantique. Nous proposons un protocole expérimental pour mesurer cette quantité dans des systèmes photonique radiatifs. / This thesis is dedicated to the description of both single-particle and bosonic quantum fluid Physics in topological systems. After introductory chapters on these subjects, I first discuss single-particle topological phenomena in honeycomb lattices. This allows to compare two theoretical models leading to quantum anomalous Hall effect for electrons and photons and to discuss the photonic quantum valley Hall effect at the interface between opposite staggered cavity lattices.In a second part, I present some phenomena which emerge due to the interplay of the linear topological effects with the presence of interacting bosonic quantum fluid described by mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. First, I show that the spin-anisotropic interactions lead to density-driven topological transitions for elementary excitations of a condensate loaded in the polariton quantum anomalous Hall model (thermal equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium quasi-resonant excitation configurations). Then, I show that the vortex excitations of a scalar condensate in a quantum valley Hall system, contrary to linear wavepackets, can exhibit a robust chiral propagation along the interface, with direction given by their winding in real space, leading to an analog of quantum spin Hall effect for these non-linear excitations. Finally, coming back to linear geometrical effects, I will focus on the anomalous Hall effect exhibited by an accelerated wavepacket in a two-band system. In this context, I present a non-adiabatic correction to the known semiclassical equations of motion which can be expressed in terms of the quantum geometric tensor elements. We also propose a protocol to directly measure the tensor components in radiative photonic systems.

Thermoelektrische Transportuntersuchungen an topologischen und korrelierten Elektronensystemen

In dieser Arbeit werden Messungen elektrischer, thermischer und insbesondere thermoelektrischer Transportkoeffizienten in topologischen Weyl-Halbmetall-Kandidaten sowie in eisenbasierten Hochtemperatur-Supraleitern vorgestellt, analysiert und diskutiert. In TaAs und TaP, zwei Weyl-Halbmetall-Kandidaten mit gebrochener Inversionssymmetrie, liefert das anomale Verhalten des Nernst-Signals in Abhängigkeit des Magnetfeldes Hinweise auf die Existenz von Weyl-Punkten in der Nähe der Fermi-Fläche, wobei sich die Verschiebung des chemischen Potenzials sowie ein Lifshitz-Übergang detektieren lassen. Die Temperaturabhängigkeit des Nernst-Signales erlaubt außerdem Rückschlüsse auf den Abstand der Weyl-Punkte zur Fermi-Fläche. In Mn3Ge, einem Weyl-Halbmetall-Kandidaten mit gebrochener Zeitumkehrsymmetrie, zeigt sich für alle gemessenen Temperaturen ein komplett anomales Verhalten des Nernst-Signals in Abhängigkeit des Magnetfeldes mit einer rechteckigen Hysterese bei kleinen Feldern, welches im Vergleich mit Daten der Magnetisierung einen eindeutigen Hinweis auf die Präsenz von Weyl-Punkten in diesem Material liefert. Mithilfe eines minimalen theoretischen Modells zweier Weyl-Punkte in der Nähe der Fermi-Fläche lässt sich eine Anpassungsformel für die Temperaturabhängigkeit des Nernst-Signals gewinnen, aus welcher sowohl geometrische Parameter der Bandstruktur als auch die Stärke der Berry-Krümmung an der Fermi-Energie extrahiert werden können. Für eisenbasierte Supraleiter besteht seit Langem der Verdacht, dass nematische Fluktuationen einen Einfluss auf die Supraleitung haben. Hier vorgestellte theoretische Betrachtungen zeigen im Rahmen eines Zweibandmodells eindeutig, dass eine endliche nematische Kopplung zu einer starken Erhöhung und einer nicht-monotonen Abhängigkeit des Nernst-Koeffizienten von der Dotierung führt, welcher ein Maximum über dem supraleitenden Dom aufweist. Dies wird anhand von Nernst-Messungen in Co-dotiertem LaFeAsO bestätigt. Ein Vergleich der Ergebnisse des Nernst-Effekts mit Elasto-Widerstandsmessungen enthüllt eine erstaunliche Ähnlichkeit der Dotierabhängigkeiten. Die Daten werden außerdem mit Messungen des Nernst-Effekts an Rh-dotiertem BaFe2As2 verglichen, wobei ebenfalls eine Erhöhung im Bereich optimaler Dotierung nachgewiesen werden kann. In Rh-dotietem BaFe2As2 zeigt sich jedoch ein Unterschied zwischen Elasto-Widerstands- und Nernst-Messungen, woraus abgeleitet wird, dass Elasto-Widerstandsmessungen kein vollständiges Bild der nematischen Fluktuation liefern. Der Nernst-Effekt ist hingegen aufgrund der Sensitivität auf nematische Fluktuationen universell in zwei Vertretern verschiedener Familien eisenbasierter Supraleiter maximal im Bereich des supraleitenden Doms. Dies liefert, zusammen mit den theoretischen Betrachtungen, einen starken Hinweis auf den Einfluss nematischer Fluktuationen auf die Supraleitung. / In this work the electric, thermal, and thermoelectric transport properties of several topological Weyl semimetal candidates and iron-based superconductors are investigated. In TaAs and TaP, two Weyl semimetal candidates with broken inversion symmetry, the Nernst signal exhibits anomalous behaviour as a function of magnetic field, consistent with Weyl points close to the Fermi surface. Furthermore, a shift of the chemical potential and a Lifshitz transition are detected. The temperature dependence of the Nernst signal allows for an estimation of the energy of the Weyl points with respect to the Fermi level. In Mn3Ge, a Weyl semimetal candidate with broken time reversal symmetry, the Nernst signal shows completely anomalous behaviour as a function of magnetic field that can be obtained at all measured temperatures. At low fields the signal exhibits a rectangular hysteresis cycle. A comparison with magnetization measurements evidently shows that these effects are caused by Weyl points lying close to the Fermi surface. With the help of a minimal model of two Weyl points in the vicinity of the Fermi level, a fitting formula of the temperature dependence of the Nernst signal can be obtained. The fit provides geometrical properties of the band structure, such as the $\boldsymbol{k}$-space separation of the Weyl points, their energy with respect to the Fermi level as well as the strength of the Berry curvature close to the Fermi energy. For a long time nematic fluctuations have been suspected to influence superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. A theoretical analysis, with the help of a two-band model, shows clearly that a finite nematic coupling causes a strong enhancement and non-monotonic behaviour of the Nernst coefficient, which develops a maximum above the superconducting dome. These findings are confirmed by Nernst measurements in Co-doped LaFeAsO. A comparison with elasto-resistivity measurements shows a stunning similarity of the doping dependencies of both quantities. Furthermore the data are compared with measurements on Rh-doped BaFe2As2, which also exhibits an enhancement of the Nernst coefficient in the region of optimal doping. However, in Rh-doped BaFe2As2 a difference between elastoresistivity and Nernst measurements is obtained, indicating that the elasto-resistivity measurements are not universally sensitive to nematic fluctuations. The Nernst effect, on the other hand, is enhanced in the vicinity of the superconducting dome in two members of different families of iron-based superconductors. Together with theoretical insights, these results provide strong evidence for the influence of nematic fluctuations on superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors.

壹、研究目的: 近年來我國經濟蓬勃發展,因此國民生活型態日趨多樣化與複雜 化,消費者一次購足一段期間生活必需品的需要由是產生。斯值此時,超級市場在國 民日常生活中所扮演的角色益形重要。是故,本研究乃針對超級市場之等待線設計及 服務品質進行研究,期能對超級市場業者之作業系統設計及品質管理有所助益。 貳、文獻探討: 本研究參考Parasuraman, Zeichamal及Berry 等提出之「服務業 品質的觀念性模式」加以修正而發展出品質模式。根據Maister 提出之「等待線之心 理假設」, 及Cooley, Ishikawa, Kristiansen及多篇等符線模擬之相關文獻,進行 等待線之探討。 參、研究方法: 本研究利用電腦模擬研究超級市場之人力、設備佈置與顧客等候 時間、設備利用率等變數之關係。並以問卷調查、統計檢定衡量消費者等待心理及消 費者預期服務品質與管理者對於服務品質認知之差距。 肆、研究內容: 以台北市為範圍,選取俱有代表性的典型超級市場為模擬對象, 進行實地調查。並依李克尺度設計問卷以了解服務品質屬性之重要性及屬性滿意度之 認知差距以人口統計變數對於各該項目之影響。 伍、研究結果: 本研究發現管理者對消費者自覺服務水準之認知與消費者接受服 務之感受存在頗大差距。此外,各超級市場之人力、設備普遍未能妥慎規劃。

Probing and modeling of optical resonances in rolled-up structures

Optical microcavities (OMs) are receiving increasing attention owing to their potential applications ranging from cavity quantum electrodynamics, optical detection to photonic devices. Recently, rolled-up structures have been demonstrated as OMs which have gained considerable attention owing to their excellent customizability. To fully exploit this customizability, asymmetric and topological rolled-up OMs are proposed and investigated in addition to conventional rolled-up OMs in this thesis. By doing so, novel phenomena and applications are demonstrated in OMs. The fabrication of conventional rolled-up OMs is presented in details. Then, dynamic mode tuning by a near-field probe is performed on a conventional rolled-up OM. Next, mode splitting in rolled-up OMs is investigated. The effect of single nanoparticles on mode splitting in a rolled-up OM is studied. Because of a non-synchronized oscillating shift for different azimuthal split modes induced by a single nanoparticle at different positions, the position of the nanoparticle can be determined on the rolled-up OM. Moreover, asymmetric rolled-up OMs are fabricated for the purpose of introducing coupling between spin and orbital angular momenta (SOC) of light into OMs. Elliptically polarized modes are observed due to the SOC of light. Modes with an elliptical polarization can also be modeled as coupling between the linearly polarized TE and TM mode in asymmetric rolled-up OMs. Furthermore, by adding a helical geometry to rolled-up structures, Berry phase of light is introduced into OMs. A -π Berry phase is generated for light in topological rolled-up OMs so that modes have a half-integer number of wavelengths. In order to obtain a deeper understanding for existing rolled-up OMs and to develop the new type of rolled-up OMs, complete theoretical models are also presented in this thesis.

Il cambio climatico sta inducendo una precocità negli fasi fenologiche della vite, tra cui la maturazione, un fenomeno che si verifica spesso nelle stagioni più calde e che porta a vini sbilanciati. La composizione della bacca consiste principalmente di metaboliti primari e secondari. Entrambi sono sensibili all'ambiente e alla gestione del vigneto. Di conseguenza, il cambiamento climatico può influenzare la composizione delle bacche e modificare la qualità del vino e la tipicità. La defogliazione può influenzare la composizione della bacca, modulando il bilancio vegeto-produttivo. Durante i tre anni del dottorato di ricerca, diversi rapporti tra superficie fogliare e uva sono state studiate per chiarire i meccanismi d'azione contro il processo di maturazione. In questa ricerca è stato studiato l'effetto della severità, tempismo e la posizione di defogliazione su due vitigni, Sangiovese e Cabernet Sauvignon. / Global warming is inducing a general earliness in the onset of grapevine phenological stages including ripening, a phenomenon that occurs often in the hottest seasons and which leads to unbalanced wines. Grape berry composition mainly consists of primary and secondary metabolites. Both are sensitive to environment and viticultural management. As a consequence, climate change can affect berry composition and modify wine quality and typicity. Leaf removal techniques can impact berry composition by modulating the source-to-sink balance. During the three years of PhD, different leaf-to-fruit ratios were studied to clarify action mechanisms vs the ripening process. In this research was studied the effect of severity, timing and position of leaf removal on two cultivars, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
