I experienced quite a big ambivalence over the responsibility I wanted to take but couldn ́t : A qualitative study of biological children ́s perspective on conflict and conflict management in a foster family

Lindström, Johanna, Malik, Majid January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of the study has been to increase the knowledge about biological children's perspective on conflicts and conflict management, as well as to study the importance of the role of conflicts in foster families. The need for the study was based on the fact that conflicts between biological children and foster children are a common cause of cancelation of fostering in foster families. The essay has a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with eight respondents aged 18-28. Respondents share the common experience about what it means to be a biological child in a foster family. The study has its theoretical point of view in a childhood sociological perspective and the result was interpreted thematically and then analyzed using conflict and conflict management perspectives as well as role theory. The results show that the phenomena and situations thatbiological children need to relate to within the context of being part of a foster family include systemic, interpersonal and individual conflicts, whereas individual conflicts have been shown to be most prominent in terms of ambivalent feelings and compunction. The study also shows that biological children handle conflicts in different ways. The visible management styles are avoiding, adaptive, compromising and collaborative, where avoiding and adapting proved most prominent. The result further shows thatbiological children occupy different roles in the foster family, which is comprised of responsibility and participation in different ways, which can result in different individual conflicts. The respondents in the study also says that either more support from the family or support from outside would have benefited their experience of being a foster family.

Biologiska barn i familjehem, vad hände sen?

Gråhns, Hanne, Sahlström Moen, Elenor January 2018 (has links)

Eek, Sandra, Larsson, Maria January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to illustrate the consequences of the family home for the biological children when there are changes in the siblingship. We found several contradictions in the children's stories, which we interpret as the mission is complex. The change in the siblingship is partly experienced as challenging. One of the challenges for our respondents has been that they act on a new role, which is a process that has taken a long time to handle. The majority of our respondents speak positively about their changed situation and the assignment as a whole. They believe that the increased responsibility that the assignment meant meant that they had a different role in the family that helped them feel more seriously taken. The new role has proved to mean greater freedom, but also given them new opportunities. However, the change has aroused the need to maintain a certain structure within the family and sometimes to get back to what the family did before the mission began. Several of our respondents express a wish for a place of refuge where they have the opportunity to be "common", which we interpreted as before they got a new position in the siblings. The study results indicate that the assignment is complex. The consequence of getting a new position in the siblingship is partly experienced as challenging and partly as an opportunity. Paradoxically, we have found that the biological children, on the one hand, find the mission and the new expectations that come with the new sibling position as liberation, and on the other hand they express a need to let everything be as usual.      The study has been conducted with nine respondents through both qualitative semistructured interviews via an interview guide and structured interviews in questionnaire. To understand the empirical material, it has been analyzed using several theoretical concepts from system theory and a sociological role theory. We have also chosen to relate empirin to the previous research done on the subject. The starting point of the study has been that the position in the siblings carries a role as there are different expectations of the different roles. The idea that one's position in sibling carries an individual affects an individual makes it interesting to raise the children in family homes to understand important aspects of acting siblings while changing the position that is used to. The study aimed at clarifying how the biological children experienced the change in the siblingship that the mission meant.

They will become more like a subordinate” : Reasoning and actions of the family home secretary regarding biological children in the family home

Egerbo, Maria January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the study was to understand how the family home secretary reasons and thinks and how they express themselves in their actions towards the family home’s biological children. The method used is qualitative semi-structured interviews, involving six family home secretaries from four different municipalities. The results were analyzed with the help of two theories – the theory of grassroots bureaucracy and the sociology of childhood theory. From the collective views of all informants, the biological children’s attitude towards the family home mandate is considered important. However, participation from the biological children is limited. Education and guidance is directed solely towards the family home parents, without any active involvement from the biological children in these efforts. Some of the informants stress that they as professionals must be better at paying attention to the biological children than what prevails today. The collective results show that family home parents are expected to take great responsibility for their biological children as well as their participation and well-being within the family home mandate.

De biologiska barnens roll i familjehemsuppdraget : En kvalitativ studie utifrån socialtjänstens perspektiv / The biological children's role in the foster family care arrangement : A qualitative study through the perspective of the Social services

Persson, Nathalie, Karlsson, Saara January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the study was to gain knowledge about what role the foster carers’ biological children play in foster family care and also gain a deeper understanding of the biological children´s significance in a foster family care arrangement. The aim of the study has been conducted through the perspective of the Social services. The data collection consists of eight individual qualitative and semi-structured interviews with social workers who are currently working with foster families there biological children are living at home. The new childhood sociology and the concept of participation serve as the base of the theoretical framework and have been applied to the analysis of this study. The study shows that the respondents have a positive attitude towards the biological children´s presence in the foster families. They value the biological children´s function in the families as important and should thus not be forgotten. At the same time, there are no clear guidelines for how the social worker should work with foster carers’ biological children. The contact between the social worker and the biological children mostly goes through the children’s parents. The role of the biological children is not always clearly defined in the foster family care arrangement and their involvement can be perceived as insignificant. Furthermore the respondents terminates that no special support designed for biological children in foster families exists. Several respondents also reflect upon that they want to avoid burdening the biological children with responsibility that is not theirs to bear. The role of the biological children in the foster family care and their significance in the foster family care arrangement concludes therefore acknowledged by the social worker but not always recognized.

De biologiska barnens betydelse för familjehemsprocessen : En kvalitativ studie ur ett professionsperspektiv / The importance of biological children for the family home process : A qualitative study from a professional perspective

Georgsson, Ida, Sjöblom, Ida January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to understand from a professional perspective the importance of the biological children’s participation in the family home process and how family home social workers use their room for maneuver to involve the biological children in the family home process. The method used to answer the aim and the research questions was semi-structured interviews with seven women that work as family home social workers and the empirical material was analyzed through a thematic analysis. The theoretical framework we used to analyze the results was Lipsky's theory of Street-level bureaucracy and discretion. The main findings of this study were that family home social workers think that the participation of biological children is important both for the child's own wellbeing, for the whole family's dynamics and for the outcome of a family home placement. The most common methods used by family home social workers to involve biological children are relationship building and different types of conversations depending on the children's age and maturity. The study showsin the family home investigation, there are formalized guidelines that the family home social workers work according to but there are no general guidelines in the work with biological children in the further family home placement. That results in a discretion for the family home social workers. The study shows opportunities for improvement in making the biological children more involved in the family home process and that the biological children's participation is important for the work of family home social workers. Our results both confirm and contrast previous international and national research presented in the study.

Many family home placements that have required a lot of resources has made the rest of us stand back” : An interview study on biological children's experiences of family home placements – a retrospective perspective

Daddi, Massara, Jabbo, Dalida, Mörk, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
This qualitative interview study aims to investigate adults' biological children's experiences of being in a family home and how the family home placements have affected the biological children. The study examines whether the psychosocial development has affected the biological children, how the experiences of growing up as biological children in family homes have affected the adult’s current life situation and how the biological children experienced their participation in decisions regarding family home placements. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews where seven interviewees between the ages of 19–44 who had grown up as biological children in family homes answered questions about their experiences of various areas of their upbringing in family homes. Thematic analysis was the chosen analysis method in the study. The results of the interviews show that biological children who grow up in family homes are affected to varying degrees by the children who are placed in family homes with them. Some of the participants mention experiences of being overlooked, when the children placed in family homes was prioritized the guardian’s attention. The education was also negatively affected for some of the interviewees, where poor sleep was a decisive factor for the biological children, as sleep made them perform worse at school. De-prioritization of own school tasks due to the placed children's need for help at school also affected the biological children's education for the worse as they did not get enough time for their own tasks. The participants, on the other hand, mention how they have become more aware when individuals are having a hard time and find it easier to be there for others, this due to growing up in a family home. Most of the interviewee’s state that they have a positive attitude to family homes, but are, on the other hand, not willing to become one themselves as adults.

“Så länge människan funnits har även barnet gått på denna jord" : En litteraturstudie om familjehemsföräldrars biologiska barn / As long as humans have walked the earth, so have children

Grähs, Linnéa, Tidell, Anneli January 2019 (has links)
Most children that are placed in care are living in foster homes where many of the foster parents also have their own biological children. These biological children are found invisible by social services. The purpose of our study was to investigate how and to what extent previous research has drawn attention to foster carers own children. Based on a systematic, integrative literature study, 15 articles have been selected. We have analyzed these articles within the theoretical frame of childhood sociology. The results, states that the biological children have an important role in the foster care process and in the treatment process of the child being placed. The social services should prepare both parents and their children in the foster family for the challenges, feelings and thoughts that the biological children may possibly experience in the foster home care.
