The Effect of Objectified Images in the Media on the Development of Body Dissatisfaction and Depressive Symptoms in Filipino American Women

Dionisio, Nicole J. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Although Filipinos are becoming one of the largest Asian groups in the U.S there is limited research regarding mental health challenges Filipino women experience specifically regarding body satisfaction and self-image. The goal of this explorative qualitative study was to explore the relationship between objectified images of women in the media and the reported levels of body dissatisfaction in a sample of 8 American-born Filipino women and 8 Philippine-born Filipino women. Objectification theory was used to guide this research and levels of sociocultural influences, body satisfaction, and body consciousness were explored through a qualitative research design using statements from the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3, the Body-Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, and the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale. Participants were interviewed individually and the data were coded in order to determine patterns and themes. Results revealed that the Philippine-born participants relied more on images in the media than the American-born participants of the study in relation to what is attractive and fashionable. However as a whole, the data found that the majority of the participating women felt comfortable with their bodies and physical appearance. The results of this study could help create greater awareness of the issues that Filipino American women deal with in relation to their bodies and self-image through the development of initiatives to treat Filipino American women who may be suffering from mental health issues due to objectification as culturally Filipinos typically do not seek psychological intervention. If programs could be designed specifically for Filipinos targeting issues with body satisfaction, fewer Filipinos may be affected by poor body-image.

O-vikt-igt? : - Vikt- och Kroppsuppfattningens Påverkan på Social Ångest Över Tid / Un-Measurable? : - How Weight and Body Perception Influences Social Anxiety

Klaesson, Anna, Jirénius, Kristin January 2012 (has links)
Many people suffer from social anxiety. There is a relationship between weight and body perception connected to social anxiety but the link needs to be sorted out. The aim with our study was to clarify to what extent social anxiety is due to weight and body related concerns and to examine gender differences. The study was longitudinal and based on a survey performed at two occasions with one year interval (N=361). The result showed that perceived overweight, incorrectly perceived overweight, gender and body satisfaction predicts 7 % of the variety in social anxiety one year ahead. Girls who were dissatisfied with their bodies ran an increased risk reporting a higher level of social anxiety at the second occasion. Conclusively, as girls' and boys' relationships with their bodies differ, this findings should be considered in treatments and preventive programs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between several aspects related to dental esthetics and body satisfaction, self-evaluation concerning to esthetics, and oral-health related quality of life (OHRQL). This work had a cross-sectional design and its sample comprised subjects aged 13-20 years-old (n = 301; mean age = 16.12; SD = 1.75). The sample was of convenience type, comprising high-school students of a public school from Goiânia. Conditions related to dental esthetics were assessed through a clinical exam following the criteria established by World Health Organization. Self-perception variables were evaluated through the instruments Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS), short-form of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), as well as esthetic self-evaluation and will of change. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used to evaluate the association of variables. There was a low prevalence of dental alterations in the sample assessed. In general, there was a low impact of dental characteristics on OHRQL measures, what may influence on the decision-making process regarding to dental treatment needs.

Plastic surgery has become a common practice, especially among women worldwide. Brazil ranks second in the world ranking of plastic surgery, and the United States the first place. The body image is a major research topic related to the surgical procedure in conducting research to assess the motivation of these individuals to opt for this procedure. Thus, the present study aimed to assess satisfaction with the body in women undergoing plastic surgery. In addition, we sought to verify how they feel about the physical appearance and achievement motivation of Plastic Surgery. Therefore, this thesis is structured in two studies : first , it is a quantitative, comparative and correlational, with characteristic cross. In this , we employed three instruments: the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination ( BDDE), the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnnaire- 3 ( SATAQ - 3 ), the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) .In the second study, focused on a qualitative approach, a semistructured interview was conducted to analyze the speeches of volunteers about their bodies and Plastic Surgery. It was found that, regardless of the number of plastic surgeries performed, the levels of body satisfaction, media influence and concern with the shape or body parts showed no statistically significant differences for these women. When analyzing the content of the interviews, it was found that body dissatisfaction or operated region was the main reason for the procedure. Furthermore, it was found that these women are not fully satisfied with their physical appearance, being able to perform other procedures in future moments. Thus, it was concluded that the Plastic Surgery was not able to resolve the dissatisfaction body of volunteers. Moreover, the number of plastic surgery did not affect the level of body satisfaction.

Body Image is multifaceted and dynamic construct. It is the mental representation of body identity, in a permanent process of construction and reconstruction throughout an individual’s existence. When assessing Body Image, the researcher considers either perceptive aspects (reception and integration of sensorial information: visual, tactile and kinesthetic) and/or attitudinal aspects (beliefs, affections, behaviors and body dissatisfaction). Body dissatisfaction may be understood as an inconvenience felt by a person regarding what his/her body looks like or a disgust with his/her perception or judgment of his/her own body. Stunkard's Figure Rating Scale has been widely used to assess body satisfaction of those who can see. However, there are no valid or reliable alternatives in Brazil to assess the blind’s body dissatisfaction. The aim of this study was to adapt and develop Silhouette Scales to assess body dissatisfaction of the congenital blind in Brazil and to and to verify the psychometric qualities of the scale developed. This dissertation is presented as four articles: the first article, entitled “Adaptation of Bidimensional and Tridimensional Silhouette Scales (BSS and TSS) for the visually impaired”, regards the description of the elaboration process of two silhouette scales. The second one, entitled “Exploratory Analysis of Bidimensional and Tridimensional Silhouette Scales Adapted for the Visually Impaired“, approaches the significance of BSS and TSS. The third one, entitled “Bidimensional Silhouette Scale: an investigation on its applicability for congenital blind subjects”, analyzes the applicability of BSS. The forth one, entitled “Initial Evidence of Validation and Reliability of a Tridimensional Silhouette Scale for the Congenital Blind”, verifies the psychometric qualities of TSS. Stunkard’s Figure Rating Scale was used in this study as a parameter for the adaptation of BSS and the elaboration of TSS. BSS was developed in a graphic tactile bidimensional language. It was not found to be representative or suitable for the blind. The TSS was handcrafted in cast. It was shown to be representative and presented evidence of content and convergent validity as well as reliability. Hopefully, this study will contribute and foment further discussion on the assessment of Body Image for the visually impaired.

The Association Between Body Satisfaction, Posting Photos of Exercise and Training onInstagram and Gender Differences / Associationen mellan kroppstillfredsställelse, att publicera foton av motion och träning påInstagram och könsskillnader

Ekström, Fanny, Maier, Linnea January 2018 (has links)
The purpose with this study was to examine whether gender moderate the associationbetween body satisfaction and posting photos of exercise and training on Instagram. We usedan online survey to collect our participants that we posted in a local social network site forstudents in a swedish medium sized city (n = 239). The results of the moderated regressionanalysis showed that gender affect the association between body satisfaction and postingphotos of exercise and training on Instagram. As we hypothesized, men who rated high inbody satisfaction posted more photos of exercise and training on Instagram. Women’s postingof exercise and training on Instagram was not affected by their levels of body satisfaction.

Body image and self perception among African American women aged 18-30

West, Shelia F. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Apparel, Textiles, and Interior Design / Melody LeHew / The purpose of this study was to explore how African American women think and feel about their bodies. Specifically, this study examined how Black women define beauty by means of variables such as body shape, skin complexion, and hair texture; whether African American women ages 18-30 compared themselves to media images; and if so, did comparison to these media images impact African American women’s body satisfaction. In addition, this study explored if African American women felt pressure to adopt beauty standards attributed to the dominant culture, as well as the role of racial identity in forming beauty standards and social comparison behavior. Twelve African American women were interviewed and findings of this exploratory research illustrated that the Black community has different standards than the traditional beauty standards of the U.S. Even though interviewees articulated standards of beauty for women in the Black community, there was a lack of uniformity in how these women felt about their own attractiveness: some identified with the Black beauty standards, while others did not. In addition, opinions varied regarding Black women’s engagement in social comparison behavior and whether it was related to racial identity or body satisfaction. Limitations of study included: how Black women define social comparison behavior and racial identity, self-identification of participants, and the lack of Caucasian women included in this study. However, this research still provided rich data exploring Black women’s perceptions of beauty among other issues within the Black community. Future research is required to better understand influences shaping standards of beauty within this subculture of the United States and recommendations are provided in the last chapter.
