"To Rasshcheplennoe Iadro": From Lucretian Swerve to Sundered Core in Shalamov’s Atomnaia poema

Larson, Kirstin 18 August 2015 (has links)
Varlam Shalamov's Atomnaia poema addresses a primordial "wish to split" at the core of nature and within the human heart. This wish to split is informed by Shalamov's Gulag experience as well as his reflections on Auschwitz and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Whereas Lucretius interprets an atomic tendency to swerve as an indication of free will, Atomnaia poema posits an atomic proclivity to split, that is, to self-destruct and destroy others. Atomnaia poema weighs the role of science, "its verses and its faith," in this destruction. Neither a treatise nor didactic counsel, Atomnaia poema is a conversation between physics and poetry, human and world, held in a "third language" whose rhyme and rhythm carry an emotional impact rather than a cognitive load. Splitting its own elements as it grieves the splitting atom, Shalamov pursues "Ovid's epiphany," releasing what is "housed in a single verse."

Begehungen: Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial

Toepffer, Catharina 22 March 2024 (has links)

The effect of blast loading on a guy cable

Kuo, Tzu-Ti 15 June 2012 (has links)
The blast loading on a structure is a function of the incident blast wave characteristics, that is, overpressure and dynamic pressure. But the most damaging effect to the guy cable from a nuclear explosion would be the dynamic pressure caused by the high winds which follow the chock front. This dynamic pressure reaches its maximum value very rapidly, almost zero time after the passage of the shock front, and then decays exponentially as shown by equation (17). The work of this thesis has been the investigation of a guy cable under blast loading by correcting the tension during each small time interval. The results from this procedure are considerably smaller than those in the analytical work of Mr. D. A. Ball. From this point of view, we know that the tension of the cable in such a problem can not be considered as constant. / Master of Science

Is it possible to use legal defenses to exempt criminal responsibility for the crime of torture? / ¿Es posible el descargo de la imputación en el delito de tortura?

Bassino Balta, Ariana 25 September 2017 (has links)
Torture is proscribed in the majority of countries, and prohibited by numerous international instruments. However, torture is nowadays a practice that takes place in many countries, even though there exists a majority agreement in favor of absolute prohibition of this conduct. In the present article, the author analyzes the possibility of using legal defenses to exempt criminal responsibility for the crime of torture. In order to do this, the author examines historical, doctrinal and jurisprudential aspects, concluding than in certain situations it is possible to appeal to traditional legal defenses, particularly selfdefense.

The Bomb on the Bayou: Nuclear Fear and Public Indifference in New Orleans, 1945 - 1966

Schloesser, Gregory J. 14 May 2010 (has links)
At the height of nuclear tension, governments at all levels took steps to both educate and protect their citizens. Plans that included mass evacuations and shelters were put forth to protect the public and prepare for the seemingly inevitable war with the Soviet Union. These efforts faced tremendous obstacles, including a persistent sense of apathy amongst the public. Many authors insist that life under the persistent threat of a nuclear holocaust had a profound effect on the American psyche. The main thesis of this paper argues that while people were undoubtedly aware of the potential danger, those greatly affected and traumatized by it were the exception, particularly in the New Orleans area. Most people recognized the danger, but opted to not let it dominate their thoughts. They were far more concerned with their own interests, including family, career and home ownership.

On-Board Data Aquisition System : Conceptual Design of an Airdrop Tracking System

Eriksson, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is, on behalf of Saab AB, a pre-study of possible on-board solutions for position measuring during store separation tests aimed for the test and evaluation of JAS 39 Gripen. The purpose is to replace the present ground-based system in order to achieve more effective trials regarding time and economy. Three different concept development methodologies were investigated in order to find the most suitable one for this thesis. Those were merged into one adapted methodology containing the following phases; \textit{Planning}, \textit{Function Analysis}, \textit{Concept Generation} and \textit{Concept Evaluation}. The work progressed as the methodology states, and the highest amount of work was dedicated to the Planning phase. The requirements and desiderata for the system were produced with an agile process, resulting in the Construction Specification List that eventually became the basis for the Concept Generation phase. Knowledge about the technical theory needed to solve the problem was obtained in parallel with the Function Analysis and Concept Generation. The most adaptable techniques to measure position were found out to be with the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) or Inertial Navigation System (INS). After an extensive work with the Concept Generation in parallel with a continuously updated Construction Specification List, three concepts were developed. One concept is based on GPS, the second one on INS and the third one is a combination of GPS and INS. All three concepts shares the same telemetry system and casing, which fulfills the requirement of simple installation and possibility to install in different stores. In the final phase, Concept Evaluation, a comparison between the concepts was performed. Advantages and disadvantages was listed and the fulfillment of requirements was investigated. All three concepts were handed over to Saab in order to let them decide which concept(s) to further develop.

Representações de Hiroshima: a problemática da representação a partir de Gen Pés Descalços / Representations of Hiroshima: the issues of representation from Braefoot Gen

Gonçalves, Ana Cristina 25 November 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to reflect and understand how the representations about the horror are build, especially of Hiroshima, focusing on the violent event of the atomic bomb from the narrative of Nakazawa Keiji, Barefoot Gen, making links with other works that also represent catastrophe. To this end, a discussion was held about the possibility of writing and the horror of the catastrophe, the historical discourse and representations, the question of memory, history and writing, the dimensions of the building itself by its author, the political and ideological surroundings are part of the representations and, finally, the question of the possibility of the experience with the real.
