Factors influencing the choice of agriculture as a study discipline by undergraduates: a case study of a distance university's agriculture department

Dlamini, Nqobile Faith 05 1900 (has links)
Enrolments in agriculture programmes at universities in South Africa are low when compared to the other programmes. The purpose of this study was therefore to identify factors influencing the choice of agriculture as a study discipline by undergraduates in agriculture, in an open distance education university in South Africa. The study also investigated the impact of the three agriculture curricula taught at school level, as well as how well it prepares students for tertiary education. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. Open distance-learning agriculture students and agriculture educators participated in the survey. A structured online questionnaire and an open-ended questionnaire were employed. The study revealed that two major composite variables, namely family and friends, as well as job considerations, were highly significant in the students’ choice of agriculture at tertiary level. The impact of the agriculture curricula taught in the schools in preparation for tertiary education gave learners basic terminology and concepts involved in agriculture. The study also revealed challenges faced by agricultural science educators amongst which were the revealed challenges faced by agricultural science educators amongst which were the learners’ negative attitude towards the subject, inadequate or lack of infrastructure, and lack of proper guidance and counselling regarding choosing of subjects as factors that could hinder effective teaching and learning of agriculture in South Africa schools. Students studying through open distance learning indicated convenience, flexibility of studying at own pace, and ample time to spend with family and work, as factors that influenced their choice of studying through open distance learning. Recommendations on how to improve the agriculture curriculum in South African schools and attract more students’ enrolment in agriculture as a field of study at tertiary level upon completion of grade 12 are discussed in detail in the study / Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology / M. Bydrae van 'n program in denkvaardighede tot die wording van beroepstoetreders

Kasselman, Johanna Jacoba 06 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / It has been said that pupils are not adequately trained to think independently in the current educational system of South Africa. Therefore this research has been undertaken from a psycho-educational perspective to assess the contribution which a programme in cognitive empowerment can make towards the cognitive development and especially the general psychological development of teaching students in their final study year as potential career entrants. From this viewpoint recommendations can be made re the use of this programme in the broader educational context. In this study research has been done from a psycho-educational perspective concerning the cognitive, affective, normative and conative development of the late adolescent and the early career entrant and his/her personality in terms of this career. A group of final year teaching students, who were potential career entrants completed the Programme in Cognitive Empowerment. Before and after the presentation of this programme different media of evaluation were put into use. Based on this research, deductions have been made concerning the contribution which training in the programme has made to the development of the novice teachers. Finally, recommendations have been made concerning the implementing of such a programme. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde)

It's easier to become a criminal than to get a job : A study about juvenile delinquency in adolescence and horizons of opportunities

Mörner, Mika, Englaborn, Malin January 2017 (has links)
The study examined the prevalence of criminal behavior among adolescents in general and how social and personal resources can act as protection or risk factors in particular and also what differences exist between girls and boys. The survey was conducted on 1324 youths in ninth grade through the LoRDIA project. Data was analyzed by t-test, Spearman's correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the strongest predictor of young people's criminal behavior was peer delinquency. Social well-being turned out to be an important personal resource for the girls when it was about predicting criminal behavior and psychological well-being was important for the boys. While overall the results were in line with previous research, some divergent results were also discussed. The study was related to horizons of opportunities and to young people's perception of the educational and career choices they faced. Finally ways for companies and organizations to think and act on the results of the study were suggested.

Encouragement, Enticement, and/or Deterrent: A Case Study Exploring Female Experience in a Vocational Education (VET) Initiative in Northern England

Parris, Sandra A. January 2013 (has links)
This case study examined how a group of young girls at a secondary school in northern England made sense of their participation in a gender specific vocational education initiative designed to encourage female interest in skilled trade education and professions. The investigation consists of a qualitative case study that included ‘practical’ and historical components. On the practical side, the study looked at a gender specific initiative (girls only) aimed at Year 9 students (12-14 years old) at Garden Road Community and Technology School. The one-day sessions were held at local area colleges or vocational education and training (VET) training facilities and covered skilled trade fields that are traditionally male-dominated (e.g. automotive, construction and engineering). My methodology for the study consisted of two data sources, interviews and a review of public VET policy-related documents. The data was gathered using two methods, with individual and group interviews as the primary one, and public VET policy-related document analysis as the secondary one. In total, 13 current, 2 former and an additional 2 formerly registered (now graduates who decided to pursue non-traditional vocational education and professions) students at the school were interviewed. Beside former and current students, interviews were conducted with 2 instructors and 1 senior administrator at the school. The selection of government policy-related documents covered 2002 to 2011. The study is framed by a feminist informed genealogy that invokes Foucault’s (1990) notion of ‘biopower’ and Pillow’s (2003) notion of the ‘gendered body.’ Meanwhile, Ted Aoki’s (2003) concepts of curriculum-as-plan and curricula-as-lived are used to analyze and discuss the review of UK government policy-related documents and participant narratives. The theme-based presentation of student narratives centred on the girls’ understanding and experience of: the session process and content; gender; non-traditional VET as educational and occupational options; and the impact of the sessions on their educational and professional choices. The student narratives suggest several things that relate to their understanding of gender and non-traditional VET. First, the sessions proved to be both interesting and informative and students expressed an interest in taking part in more (and) varied gender-specific sessions. Second, traditional constructions of gender and gendered behavior are commonly used in job-related discourse as evidenced by the use of the terms ‘boys jobs’ and ‘girls jobs’ among the students. In addition, students had limited opportunities for exposure to non-traditional VET education and professions; and what knowledge they do have is generally dependent upon family knowledge and experience in the area. From a document review standpoint, the findings show that government commitment in terms of interest and financial backing for VET has been inconsistent. Resultantly, schools are left to identify and maintain a range of community-based partnerships that may not always see gender segregation in VET as a major concern. The significance of this study rests in the presentation of the girls’ ‘lived curriculum’ and ‘gendered’ experiences as points that can offer insight into what transpires within vocational education initiatives and settings. Furthermore, from a feminist perspective the research also highlights the continued need to work with schools on how gender is presented, discussed and understood among students. Failure to consider the gendered nature of discourse about education and professional options that takes place within school and class settings limits students’ perspectives about what is available and possible.

Arbeitsmarktsegregation

Herrmann, Jeremia 25 April 2017 (has links)

Arbeit

Gruhlich, Julia 07 May 2018 (has links)

Gender-Pay-Gap

Eicker, Jannis 02 May 2017 (has links)

Mellan Raderna : En kritisk analys av Skolverkets allmänna råd - arbete medstudie och yrkesvägledning / Between the lines : A crictical analysis of Skolverkets allmänna råd - arbete med studie ochyrkesvägledning

Boman, Josephine, Chiboub, Yemina January 2023 (has links)
What’s the problem represented to be”. / In between the lines, there it is. An invisible barrier that makes it difficult for some, easy forothers. That is the basis of our purpose in this paper. The invisible barrier – norms that areperceived as limiting for individuals. And the criticism leveled against norms and theirlimitations. We apply an analysis model whose purpose is to critically examine, understandthe problem picture behind the representation of the problems that are implicit in policydocuments. We have carried out a document study in which we have critically reviewed theSkolverkets allmänna råd - arbete med studie- och yrkesvägledning (2013) using Bacchi's(2009) theory and method "What's the problem represented to be". The purpose is to examinein what way Skolverkets allmänna råd - arbete med studie- och yrkesvägledning (2013)represents norms and norm criticism and which dilemmas arise in the representation. Byadopting a constructivist and norm-critical perspective, we try to understand therepresentation of norms and norm criticism and what happens in between. Between the lines.

Teachers' and learners' views on the role that entrepreneurship education plays in career choice decision-making of Business studies learners in Ekurhuleni Gauteng East District

Ajayi, Oluwakemi Bolanle 11 1900 (has links)
As unemployment is on the rise in developing economies as the result of a decline in the global economy during the past decade, increased attention is paid to entrepreneurship as generator of global economic growth. It has been noted that sustainable economic development cannot be achieved without entrepreneurship, nor can a country increase its gross domestic product and stock of wealth, or improve its citizens’ quality of life, if entrepreneurship is not increased. In order to increase the prospect of entrepreneurship in a country, it is necessary to introduce secondary school learners to entrepreneurship from the early grades, specifically the Grades 8 and 9 General Education and Training phase years. To stimulate learners’ interest in the subject, it is important to provide them with appropriate resources and textbooks, competent teachers and a well-structured curriculum. The knowledge and skills gained from studying entrepreneurship could influence learners’ future career choices. The unemployment rate in South Africa is high and 70 per cent of unemployed South Africans are youths. This percentage grows annually as learners exit the Further Education and Training (FET) phase. There is a dearth of literature on the attitudes of South African Business Studies learners in the FET phase towards entrepreneurship as a future career. Additionally, the role that entrepreneurship education plays in the potential career choices of Business Studies learners in the FET phase has not been explored extensively. Consequently this study attempted to explore the role of entrepreneurship education in influencing Business Studies learners in the FET phase in choosing entrepreneurship as a career. A qualitative case study research method was used to conduct the study. Three schools were identified and data were collected from them. The data-gathering methods employed were face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with Business Studies teachers; and focus group interviews with Business Studies learners in the three schools. The objective of the interviews was to determine the respondents’ views on the role that entrepreneurship education plays in learners’ career choices. The findings of the study indicate that teachers and learners strongly agree that entrepreneurship education plays a significant role in learners’ choice of entrepreneurship as a career. However, the respondents (both teachers and learners) highlighted challenges that could prevent learners from choosing entrepreneurship as a career. ʼn Kwalitatiewe gevallestudie is as navorsingsmetode gebruik. Data is by drie skole ingesamel. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Psychology of Education)
