In the tension between dream and realism : A study about assessment of careerNilsson, Benedikte, Pettersson, Nina January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how 18-19-year-olds assess career based on three parameters, authenticity, balance and challenge, and the protean career concept. To identify and understand the assessment of career quantitative and qualitative research methods are used. The sample are high school students in southern Sweden. The study contributes to career research in a Swedish context and among young adults who are about to enter the labor market, which has not been examined to a large extent. The concepts authenticity, balance and challenge in KCM were relevant to the sample, and authenticity was valued most highly. The study contributes with new approaches to 18-19-year-olds assessment of career in relation to KCM. The study shows that 18-19-year-olds’ definition of career is similar with the protean career concept.

In the last decades, new demands and ideologies about the relationship between man and work are transforming the meanings attributed to work and the ways of conceiving it. These transformations redefine the place work takes in society and bring about the need to reposition the concept of career and the development of theories that discuss the role of the worker in this scenario. It is possible to identify a change in the positioning attributed to the worker, from a passive posture to an agent position. Criticisms about the hegemony of emerging career models are directed more emblematically to the role assigned to the individual as an agent of his career - considering that the exercise of autonomy and mobility is possible or favored by his skills, education and qualifications. In sum, these models seem to disregard the fact that other factors such as social class, gender and ethnicity could limit this role of the individual as agent over his career and marginalize minorities such as women, the unemployed or the low-skilled workers. Among the issues that lie in the hiatus of hegemonic career discourse and the theoretical and empirical critiques of these models, attention is drawn to the relationship between an individual\'s career understanding and the role assigned to the worker with the socialization process, which forges the understanding of the world and of himself. The present dissertation aims to investigate the relationship of economic class and aspects of the social context with the career models of entrants in the job market. This study is empirical, approaching data of qualitative difference and frequency (quantitative) and the technical procedure is by survey. The data were obtained through an electronic survey based on Critério Brasil for economic classification, a questionnaire on cultural practices and the TST for the identification and analysis of career models. The population studied is non-probabilistic and intentional and consists of 150 young adults. The descriptive statistical analysis was performed using usual summary measures, such as mean and standard deviation (SD), median and minimum (min) and maximum (max) for quantitative variables and absolute and relative frequency for categorical variables. In the bivariate analysis, the Anderson-Darling test (Anderson and Darling, 1954) and parametric tests (t test, ANOVA and Pearson\'s correlation) and non-parametric tests were used (Mann-Witney, Levene, Kruskal-Wallis, Tukey non-parametric And Spearman\'s correlation). To analyze the career score versus the socioeconomic variables together a multiple linear regression model was used. The software used for analysis was R 3.1.2. And the level of significance adopted in the analyzes was 0.05. The results obtained did not present a significant correlation for economic class and career models, despite tending to the traditional models in classes B and C. Also, no correlation was identified for most of the quantitative and qualitative variables, except for the variables: civil status - married, black and favorite program soap opera that proved statistically significant for the emerging career model and the variable, the main reason for accessing the Internet - send emails, meaningful to the traditional model. Identifying the need for deepening and the vast space for research demonstrated here, it is expected that this study will serve as an invitation to researchers to develop new empirical studies on socialization and career, in general, and career and its impacts on people management in the organizations

Work-Life Balance of Women Employed Within State GovernmentMartinez, Luisa Cunanan 01 January 2018 (has links)
Women in the U.S. workforce have been a focus of scholars since the onset of the 21st century, when work-life balance skewed in favor of the term work-life integration because professional working mothers found that balance was an unachievable ideal in the fast pace of the contemporary world. Accordingly, this research study examined the work-life challenges and career choices of women working in the public sector through the framework of the Kaleidoscope Career Model (KCM). While research has been conducted on women in corporate America, there have been limited studies exploring the work-life challenges and career decisions of women working in government. The study design was phenomenological with convenience sampling of women working for state government agencies. Data were collected through a structured interview and demographic questionnaire. Data from the 7 participants were analyzed using the KCM theory and considering Mainiero and Sullivan's A-authenticity, B-balance, C-challenge parameters. Overall, findings indicated that women working in state government chose and remained in their jobs because of stability, security, and benefits. These women did not opt-out, as is common for corporate workers, because they received the flexibility and benefits required to integrate work-life balance. Corporate human resources might explore needs of their own workers using the KCM framework. Policies to retain workers might include more flexibility in scheduling and benefits for workers. This work extends applicability of the KCM to a population of which it has not been used.

Resultatet klassificerades in i fyra kategorier; studentidrottares upplevda krav, barriärer, resurser och copingstrategier. / The purpose of the study was to investigate student athlete's experiences of studying at aNational Sport University in Sweden. Specifically, student athletes who had no connection toan elite environment were investigated, that is, student athletes who are elite athletes butwhose sports associations did not have a collaboration agreement with the university. Thestudy included 12 interviewees, divided into six women and six men aged 19–30 (M = 22.83,S = 2.88). The study used a semi-structured interview guide based on The Holistic AthleticCareer Model (Wylleman, 2019) and The Athletic Career Transition Model (Stambulova,2003). The result was classified into four main categories; student athlete's perceiveddemands, barriers, resources and coping strategies. The result showed that the biggestdemand that the participants experienced was that they had to support themselves financiallyin terms of student loans or working in parallel with the combination, this could cause a greatdeal of stress for the participants. The main barrier the participants experienced was a lack ofsupport from the university and that they felt that the studies and the sport were suffering asthey could not perform equally successfully in both, which could cause a feeling ofinadequacy. Furthermore, the participants felt that social support from coaches, family andfriends was the primary resource for facilitating the combination. Planning was the studentathletes' most used coping strategy to handle the demands of a dual career.

Career Challenges and Coping Strategies of Swedish Elite Show Jumpers : A mixed-methods study / Svenska elithoppryttares karriärutmaningar och coping strategier : En studie med mixad metodReveny, Stephanie, Stafverfeldt, Elvira January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine perceived challenges and coping strategies of Swedish elite show jumpers from the holistic perspective. A mixed-methodology was used with a dominant qualitative design and a supportive quantitative design. Semi-structured interviews based on the holistic athletic career model and two surveys developed from the qualitative results were used to collect the data. The participants of the study were 5 Swedish elite show jumpers between the age of 24-29 (M=26.4, SD=2.06). The qualitative findings resulted in two category profiles of perceived challenges and use of coping strategies. The quantitative findings resulted in two individual profile for each participant. The findings identified five higher order themes of perceived challenges (psychological, financial, psycho-social, athletic and vocational) and three higher order themes of coping strategies (social support, problemfocused coping and emotion-focused coping). The individual profiles showed both similar patterns and individual nuances between the participants. Major challenges for the equestrians were financial, injuries and dealing with identity foreclosure. This study represents an effort to highlight the challenges met and coping strategies used by equestrians on elite level, to prevent ineffective coping and negative consequences such as a premature dropout.

The aim of this study is to describe the experience of social support among female elite athletes who combine handball with higher education, with the underlying purpose to describe these persons’ experience of the functions of the support. These functions are materialistic, informative and emotional. There are ten women in the ages 22 to 24 (M=23.1, S=0,83) participating in the study. The study uses a semi-structured interview, based on two articles that studied social support (Knight et al., 2018; Schaefer et al., 1981). The result was sorted in three categories: emotional support, materialistic support and informative support. The result showed that women experienced emotional support, especially affinity, in the dual career (DC). Materialistic support was experienced in terms of support thru adjustment from coach and university. However, materialistic support was also identified lacking. Lastly, informative support, in shape of information and guidance in dual career, was experienced missing.

Aktad och Föraktad : En kvalitativ studie av kända svenska mäns självbiografier om missbruk / Fame and Shame : A qualitative study on addiction-related autobiographies by Swedish male celebretiesWisaeus, Anna, Lindgren, Maria January 2023 (has links)
Addiction and drug dependency have become widespread social problems in all layers of society. While there is always a stigma around drug abuse, the number of public figures willing to share their experiences on the issue has increased. The purpose of the study was to analyse the autobiographies of seven famous Swedish men, writing about their addiction, using qualitative thematic text analysis. We have explored how we can gain a greater understanding of drug use and its causes, and how it is portrayed in autobiographies. The analysis contains selected explanatory models (comorbidity, self-medication, career model, shame and turning point) that social workers use when describing how and why a person is using drugs. Results have been coded and thematized in order to answer the questions at hand. The results show that stories on recovery from drug use are often quite similar, albeit with individual differences. The results give an insight into addiction which can help understanding and helping people affected by addiction.
