Depressed mood in a theological perspectiveWay, Marion C. January 1998 (has links)
The symptoms of depression and those of accidie as described by the Desert Fathers overlap, in that feelings of despair, guilt, poor estimates of self-worth, lack of energy and self-absorption predominate. Tillich adds to these symptoms a sense of meaninglessness and purposelessness. A new model of depressed mood is proposed which incorporates a variety of different aetiological factors, integrating those from the body and the mind which are found in clinical practice, with others which have a spiritual origin. The need for reconciliation with God, the world and the self means that discernment of spiritual problems can be fundamental in finding an answer to disturbed mood. The psychological aspects of guilt and self-hatred and lethargy are explored through the work of Karen Homey, mainly in a discussion of the compulsions caused by an inflated ego-ideal. The work of Carl Jung emphasises the integration of the shadow, stressing the importance of reconciling polarities in the psyche so as to generate a creative tension which can replenish spiritual and mental energy. Many theologians, including Tillich, also emphasise that opposites must come together, so that God can be found at the centre of all things. Hans Urs von Balthasar is " outstanding because of his understanding of Christ's kenosis in balance with His plerosis These polarities point to the way in which Christ, through His Passion and Resurrection redeems us from godforsakermess, and also suggest a helpful way of understanding the Trinity as Love. Nicholas de Cusa and Ignatius of Loyola, from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, have a common strand of finding God in the midst of opposite and fragmenting influences. Miguel de Unamuno at the beginning of this century adds a dimension of God's involvement in tragedy and suffering, and Charles Williams stresses our co-inherence vyith God, and the need for forgiveness in bearing each other’s burdens. The convergence of psychological and theological insights concerning polarities is applied to a recovery model for depressed mood through cognitive therapy, art, and prayer - methods which search, respectively, for truth, beauty and goodness. The process of healing is part of redemption, in that the 'Fruits of the Spirit' are the antithesis of some of the symptoms of depression, such as guilt, anger, self-absorption and fear. We may feel helpless and vulnerable because of negative feelings, but in His total self-giving, Christ suffered the helplessness and agony of the Passion in order to transform our disorders and bring us to His Kingdom of service and praise.

A Psychoanalytic Study of Occupational Stress and Burnout among Public Relations PractitionersMartinez, Tiffany Adriana 08 1900 (has links)
Unfavorable opinions and images of the public relations industry have persisted for decades, and the industry still struggles to deal with them. Additionally, it is a demanding profession that is expected to grow faster than average but struggles to retain talent. Public relations research has also predominantly focused on how nonpractitioners perceive public relations. The present study psychoanalytically analyzed two movies with cinematic representations of public relations practitioners and 20 interviews with public relations practitioners to examine how practitioners' self-perceptions of public relations unconsciously influence their practice and expectations, as well as their stress and burnout. More specifically, stress and burnout dynamics were explored among younger and older practitioners and gender.

Eu exalto a alegria...
The quest for the sense of life and the frustration derived from the fact that humanity is mortal, that means inferior to gods, constitute two of the most important elements of the human psyche. As a consequence, life is often considered as being tasteless and without any sense or purpose. The book of Ecclesiastes, in its time, and the profound psychology from the 20th century are two forms of dealing with these questions and to look for solutions. New ways of enjoying life and attaining wisdom that go beyond the terrenal world emphasize the spiritual, affective and emotional life beyond the narrow limits of power deriving from material goods only. Each in his own way, both the author of the book of the Ecclesiastes and Carl G. Jung propose principles such as dignity, solidarity, and integralization of the human being in sense of live in plenitude all the lifes possibilities. This research shows an alternative to read the book of Ecclesiastes from the view of the profound psychology, making it accessible to all people who look for new ways to experience their spirituality in everydays life.

This dissertation seeks to elucidate the investigation of the relationship between analytical psychology, founder Carl Gustav Jung, and Buddhism, in its slope known as Mahāyāna Buddhism. For this, three key aspects will be analyzed in detail. The first aspect concerns Jung's motivation for dialogue with Eastern religions in general, based on a careful diagnosis of the spiritual crisis of the West and its Christian tradition. The second aspect refers to the direct dialogue established with Buddhist thought in its various aspects, especially Mahāyāna Buddhism, in the context of orientalism prevalent in Europe of its time. And the third and final aspect refers to the similarities and differences between the processes of transformation proposed on the one hand by analytic psychology through the notion of individuation and, on the other hand, Mahāyāna Buddhism through the so-called Bodhisattva-bodhisattvamārga path . Thus, on the basis of the studies on analytical psychology and Māhāyana Buddhism, one identifies that, on the one hand, the latter served some form of support for the former, and on the other, both systems present similar proposals in the Which relates to the goals of a spiritual transformation. With this proposed study we will point out that they are somehow convergent and that they are enriched by mutual dialogue.

Shadow Government: unconscious motivations in our critiques to Paternalism from Carl Jung / Estado sombra: lo inconsciente en las críticas al Estado paternalista desde Carl JungMastro Puccio, Fernando del 10 April 2018 (has links)
With the present paper we seek to use Carl Jung´s theoretical approach to the “Projection of the Shadow” as a framework to reveal posible unconscious motivations in our critiques to the Government´s paternalistic attitudes and regulations. Our proposal is that certain aspects of ourselves as individuals and society, which we do not like and do not accept (our Shadow), are seen exclusively as attributable to the Government. We argue that this unconscious dynamic limits our understanding of ourselves and prevents us to comprehend the essence of paternalism, both in our relation with the Government and in our daily life. We do not intend to discuss the logical or empirical validity of the arguments against this form of Government but to point out that those arguments might be influence by unconscious motivations.

The Metaphysics of the Collective UnconsciousJablon, Oscar B 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis shows how the metaphysical features of the Jungian collective unconscious can be demystified by viewing the collective unconscious through the lens of functionalism. The features of the collective unconscious that will be investigated in this thesis are the possibility of the collective unconscious being present in every person, the archetypes as being the formal feature of some of our modes of perception, psychic energy, and synchronicity. By admitting functionalism, Jung doesn't need to posit synchronicity to explain how it is possible for the archetypes to interact with the body. This is because functionalism can view mental states as being material without needing another connecting principle, i.e., synchronicity, which goes beyond scientific explanation. If mental states are material and the body is a material thing, there is no need for Jung to explain how the archetypes interact with the body through synchronicity. In viewing the collective unconscious as a functional system, synchronicity can be dismissed while still leaving the rest of Jung's psychological theory of the mind in place.

Joseph Campbell's Functions of Myth in Science Fiction: A Modern Mythology and the Historical and Ahistorical Duality of TimeSmith, Laurel Ann 07 February 2014 (has links)
This document explores the relationships between science fiction and mythology, utilizing the theories of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung in particular. Conclusions are then drawn that argue that science fiction performs the same functions as mythology in the modern world. The author provides examples of these functions being performed in science fiction by analyzing two novels: The Forest of Hands and Teeth, and Stranger in a Strange Land. Finally, the document explores the narratives' uses of time in historical and ahistorical modes as a vehicle for its functions, and argues that the various uses of time are key to science fiction acting as modern mythology. / Master of Arts
