Improved stoichiometric synthesis of CCC-NHC pincer Rh complexes and catalytic activity towards dehydrogenative silylation and hydrosilylation of alkenes

Amoateng, Enock 08 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have attracted growing interest not only as successful ancillary ligands in a wide variety of transition-metal-catalyzed reactions but have also shown to offer photophysical and electrochemical properties. The metalation/transmetalation strategy using [Zr(NMe2)4] as initial metalating reagent offers an efficient approach to the preparation of CCC-NHC pincer complexes of the late transition metals such as Rh and Ir. In the process of investigating an intermediate and the mechanism of the metalation/transmetalation to Rh sequence, a mixed valent bimetallic CCC-NHC pincer Rh complex with two chloro ligands bridged between a [(CCC-NHC)Rh(III)] and a [Rh(I)(COD)] fragment was isolated and fully characterized for the first time. The investigation of the Rh(III)/Rh(I) bimetallic intermediate in the CCC-NHC pincer metalation/transmetalation methodology led to an improved stoichiometric synthesis of series of CCC-NHC pincer Rh complexes. The CCC-NHC pincer Rh complexes were characterized with 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, ESI-TOF MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The catalytic activity of the series of CCC-NHC pincer Rh complexes were evaluated. All the CCC-NHC pincer Rh precatalysts were found to promote the dehydrogenative silylation of vinylarenes with Et3SiH to form the corresponding (E)-vinylsilanes as the major silylation product under solvent-free conditions. The catalytic system displays wide substrate scope. Electron rich and electron deficient vinylarenes were well tolerated affording the corresponding vinyl silanes in good yields (65-86%). Mechanistic investigations indicated that Rh(III) center was responsible for the catalytic performance. The CCC-NHC pincer ligand architecture plays a role in achieving good regio- and stereoselectivities. Also, the complexes were evaluated as precatalysts towards hydrosilylation of aryl- and alkyl alkenes. The precatalysts, [(BuCiCiCBu)RhCl(µ-Cl)2Rh(COD)] and [(BuCiCiCBu)RhCl(µ-Cl)]2, were found to promote highly regioselective anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation of aryl- and alkyl alkenes with excellent selectivity (>99%) using Et3SiH or PhMe2SiH as silane source and acetonitrile as solvent. Straight chain alkyl alkenes were tolerated without undergoing isomerization as it is the case with most known hydrosilylation catalyst systems. We extended the improved stoichiometric metalation/transmetalation methodology towards the synthesis of 1,3-di(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)benzene-based pincer Rh complexes. A series of 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene)bis(4-hexyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium) salts were synthesized. Metalation/transmetalation of 1,1'-(1,3-phenylene)bis(4-hexyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium) diiodide salt was successfully demonstrated to synthesize novel triazole-based CCC-NHC pincer Rh complexes.

Cryogenic Carbon Capture using a Desublimating Spray Tower

Nielson, Bradley J. 05 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Global warming is becoming ever increasing concern in our society. As such the likelihood of a carbon tax in the US is becoming increasingly likely. A carbon tax will be expensive enough that coal-based power plants will either have to install carbon capture technology or close. The two front runner technologies for carbon capture are amine scrubbing, and oxyfuel combustion. The downside is that both of these technologies increase power generation cost in a new plant by about 80% and have up to a 30% parasitic load, which reduces the cycle efficiency, that is, the power production per unit fuel consumed, by the same 30%. Retrofitting existing plants by either of these technologies is even more expensive and inefficient since it requires major modifications or replacement of the existing plant in addition to the new capture technology. Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) has developed a carbon capture technology named cryogenic carbon capture (CCC). CCC is a process by which the flue gas cools to the point that CO2 desublimates. This process is more efficient, cheaper, and has about half of the parasitic load of other technologies, approaching the theoretical minimum in CO2 separation within heat exchanger and compressor efficiencies. This thesis conceptually describes, experimentally characterizes, and theoretically models one desublimating heat exchanger as an integral part of the CCC process. A spray tower conceptually developed by SES and theoretically and experimentally explored in previous work at lab scale is developed at bench scale in this work with accompanying major modifications to the theoretical model. It sprays a cold contact liquid to cool warm gas (relative to the contact liquid) that travels up the tower. Nominal operating temperatures are around -120 to -130 °C for 90% and 99% capture, respectively. Once the flue gas cools enough, CO2 desublimates on the liquid droplet surfaces and forms a slurry with the contact liquid. This spray tower can achieve arbitrarily high CO2 capture efficiency, depending on the temperature of the exiting gas and other operational variables. The experimental data outlined here varied these operational parameters over broad ranges to achieve capture efficiencies of 55% to greater than 95%, providing a robust data set for model comparison. The operational parameters explored include liquid temperature, liquid flow rate, gas flow rate, and droplet size. These data validated a transport and design model that predicts capture for future scale-up and design of the project. The data and model indicate expected behaviors with most of these variables and a dependence on internal droplet temperature profiles that may be higher than expected. This project significantly advanced the experimental database and the model capabilities that describe the spray tower.

Lessard-Bérubé, Stéphanie 11 1900 (has links)
In the urban context of Burkina Faso, music and songs with a message for social education have become an intersection for traditionnal social practice, news cultural economies and participative development programs. This practice responds to specific local and international issues. As a common resource of social and artistic communication, music represents a strategic resource for musicians and local associations. For the former, we can discuss the role of the musician in contemporary society, between impoverisation and globalization. For the latter, music and songs with a message for social education are an innovative approach of Information, Éducation et Communication pour la santé (IEC/santé) and Communication pour le Changement de Comportement (CCC). In this research, we present the diverse levels of collaboration between musicians artist and local associations working in the healthcare sector in Burkina Faso. The ethnography presents the particular sphere of each group and analyzes the social negociations that results from their encounter. The research question proposed here falls between cultural studies and the study of social change. Hence, the chain of creation-production-diffusion commoditization allows us to study the history of complex concepts such as culture and developpement in a particular setting in Frenchspeaking West Africa.

Spectrum resource assignment in cognitive radio sensor networks for smart grids / Allocation des ressources spectrales dans les réseaux de capteurs à radio cognitive pour les smart grids

Aroua, Sabrine 11 July 2018 (has links)
With the advances in wireless communication technologies, cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSNs) stand as an efficient spectrum solution in the development of intelligent electrical power networks, the smart grids. The cognitive radio (CR) technology provides the sensors with the ability to use the temporally available licensed spectrum in order to escape the unlicensed spectrum resource scarcity problem. In this context, several challenging communication issues face the CRSN deployment for smart grids such as the coexistence of different electrical applications and the heterogeneous opportunities to access available licensed channels between smart grid sensors. The work conducted in this thesis focuses on spectrum resource allocations for CRSNs in smart grids. We concentrate our efforts on the development of new spectrum resource sharing paradigms for CRSNs in smart grids. The developed solutions focus on distributed and balanced spectrum sharing among smart grid sensors and on eventual CRSN deployment scenarios in smart grid areas. All along the thesis, channels are assigned without relying on a predefined common control channel (CCC) to exchange control messages before each spectrum access trial. All along the thesis, channels are assigned without relying on a predefined common control channel (CCC) to exchange control messages before each spectrum access trial. Performance evaluation of the different proposed channel assignment solutions shows their ability to achieve a distributed and fair opportunistic spectrum assignment in a way to consider different smart grid system characteristics.

Rörelsekapitalets påverkan på svenska nyintroducerade företags finansiella prestation och värdeutveckling i tider av ekonomisk tillväxt / The effect of working capital management on performance and firm value for Swedish IPO companies during an economic boom

Andersson, Daniel, Wittenby, Anton January 2018 (has links)
Introduction Working capital is the life blood of a company. Rörelsekapitalhantering för svenska små och medelstora företag

Broman, Fredrik, Nordin, Johan January 2018 (has links)
Working capital management (WCM) is an important part of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to generate new capital and streamline operations. The companies that consist in Sweden is to the majority SMEs, which makes it important to investigate how companies handle their capital. The purpose of the study was to analyse WCM thru CCC and WCR with company-specific, industry-specific and macro-specific factors. This was tested in an OLS model with this studies dependent variables CCC and WCR against the independent variables profitability, growth opportunities, size, cash flow and industry affiliation. The study also examined how a financial crisis affects working capital with a t2 test. This study included 4240 companies in the period 2008 to 2015, where 2008 to 2009 is described as a crisis period. The result for the study shows a positive significant correlation between CCC and cash flow, as well as a negatively significant correlation with profitability, size and industry affiliation. Furthermore, the study shows a positive significant correlation between WCR and profitability, and the size of the growth potential, cash flow and industry affiliationare negatively significant in relation to the WCR. The companies have a longer CCC and a higher WCR during crisis periods.
