Reasoning about Benefits and Costs of Interaction with Users in Real-time Decision Making Environments with Application to Healthcare Scenarios

Jung, Hyunggu 23 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the problem of having an intelligent agent reasoning about interaction with users in real-time decision making environments. Our work is motivated by the models of Fleming and Cheng, which reason about interaction sensitive to both expected quality of decision (following interaction) and cost of bothering users. In particular, we are interested in dynamic, time critical scenarios. This leads first of all to a novel process known as strategy regeneration, whereby the parameter values representing the users and the task at hand are refreshed periodically, in order to make effective decisions about which users to interact with, for the best decision making. We also introduce two new parameters that are modeled: each user's lack of expertise (with the task at hand) and the level of criticality of each task. These factors are then integrated into the process of reasoning about interaction to choose the best overall strategy, deciding which users to ask to resolve the current task. We illustrate the value of our framework for the application of decision making in hospital emergency room scenarios and offer validation of the approach, both through examples and from simulations. To sum up, we provide a framework for reasoning about interaction with users through user modeling for dynamic environments. In addition, we present some insights into how to improve the process of hospital emergency room decision making.

Motloung, Phindiwe Aletta January 2008 (has links)
This study investigates educators' experiences in choosing material for learners in the inclusive classroom setting as clearly stated in chapter one. Chapter two explored the literature on the learning and teaching support materials and the processes involved. The definition of learning and teaching support materials was explored. The kinds, importance and role of learning and teaching support, were discussed and the role is seen as a vehicle which enhances the awareness for expression and opportunities to capture evidence of learners knowledge. Guidelines to consider in the process of selecting learning and teaching support materials and the utilization thereof, as well as the funding of learning and teaching support materials received attention. This chapter further explored the inclusive classroom where inclusion is defined; the nature of inclusive classroom was discussed. The benefits and the criticism of inclusive classroom settings were also explored. In chapter three, the empirical research design used in the study is discussed. Focus group interviews in qualitative study were used to explore educators' experiences in choosing learning and teaching support material in inclusive classroom settings. Chapter four highlighted the research methods used to investigate the problems of this study. The application of the focus interview was explained in detail because the focus group was used for the collection of data which was analysed and interpreted. The data revealed that educators experience a number of difficulties in choosing learning and teaching support materials for learners in inclusive classroom settings. The last chapter concludes the study with recommendations on the way to assist educators in choosing materials for learners in the inclusive classroom setting. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2008.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luciana Nogueira de Souza.pdf: 1181252 bytes, checksum: 7fccb0004ed918df72fea0e75e082939 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-11-06 / The study commences with the finding - based on the School Census (Censo Escolar Inep/MEC) data in recent years – that there is an ever-increasing rate of enrolment in and expansion of the numbers of private primary and private secondary schools in Brazil, and this trend is equally applicable to the state of São Paulo and the city of Guarulhos. However, there are few studies which focus on the choosing of education within the private education sector in our country, especially with regards to the less wealthy population. It is within this context that the present study aims to understand the strategies which families adopt when choosing a private school in the city of Guarulhos. To this end, nine families, which had enrolled their children in the first year of secondary school in 2017, were selected, since the latter education level had the largest number of enrolments. The methodology followed was the use of semi-structured interviews with the families, which were later analysed and categorised from the standpoint of analysis of the discussion arising out of the interviews. The study showed that the procedure used in selecting an education institution is influenced by the perception of what constitutes a good school, as formed by the various life and social experiences undergone by the families. It was shown that the strategies used by the family group in the selection of a school are limited, since they are adopted as a means of avoiding public schools and are restricted by the family's financial situation.
